Book Description

Genetic deafness affects 1 in 1000 children, and over the last decade several dozen of the responsible genes have been identified. This unique textbook aims to assist clinicians dealing with deaf patients and families by critically reviewing all relevant published material on genetics, pathology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and laboratory findings. Thoroughly revised, the Second Edition has been updated throughout and includes a new chapter on hearing loss with cardiovascular disorders. It continues with the successful formula of presenting separate chapters on deafness associated with findings in specific body systems. Careful attention to cross referencing between chapters means that the multifaceted clinical presentations of distinct conditions are highlighted. These clinical variations are complemented by excellent clinical photographs, audiograms, figures from essential laboratory or other investigations, and comprehensive reference lists. Gene mutations that cause deafness are highlighted throughout the text, both in chapters dealing with syndromes and in a vastly expanded chapter focusing specifically on nonsyndromic forms of deafness. Thus, the new edition reflects all the progress on the molecular understanding of deafness made in recent years and integrates these findings into clinical practice. It also makes an important contribution to the cataloguing of new syndromes that have emerged in recent years, such as HIDS and X-linked maxillofacial dysostosis.

With more than 3,000 entries on every aspect of wine from vine pests to specific grapes, this hefty tome has something for both the seasoned connoisseur and novice alike. Edited by one of today's premier wine columnists, the work covers all aspects of wine, travelling back in time to early Greece to examine wine's role in Dionysian revels, then returning to today's wine centers to explore all aspects of wine appreciation. A full third of the book is dedicated to specific wines and wine-producing regions. All those technical terms you've heard and puzzled over at tastings are clearly explained, making this the perfect reference for newcomers to the world of oenology.

For the true connoisseur, The Oxford Companion offers detailed information on the history of the vintner's art, as well as a plethora of details on everything from climate effects on vine disease to the function of the second malolactic fermentation. If you buy only one wine book, this should be it.

Book Description

Published in 1994 to worldwide acclaim, the first edition of Jancis Robinson's seminal volume immediately attained legendary status, winning every major wine book award including the Glenfiddich and Julia Child/IACP awards, as well as writer and woman of the year accolades for its editor on both sides of the Atlantic. Combining meticulously-researched fact with refreshing opinion and wit, The Oxford Companion to Wine presents almost 4,000 entries on every wine-related topic imaginable, from regions and grape varieties to the owners, connoisseurs, growers, and tasters in wine through the ages; from viticulture and oenology to the history of wine, from its origins to the present day. Now exhaustively updated, this third edition incorporates the very latest international research to present almost 400 new entries on topics ranging from globalization and the politics of wine to brands, precision viticulture, and co-fermentation. Hundreds of entries have undergone major revision, among them yeast, barrel alternatives, climate change, and virtually all wine regions; and useful lists and statistics are appended, including controlled appellations and their permitted grape varieties, and wine production and consumption by country. Illustrated with maps of every important wine region in the world, useful charts and diagrams, and stunning colour photographs, this Companion is unlike any other wine book, offering an understanding of wine in all of its wider contexts - notably historical, cultural, and scientific - and serving as a truly companionable point of reference into which any wine-lover can dip and browse.

5 out of 5 stars The Oxford Companion to Wine.......2007-09-10

This is an excellent resource for any topic related to wine. It is well researched and written, containing a wealth of information for any wine enthusiast. It is easy to navigate and read, making it highly recommended. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A Most Incredible Wine Reference Book.......2007-08-08

This book is truly incredible and can best be described as an encyclopedia of wine. Printed on 816 pages of fine paper with sporadic full color photographs and pencil drawings, it is atypical of other books on wine. There no novice section, stemware identification guide or chapter on building your own cellar. This is the book you want in you hands to aid in locating those rare areas of production and defining little known terms. Robinson draws on approximately 150 contributors, highly qualified experts in their respective fields, to author select entries.

