Excellent hints.......2007-08-13
We just returned from our trip to the Quebec province and the guide was very useful and informative, not only on the sites, but also on restaurants, activities and others. The only thing it should contain and did not is information on the area's national parks and other nature areas of interest, which info we found locally from tourist info centers.
Overall very good and useful.
Terrific Reference for Travelers.......2007-04-24
We planned a trip and traveled to Montreal and Quebec. While we often rely on our GPSr to give us landmarks, places of interest, and dining spots, we found this guide was indispensable for giving more detail than we could get from the GPSr, and enabled us to make good choices for our eating and sightseeing. We also chose a splendid Hotel in Vieux Quebec that was both a bargain and a delight worth many times the price of a night.
The price of the book will be returned many times over in the quality of experiences you have while visiting Montreal and Quebec!
Good, overall guide, but lacking on dining options.......2007-02-24
This is a great guide for those who haven't yet been to Quebec City. It gives general information on the top sites, hotels and dining in the area. I would have liked to see, however, more dining options and a larger section on traveling to Quebec City with kids. Also, there is a whole vacation rental business in the city, mostly apartments, that is a great way to travel and less expensive than hotels. The guide never even mentions this option.

Customer Reviews:
Clear, uptodate and easy to use .......2006-11-03
I like the small size of this guide you can bring everywhere easily. It is really usefull to have it to choose and see everything important and to find your favorite interests, restaurants or hotels in this place efficiently by looking at the differents sections it proposes. The maps are well done...really, I have also this one for NY city and it worths its price. Enjoy.
Excellent and helpful :-).......2006-02-12
These books are always fantastic. They are choc-full of good information and it's so handy and useful. Inside, it talks about all the top 10 things in different sections. For example, the top 10 hotels, restaurants, shops etc. I also really love all the beautiful colour pages. Some guide books use black and whites etc, but these guys always make the city in question look stunning. Obviously this book is merely a small guide with only a certain amount of information - if you want a lot more depth, you have to get their full bigger books (which are also great). But for someone with a bit of knowledge already about a particular place, this is just a top up of info that comes in real handy. I highly recommend this book (especially since it is dealing with two cities instead of concentrating on only one). A good guide to two beautiful cities.
Overall good guide to accompany your trip to Montreal/Quebec.......2005-08-04
This guide book is filled with colorful pictures and list top-10 tourist spots in Montreal and Quebec, it almost list top-10 tourist spots, dining, shopping, night life etc in different sections of the cities. Overall it's an excellent guide book to accompany one's trip to Monteral/Quebec.
The only problem is after visiting some of the top-10 spots I find myself disagreeing with the choice of the author. While some interesting spots were left out of given less attention. Some information is also outdated or incorrect, such as museum opening hours.
For example, while the cross on Mount Royal has historical significance, the steel structure itself is unimpressive and I doubt whether it's worth walking half-way through Mount-Royal Park just to see the cross.
Another example is the Museum of French America in Quebec city, which houses many interesting exhibits but it wasn't even mentioned in the guide.
Apart from tourists spots, I also find myself disagreeing with some top-10 restaurants picks. For example, the Alphenaus restaurant (in downtown Montreal) recommended by the guide is located in a kind-of-run-down neighbourhood and AAA only gives it 2 diamonds. There are some good picks though, like Le Latini in Montreal.
One last glitch about this travel guide is the inclusion of some seemingly irrelevant information. While it's good to know about Celine Dion or the separatist movement, I'm not sure how useful that information is to my trip.
Summary:
The good:
Clear, concise, numbered list of tourist attractions, restaurants, etc. Also some travel tips. Most attractions lists are show on mini-map and nearest metro station, which makes the job of finding that attraction/restaurant a lot easier.
The bad:
some out-dated information, some top-10 picks questionable
The bottomline:
This is an excellent guide to accompany anyone travelling to Montreal/Quebec city
take this with you.......2004-08-18
This is a great little travel book if you are planning your first trip to Quebec. Not having any idea about what we wanted to do, this book basically planned our trip. It's also small enough to carry with you. It also has maps.

