Great Gift!.......2007-08-10
I purchased this book for my daughter to give her friend as a gift. It was given to a young boy turning six, who knows everything about ships especially the Titanic. He loved it! I would definitely purchase again.
great pictures.......2007-08-05
Though a child's book, well illustrated for those interested in this ship and tired of maps.
Only regret, wish it were more illustrated and does not give break down of lifeboat capacity boat by boat though provides overall lifeboat and passenger capacity.
Inside the Titanic: A Giant Cut-away Book.......2007-04-01
I bought this book for my grandson's 7th birthday. He is into everything Titanic. He loves it.
Big book for small Titanic fans!!.......2007-01-21
I purchased this book for my 4 and a half-year-old son, which is now fascinated by all things Titanic. I felt the tragic nature of the story; the excessive text of most books and the content of the movies were not suitable for kids. When I found this book I knew it would be just right for a him.
The size of the book was the first thing that amazed my son. Then he was impressed with the dominant artwork inside. Marschall's illustrations are simply wonderful. He's indeed a great artist and an expert when it comes to the Titanic. The book illustrates the great ship, its interiors and it's ultimate demise as it follows the story of two real-life children that were aboard the Titanic on her maiden voyage.
My son was so excited after we finished the book that he insisted to take it to school where his teacher had a reading for the whole class.
great pictures.. facts.. and even a story.......2007-01-20
My 4 year old son got this book from his Nana for Christmas. He wants to read it every night. It is filled with great pictures, including a huge 4 page fold out. The pictures are colorful and very detailed. It is also filled with great facts, and even a story. Couldn't ask for a better book on the Titanic.
Book Description
In the blockbuster that created a nationwide buzz, Bernard Goldberg takes aim at America Bashers, Hollywood Blowhards, Intellectual Thugs, Lawyers -- and lots more! And now he adds ten brand-new miscreants to his rogues' gallery. While this is serious stuff, Goldberg will make you laugh out loud as he harpoons some of the most ridiculous characters in America today. This is a book that has become the voice of the millions of Americans who feel no one speaks for them on what is perhaps the most vital issue of the day: the kind of country in which we all want to live.

"
The number one New York Times bestselling author of
Bias delivers another bombshell -- this time aimed at ...
100 People Who Are Screwing Up America
No preaching. No pontificating. Just some uncommon sense about the things that have made this country great -- and the culprits who are screwing it up.
Bernard Goldberg takes dead aim at the America Bashers (the cultural elites who look down their snobby noses at ""ordinary"" Americans) ... the Hollywood Blowhards (incredibly ditzy celebrities who think they're smart just because they're famous) ... the TV Schlockmeisters (including the one whose show has been compared to a churning mass of maggots devouring rotten meat) ... the Intellectual Thugs (bigwigs at some of our best colleges, whose views run the gamut from left wing to far left wing) ... and many more.
Goldberg names names, counting down the villains in his rogues' gallery from 100 all the way to 1 -- and, yes, you-know-who is number 37. Some supposedly ""serious"" journalists also made the list, including the journalist-diva who sold out her integrity and hosted one of the dumbest hours in the history of network television news. And there are those famous miscreants who have made America a nastier place than it ought to be -- a far more selfish, vulgar, and cynical place.
But Goldberg doesn't just round up the usual suspects we have come to know and detest. He also exposes some of the people who operate away from the limelight but still manage to pull a lot of strings and do all sorts of harm to our culture. Most of all,
100 People Who Are Screwing Up America is about a country where as long as anything goes, as one of the good guys in the book puts it, sooner or later everything will go.
This is serious stuff for sure. But Goldberg will also make you laugh as he harpoons scoundrels like the congresswoman who thinks there aren't enough hurricanes named after black people, and the environmentalist to the stars who yells at total strangers driving SUVs -- even though she tools around the country in a gas-guzzling private jet.
With
Bias, Bernard Goldberg took us behind the scenes and exposed the way Big Journalism distorts the news. Now he has written a book that goes even further. This time he casts his eye on American culture at large -- and the result is a book that is sure to become the voice of all those Americans who feel that no one is speaking for them on perhaps the most vital issue of all: the kind of country in which we want to live.

GREAT.......2007-09-01
Bernie Goldberg is by far one of the best political analysts in the Business. Honest and fair. Audiobook even better to hear him.
The Truth Hurts.......2007-08-29
Humorous, clever, insightful, painful at times, it's a valuable commentary from the kid from the Bronx.
