5 out of 5 stars Always the Best.......2007-05-07

From dining to sightseeing to sleeping, we are always happy with the tips and recommendations in Frommer's Guides.

3 out of 5 stars Adequate.......2007-04-30

This was the first guidebook I purchased when planning my trip to Washington, DC. Frommers always covers the bases and this book is no exception. Hotels, restaurants, local attractions, and more are all covered here. I also found the "Best" lists that Frommers always includes to be useful. It helps me zoom in on the best of the best experiences when time is short on a trip.

The problem I had with the book is that the level of detail for many of these entries was lacking. Hotels get a nice write up but the vast majority of those covered are above the budget for a typical traveler. The information on the tourist attractions also seems fairly comprehensive... until you compare it to the The Unofficial Guide to Washington, D.C. (Unofficial Guides) and realize how much more clear and complete that guide is. While I used this guide for the early stages of planning, it was my frustration with it that prompted me to look at other books and I ultimately stopped using this one and didn't even bring it with me on the trip. The Unofficial Guide has nearly double the pages of this book and none of it is filler.

In closing, this is not a bad guidebook for Washington, DC. Most of the basics are covered competently and I'm sure a lot of people have used it and been satisfied. Once you read the Unofficial Guide, however, you'll realize just how much useful information is left out of the Frommers Guide.

5 out of 5 stars Right to the Point.......2007-01-16

This book is full of information that you will use, not just wordy passages to fill the pages. It's a pretty quick read and in my 30 day stay in DC I used it almost daily.

This was the first time I used a Frommer's guide and I will definitely choose Frommer's again for other places when I plan to visit.

This book, accompanied by a Streetwise Map of DC, is all you will need to make the most of your time in the nation's capitol!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book On The Washington D.C. Area.......2006-12-23

FROMMER'S WASHINGTON D.C. 2007 is a great book on Washington, D.C. and its surrounding suburbs, discussing all of the historical sights, museums, and some interesting shopping, but giving very little space to the malls in the suburbs. However, even if you're not going to visit Washington in the near future, anyone who says that they're a loyal American will really get a lot out of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Seattle - Been there, done that, can't wait to go back!!!.......2007-07-27

This book answers the question, "What is there to do in Seattle?" Here are the CONTENTS:
Maps and gorgeous pictures of the city and surrounding area
1. The Best of Seattle
2. Planning Your trip to Seattle (includes info for foreign visitors as well as the traveler by car, plane, boat, etc.)
3. Suggested Itineraries for "Best of Seattle" 1, 2, and 3 day visits
4. Getting to Know Seattle
5. Where to stay (all areas, all hotels, all options, prices, and ratings)
6. Where to dine (all areas, all ethnicities, from coffee and pastries to sit down 5-star suppers, the views, the prices, the ratings, etc.)
7. Exploring Seattle (the waterfront, the market, downtown, the neighborhoods, parks, gardens, attractions for kids, organized tours, sports, etc.)
8. City strolls (features three walking tours)
9. Seattle shopping
10. Seattle After Dark (performing arts, clubs and music scene, bar scene, movies, the gay and lesbian scene, etc.)
11. Side trips from Seattle (includes the San Juan Islands and whale watching, Port Townsend, Victoria B.C., Olympic National Park, Mt.Ranier, Ferry excursions, etc. etc. etc.)

When I am planning a vacation I like to spend a good amount of time in the months before doing research so that I am well prepared, not rushed, and feel like I am seeing and doing all the most exciting things, staying in and eating at all the extraordinary places. Staying away from things that might be offensive or unsafe. We watched the travel channel shows on Seattle, and I did massive amoutns of online research on travel advisor sites. The book...well, it's like they've been there done that and you'll benefit from their experience. And you can look up travel advisories for all their suggestions before you go, plus have a handly little travel guide to constantly consult on your trip.

Of course the locals know all the best places to go, and all the great little non-touristy out-of-the-way little places to eat that feature the abundance of all the local chefies... and if you have friends or family there they will probably already have an entertainment plan for you, but I ran many of the book's suggestions past our daughter, a recent transplant to the area, to get the "locals" perspective and most of the suggested top things to see and do were also on her list. The area is so huge that unless you have a plan for everyday to group area attractions together you can spend more time in the car driving here and there than actually seeing and doing. That's where this book really shines.