Fodor's Doesn't Disappoint.......2007-09-10
This book was perfect for a weekend in Montreal. I looked through tons and Fodor's just keeps it simple with good maps, recommendation that aren't lacking in any way, and it is well organized. We took a couple of the restaurant recommendations and I had one of the best meal ver (literally) at Toque! and would strongly recommend the mystery meal. Out of this world. This book is a sure thing though if you are debating which guide to grab for an upcoming trip. Have fun!
A must have........2007-06-13
Handy little book for site seeing and dining.
Great Guide.......2007-05-16
Fodor's guide has been very helpful on my trip to Montreal. We were very satisfied with our hotel, which we read about in Fodor. We planned our itinerary around the different areas recommended by Fodor and were able to enjoy and find them all. We also took a side trip to Oka, which was probably my favorite thing we did on this trip. Fodor's explanations of the different places, neighborhoods, and restaurants made our experience in Montreal and its vicinity meaningful and memorable. This is truly a guide of great value.

Book Description
From its festivals, to its language to its lovable quirks, its wide-open spaces, creativity and French flair, there's a lot to love about the province of Québec... and a lot to take in.
There's cosmopolitan Montréal with its legendary bagels and smoked meat, soaring churches, crackling nightlife, beloved view from atop Mont-Royal and abundant shopping. And then there's fairy tale-like Québec City where the cobblestone streets and old battlegrounds still hum with the noises of la Nouvelle France.
With a focus on Montréal and Québec City, this guidebook will provide you with suggested travel strategies and lists of must-see sights so you can get the inside scoop on where to go, stay, and eat. But you'll also find out about some other great places like the poetic and oft-painted Charlevoix, the serene Eastern Townships, the rugged Laurentians and the wind-swept Gaspé and les Îles de la Madeleine.
With photos, maps and insightful commentary, Moon Montréal and Québec City has the tools you need to create your own unique trip.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful guide.......2007-09-06
Although it's a little dated now (some of the restaurants in Montreal are now closed), I really enjoyed this guidebook. It provided good insights, history and a selective list of sights and activities. The sidebars and the suggestions for day trips were especially good.
Disappointing.......2007-08-29
I bought this handbook because the series had a terrific guide to Nova Scotia which I had obtained for an earlier trip there. That was not true of the Montreal and Quebec version. It was much less complete than the competition from Frommers in every way, from local history to places to stay and eat, and organized in a very confusing manner. Go with Frommers.
great guide.......2007-01-09
I had previously used the Moon Guide for Rome and thought I'd try their guides for our long weekend to Montreal and Quebec city. This Moon Montreal and Quebec City guide was fabulous and helped me discover places we would never have seen on our short little visit. I also purchased the Moon Metro Guide as it is a convenient way to carry a map when you're out and about without having a giant map that shouts 'tourist'!