Don't hate me because I'm a democrat!.......2007-08-07
On my list of 100 things screwing up America, #1 would be the narrow-minded comments that liberals and conservatives alike will make, and more alarmingly -- believe, about other human souls.
Here's a quote from another review posted on this site - about this book.
" There is little decency left in this world due to the people he talks about in this book."
Given that this book (and please don't be fooled into thinking otherwise) is an unobjective look at liberals, that comment is so alarming to me.
I don't disagree that many of the people and their words or actions cited in the book are "screwed up." Does that make the other ?? millions of liberals equally detestable? If the book would have talked about 100 idiots (equal opportunity political parties represented) that comment would be benign. But as the book makes no effort to answer it's title question objectively, it's credibility is lacking to say the least -- and it makes that comment an over-reaching comment to all liberals, and it's offensive. Not just to me, but to any sensible person.
A mildly amusing rant for the right, the book may be... but that quote demonstrates something really completely "screwed" up with many people. We need to think for ourselves, and have a little respect for mankind.
Full disclosure -- yes, I am a democrat and I spent my own hard earned money for this book (gasp) I was fairly certain it would be a one-sided rant, but I like to read all types of authors, consider other points of view... you get the picture. (I dare one of you on the right... to read one of Al Franken's book... or to go see "An Inconvenient Truth.")
Don't get me wrong... I don't mind a rant... even one-sided rants (because I think I'm smart enough to pick out the nonsense and it's interesting to hear them once in a while -- on either side of the fence.)
What an excellent concept for a book. How interesting and utterly smart it would have been if it were presented in a non-partisan manner. Come on..... we can't really believe that 50% of the population really make up 100% of the reasons America is screwed up. It's irresponsible. Don't we all know, love and respect friends, family, and neighbors who are on all sides of the political spectrum?) Sadly, the author is either that narrow-minded -- or he believed this would sell more books. (I think it's the latter to be honest with you. While he doesn't have a moments hesitation to dish up a one-sided rant - he obviously knows it's one-sided... but it's his side so --- who cares right?)
Sensible, objective, lover of mankind. (Even conservatives... except... I must admit... Ann Coulter:-) But then she would expect nothing less.
ARW
Interesting but closed-minded.......2007-07-27
I consider myself a conservative, so in many ways I agree with Goldberg's list of mostly-liberal individuals who are screwing up America by promoting a morally relative world-view rejecting all traditional value systems and by embracing their own hypocritical, extremist version of what they call "diversity." However, instead of presenting well-researched and well-reasoned arguments, Goldberg pulls the common-sense card and expects readers to see the names on the list, roll their eyes at the hapless politicans/celebrities/intellectuals, and accept that they are responsible for the crumbling of America because it's soooo obvious. This shows that Goldberg is writing not to persuade but to make some cracks at those who have different views than him and pat his fellow conservatives on the back. The book has the potential to be thought-provoking reading if it utilized facts rather than obviously out-of-context quotes and anecdotes to assail the listed and garner cheap laughs.
What is more, Goldberg completely disregards feminists as "crazies" and essentially denies that domestic violence is a HUGE problem in the united states today. On the contrary, I would argue that the indifferent attitudes toward domestic violence and those who express them are more detrimental to America than some of the feminists out there. And calling any group of people names is no way to work towards positive change, anyway. When will feminists on-the-fringe and dear Goldberg realize that, rather than isolating insults lobbed at opponents, balance and true open-mindedness and a seeking of middle-ground is the key to everything?
Ultimtely the book was mean-spirited and poorly researched, despite its glimmers of humor and sense. There have to be better conservative writers out there, or America really is going to have problems.
Bush should have been included!.......2007-07-26
The book starts with the Hiltons, and of course, the most notorious of them all, Paris! Paris is known worldwide, gaining a wide audience from both youngsters and adults. Shout the name Paris Hilton in the streets of say, Zanzibar or Timbuktu, and you will be instantly rewarded with facial expressions of instant recognition from the crowd. But why, and most importantly, how has she become a household name? Is it her home made porn movie seen by millions in the internet? But is she really screwing up America, or herself? Or is she entertaining America and just screwing around?
The author explores many other characters he feels are screwing up America. Some you might have never heard of. It would have been nice to include pictures of each person. Sometimes the name might not be recognizable but the face always is.