4 out of 5 stars THE wine encyclopedia.......2007-06-28

search anything about wine? it's there. Just great, very accurate and up-to-date. The only disadvantage in my view is that for complete information about some subjects you have to follow refences throughout the book. On the other hand is that a great way to browse it.
In all respects a book worth recommending!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Update on the installation issues.......2007-05-16

Some of the reviewers commented about installation/operation issues with Windows XP SP2. I had that same issue until I downloaded a Microsoft update KB\924867, and now things work fine. I don't mean to sound like a help desk but that's what the OED tech support folks said to do--they were pretty responsive to my call as why this wasn't working. As I said, it's working fine now.

Also, program runs without a disc in the CD drive, although the manual says you need to insert the CD once every ninety days to revalidate (it starts warning you 20 days prior to this, I'm told)which I don't think is too onerous.

1 out of 5 stars Copy protection makes this program unusable.......2007-03-09

At first, I was delighted to have this software. I love dictionaries and thought having one at my fingertips would be great. Then the program's copy protection kept demanding I place the original CD into the cd player over and over. I completely stopped using the program -- which is quite expensive -- because of this hassle. I am very sorry I purchased it.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't work with Windows XP SP 2.......2007-02-13

I wish I could tell you more about the product, but I can't get it to load. Apparently the security features are so robust that it won't run if you are using XP with service pack 2. After contacting tech support we had a run a hotfix (and hour and a half on the phone with Microsoft tech support as their download file was corrupt), then I installed the hotfix, the program ran one time, and now won't work again.

I guess the answer is that if you really want the dictionary you might as well cough up the $800 and be done with it.

3 out of 5 stars Get the OED for free.......2007-01-25

A lot of local libraries offer access to the online OED for free. All you need is a library card, and you can access a number of online databases, including the OED legally and for nothing!

I don't know if all libraries support this, but I live in Los Angeles, and I can get it.

2 out of 5 stars Information Aplenty, nevertheless, Uncongenial and Futile........2007-01-16

This is a very interesting program. On the positive side, Oxford is very reputable and one can claim with some certainty that all the entries have been thoroughly researched and are correct. Nevertheless, there are negative attributes aplenty. For starters, the price is too high. The paper format costs over $[&]and the software over $[&]. So the first question is whether it's worth spending so much money when today we have such fantabulous online dictionaries, such as dictionary.com, which are very useful and costless. I personally did not think it was worth it to spend so much on this program, but decided to use it since my friend had obtained it. I wanted to see the scope of its profundity.

One terrible lack of this 1.40 GB program is that it is bereft of a thesaurus! That's unabsolvable. These days a thesaurus is unexpendable for building a sizable vocabulary. In addition, the vocabulary is rendered useless even if you make simple errata. For example, if you spell "punctilious" with an additional "l" so that it reads "punctillious," you will get no results and no suggestions. Same thing applies if you skip the second "n" in "cantankerous." How can such simple mistakes make OED (Oxford English Dictionary) so futile is beyond my comprehension. Any free online dictionary can handle even the most egregious spelling errors. Even Microsoft Word can correct seemingly incorrigible errors. So this was very discouraging. It's not that one can't find how to properly spell a given word, but rather that it will be too time consuming to use the internet or a different application every time OED gives you a message "No Results." You cannot know whether the word isn't there you have misspelled it.
OED isn't complete either. Believe it or not a simple word like "unexpendable" is not in the dictionary. I have been only using this dictionary for a few days and the list of missing words will grow as time goes by.