5 out of 5 stars Our westward adventure.......2007-05-07

Because we have never been to Seattle, I wanted to gather as much information as I could on the "must see" attractions before our trip. This guide includes a walking tour of Pikes Place Market we intend to follow...probably would not have known about the gum wall within the market if I had not read this suggested tour. I thought it was very informative & I have referred back to it several times as I map out our itinerary. I believe our trip will be more enjoyable because of the information provided within the pages of this book. I plan to take the guide with us for unbiased reference on our adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Travel Review.......2007-03-15

Great little informative travel book. Frommer's is the best for updated information about your travel destinations. I would recommend this book to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book On Seattle And Its Environs.......2006-12-22

FROMMER'S SEATTLE 2007 is a great book about Seattle, Washington, and its surrounding suburbs. Although it is geared towards travellers from abroad, U.S. citizens can learn a great deal from this book about how to keep themselves safe in the area as well. Two things it IS lacking are a discussion of shopping malls just outside of the city and a section on radio stations, but it's still a great book, and you should buy it, regardless of whether you're actually planning to visit Seattle any time soon.

3 out of 5 stars OK for the high end traveler.......2005-09-05

We only cracked this book open for comparisons to the Moon book and found Frommers lacking. Frommers had very few suggestions if any in the smaller towns for lodging and eating. Carried info only on the expensive restaurants and lodging :(

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful Guide -- Enhanced Our Trip!.......2001-04-24

This book is a Gem! We found it highly informative, accurate, and useful on our recent trip to Seattle and Ocean Shores, Washington. The book provides the essentials without being too wordy. Interesting tidbits galore! One example of the book's usefulness was a recommendation to dine at Ocean Crest Resort in Moclips because "you won't find a more spectacular view anywhere on the Washington coast." Well, from the outside, this Resort is nothing special. In fact, were it not for the book, we never would have thought of stopping there. But are we glad. What a view! Dense trees, framing an ocean view, with a winding wooden staircase leading in erratic zig zags down to the beach below. It was worth the cost of the book! ....

5 out of 5 stars Frommer's Washington State.......2000-05-03

I found this to be an excellent user friendly, tradtional tourist guide book. However, it was published in 1998 and would be better if updated. It offers "The best of" in more than a dozen categories such as restaurants, B&Bs, hikes, etc which gives good starting points for trip planning. Phone numbers and web site address are available to obtain more detailed information on areas of interest. A map of "Washington State Driving Times " was very helful since we have found that in unfamiliar locations, driving times are sometimes easy to misfigure based only on milage.

Like other Frommer's guide books that I have used, I find this type of advice the best because it lists good choices from expensive to budget. For an average family tourist, this book is an excellent general guide.

Over the years, millions of kids have been dragged to Washington to see the grand edifices and historic monuments of our country's capital, and most of those millions have returned home without the desire to ever see a statue, senator, or Supreme anything ever again. But it doesn't have to be like that. Beth Rubin not only knows Washington D.C. backwards and forwards, she knows kids, too, and that makes for a very good guidebook. Well organized, with a variety of useful information on family hotels, restaurants, shopping, and entertainment, this is a full-service guide with a family focus. Aside from such necessities as which hotels offer cribs and rollaway beds, Rubin knows where your children can take simulated orbital flights, dine with U.S. representatives, touch a moon rock, crawl through an African termite mound replica, pet a horseshoe crab, or go swimming, biking, or in-line skating. It'll take the family Washington trip to new heights.

5 out of 5 stars Great aid for trip planning to D.C. with kids in a range of ages.......2007-09-30

This book was a tremendous asset in planning our family's first ever D.C. trip. This was our first real encounter with big city transportation and I felt really sorry for those families who were lined up at the Metro ticket machines trying to decipher them. Also some really great hints for "cheap eats"(Union Station has something for everyone & won't break the bank),beating the heat, and sight-seeing options when the "big attractions" were impossible to get to. This guide was invaluable in planning our days with children who range in age from 7 -16. Purchased Fodor's Around Washington, D.C. with Kids (Around the City with Kids)which was simple for my children to read and enjoy. Using the Fodor's book in conjunction with this Frommer's my family spent many enjoyable evenings over 4 months planning our trip.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for travelling with young kids.......2006-11-29

I found this book to be very helpful and complete. The humor and affection that the author shows for the area and kids in general was very welcome departure from the otherwise stuffy travel guides I'm used to reading. I found her insights about timing visits, local restaurants to check out, and walking tours to be very handy. Reading her guide was like getting advice from a helpful Mom. It's sold me on the Frommer Kids series, and I'm looking forward to using them on my next trip!