Two of his characters get little words to describe them: Courtney Love (# 95), gets two letters: Ho; and Michael Jackson (# 90) gets the following sentence: "If I have to explain it to you, you shouldn't be reading this book!" Amazingly, Jimmy Carter is ranked at number 6! And who gets the number one rank? You probably haven't guessed it: Michael Moore. And he gets a full page picture of himself too (the only one with a picture), and just the following quote: "They are possibly the dumbest people on this planet..." Moore is speaking of his fellow Americans.
Honestly, I am surprised he did not include President Bush Junior in his list. According to Europeans and probably the rest of the world, President Bush screwed up the image of America big time!!!!
I could not stop laughing. Was this book meant to be a serious work or comic, or both? I loved the exchange between Goldberg and Al Franken. It was just hilarious.
If you want to laugh out loud then pick up this book! If you are a believer in let bygones be bygones, then better not to read this book.

Six years after solving the mysteries surrounding the death of her father (in The Ruby in the Smoke), Sally Lockhart has set up her own consulting business. But her photographer friend, Fred Garland, has a habit of drawing her into his private detective work owing to her skill in both finances and firearms. When one of Sally's clients loses a large sum of money invested in a shipping firm and Fred encounters a conjurer on the lam from underworld thugs, the two begin to find links in these apparently disparate cases.
Exquisitely written and packed with a wonderfully diverse, often terrifying cast of characters and dark twists and turns of plot, the second installment of the Sally Lockhart trilogy--an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, a Booklist Editors' Choice, and a nominee for the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Mystery--is entirely impossible to put down. Make sure book 3, The Tiger in the Well, is close at hand as you near the end of this one. (Ages 12 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
The year is 1878, and Sally Lockhart has started her own financial consulting business. When a client loses a fortune in the unexpected collapse of a British shipping firm, Sally is determined to find out why. But as she comes closer to learning the identity of the firm's elusive owner, she discovers that her questions are far from simple --and that the answers could cost her her life.
"Fraud, fire, and bloody murder pursue Sally Lockhart in a fine sequel to The Ruby in the Smoke. Sally, now 22, is in business as a financial consultant. When she and her friends challenge corrupt financial interests, they find themselves in a web of intrigue that stretches from fetid slums of the poor to the corporate offices of the richest man in Europe. Sally's detective work reveals the connections between corrupt power and broken lives. The action is fast, scenes are tight and dramatic, the language is vivid, and the wealth of minor characters are sharply individualized. An immensely entertaining thriller."--(starred) Booklist. Reading level: 6.7.

Confusing, but good.......2007-10-05
I loved Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy so much, so I picked up his Sally Lockhart series to keep my glow going. They're really good; not quite as incredible as the HDM books, but very interesting, engaging and suspenseful. I loved the first book in the series. This one, book 2, was a lot more confusing than book 1. I think there may have been too many characters to keep straight; I kept confusing their names and agendas. That said, it still gripped me and held me in the story through the end.
Puts the "Adult" back in "Young Adult".......2007-02-25
I greatly appreciate Pullman's tendency to treat young readers as capable of dealing with sophisticated ideas like religious controversy, drug addiction, violence, and sex. Indeed, youth deal with these things in their everyday lives, and they need literature that addresses them without the aggrandizement or gloss with which they are so often depicted on TV. This novel, with its vivid characters and life-like depictions of 19th century London, treats its young readers with respect.
Not ultimately satisfying.......2006-06-13
Having read the HIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy, I turned to this, the first so-called "Sally Lockhart" novel I have read, but the second in the series. There's a complex plot which, in its final analysis, doesn't make a whole lot of sense. There's a strange, irrational mixture of the supernatural and the mundane. There are two important female characters that are not brought to any kind of life, so that they are fundamentally voids in the page: Sally and Isabel. There's a villain who always seems to think two or three steps ahead of our (apparently nearly completely mindless) heroes, who basically just sit around or parade around waiting for someone to try to kill them, or succeed in killing them. And the villain himself is vanquished by a moronic, suicidal strategy that wouldn't trick or disarm even a tiny child in our universe. Precisely all these problems are also found everywhere in the DARK MATERIALS trilogy, so I suspect these problems will be found in all the books Pullman has written.
By the way, the "Sally Lockhart" books do not form a trilogy, whatever Amazon may say. Last time I counted there were four books in this series listed on Pullmann's website, and the copy of NORTH I have, a Canadian trade paperback, seems to list five or six different titles!?! I am not very eager to read any of the others!
Shadow in the North.......2005-12-12
Pullman, Philip. (1986). Shadow in the North.
New York: Random House, Inc.
