Customer Reviews:
Excellent in every way.......2005-11-03
This is a serious guidebook for travellers who take their touring and sightseeing seriously. It covers the Four Corners region of the southwest (UT, CO, NM, AZ) and is divided into four geographic sections. It includes information on the history of each section (in detail), points of interest (fully described), and where to stay/eat (fully annotated). Chapters focus on the canyon country of Utah, the Indian country of Arizona, the Rocky Mountains, and the Rio Grande country. There are also a full index and a substantial bibliography. It's everything you could ask for in a guidebook and should be taken along by anyone travelling in this region. Highly recommended.
A Travelers Bible!.......2000-08-28
My wife and I plannned a trip to the Four Corners area and at the last moment received Journey to the High Southwest as a gift. We read it during the plane ride and made immediate adjustments to our travel schedule. The results were so good that we continued, chapter by chapter, to use Mr. Casey's guidance and suggestions. For those uninitiated in the region, or even experienced Four Corners visitors, we strongly suggest this guide. It will provide very accurate and useful information to anyone who uses it. Read the entire book - before you go!
Comprehensive overview of the four corners region.......1999-12-11
This is a great travel book, providing quick and easy to reference to the lay-of-the land in the four-corners region in the style of a virtual tour of the area. The author takes you along his journey, showing you what to see and do, how to get there, where to eat, sleep, shop--or simply soak up the sublime beauty.
Travel with an history background.......1999-06-22
This book give to the reader and future traveller an unique vision of the history of this country. the writer help us to understand the people that inhabited this country and the geological features of this land of enchantment. For an european like me is the first and essential step to the visit of a country.

Leave home without it.......2004-04-24
I just took a week-long trip to New Mexico and gave up using this book after the first day. I found my free AAA New Mexico Tourbook far more complete and informative.
This was the best guidebook I found for New mexico.......2000-06-26
I browsed many guidebooks in bookstores and read several from the library before settling on this book to take with me to the Southwest.
The writer writes well and she is not afraid to offer candid opinions of hotels and tourist sites. She's a New Mexico native and shares her passion for the state with the reader.
** I especially liked the lists of top attractions by type in the front of the book: Best of Natural New Mexico, Best Scenic and Historic Drives, Best Outdoor Activities, Best Family Experiences, Best Historic Hotels, etc. (there are 12 of these lists).
These lists helped my companion (my 13 year old son) and I get our hands around the diversity of this state and plan just what we most wanted to do during our one week in the Southwest.
Once we narrowed down what we wanted to do, the book was arranged by region, listing all the other things we could do while in that area.
Other good companion books for this trip were Tony Hillerman's novels set in Navajo country and the book, Roadside Geology of New Mexico.
The Frommers book for Arizona has the same organization and is very good, but not quite as good as this book.

Customer Reviews:
Great Information, horrible support............2004-07-21
I've been reading (devouring is more like it) this book for the last 3 days. I tell you, Richard Harris did a great job of not only pointing out unique finds but writing about them in such a way that I want to see them all !! Lots of quaint B&B and unique hotels and restaurants are listed with phone numbers. Lots of the park listings have warnings if they might be closed for "tribal member only" events with a phone number to call to double-check. This part of the book is worth the read alone.
I gave this review 4 stars and would almost drop it to 3 stars because the maps are useless - Only the MAJOR highways and almost NONE of the things written about in the book show up on any of the enclosed maps. I'm sorry but that is unforgivable - I have been sitting with a separate map that I reference while reading this book so I can locate exactly where they are talking about.
Also, the entire book has no photographs, only hand drawn images - which are nice, but because the outside cover is so beautiful, it's a shame that the "support" of this book is so lackluster when compared to the excellent, eloquent writings of Mr. Harris. It's his writing that saved this from the dreaded average 3 star rating.

