Great overall guide for first-time visitors!.......2007-07-08
We went to London in January 2007. We bought a few London travel-guide-type books but THIS book was the one we kept turning to during our trip. It was easy to use and comprehensive. The maps of the different parts of the city were an excellent tool. We had never been to London before and with this book we felt a little more like we knew what we were doing! I highly recommend this book!
Map seems incomplete . . . . .......2007-05-29
I was really hoping to use the map included in this book during my stay in London. Unfortunately, the area I was staying (near the Marble Arch) was not included in the map, and therefore, was not as useful as I had hoped.

We went to London in January 2007. I was so glad we bought this book, as we constantly referred to the maps (in the book and the tear-out pocket map). The lists and descriptions of things to do around London were priceless, as were the suggestions. I relied on the maps of the different parts of the city to find our way around to the lesser known places or when we got a little off course. This was my 3rd time visiting London, so I wanted to see a few things that were off the beaten path and not the typical sites to see. The maps and book helped guide us through all the different parts of the city.
The only thing I wish it had were more hotel reviews and restaurant reviews. Fortunately, with the internet, researching those topics is fairly easy. We had free internet access in the hotel we stayed at in Westminster (the City Inn Westminster, I think it was).
Awesome, a must have..........2007-03-09
This book is very comprehensive, definately a "Must Have" for your First (or any) trip to London. We just got back and could not have seen everything we wanted to, without it. The Suggested Itineraries section is AWESOME. it gives you a 1, 2 or 3 day turn by turn way to walk through the city to make ensure you get to see everything. You can find lots of this information on Frommer's website too for free, but having the book with you is the only way to go.
Great Planning Book.......2006-08-30
This book showed me a great view of what to do and see in London. I have been slowly planning my trip for awhile and this book is the cornerstone to that planning. The only thing I wish though was that they showed more pictures of the things in the book.

Frommers Guide To Rome is a Must Have.......2005-08-24
I found the 36 pages of restaurant review invaluable, especially with the pricing guides and hours of opening and if booking in advance was necessary. The self-walk tours was also very helpful as we did not want to go on large guided tours. The section at the start on what you must and must not bring, what precautions to take, was also invaluable. I was pleased to get such a large map to do my planning, but disappointed that none of the major sights was displayed boldly so that I could see how to link up a certain few within a given day. Nor were any of the recommended restaurants marked on the map. It was a book essential to planning and plotting my trip, but the map was too big to bring and unfold in the middle of a busy street. I thought the shopping section very disappointing. It was all where to avoid, or make do with people-watching, on the grounds of extremely expensive, but no tips on where else one should try - except the early morning markets. It would have benefitted from more photos, even small black and white ones, as many of the recommended sights are not signposted in Rome, or else only in Italian. However, it was an absolute must have and gave me many insights and opportunities that I would not have found in other books claiming to be as good. I know that the next city I vist, whatever it may be, I will immediately get the Frommer's guide (to that city) without even looking for others. Finally, a few common phrases in Italian would have helped.

Not the book to use.......2005-04-01
I bought this book about two weeks before I visited Rome and used it and its associated map as my guide through Rome over Easter weekend. I found the book and the map pretty difficult to use. Many major attractions in the book are not noted on the map, and many street names are missing from the map. It took me an inordinate amount of time just to figure out where the catacombs really were. Further, there are beautiful descriptions of things to see, but no pictures. That's a problem if you want to get an idea of what something looks like before you decide to invest the time in your itinerary to go see it. Further, in a city that has very few signs describing its buildings and sites (or the signs are in Italian only) you really need a book with pictures just to identify what you are looking at at times. This book is not good at that. The itineraries were sometimes confusing and conflicting. There is a section on an itinerary if you have one day which takes you through ancient Rome, then in a different section of the book the ancient Rome itinerary starts at a different location. If you really are new to a city, you probably want to rely on the book to suggest a good itinerary, not offer confusing and conflicting options. The book tended to jump around a lot. What I mean is, within a paragraph it would describe nice things to see which were nowhere near each other in the city. Overall, I was pretty frustrated with this book. Of the hundreds of tourists carrying guide books around the city that weekend, I didn't notice anyone with this book. It just seems you have to invest too much time trying to figure out the best use of your time (I spent several hours reading the book in preparation for the trip.) I think the biggest shortcoming is the lack of pictures.
Reliable.......2005-03-18
Very strong on hotel reviews (25 pages), restaurant reviews (36 pages), plus the Frommer Best Bets for both categories. Maybe a little weak on the description of the sightseeing places of interest, being perhaps too brief sometimes, but the walking tours are very good, the shopping lists and traveler's facts are very solid and reliable.
Very good pre trip book for hotel listings and walking tour ideas, not necessarily the book to carry with you in the street.
Not for independent travellers.......2005-02-15
I have just returned from my second trip to Rome, and I used this book as my primary travel guide. I have also used this series in other cities. Compared to other series, the Frommer's guides stand out in that they focus more on hotel and restaurant recommendations than on historical or practical information.
With that in mind, the restaurant options in this edition seemed to be limited only to locations off major squares or else near the train station, offering very little off the beaten track or for budget travellers.
The information provided for the attractions, such as the museums and ruins, etc. was accurate, although very basic: hours and prices but little historical information. Sometimes the guide would direct one's attention to a particular column or square, but neglect to explain its significance. The recommended restaurants were good, but there was more missing than was included. A guide claiming to offer information on "what's worth your time and what's not" did very little to justify the exclusions... and the fact that several of the recommended restaurants and attractions didn't appear on any of the included maps doesn't support the recommendation at all!
Overall, the maps need to be more complete, to consistently reflect the textual content of the book. Furthermore, it seems suspicious for a guide with so very few included recommendations to have some that were across the street from each other, suggesting very lazy rather than comprehensive coverage of what the city has to offer. Moreover, the photographs on the cover were stock photographs, having nothing to do with any actual experiences of the writers, whose recent actual trip to Rome can only be the object of assumption.
Also, some travellers may find it difficult to trust a guide which includes advertisements for web-based hotel finding agencies.
I would recommend this book for anyone with more money than taste, or who is more interested in getting his or her passport stamped than in becoming educated about Rome, then or now. Just so you know: There's plenty of shopping on Via Corso.