In this book, Sally Lockhart is a financial consulatant and one of her clients, Miss Wlash, comes to see her. She says that since Sally told her to invest in a company called Anglo-Baltic, she has lost 3,270 punds. One of Sally's friends, Jim Taylor meets a stage magician called Makinnon. He tells Sally that Makinnon needs their help. Fred has proposed to Sally several times and she finally gives in and says yes. But that same night, Bellman has his men set fred's house on fire. Eveyone gets out okay, except fred who dies in the fire. Sally decides to go after Bellman and found out the truth behind the Steam Gun. Bellman is expecting her, and proposes to her (she says yes) and he agrees to show her the steam gun. After he explains how the steam gun works she shoots him with her gun.
One of the themes in this book is love, because Sally and Fred love each other, but she won't admit it until the very end.
I loved this book because it had many stall tactics, because throughout the whole book I was wondering if Sally would every say yes to Fred so they would get married. I thought this book was written really well.
The genre of this book is mystery. I would rate this book 4 stars, because it takes a long time to get into the story, but when it finally does, its awesome!
My first book by Philip Pullman- surely it is not the last one!.......2005-10-09
I'm truly amazed. The plot is astonishing, and characters are so realistic. I'm really looking forward to read more books by Philip Pullman.
I just wonder if kids aged 12 are able to understand all the problems and nuisances in "The Shadow in the North". Is this a book for teenagers...?
Book Description
In the tradition of John McPhee and Kathleen Norris, a wry, moving memoir about a family farm, a father, and a daughter, and why it's so hard to go home again
Debra Marquart grew up on a family farm in rural North Dakota-on land her family had worked for generations. From the earliest age she knew she wanted out; surely life had more to offer than this unyielding daily grind, she thought. But she was never able to abandon it completely.
In this distinctive, beautifully written memoir, she chronicles this process of flight and return-not only from and to a particular landscape, but to respect and admiration for her father. Complex, lyrical, utterly unsentimental, often funny, Marquart's singular voice offers a deeply intelligent rumination on the meaning of native ground, on freedom and security, and on the forging of identity. It brings to mind the very best of those who have written about the natural world and a sense of place-John McPhee, Wallace Stegner, and Kathleen Norris among them.
Customer Reviews:
Searing and funny memoir of coming of age in North Dakota........2007-05-31
Funny and bittersweet, this memoir captures the difficult relations between children and parents and will resonate with many American young women who took a path their parents didn't anticipate and struggle for recognition both at home and in the equally tough wider world of adulthood. Debra Marquart's a fine, fine writer--one to watch.
This book touched my heart!.......2007-01-10
Wow! Debra Marquart very accurately portrayed the essence of growing up "wild" in North Dakota in the 70's. She touched my heart and validated my experiences and memories of that time, too. I want more, more, more!
The farmers daughter.......2007-01-08
Is the name of a dress shop in our town. There are somethings that I know little about so I read this book. I did not learn much. Dakota weather is changing even if we don't realize it. Marquart must want to have her book read and I wanted to read it. I spose I always wanted to be blond and fresh faced from a square state but somehow this book did not reveal much Dakota truth for me. I did grow up wild and whoever chose that title might have been trying a little to hard to captivate readers.
Farm Girl Agrees: This Book is AMAZING!.......2006-12-08
As someone who grew up in the middle of nowhere I can attest to the fact that Debra Marquart's writing is spot on. She describes a very specific subculture of the U.S. (i.e., the upper Midwest) with humor, grace and uncanny truth. She gives voice to a kind of life that is rarely spoken of by those who have endured it. Her insights made me alternately crumple on the floor in tears and laugh out loud shouting "Yes!" Simply put, she gets it right. To top that, she's done her research, too; she mixes lots of interesting background information with excellent storytelling. I am giving this to all my exiled Midwestern friends for Christmas!
Dazzling Memoir.......2006-11-10
This is the most engaging book I've read in several years. Written with all the power that could be expected of an Iowa Writers Program Professor, it tells it's own story while exposing the desperate truths of all who've violently wrenched themselves out of home ground to find a life that fit. Blunt, funny, ironic and wry, its bravely openhearted look at a younger self made me look clearly at my own 20-year-old self, that I've disowned for over 35 years, and invite her back in.

My Review.......2007-06-14
Surviving The Applewhites is a awesome book and I think a lot of people would like it. Jake is my favorite character in the book because he dresses wierd. I think I'm like Jake because we both dress cool to get attention. This book makes me feel happy for Winston the dog because since Jake came the dog started being take care of and being loved. I think the kind of people hat the book would be good for is ages 6-12. I would like to read another like this book but not read it again.