Notable among many other flaws are the pronunciation keys. The symbols used are fairly complicated so that one must spend some time trying to learn how to decipher the pronunciation symbols. We buy a dictionary to learn vocabulary, not some arcane symbols that none of us is going to use. Deciphering pronunciation does not signify erudition and should not be so esoteric. Many great online dictionaries not only have very useful and simple keys, but also have an audio that will pronounce the word for you.
So far I discussed the general flaws of the dictionary, but the program itself is problematic and at times toilsome to use. Every so often you have to place the CD in your drive for the program to "authenticate" itself. This creates too many hassles, especially if you have another disk in the drive that requires constant access (e.g., a research program). I have a fast computer (AMD 4200+ with 2GB Ram and 512 MB Graphics Card) which is far beyond the recommended speed by Oxford. Even so, the program is sometimes too sluggish, especially after one of its "authentication" sessions. A lot of users complain about the austere security system. The irony here is that even though the security system seems so rigorous, it is anything but that. Not only can one copy all the CDs, but the authentication key can be copied to the computer and mounted through a free software called Daemon Tools without ever having to load the Oxford watermarked CD in the drive. Any person who knows the computer at an intermediate/beginner-advanced level can do this, which means all those people and students who do not know about computers so much and had to get the software version of this dictionary because they couldn't afford the paper version must suffer needlessly.

In conclusion, I have to say that this dictionary is not worth its price. Unless you MUST know the origin of every single word and when it first appeared, this dictionary won't be so extraordinary. Most of the times we don't look for those properties, yet even online dictionaries provide more and more of that information. For someone trying to save money and time the best solution would be to subscribe to dictionary.com. It can be used for free, but if extra features (like an audio of how the given word is pronounced) are absolutely necessary, one can subscribe for about $20 a year. For the prices of Oxford one can gain more than 10 years access to this site. I have been using that website for many years and am not sure whether OED will be able to substitute it for me. Their Thesaurus is also the finest I have ever encountered. It is very thorough. The only software thesaurus that comes close is the Visual Thesaurus. I can't wait until dictionary.com releases its own unabridged software version.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The most recommended Latin dictionary.......2007-08-13

The most complete, useful and easy-to-use Latin dictionary available. It covers Classical Latin up to the 2nd or 3rd century. It does not include Medieval or Christian Latin.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-07-30

This review refers to 2006 printing. Beautifully printed and bound in Italy. The text is large enough for this middle-aged pair of eyes and very clear. Very comprehensive. Came with hardcover embossed with the Oxford University coat of arms and a transparent plastic protective cover (removable). Good for graduate-level studies onward.

One criticism: There is apparently no consistent way of indicating 3rd declension i stem (with genitive plural in -ium).

5 out of 5 stars Superb Dictionary; lousy binding.......2007-07-18

I've wanted this dictionary for some time and finally got to a level that justified the expenditure. The text is quite marvellous. However, the book sufffered from the same defect as my Oxford Dictionary of English and New Oxford Thesaurus of English: within no time at all the binding came away. I returned it to Amazon, who sent me a replacement, but the volume suffered from the same defect. Amazon have said that they will not send me another, but will refund me, as this issue has occured with other customers. I've complained to OUP, who have not considered it necessary to respond. I still give the dictionary 5 stars for content, but OUP really need to sort this flaw out, particularly given the price. Makes one hesitant to invest in the forthcoming new edition of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Latin students.......2005-05-11

There is no other place to start when looking for the history of specific Latin words and phrases. This dictionary is a must for all those who have more than a passing interest in the Latin language. It is clearly laid out and the text is very readible. Overall a great resource.

5 out of 5 stars The Oxford Latin Dictionary- A Must Have.......2004-09-06

There are many reasons to recommend this superb reference work, here are a few. Firstly, as to be expected, clear and accurate definitions are given for even the most obscure words. Secondly, there is high quality in the book and binding. Thirdly, the excellent type-face makes for easy reading. And lastly, there is great pleasure in adding such a seminal work in lexography to one's library.