Frommer's
These are time tested guides that pride themselves on being updated annually. Although I think the guides below provide information that is in more depth or more concise (depending on what the guide is known for), if your main concern is that the guide has very little old or outdated information, then this would be a good guide for you.
Rick Steves' books are not recommended. They may be an interesting read but their helpfulness is very poor. They don't do well on updates, transportation details, or anything but the first-time-tourist routine and even that is somewhat superficial on anything but the mega-major sites.
Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
SeeIt! is a concise guide that extracts the most popular items from the Gold Guide
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide
MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for pubs, hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the underground and the double decker buses. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the city centre. When you get to be an old London hand, remember that the classic Londoners guide will always be an A to Z (zed) map and guide. If you want to go a bit beyond the central core of the city (perhaps to Windsor, Hampton, or further away) you really need the proper AtoZ to be able to find exact routes and streets.
Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!
Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.
Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.
Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)
Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.
Frommer's England 2005.......2005-07-09
Not bad, although I feel that I know England better than the book having lived there most of my life. More research needs to be done on the country outside of the major cities. Tourists would understand the English people and culture more if they ventured into the hinterland, and avoided the tourist areas. Rent a car, grab a map and explore. Try staying at cheap inns. Go to the nearest pub and talk to the locals. They don't bite.
Darwin Porter & Danforth Prince, have done their homework.......2003-02-25
I took two country guides with me to England: Fodor's and Frommer's (see my review on Fodor's). Frommer's is my first choice for England, and here is why. The authors, Darwin Porter & Danforth Prince, have done their homework and have given visitors to England a very good guide. Their succinct section "The Best of England" points out, in 16 subject areas (The Best Cathedrals, Best Gardens, Best Pubs etc.), important areas that every tourist should be aware of.
Frommer's very informative 60 page section "Planning Your Trip to England" is a quick and important read. The guide's strongest section is `London', top rate and excellent. Porter & Prince are also the author's of the recommended guide: "Frommer's London 2003". The `London' section in this book has been taken from that guide.
Frommer's publications tend to be for the more affluent travelers but they do offer more help for those hoping to find "inexpensive" lodging (less than $100 a night) in England. Their "Very Expensive" range is unusually $400-$1000 per night, sometimes more. However, all of their recommendations are reliable and their description is very good.
Unlike, Fodor's, they make life a bit easier by giving you the actual cost of accommodations and restaurant in both British pounds and dollars. Almost all of the hotels have website listing and seeing your accommodations in color via the web is a major help.
However, this is not true for the restaurant listings, even though now many of the top restaurants have their own websites with vivid photos and menus -- I found no addresses listed.
A guide book worth its salt has to guide you with quality maps. The few maps that Frommer's uses are graphically laid-out with restaurants and accommodations numerically located on each map. However, this guide cries out for MORE MAPS. This is a very weak area in this guide that could be easily remedied. Also, but not a significant deterrent, Frommer's only has nine pages set aside to introduce you to 2000+ years of English history.
Do note that Fodor's includes Scotland and Wales, whereas this book, Frommer's England 2003, is strictly England. So, if you want one guide to take with you to see `England' then this is the guide to get. It is reliable, informative and very well laid out. Strongly Recommended.

Of all the travel books I purchased for my first trip to England, the Frommer's edition is the one I used and kept after my trip. It is comprehensive, detailed, and gives good advice. It had all the attractions I wanted to visit and more. They also have a great website as a reference tool.