My favorite part was when Destiny starts cussing. My least favorite part was the beginning of the story.
This Year's Delinquent is..........2007-03-16
Surviving the Applewhites is an awesome book! It's about a delinquent kid named Jake. Who goes through a lot of hard stuff in his life. His parents went to jail for selling wine. Jake smokes, cusses and has bright red hair in spikes. Also there is a rumor that Jake burned down his last school. So he now goes to a school named Creative Academy held by a crazy family called the Applewhites. They are the only people who believe there is any good in Jake. The book is about Jake going through changes. Jake has a little admirer named Destiny Applewhite! Destiny is trying everyway possible to be just like Jake. Jake also has a little admirer the Applewhites' dog named Winston. He looooooooooves Jake!!! He always barks when Jake leaves the house. E.D. one of the Applewhite girls doesn't care for Jake at all. She thinks he is absolutely disgusting in everyway. Read the Book to find out what changes Jake makes and what choices he decides to make. And to find out what weird things Destiny does to try to be like Jake.

For my son.......2007-01-15
My son was required to read this book for class. Instead of going to the library and checking it out I figured I would buy it here and donate it to the class when he was done. He read it and said it was a really good book.
I want to be an Applewhite!.......2007-01-08
I bought this book for my children, but I have to admit that I have read it several times over myself! Stephanie Tolan captures the essence of a whacky homeschooling family just perfectly. I love the way the parents encourage the children to follow their own dreams. I'd absolutely love to see a sequel, as the Applewhite family is too amazing to limit to just one book! I recommend this for kids at a grade 5 or higher reading level. There is reference to smoking, arson, and bad language, but in the end, even the "bad" kid turns out to be a winner. This might be just the thing to help a smart kid in poor circumstances to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
The novel you wished you read!!.......2006-12-01
Jake Semple, a boy of destruction, started living with the Applewhite family about a year ago. His adjusment to his new home was awkward. The Applewhites were an artistic family. E.D., a nonartistic Applewhite, was the only one who actually helped Jake get settled in. Although they didn't get along very well, it was her duty to welcome him with open arms. With Randolph, the Applewhite father, constructing his play and Sybil, the Applewhite mother, building her novel, the Applewhite clan was very busy all the time. When things start to go wrong with Randolph's play, everyone's life is turned upside down! There whole life starts to revovle around the play. With teamwork and responsibility, the family manages to pull it together. I definitely feel like this book was absolutely amazing! You kids should definitely read this book.

Book Description
For the legions of readers spellbound by WITCH CHILD, here’s the fascinating next chapter - thanks to a Native American descendant with an uncanny link to the past.
Agnes closed her eyes in the heat and steam of the sweat lodge. She woke to air that was dry and cold around her. She was no longer Agnes, or even Karonhisake, Searching Sky. She was no longer American or Haudenosaunee. She was English, and her name was Mary, and she woke to find that she was dying, freezing to death.
It came to Agnes unbidden - a vision of Mary Newbury, alone in the snow, dying of the cold. A vision of a young woman who had lived in the 1600s, who had been driven from her Puritan settlement, accused of being a witch. It was an image of a woman whose life was about to change radically as she embarked on an existence that defied all accepted norms - embracing passionate independence, love, and loyalty to a proud, endangered community that accepted her as one of their own. Mary’s and Agnes’s lives have been separated by almost 400 years, but they are inextricably linked by more than blood. For, like Mary, Agnes has special powers - and Mary now seeks these powers to ensure that the rest of her story is told.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent read!.......2007-09-28
This sequal to Witch Child was a very wonderful read. It starts off with a Native American girl, Agnes, who is in college and had read the book Witch Child. She had the sneeking suspicion that the Mary in the book was the same Mary that she knew from stories told to her from her family.
The book goes to different points of view, first Agnes, then Alison, then both, and then Mary. It was not hard to keep up tho, and whenever it did switch point of view it was told who it was each time at the top of the page.
I found it very interesting how much Native American culture they added into this book. Agnes's visions and her time in the sweat lodge made for a very interesting read.
The continuation with Mary's story was excellent as well, finding out what happened to her at the end of the first book. Then also how she continued with her own life with her new family.
I also found the background notes very interesting, it takes you back to some of the characters that were introduced in the first book. It tells what happened to them after Mary left.
All in all it was a great read and a very nice sequal, all the loose ends were tied up by the end of it. It was a book that when I finished, it just gave me a nice feeling of completeness.