Book Description

When Oxford's Atlas of the World debuted in 1992, it was widely praised for the incredible beauty and accuracy of its maps as well as for its wealth of geographic data, and it has only collected more praise with each edition since. The New York Times Book Review called it a "veritable encyclopedia of geographic and demographic information, profusely illustrated with multicolored maps and graphs," while the Baltimore Sun has declared it "a handsome, useful, inspiring thing to have." Building on the integrity of its first edition and the strong sales of the twelfth, the Atlas should remain at the forefront of essential geographic resources. Full of maps of urban areas worldwide, the 13th edition adds Orlando, Florida, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Montreal, Quebec for a total of 70 cities. As ever, the colorful 48-page "Introduction to World Geography" section-beautifully illustrated with tables and graphs-provides a wealth of information on such topics as climate, the greenhouse effect, plate tectonics, agriculture, population and migration, and global conflicts. Plus, as in past editions, the Atlas has been thoroughly updated to reflect the changing world around us. The completion of the Tibet Railway linking Tibet with the rest of China, the opening of five new international airports, the appearance of new regions in Denmark and new provinces in Rwanda, and dozens of other improvements make this the most reliable atlas on the market. The 13th edition also boasts several new features: the latest nameforms in Korea and Greece, new maps of Ethiopia, Kazakhstan, Korea, and Taiwan, as well as additional map detail in Australia showing aboriginal areas. Current census statistics produce a table showing the most up-to-date population figures for major world cities, and a redesigned index makes searching the book easier than ever. Providing the finest global coverage available, the Atlas of the World is not only the best-selling volume of its type, it has become the benchmark by which all other atlases are measured. The Chicago Sun-Times went so far as to proclaim "you can't do better than the Atlas of the World, 12th Edition," although the 13th may very well prove them wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Atlas of the World, 13th Edition.......2007-07-30

I am quite satisfied with this purchase of a second-hand copy of the World Atlas. It is in very good shape and gives me exactly the information I was seeking.
Due to the heaviness of the book and the large size, the back binding was coming lose as I received it in the mail. I doubt that that is a fault of the previous owner of the book, but of the quality of the binding for such a large, awkward size book.

5 out of 5 stars very nice.......2007-06-15

There's a ton of options out there, I paged through quite a few before settling on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Atlas.......2007-05-07

We bought this atlas as a birthday gift for my husband's mother. She loves it and has thanked us for it several times. She likes to reference this book while she is watching television shows on the history channel.

5 out of 5 stars A Great General Purpose Atlas.......2007-03-22

I compared this atlas to it's closest rival, the National Geographic Atlas and chose this one because it is smaller and lighter. The NG Atlas is just too heavy to hold on your lap or get off a bookshelf. Also, I can't explain why, but I have never liked the format of NG maps.
The Oxford Atlas has more pages of maps, but since the NG Atlas is larger the level of detail is comparable.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-09-27

This book is an excellent resource for an ESL class or for someone learning Spanish. The entries are accompanied by pictures and organized in a logical way for reference. Like most Spanish Dictionaries, this is more geared towards Spain, but good for Latin American Spanish too. We live in Mexico and are learning Spanish. We refer to it often. It's fun to just browse through as well. Excellent investment.

5 out of 5 stars Great noun resource for students of English.......2007-05-28

I'm an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher and use these dictionaries in class. My students inevitably want to buy their own copies and are delighted to find that they are available in bilingual editions for many languages.

The categorical organization of the dictionaries and the inclusion of many everyday items makes them very valuable for those students who are living in the U.S. (and presumably other Western English-speaking countries). My only criticism would be that they don't include any computer-related terms; this could be addressed in a new edition.

Speaking of which, I haven't switched to the so-called "New Oxford Picture Dictionary" because it has far fewer vocabulary items.

Despite the bilingual editions, I don't consider these books to be as useful for English speakers trying to learn a foreign language as for English learners living in the U.S., because the content and categories reflect shopping, homes, services, clothes, and so forth as they are experienced in the U.S. and similar countries.

Another potential area of disappointment is that the OPD should not be one's only English dictionary, since, being pictorial, it is suited to nouns but not to verbs or concepts. As a noun dictionary, it's excellent.

I have not used the extensive additional teaching materials that are available for these dictionaries.