Back in 1969, my husband and I traveled together to England for our honeymoon using our trusty copy of Frommer's England, finding it the most reliable and accurate on the market. In 2002, my son and his wife accompanied us on our most recent trip, bringing along their young son, thus marking three generations of users of this fact- and fun-filled guide to the very best that England has to offer--all at an affordable price.
We are Anglophiles, and we feel that we grew up with this guide. Except for a few misses, we've traveled to England almost every year to renew our friendships with the many people we've met through this intensely personal and extremely practical guidebook.
What we've always liked about Frommer's England is its ability to cut through the touristic hype and to connect its readers immediately to the heart and soul of England, recommending the best of its people and its most intriguing places. We are not a wealthy family; vacation hours are precious to us, and not to be wasted.
With Frommer's England, you get the feeling that the authors have been there long before you, discarding that which is of little use, and ferreting out the charm and appeal of this ever-fascinating and frequently changing place.
Although Darwin Porter and Danforth Prince keep changing and revising the guide, we admire how they keep recommending certain very special places, particularly those oases to which we keep returning.
Each year, the guide brings plenty of new things to see and do, but it also respects English tradition and knows that you're not touring the countryside for cutting-edge venues, although there's quite a bit of that as well. It follows the premise that you're in England to see where the lovely villages, the old stone manors, the country lanes, the old-fashioned tearooms, and the charming country houses lie. And throughout, there are accurate and very practical descriptions of the kinds of places that offer comfortable lodgings and good food in a wide array of price brackets.
Within two or three more years, we will have explored every part of this wonderful country, using Frommer's England as our trusty compass. My husband and I have agreed that once we have completed this self-imposed "assignment," we'll start all over again, following the same trail originally blazed by us in 1969. With us, we'll carry Frommer's England, not just as a guidebook, but as a trusted friend who has never led us astray.

Maps need A LOT of work.......2005-01-09
Since I've been to Paris several times, I primarily bought this book to get updates on the restaurants and hotels around town. What we noticed is that the Frommer maps for these are HIGHLY inaccurate. In one case, we walked a half-hour to where a restaurant should be, based on the map, only to find out that it was actually over a mile away (and less than three blocks from where we'd started)!!!
I'd highly suggest a different guide if this is what you'd be using it for.

Frommer's
These are time tested guides that pride themselves on being updated annually. Although I think the guides below provide information that is in more depth or more concise (depending on what the guide is known for), if your main concern is that the guide has very little old or outdated information, then this would be a good guide for you.
Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.
Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.
Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
SeeIt! is a concise guide that extracts the most popular items from the Gold Guide
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide
MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the Metro. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the center of the city.
Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!
Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.
Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)

This guide offered everything I needed for my trip, from exact prices on everything, colorful maps, and exciting coverage on everything going on in the country. It also covered all the historical, artistic, and cultural treasures in France. With ratings and reviews, I was able to choose a hotel and restaurants with ease. This book is all you'll need to get around in France!

O.K. Travel Guide.......2000-06-30
I've used travel guides from "Fodor's" (Spain), one of those Cheap Travel guide (I can't remember the name, something like London on a Budget?) (London), and "Eyewitnes" (Rome), and have found this title about average. I actually like ALL the others better, with Eyewtiness being my favorite. It had lots of color pictures and iteneraries of places to see. I'm using the Frommer's guide presently to plan a trip I have yet to go on. There are a good variety of places to stay, and restaurants for different price ranges. Also included are smaller hotels (with character). It has a list of helpful www sites which is very nice, and a list of phrases (food phrases will help a lot, as i don't eat liver). I was disappointed that it did not tell me the season, teams, or contacts for the soccer season, to see a game. It simply states what stadium teams play at, and the phone number for the stadium, which isn't very helpful. Overall, this is an average book.

My husband & I found this book very overwelming as it covered all of Italy. We had a hard time deciding what to do & where to go. I would suggest picking regions of Italy you would like to visit & purchase books specifically tailored to those regions.

Allow me to differ from what some of the negative postings stated, saying that the authors have never been in Italy for the last 10 years. How can it be then that the information given are in euros??? I find Frommer's Italy guide really useful, even if the descriptions of the monuments are often really scanty, but if you are interested in digging into the history of a city, then get the Blue Guides. Frommer's give the tourist that wants to visit Italy, the essential but precious info on how to get from one city to another, what to see, what to do, where to sleep, where to eat in the most visited places in Italy. ALL IN ONE BOOK. I LOVE my Frommer's copy!

Just click on the names of the writers listed above. It's mindboggling to see the other books they write. Frommers Germany 2004, Frommers Spain 2004, Frommers France 2004, Frommers Bermuda 2004, Frommers Bahamas 2004 ... and a lot more. I'd love to have their frequent flyer miles! I'd also buy a book by them about how to pack or how to get around the airports of the world. But there's no way I'd use one of these travel guides. I looked at this book but didn't buy it before making a two-week trip to Italy. When I got back, I looked at it again the next time I was in a bookstore. All I can say is, I didn't regret my choice. It's a big world out there. If you want to take a trip to Italy (or Spain or France or Bermuda), you can end up having a great time or a lousy time depending on what kind of information you have. These guys are stretched too thin. The Italy book, at least, is full of tourist traps and stereotypes.

I have had mixed results with Frommer's books. I like their maps and guides to attractions... BUT... The hotels they recommend in the lower end category often fall short. I especially did not like their recommendations for Rome.
The book has a great layout but the hotels need to be rechecked. I would make sure to balance this book with another guide like Karen Brown's or Fodor's... I make sure any hotel I stay in has a good rating in at least two sources....