Thank you Lesley King!!!.......2006-11-11
I just returned from five days in Santa Fe, Taos & Albuquerque. Whenever and wherever I travel I always look for the local experience. For this, this guide is fantastic!! Lesley is a real local. Her descriptions are passionate, personal and accurate. Lesley - please move to another state and write another book!! I cannot thank you more!!
Frommer's Santa Fe, Taos & Albuquerque.......2006-02-17
I think this book will be more helpful after I have moved to New Mexico, using it as a guidebook. I also have the Fodar's guide to New Mexico and I found it much more interesting. It's something you can actually pick up and read for entertainment as well as information and it has wonderful color photographs. The Frommer's book is mostly information and lacks interest.
Excellent Guide to Northern NM.......2005-06-08
Just returned from Taos and Santa Fe and I was surprised about the accuracy of King's reviews. You can plan an excellent week using this book alone (and perhaps a more detailed hiking book). Even locals we spoke with were impressed that we knew of some of the out-of-the-way places. One note: the prices listed for many of the recommended restaurants have gone up (probably due to their newfound popularity from this book).
spot on.......2001-09-24
we just completed a two-week New Mexico vacation, and found that time after time, hotel after hotel, restaurant after restaurant, attraction after attraction, this guide was absolutely spot on. We brought another guide ("The Insider's Guide to Santa Fe") and wound up relying on Frommer's exclusively.
We were most impressed by the recommendations for small out-of-the-way places we _never_ would have gone to otherwise, "Chef du Jour" in Albu. being a perfect example.
Our only quibble is that the author praises the food a little over-much. Desserts she describes as the "best you'll ever eat" we would describe as "good", for example, but then again we're from the bay area and i guess we're pretty spoiled.
Informative and not afraid to criticize.......2000-07-18
We used this guide to plan a couple of trips to Santa Fe and in and around Taos, and were very happy with the results. The book starts with a general introduction to northern New Mexico, covering history, art, architecture and so on. Then there's a chapter on general visitor information for the region, and a section for foreign visitors. The remaining chapters are:
Getting to Know Santa Fe; Where to Stay in Santa Fe; Where to Dine in Santa Fe; What to See & Do in Santa Fe; Santa Fe Shopping; Santa Fe After Dark; Excursions from Santa Fe; Getting to Know Taos; Where to Stay in Taos; Where to Dine in Taos; What to See & Do in Taos; Albuquerque
The organization is good, with the hotels, for example, clearly broken out by price range ("Very Expensive", "Expensive", "Moderate" and "Inexpensive"). But the real value of the book is the author's candid evaluations. We've been burned in the past by guide books that gave every establishment a glowing review, so it was pleasant to use this book to find lunch in Taos one day last month. Here's some of what we found:
Ogelvie's Bar and Grill: "The food here is not flavorful, and the atmosphere is dated"
Eske's Brew Pub: "The crowd is local, a few people sitting at the bar . . . . At times it can be a rowdy place, but mostly it's just fun, lots of ski patrollers and mountain guides . . . ."
Outback in Taos: "My kayaking buddies always go here after a day on the river. That will give you an idea of the level of informality (very), as well as the quality of the food and beer (great) and the size of the portions (large)."
It's clear that the author really loves the area, and knows it inside out; we went to eight or ten places (hotels and restaurants) that she recommends, and didn't regret a single one.

Book Description
In Stephen Metzger's updated and revised Moon Handbooks New Mexico, travelers are given all the details they need to experience the culture and beauty of America's fifth largest state. From an insider's tour of Santa Fe artisan shops to skiing the Sangre de Christos to whitewater rafting the Rio Grande, Metzger provides information on all that New Mexico has to offer. Travelers can experience a range of recreational opportunities -- hiking, biking, camping, golf, boating, skiing, and more -- in the state's many parks and wilderness areas. Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos, and Las Cruces are full of cultural enjoyment, excellent food, a wide range of accommodations and shopping opportunities, and works of art -- particularly painting, pottery, textiles and jewelry. The three major players in the development of New Mexico -- Native Americans, the Spanish, and Mexicans -- continue to strongly influence the state, offering a rich tableau of historical sites and a look into unique cultures and traditions that are a thousand years old. Insightful, distinctive, and informative, Moon Handbooks New Mexico leads the way through this land of enchantment.
Customer Reviews:
Better Than Most Guidebooks About New Mexico, Although..........2006-12-10
Moon Handbooks' New Mexico Guidebook (6th Edition) was the second Moon Handbook that I purchased. The first one I purchased was Nevada by Deke Castleman (also 6th Edition) - which is very helpful and fun to read, by the way. Unfortunately, it was obvious while reading the New Mexico guidebook that the author, Stephen Metzger, does not live in New Mexico, and often seems unfamiliar with the state throughout the book. I really would have liked to have more information about the city of Rio Rancho (only one page for a city of about 66,000 people!). I have traveled to New Mexico twice since purchasing this book and have discovered a lot of beautiful places, good restaurants, and unusual retail establishments that were not mentioned. Although it does have some good information (better than most about New Mexico), this book barely scratches the surface.
Moon on New Mexico.......2006-11-13
Terrific information, a must buy for anyo camper/hiker visiting New Mexico.
Pretty good, there might be better ones out there.........2006-02-25
This book has good information; but it's missing a good overall state map and mileages between cities/towns.
Great Single State Guide for History Buffs.......2003-12-17
I recently, for 10 days, drove around New Mexico (5th largest State among the 50), seeking this and experiencing that, and I took with me five guides (Moon's, Fodor's, Off the Beaten Path, Roadside History and N.M. Sanctuaries, Retreats, and Sacred Places). Though Fodor's was the best guide for selecting accommodations and eateries, Moon's guide excelled in historical and tidbit descriptions.
What set this guide apart is the history, superior maps (especially compared to Fodor's) and Stephen Metzger's straightforward, clear, writing style. Metzger's introduction to New Mexico section is outstanding (The Land, Flora and Fauna, History, Economy and the People). This is an important contribution to understanding the State completely skipped by Fodor's. Also, Metzger's history of regions, cities, towns and pueblos is exemplary.
Where the guide falters is the weak descriptions of accommodations and restaurants, IE "The hotel is distinctly decorated" or "a discreet little inn with 12 rooms on an alleyway". After reading Fodor's vivid descriptions this was a serious step back. Also few, if any, website addresses for lodgings are found, and in a 2003 publication that is a serious omission. (Fodor's has website addresses).
If you are primarily interested in finding the best dining experiences and great accommodations Fodor's is my pick. But, for a State guide that is strong on overview and excellent in the history are you can't beat Metzger (however, also check out Roadside History of New Mexico). Strongly Recommended
Slight mistake in one of the reviews.......2002-08-20
As the author of this book, I feel compelled to respond to the reviewer from San Diego (May 29, 2002), who claimed that my Carlsbad research was poor, that I recommended White's City, which the locals call a "laughing stock," and that I failed to mention the Stevens Motel. One needn't look too closely at the book to see that I call White's City a "touristy and gimmicky souvenir stop" and do in fact recommend the Stevens Motel (though under accommodations, not under food). Both of these references are on page 194 of the current edition. Thank you.