This is a wonderful book and very useful to anyone learning spanish or english.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Useful.......2006-12-27

I work in a restaurant staffed with mostly spanish-speaking workers so I bought this book to assist in communication. The organization of terms and the comprehensive nature of the book make it invaluable. My Mexican co-workers want copies for themselves!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource.......2006-11-11

Trying to learn even the basic rudiments of a new language requires much memorization and practice. Good visual aids are a must unless you are especially gifted in languages (or grew up abroad). This dictionary is a great aid to learning important everyday vocabulary. The organization by themes (food, health, clothing, work, everyday language in different settings) make it easy to use if staying in a Spanish speaking country for a while. I am currently enrolled in a beginning college level class and use it for review and new words. The visuals are easier for me to remember than straight flash cards, although I use both.

Book Description

Design education, research, and practice have recently seen considerable evolution as university programs, researchers, journals, and conferences systematize design as a discipline and science. Nam P. Suh's book Axiomatic Design: Advances and Applications contributes to this systematic and scientific base and presents a fresh perspective on design, establishing a rational framework for the discipline. The book follows Suh's successful publication, The Principles of Design (OUP 1990), although the two books are substantially different in both content and approach. The first three chapters of Axiomatic Design cover the fundamental principles of axiomatic design. The following chapters offer a complete treatment of the design of systems, software, materials and materials processing, manufacturing systems, and product design. Suh shows how a scientific and systematic approach to design improves efficiency, productivity, savings, reliability, and quality for industries that currently rely on ad hoc design systems; Axiomatic Design contains the principles and practical knowledge necessary to achieve these improvements. Perfect for senior and graduate design and mechanical engineering students as well as professional engineers, this unique text offers the tools necessary to design with ease and elegance and serves as a stepping-stone in the ever-evolving intellectual science of design. Features BL Applies the principles of axiomatic design to a variety of real-life situations including mechanism design, software engineering, and basic business processes BL Includes numerous integrated case studies using axiomatic design to solve real-life design challenges BL Draws material from consulting cases with industrial firms throughout the world BL Requires no prerequisite reading (The Principles of Design can be read for clarification)

1 out of 5 stars Very questionable science, and many errors in text.......2005-12-08

I bought this book for a readings class this semester. I don't have a suitable vocabulary to describe how poor it is. The text is inconsistent and full of errors. The author blathers on without concluding much. He references his previous work and that of PhD theses (which I can only assume are his own students). I question the underlying assumptions of his theory but it is never fleshed out in sufficient detail to be understood and examined.

Some examples:

Page 8, the author discusses history, "there were no exceptions or counterexamples (to Newton's laws) until Einstein advanced the theory of relativity". Really? How about Maxwell's equations, the Michelson-Morley experiments, the theory of the ether, Mercury's orbit around the Sun?

Page 18, The author uses matrix algebra notation and operations on nonlinear equations. Superposition does not apply to nonlinear equations.

Example 1-13, consists of a redesign problem where one constraint is "no increase in cost", and the solution to the example problem is to add a component to the existing design. And that component is free?

Title of one section: "Reduction of uncertainty: Conversion of a design with time-dependent combinatorial complexity to a design with time-dependent periodic complexity".

It goes on. I made it about 100 pages into it.

4 out of 5 stars What is important here?.......2004-02-22

One of great emerging ideas in the past 20 years is that there are tools to help in the design of robust products and systems. There are other approaches: TRIZ, QFD and other heuristic-based methods. There are also references to Dr. Taguchi's robust design methods (DFSS). The point is that the author here has made his point - DFSS as applied to multi-requirement products and systems... and that includes just about every product/system we use and need... has an overlooked flaw. Read this book to understand what that flaw is and how to address it.

Is the material here ambitious and audacious? Well... yes, wouldn't it be if the author were on to something? I think that the key here is to understand where this information can be immediately used in engineering practice. The principle of design decoupling and Okcam's Razor are not particularly new ideas, but the way that the author is approaching the subject is important. He is trying to get a handle on something that has been to date very heuristically practiced, and often not well executed. If one understands the principles of, for instance, software engineering, it doesn't take long to understand where the author is going with his subject. Suh is a mechanical engineer (MIT), and this fact, in itself, is very surprizing and encouraging. The axioms that Suh present are necessary in order to achieve some sort of order to the discussion. I personally have managed to get past the initial objections to his reuse of certain terms and emphasis on certain axioms. For instance, Suh's principle of "minimum information content" is actually a statement about "less is more" in design from a reliability and design-robustness perspective.