5 out of 5 stars Must have for travel to DC-- even without kids.......2006-07-04

I have four editions of this book and I would not consider going to DC without it. It is worth the investment to make sure that you are getting the latest and greatest information. I have NEVER had a problem with the information if the edition is current. A quick flip through the sixth and eighth editions shows how much info has been updated, plus almost every listing provides a web address (in addition to all the other contact information) so you can get more detailed information if you desire.

When we are in DC, this book stays in my backpack at all times. The maps are clear and conscise, and the authors helpful hints have saved us a lot of time. I have all the info from the washington.org and AAA and just about everything that it covered in scores of brochures and booklets is in this book. It truly is the only book you need!

3 out of 5 stars Great for things to do, not so for hotels and restaurants.......2006-02-13

This book is an excellent guide for things to do in the D.C. area with kids. We live in D.C. and were looking for new things to do, especially with our 3 year old in mind. We bought the book and learned about exciting locations and activites that we never knew about. For example the Doll and Toy Museum, Naval Observatory and Amazonia exhibit at the National Zoo.

The restaurant and dining guides though are way off, the do not include the best food (including child friendly) nor convenient, fun and affordable hotels, infact they recommend some of the worst! Of course we've gained this knowledge from living here for 6 years, still would expect better form a guidebook...for food dining and hotels I'd recommend Lonely Planet's guide to D.C. area.

Only other downer was driving to the Childrens Museum only to find it was closed until 2009. Still I have the 6th edition and the 7th edition hopefully is updated with this info.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Any Family Heading to Our Nation's Capital.......2004-04-23

If you've never been to DC with kids, you need this book. I used it primarily for its comprehensive reviews of family-friendly hotels and restaurants (of course, you should call the establishments yourself to verify that the information is up to date) smartly divided into geographical areas--downtown, Georgetown, Capital Hill, etc. Maps pinpointing sites and attractions were equally helpful.

No feedback yet from the actual owners.
I have found Frommer's to be the best in travel books.
LOVE them for where to go and all the information I need for a great visit.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for tourists.......2006-11-10

This book gave us all the info we needed to plan our trip. The maps inside the cover were very helpful. Book has a lot on where to stay and eat, but only if you have lots of money. For the budget traveler, that info was too much considering how much everything they reviewed cost. Gave lots of info on where to go and what to see. Would recommend to anyone traveling.

4 out of 5 stars Still your best bet for a DC travel guide.......2006-08-31

I rated the 2004 edition of this book at 5 stars, but this edition has slipped just a bit for containing outdated information and omissions of a few other things, so I would say it deserves a 4-and-a-half star rating.

The major thing missing is a mention of The Circulator. This is the bus that loops from Capitol Hill through the K-street corridor to Georgetown, and is $1 to ride, and runs until 10pm. It is cheaper and runs much more frequently than the blue bus that is mentioned in the guide. The Circulator started in early 2005, so it should have made it into this year's edition of the Frommers.

The guide lists a Smithsonian Museum Hotline, and when I called this month (August 2006), the number was out of service.

The Phillips Collection is listed as being free during the weekdays. Wrong. The Phillips Collection is donation-only during the weekdays, and the gal at the desk did watch us drop some money in the donation box. Not a huge deal, but the information was inaccurate. The Phillips has doubled in size since the renovations were completed, and "The Boating Party" is once again on display after its long absence in a traveling exhibition, as is my favorite, "Woman With Dog" painted by Pierre Bonnard.

In the 2004 edition, there was a restaurant that my wife and I loved named Olives. It was not in this edition, but it is still in business and was a fabulous experience when we went (as it was 2 years ago). We enjoyed Olives vastly better than La Tosca (don't order the chicken at La Tosca...blah).

Another place that should be mentioned in the guide is The Capitol City Brewing Company right near China Town (with another location on Capitol Hill). The variety of micro-brews was fantastic, the staff was very friendly (especially Benny!), and during weekdays from 4pm until 7pm, they have half-price beers and appetizers at the enormous bar section (the sesame-covered seared tuna and the Asian quesadillas were absolutely delightful). A great place to visit if you are on a budget.

Even with these minor errors and omissions, it is still a highly valuable guide.

5 out of 5 stars Frommer's Washington DC 2006 guide has it all!.......2006-03-04

Frommer's continues its tradition of excellence with the 2006 guide to D.C. Most helpful to us were the "Getting to Know Washington D.C" chapter, and the chapter on "Suggested Itineraries". The pullout map is invaluable. If you've never been to D.C., or have not toured the city, this book is a fabulous reference.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing for a travel guide.......2007-01-13

I have been living in Seattle for 5 months and I got this book to navigate around, but this was disappointing.
The book is more like a short reading about the city, rather than a travel guide. I would not be able to navigate myself around if I were traveling Seattle using this book.
I think this book is for people who read other standard travel guides such as LonelyPlanet, and want to know more.
I did buy LonelyPlanet after buying this book.