It's fantastic to read a book by an author that makes it seem so very real, right down to the last detail. Celia Rees did an excellent job when she wrote Witch Child and Sorceress.
If I Am A Witch They Will Soon Now It.......2006-12-15
Like the previous novel Witch Child, this book was definitely a page-turner as well. At the end of each page, I would get more and more interested in the way that the Natives Americans would communicate with the sprits. The Native Americans also had to prepare for their spiritual encounter with Mary. I personally love fiction novels. Just knowing that the story that you are reading is based on a true story amazes me. It is said to be read by 5th graders, but I think the 6th, 7th, 8th grade would be the right age group because of its mature vocabulary and content. I love Celia Rees' way of writing. It adds suspense to a good story, and excitement to a boring one. Let me tell you, that while reading this book my mind wandered quite a few times. I would sometimes think what it would be like to be that character for that moment. It's fun to pretend you are in the story. I recommend this book to all experienced readers, because of the high vocabulary skills and mature content.
Great book..couldn't put it down........2006-11-10
I had to purchase this sequal to Witch Child. It was a must to continue the journey of the quilt. The beliefs of past centuries and the Indian culture were so vivid in the writings of Celia Rees. You have to read both books!
Very dull sequel........2006-06-24
"Sorceress" was very, very disappointing. "Witch Child" was interesting, mystifying, and intriguing. This book held none of those qualities, and I just felt obligated to finish it. Author Celia Rees should have just made a sequel to the book, without using Agnes and Alison. Those two characters made the story stop and go, ruining any and all flow. The conclusion of Mary's life was mundane and boring - nothing at all like the rest of her life. What a letdown. I do not recommend.
Sorceress .......2006-04-21
This book was good for a sequel because it follows up the amazing characters in Witch Child. I liked it because you actually got to find out what happened to some of the characters because Witch Child sort of left you hanging. And I really wanted to see what happened. I really was sad at some of the parts but I was very pleased with how this turned out.
PS. My friend Lara is leaning on me so I must stop this review short.
Book Description
Here is a richly drawn and vibrantly personal exploration of America's supreme river.
Some of my best time on the River has been in the company of game wardens, biologists, commercial fishermen, clammers, trappers, hunters, and a smelly, mud-smeared coterie of river rats in general, wrote John Madson of his thirty-year acquaintance with the Mississippi. UP ON THE RIVER takes us into this world, with forays into the river's fascinating history and ecology. This is a loving and sometimes uproariously funny tribute, full of unforgettable characters and creatures. Like Joseph Mitchell's Up in the Old Hotel or William Warner's Beautiful Swimmers, this is a classic book about a singular American place.
An experienced biologist, conservationist, and outdoorsman, John Madson traveled America from the Rockies to the Florida Everglades. His books include Where the Sky Began, which was named a New York Times Notable Book of 1982; Out Home; and Stories From Under the Sky. Madson died in 1995, leaving behind a rich legacy.

An accurate description of life along the upper river........1999-01-11
Madson's book is a refreshingly accurate and honest disclosure of the lives of those who have made their lives along the banks of the upper Mississippi. He takes the time to get to know those people and then he welcomes the reader into their homes, stores, and living rooms. Reminiscent of a Steinbeck, "Travels With Charlie", the reader is charmed into the history and personality of the river towns and their people from Beaver Island to Harper's Ferry. Madson's understanding of the river and his ability to share it with all readers, regardless of their previous Mississippi River experience, is a tribute to "River Rats" everywhere. This book is a Terry Redlin in text form.

The true story at last!.......2001-01-14
The subtitle of this book tells it all -- THE TRUE STORY OF THE APPALACHIAN MURDER THAT INSPIRED ONE OF AMERICA'S MOST POPULAR BALLADS. The author has done meticulous research into the murder of Laura Foster which was popularized by the Kingston Trio. He uses court records, newspaper accounts, and other documents to authenticate his findings about her murder and the trial, conviction, and execution of Tom Dooley. I have read many accounts of the crime, but none were so well documented, and this time I feel that I have an understanding of what really happened. The reader gets to know not only the facts of the case, but also the central figures, their families and neighbors, and the law and court officials. The background information also provides a picture of life in the foothill of North Carolina during the second half of the nineteenth century.
Even though the account sometimes reads like a history book and gets bogged down with details, it is a fascinating book and should be enjoyed by anyone who has an interest in history and who has ever hummed along with "The Ballad of Tom Dooley."