Now for potential buyers: understand that there are applications of this method and theory that are extremely powerful and effective. This method has great implications to the field of systems engineering - it ties the SE discipline to something that you can get your hands on. In particular, look to the application of the method to the design of physical systems and their corresponding manufacturing systems. This isn't a trivial or invalid subject.

People who need ways to handle complexity and the total system design problem will benefit as will designers of common products. Software and hardware designers can both benefit, although the author uses language that is more recognizable in the realm of mechanical engineering and manufacturing systems. This material will take some time to integrate into your own storehouse of knowledge - so don't rush it. Approach this material with a need in hand, but with the understanding that it will likely modify your view of your discipline. Then you will make use of this material. Note the bibliographies; dig into the applications of this theory. You won't be disappointed in the outcome.

2 out of 5 stars A False Science.......2002-03-08

Is design a science? Or, can design be a science?
The author tries to conclude the principles for "good designs" into two axioms, then use them as the scientific approach to conduct the design activities. It is ambitious and audacious. Unfortunately, this is a false science. The paradox of the author's intent lies on the fact that science, by definition, should be repeatable and universal. However, regardless of the two controversial "axioms", which have been refuted in many literature among the design community, they themselve do not guarantee that different people will arrive on the same design. They are, at most, two design principles that may not be 100% true, depending on the cases.
The domain and tasks of design, is too broad and versatile to be abstracted by any "axioms", 'cause design is a mental process of creativity, and so far no one can sucessfully describe creativity in scientific terms.
Therefore, the answer is "no" to the question in the beginning of the review, at least not for this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Prayers For Ecumenical Services.......2007-06-02

I have found this book to be of great value in my Ecumenical relations with other faiths.
I have also found for myself a deep spiritual renewal in reading this book.
I recommend this Book of Common Prayer to all that value the wisdom within other faiths.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good!.......2007-05-14

Well, I can't rate the BCP anything but positive. My only concern was I failed to read the size of the book and it was smaller then I would have liked, the pages are thin, but at the same time feel very "strong." It has the Daily Office and the complete Psalter. If only I had read the dimensions, I am sure I would have opted for a larger addition. If you don't have problems with smaller print, then by all means purchase this copy, you can't be the price. Also the binding it very good, the book while small, lays flat, whch is a really nice in a hardcover book of this size.

Book Description

Students, professors and general readers alike have relied upon the Oxford Annotated Bible for essential scholarship and guidance to the world of the Bible for four decades. Now a new editorial board and team of contributors have completely updated this classic work. The result is a volume which maintains and extends the excellence the Annotated's users have come to expect, bringing new insights, information, and approaches to bear upon the understanding of the text of the Bible. The new edition includes a full index to all of the study material (not just to the annotations), and one that is keyed to page numbers, not to citations. And, to make certain points in the text clearer for the reader, there are approximately 40 in-text, line drawing maps and diagrams. With the best of the Annotated's traditional strengths, and the augmentation of new information and new approaches represented in current scholarship, the Third Edition will continue to serve as the reader's and student's constant resource.