Great!.......2006-06-21
Does a very good job of covering a large area. This book exhibits the best of the Lonely Planet series: a combination of facts, interesting suggestions, opinion and background information. Good maps and graphics. I like that camping suggestions are included for many places.
Lonely No More.......2005-09-10
Living in Australia, planning a road trip around the Southwest is not an easy consideration. I received this book and suddenly the Southwest was withing smelling distance. The reading is easy and expressive. I have a clear idea of where I will go and what I will do. No matter if I were travelling with children or on my own, I'd be clear about what is available to me. This will be the trip of a lifetime and this sensational book is a catalyst for my planning. Fully enjoyable, this book allows the magic of anticipation to grab me and give me colourful dreams.
Used It, Read It, Loved It........2005-07-31
This book was incredibly helpful to me. The maps are awesome. It's organized well. I hiked and did Route 66. The book was great for both. The table of contents is super accessible. Buy it and take it everywhere!
Authors don't like New Mexico.......2004-02-25
I purchased this book before a recent visit to Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Taos. I lived in Albuquerque for 4 years about 6 years ago, but I hoped to find new insigts on places to eat, explore, etc. Basically the guidebook told me where not to go. It failed to mention some excellent restaurants in Albuquerque including The Dog House, Las Mananitas, Il Vicino, etc. In Santa Fe I attended a class at the Santa Fe School of Cooking which was a five star class - not mentioned in the guidebook. In Taos I visited a community of alternative homes constructed of tires and cement (earthships.com will explain more) - again not mentioned in the book. I did go to look at a ruin near Espanola that was recommended, but the reservation does not allow admittance.
Your standard LP book.......2003-07-02
I have recently encountered poor Lonely Planet books, but this was not one of them. It is the good old LP at work.
The coverage of Las Vegas, however, was extremely poor. I spent there 24 hours and this book didn't have enough info for even that short of a trip. The rest is great.
The California LP had twice as much info on Las Vegas.

Maps are provided for each destination along with descriptions of tourist attractions and listings for more than 500 campgrounds. Native American sites and desert habitats are also of interest in this region, making it a great vacation destination for families with children—and perfect for those people who want to escape to a warm climate during the winter.

Southwest camping review.......2007-05-15
Guess I should have read the title better. Book was written to follow their destinations. If you have your own itinerary book was hard to use, if not impossible. It listed campground location in longitude and latitude, good if your using a GPS. Not so good if you weren't. It did not have a complete list of campgrounds for the areas.
Just wasn't what I needed.
Great guide.......2007-05-07
This book has been very helpful in planning our upcoming trip. Helped make decisions and find alternatives.
Excellant RV travel guide!.......2007-02-11
This book is intended to be a travel and adventure guide and succeeds extraordinarily well. Don't expect it to replace the Woodall's or Trailer Life catalogs and their rating systems. You want this book to help you plan RV vacations or weekends filled with adventure, historic way points and scenic sites. Additionally, it includes extensive listings of parks for snowbirds who spend more time in the southwest.
Bare minimum of information.......2007-01-31
This book does list many campgrounds, but it fails to give any kind of a rating or opinion. If you're trying to decide on where the best place to camp is, it isn't helpful at all. All you get is a list a amenities and the location. No pictures, but it does include a few maps.
Outstanding! The best Southwest RV Guide........2006-12-10
Excellent reference guide for RV travelers and snowbirds. We just spent six weeks traveling throughout Arizona and New Mexico with additional brief trips to Las Vegas and Lake Havasu City. This book became our first choice for campgound selection and tourist destination ideas. The section on snowbird parks is the best. This is truly a comprehensive and easy to use guidebook.

Customer Reviews:
Great descriptions and photos, crude maps.......2006-07-29
Laurence Parent is a well-known photographer - his photos illustrating this book are superb (wish there were more) and his descriptions of these drives in New Mexico are great...the maps are crude but serviceable. They are better than the very rough ones in his Hiking New Mexico, though...I've driven almost all the routes described and got my money's worth many times over - the book is well-used and always with me on my New Mexico trips.