3 out of 5 stars sleepless in seattle.......2006-11-10

This is my first Frommer's travel book, I've always used Let's Go before, and the only reason I brought Frommer's is because Let's Go doesn't have a Seattle edition. I find that I still prefer Let's Go in terms of the writing style, amount of detail and organization. Let's Go organizes in terms of area, for example, if you're exploring a particular neighborhood, you can just mark a chapter and you'll find everything in that chapter, i.e. sights, dining, accomodations, nightlife, etc. On the other hand, Frommer's organizes in terms of things to do, so you need to go to a different chapter to find a restaurant, and another chapter to find a hotel. Even the maps are organized this way - there are different maps for the same area for dining, accomodations, etc. I found the constant flipping through the pages very cumbersome. Also, Frommer's maps are not as detailed and harder to follow. For instance, we were exploring the Pike Place Market area and the map says there's supposed to be a restaurant there, but it wasn't. Frommer's doesn't provide detailed instructions on how to get from one place to another. Frommer's does provide categories with a varying range of prices - from very expensive, to moderate, and affordable. However, for the budget-minded traveler, I highly recommend Let's Go.

On the other hand, if you're only going to stay in Seattle and the surrounding areas, I would still pick Frommer's out of all the other books available because the other books include the entire Northwest area and only has a small chapter on Seattle. I do like the best things-to-do or eat lists

3 out of 5 stars Fairly Good..........2006-07-18

I found this guide book to be relatively helpful in my Seattle travels. I liked the fact that it gave day trip suggestions from the Seattle area (San Juan Islands, Mount Rainier, etc.), had some nice color pictures in the front, and gave some good summary itineraries in the beginning for people with varying degrees of time to spare. I don't refer to this as religiously as some other guidebook series I have for other cities, though. I found that it was lacking in quirky things to do or restaurants to eat at and really just summarized the overwhelmingly "normal" tourist things to do. It's a good first reference especially if you don't have a lot of time to see the city, but you might want something more detailed or a little less mainstream if you're going to have a substantial amount of time to explore the city...

4 out of 5 stars frommers does it again.......2006-06-30

consistent and non-byass reviews that were easy to read. the book lacked some color, but overall, it satisfied my expectations.

    Book Description

First in War, First in Peaceeand Last in the American League. Expressions such as these characterized the legend and lore of baseball in the nation's capitol, from the pioneering Washington Nationals of 1859, to the Washington Senators, whose ignominious departure in 1971 left Washingtonians bereft of the national pastime for 34 years. This reflective book gives the complete history of the game in the D.C. area, including the story of the Homestead Grays, who won nine straight Negro League pennants from 1937-1945 and consistently outdrew the Senators.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for DC Baseball History.......2007-04-25

This book gave me a great education on the real story of the Washington Nationals/Senators and the Expansion Senators. Before reading this, I always thought baseball in DC failed because of poor teams. That is still true, but it also had a lot to do with Clark Griffith's selling off of star players; that he missed out on the chance to be the first to integrate the game (he was against integration, but mainly because he depended on the gate receipts of the Negro League teams at Griffith Stadium); and of unstable ownership in the 1960s, that apparently operated without long-term goals.

One story in this book really shocked me: Sometime in the 1920s, an elderly black man who had been a lifelong fan of the Nationals/Senators attended an Opening Day parade was spit in the face by one of the players who apparently could not tolerate this black man cheering on the players and calling them by name. The old man was so hurt, he never went to another baseball game again. Of course, he would not encourage any other blacks to go to games either. With all the talk today about the decline of African-American interest in baseball, I can't help but wonder if this incident was another seed sowed in the situation we have today.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on DC Baseball.......2007-03-26

Remember in the movie "Jerry Maguire" when Renee Zellweger says, "You had me at hello!"? Well, in his book about The Washington Nationals, Fred Frommer had me with the opening sentence to his preface where he laments that on moving to Washington from New York, the two missing items here were a baseball team and a place to get a good slice of pizza. Much like Fred, I am a transplanted New Yorker (and a lifelong Yankee fan who has adopted the Nats as well), and for my first 31 years here I had to do without a major league team (although the Orioles are within driving distance, they were not and never will be a Washington team). And, Fred's right, the pizza (and bagels) here are definitely not New York.