3 out of 5 stars Too, too scholarly. Not for lay study!.......2007-09-12

`The New Oxford Annotated Bible' of the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) translation, with the Apocrypha, was my first, entirely uncritical choice for a study Bible when I began teaching an adult Bible Study class. I have no trouble with the translation, as it is the translation of choice for most American Lutherans, so I accept that.
What I discovered, as I discover with so many other books with the `Oxford' imprimatur, is that while the volume is sound, it is not always the best in the field. When I started looking at other study bibles, I was skeptical of the fancy multicolored sidebars, section headings, and marginalia. Now, I'm not so sure these are such a `bad' thing, even if they don't shout `scholarship'.
The `New Oxford...' certainly shouts scholarship in its copious footnotes to the way in which certain terms have been translated by the NRSV scholars. This was how I discovered that the NRSV is a `politically correct' translation in that it changes all masculine references to terms combining genders (`we' or `men and women' in place of `he' or `man'). This is annoying, as it makes it a less satisfactory translation for scholarship, but, knowing is better than not knowing.
The volume also has superb maps. For these alone the book may be worth owning, as so many other Bible Study maps are inaccurate or lacking in detail. These are combined political and topographical maps for all major periods of Biblical history, such as Canaan in the time of Abraham to Moses, Sinai during the Exodus, Israel in Canaan, and so on. My only complaint is that most maps span two pages, and since the pages are sewn into signatures, scanning or photocopying a good image of the maps is very difficult. Even better is the index to the maps. There are also black and white political maps scattered throughout the text, but these are probably far less useful. It would have been better to gather these all in one place, but that's me. I must say that there is an index to all these maps in the text, so some forgiveness is in order.
From there, things tend to fall off a bit. The volume ends with a series of essays, tables, and a short concordance. This last item seems to me to be quite a waste of space, as it takes up 63 pages, while Strong's Concordance fills over 1800 pages. I suspect Oxford left something out! In fact, my favorite test case, a search for `olive tree', as it appears, for example, in Paul's letter to the Romans, is not to be found. While Oxford has three references to `olive', Strong has 37! The essays I find are sound, but really too short for anything but a quick introduction to their material. Especially noisome is the fact that the essay authors give no bibliography attached to the end of their essays. I did find the table of parallel texts very useful, especially those covering the Old Testament. The parallels of the Synoptic gospels are familiar enough, but the multiple occurrences of, for example, the description of the fall of Jerusalem in Jeremiah and 2 Kings is useful. I did find the chronological table of rulers a useful aide de memoir, although it would have been even more useful to express these genealogically. I seem to recall that Herod the Great, the first of his dynasty, was married to some cousin from the Hasmonean line of rulers. My primary objection to the volume is the dry and uninteresting layout of the scriptures themselves. I get practically no value from the footnoted material, as there is no flag in the text to bring your eyes down to the footnotes. There is also nothing to relieve us of the tedium of verse after verse of small Times New Roman typescript. It uses the method of very subtle verse numbers, to less interfere with the flow of the text, but I'm not so sure I like that, especially when I'm trying to find a verse.
I regret that I can't compare this to another study bible, as I have just started looking at others, thereby having the scales fall from my eyes regarding the value of the Oxford. Stay tuned for more, as I find better guides. I have heard, if you can get your hands on a copy, that the Harper Collins Study Bible, edited by Wayne Meeks, is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Best Bible EVER.......2007-08-24

This is the best Bible I've ever bought. The NRSV is an excellent, easy to read, yet still scholorly translation of the Bible, and the Oxford Annotated Bible is excellent for the common reader and for the university student. Much less like a "study bible" than the 2nd edition, and much more like something I would analyze the bible with.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Edition for Study.......2007-07-29

This book is fantastic and totally informative. From the footnoted annotations filled with historical and interpretive information for all passages, to the linguistic orgin of the translations of each word, this bible is truly a key to grasping a historical version of Christianity.

Also this ecumenical is truly geared for all denominations to learn more about the holistic version of Christianity.

2 out of 5 stars Pass this up.......2007-07-09

Look at other study Bibles like the Concordia Self-Study Bible, before you get this one. It is very limited in notes and is not a study bible at all. I own one and with so many other better choices out there I cannot understand why anyone would bother with this.

2 out of 5 stars not what I expected.......2007-06-13

I was looking forward to using this new Bible for study and for prayer. I was not aware that Apocrypha was not included. No where in the ad was it mentioned that this bible did not include this element of the New Revised Standard Version. I will be able to use this Bible for some of my study program but I had to buy another Bible that included the Apocrypha to assist my prayer life.