Customer Reviews:
Not very Helpful.......2002-10-30
I was somewhat disappointed as only about one thrird of this little book is Information about trains. The other part is a general travelguide.
Only VIA Rail services and the Rocky Mountainer are covered. Trains like the Polar Bear Express aren't even mentioned.
Then I had to find that some information is out of date (VIA-Rail DOES serve Quebec City).
If you want a Canada travel guide rather buy a Lonely Planet and if you want additional information about rail travel you can find it on the internet.
Not very useful.......2002-10-30
I was somewhat disappointed with this book. Only one third of it is actual information about train-travel. Most of it is a general travelguide with informations about the cities etc.
The train information covers only VIA-Rail services, doesn't even mention trains like the Polar Bear Express.
Then I found that some of the information about trains was even out of date (Quebec City IS served by VIA Rail).
If you want a Canada travel guide with detailed information about the country rather buy the Lonely Planet. If you want more info on trains in Canada I'd suggest looking on for websites.
THE Canadian rail book!!.......2001-07-16
This is THE ultimate canadian rail travel book. I would even recommend this book for those driving through Canada. The author gives advise (very detailed) on where to eat, sleep, sight-see, and so on. I urge everyone to find this book at your local bookstore and thumb through it. Then buy it here. At the end of the book it even guides you along the train journey by listing the significant sights along the way (such as....at Mile marker 26 towards the south, you'll see the cemetary containing 145 victims of the Titanic). Best of all, it displays all of the VIA Rail timetables and how many calendar days each leg of the trip takes. This is especially useful for those on the CANRAIL pass package. YOu can literaly plan your entire itinerary from this single book. The size allows you to easily stow it in a small camera bag or purse. The PERFECT Canadian travel book.
This book is even better than I thought.......2000-06-03
Ok, I'm back. This is my second review of the book, however this time it's based on my real experience traveling with VIA from coast to coast (Halifax - Vancouver) and using this book on the road (oooppss...rail). While preparing my itinerary I used this book as a main source of information when deciding how much time I'll spend in each city and where I'll be staying. VIA web site is of course the place to pickup the latest timetables, calculate the price of the tickets, and make a reservations... (I found timetables at the end of the book still useful on the board of the train when I needed to quickly find out the distance to the next station).
I put three books in my backpack, two travel guides from NELLES (guides to Atlantic and Pacific provinces) and this one. The guides from NELLES are good with lots of facts about the country and with nice photos, however I found "Trans-Canada Rail Guide" far more suitable for people traveling across Canada by train. Also the book is as valuable on board of the train as well in the downtown of the city. I rent the book to several fellow travelers in coach class and each one of them told me how great it is.
The organization of the book is simple but efficient, for example in PART 4 City Guides and plans you can find for all mayor cities short descriptions of the following: History, Arriving in...(by air, by train), Local Transport, Orientation and Services, Where to stay, Where to eat, What to see, Moving on (by air, by train). If you are real rail enthusiast you'll have fun reading PART 5 Route Guide and Maps with description of small stations and places marked with mile markers so you can be "smarter" then others guessing what it is or where you are. Some prices mentioned in the book are the same even today but in general are higher. My average expense for the mid-range hotel or B&B was 55 CAD per night (including tax), entrance fees for museums and other events are in general higher, anything from 10 to 50% higher, food 10-20%, buses and taxis 10-20% , train tickets 10-20% (the cost of my Canrail Pass was 408 CAD including tax). If you need any additional tips or information about the trip you can send me a message to my account on Yahoo (see member page). Today I found out that second edition of this book is published so check it out!
Read this book before you go!.......2000-03-19
This book helped me prepare itinerary for my one-month journey from Halifax to Vancouver that I'm planning to take in May 2000. I checked prices and some telephone numbers mentioned in the book with those I found on different web sites and despite the fact that the book is four years old it's still useful and accurate. There is everything you need to prepare for such journey: routes and costs, facts about country, practical advices (transport, festivals, food, time, hotels,...), history about Trans-Canada railway, mayor city guides and plans and least but not last route guide and maps with short description about small towns along the routes.

A great tour of the covered waterways along with history.......2007-07-27
A previous review noted they had an outdated version. This is the new 2006 version that I just received. Great read and a must book to keep on board if you are cruising any of these waterways.
Contains Restaurants, Marinas, Gas, Food Supplies Side trips and Safe bays to Anchor along the way etc.
Pictures and history of each town and port you will be approaching. Shipped free and makes a great gift for any boater who be might traveling to the covered regions. Nice coffee table book if you live in the regions too!
A fairly comprehensive guide.......2007-05-13
I bought this mostly for Lake Champlain, but it seems to be a fairly comprehensive guide to boaters along the Hudson River, through Lake Champlain and on up to the St. Lawrence River. It offers information on the local marina's and sightseeing. I wish the maps had been a little more comprehensive, but in general I think I will find alot of use for the book.
Excellent Guide.......2005-02-28
We purchased this book in anticipation of a Lake Champlain cruise this summer (2005). Excellent description of anchorages, which is exactly what we were looking for. Many photos, too bad they are all B&W.
The only thing I would like to see is a new edition, the current one is 4 years old, and as such, I would expect some of the marina information to be out of date.