Fred's book is neatly compartmentalized into ten chapters. The first chapter chronicles the earliest baseball in Washington, actually going back to the era of Abe Lincoln! The second chapter of the book is incredibly upbeat as it deals with Washington's only World Championship in 1924. Frommer does a splendid job of taking you through the season. You can feel the excitement being generated here in D.C. by the Senators' unexpected success. The next chapter, called "Glory Years," deals with the best years of the Senators in the 1920's and 1930's, when they often contended and even won the pennant in 1933, only to have the Giants exact revenge in the World Series. Fred's following chapter, perhaps the best in the book, focuses on the Negro Leagues and Washington's entry therein, the Homestead Grays. There is plenty of excellent history and a great look at sociological views of the era. There are wonderful anecdotes about Buck Leonard, the amazing Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige, among others.

For members of Red Sox Nation, there is a chapter devoted solely to Ted Williams' stint as manager of Senators II. Another chapter is devoted exclusively to interviews with old-time fans who reminisce about attending games at Griffith and DC/RFK Stadiums. These phenomenal fans have wonderful stories to relate and Frommer does a great job of eliciting them. The final chapter is dedicated to the magical 2005 season of the Nationals.

My hats (both a Yankee cap and a Nationals cap) are off to Fred Frommer for coming up with a highly entertaining, educational book about baseball in Washington, DC.

5 out of 5 stars The Best DC Baseball Primer Around.......2007-01-22

Growing up in the District, hearing stories of the Senator's rich past from my 80 year old next door neighbor had to fill in for not having a team in my city. When other kids talked about how the Orioles were "our team", I'd be the lunatic ranting that the Orioles weren't DC's team, that our city had a long and storied baseball history; DC was once a baseball city.

Mr. Frommer's well written book is an easy read that truly imparts the excitement and depth of DC's baseball history, able to bring that history to life for the District's generations that grew up unknowing after the nation's capital was robbed of the nation's sport. A must for all DC baseball fans. Go Nats!

5 out of 5 stars Best Littl Nationals Book Around.......2007-01-09

This book it the best little compilation of Washington D.C. baseball history around. It is packed full of interesting facts and vignettes about Washington Baseball. It also has great illustrations and photos. A must have for every Washington Nationals baseball fan.

    5 out of 5 stars A great history of a difficult subject!.......2006-06-23

Baseball in DC is a sorry topic indeed, with as much success coming via fictitious, supernaturally affected means ("Damn Yankees") than actually on the field. This book chronicles that mostly sorry history with grace, humor, and tenderness that only a seasoned baseball writer can achieve. The chapter on how the Sens won the World Series in 1924 actually brought tears to my eyes. This is the best history of Washington baseball I have ever read. Go Nats!

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars absolutely fantastic.......2005-03-16

I knew NOTHING of DC when I learned I had to attend a conference there. I purchased this edition of the Frommer's DC guide and the little bit of money I spent on it was well worth it!

I've never had to maneuver around a city without a vehicle and I was MOST worried about learning to use mass transit in DC. This guide calmed my fears about the Metrorail which was actually one of my favorite aspects of DC! I studied up on how things work and the tips saved me a lot of headaches. For example, one tip said to stand on the right of the escalators when exiting or entering the Metro station so that commuters in a hurry will be able to run up the left side. That one tip saved me from getting in the way of those who I know would have run over me!

I feel the ratings that the guide gives attractions are right on. Too many times, authors of guidebooks don't even visit an attraction and they just copy and paste a description that comes straight from the attraction itself. I've been to too many attractions that weren't worth my time, but who billed themselves as being worthwhile and exciting to visit. The writers of this guide have actually been to all of these attractions and are honest about what to see and what to skip.

I had two days outside of the conference I attended to do some sightseeing, but on some mornings and in the evenings during the conference, I had free time as well. The Frommer's guide gave me the information I needed regarding times and days that attractions were open. Also, knowing which ones were closer to the Metro stations was helpful when I knew I'd have limited time before I had to be back.

Even though the edition I used for this trip was at least a year old, I felt it was indispensable. I know one reason my trip was so wonderful is because of this book! The tips are very helpful. The writers are knowledgable. The information is correct. The only thing I would change would be the index - it could have been more comprehensive.

I've always relied on information from visitors' bureaus and tourist information spots when visiting a new city. However, those brochures and guidebooks are always written to glorify everything. They don't critique and they don't offer tips. After using the Frommer's guidebook, I'm a firm believer in avoiding visitors' bureaus and sticking to Frommer's.
