3 out of 5 stars Not horrible, but get the island-specific version instead.......2006-08-08

This book was all right. The intro general-info pages are really detailed (info for traveling with kids, international visitors, senior travelers, transportation options, etc.). However, there are scant few photos -- just a couple of pages' worth stuck in the middle, and they're more landscape-oriented than tourism-oriented, so they really aren't relevant to a guidebook.

There's some good information in there, but if you know what island you're going to already, then get a book about that particular island; otherwise you have to wade through a bunch of stuff that isn't relevant to your trip. For instance, I found the Hidden Maui guidebook to be much more helpful for the trip we'll be taking.

3 out of 5 stars Frequently generic, omits any mass transit information for Oahu.......2005-09-21

I recently checked out this book (among others) from the local library prior to a trip to Oahu. For my trip, I was disappointed by this book, and found this to be one of the less-useful ones.

First, this book was largely useless because the author omitted almost any information about accessing different tourist sites through Hawaii's tourist-packed mass transit system, The Bus. Most tourists I met relied on mass transit and tour buses. What good is a guidebook if you don't know how (or whether) you can get to the things the author mentions?

Secondly, the author frequently lacks discernment and context in his suggestions. For example, the Waikiki Shopping Plaza is listed as offering "about a dozen [budget] ethnic and American restaurants", without context. When I visited, I discovered the usual set of food court fry pits that could be found in any American shopping mall. Why would anyone interested in "Hidden Hawaii" be interested in these?

Needless to say, I rapidly tossed this book in my hotel room, and carried around the Rough Guide around. Thud.

This is a great resource for reviews. If you don't have good pointers here you can get robbed - there are a lot of high-priced but only so-so places on Maui. I live here, so I've seen em all! (hey maybe I should write one of these books!)

I found Mr. McMahon's suggestions excellent. Especially when using the guide for our "Road to Hana" trip. There are Audio cassettes available all over the Island to guide your course along the way, but we found this book much more enlighntening. We had several tour books and local guide books and ended up only using "Adventuring" for our entire stay!!

3 out of 5 stars Not easy to use.......2007-08-01

I bought this book to help me get around Maui, and was disappointed in the writing of the book. I found it difficult to read and extrapilate data from. I borrowed another Maui guide from a friend which was much easier to use, I just can't remember who wrote it right now.
I found the free brochures available at the airport and hotels easier to use and more comprehensive.

3 out of 5 stars Book Helpful - Map almost USELESS!.......2006-10-23

I found most of the info helpful, but felt the section on luaus should have at least suggested two others, instead of just the Old Lahaina Luau, which I feel has become too much of a production, instead of a beautiful feast to share! I have been to Maui 6 times, and everytime have found several new & surprising sights, sounds, meals, & wonderful, helpful people. The map should have more detailed street info, especially around Kihei & Lahaina. Might help prevent accidents. I found the Paradise Family Guide on Maui & Lanai by Dona Early & Christie Stilson much more informative and realistic, especially re: to $$ and cents!

1 out of 5 stars AVOID - dishonest ratings and cheap content.......2006-10-18

Frommer's Maui rates the tired, moldy, tacky Noelani this way: "Everything is first class, from the furnishings to the oceanfront location." Nothing could be further from the truth, and we booked in there for a week based on this blatantly dishonest description!

The fold out map is useless, lacking any detail whatsoever, a real con job.

"Maui Revealed" completely blows Frommer into the weeds, but what's most annoying is that trusting Frommer could ruin your vacation! Makes you wonder if Frommer is on the take?

4 out of 5 stars Great, just lacking a reality check.......2005-10-23

I enjoyed the throughness of this book and thought overall the author did a good job guiding us on our trip through Maui. However, there are some important things to mention. There are obvious things that once you get there you find out the hard way that should be included, such as what roads not to take and why. Also, in her take over the Road to Hana she suggests to stay and come back late at night and miss the traffic. Road to Hana is crazy to drive during the day and I would not be able to sleep at night if I recommended a reader to drive back after dark on those crazy and winding roads. It is pretty much suicide during the day, I can't imagine what level it goes to when you reach dusk. Her restaurant recommendations that we tried out were great. I just wish there was a little more of a reality check and a little more of an explanation of dangerous terrain. Her activity recommendations seemed okay as well as the booking agencies. However, we found that depending on what time of year you go, most of the activities are not sold out and you could book them when you got there when you had a better idea of what you wanted to do and try to complete.

5 out of 5 stars Okay, but Maui Revealed better.......2005-07-28

This book has all the information you might need, but no color photo's and lacks the personality of Maui Revealed. IT isnt bad, but the other book is just better.

      Product Description

This is positively, unequivocally the best travel guide to the Hawaiian islands of Maui, Molokai and Lanai yet written and published: the only guidebook you'll ever need for these islands. It explores every corner of each of these islands, remote and well-trodden, well known sights and hidden treasures alike - from the plush resorts of Kapalua, Kaanapali and Wailea to the quaint, colorful towns of Makawao and Paia; from the lush, picturesque "Road to Hana" to the 10,023-foot rooftop of Maui, Mt Haleakala; from the eerie "Garden of the Gods" on the island of Lanai to the sheer cliffs of Kalaupapa on Molokai. And, yes, all the golden beaches of the Kihei-Makena coast and the tourist haunts of historic Lahaina are there, too, as well as Kaupo and other little nuggets along the gravel roads. The book also has 17 superb, easy-to-follow maps, over 600 practical information listings for accommodations, restaurants, events, tours, recreation, beaches, hiking trails, golf courses and general tourist information, and hundreds of web addresses. Also included are a glossary of Hawaiian words and illustrationss of Hawaiian flowers and fish. And all this in a handy, easy-to-carry volume.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and remarkably easy to use.......2007-06-27

A comprehensive yet remarkably easy to use guide to the island of Maui. It had all the information a visitor could have asked for - good historical and cultural background, good maps, good descriptions of all the places of interest on the island, extensive listings of hotels, restaurants, tours and activities and events on the island, and comprehensive sections on beaches and hiking. The directions to all the places we visited were accurate, and all the information we used was current. You couldn't really ask for any more in a guidebook. In fact, of all the guidebooks out there, if I had to pick only one guide to Maui to take along, this would be it.

5 out of 5 stars "Great Value!" .......2007-05-11

My family and I just took a vacation to Maui, and of all the things we
bought, this was by far our best investment. Not only was this
guidebook packed with good, useful information on everything on the
island, but its layout and organization and all the interconnected
icons made it extremely user-friendly. We didn't have to spend our
vacation time trying to find the information in the book, because it
was all right there, like hitting the right key. Great value. It went
with us wherever we went, and we'll definitely be passing it along to
      friends heading to Maui.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Maui Guide Book.......2004-06-26

This book contains a plethora of information about Hawaii. It has a break down of each part of the Island, activities to go do, and even lists shop names for making reservations or locating once you get to the island. My wife and I have found this book to be very helpful in our planning.

      5 out of 5 stars 15 Years, 3 Editions, Never Missed A Beat.......2003-12-29

My wife and I have used the Moon: Maui book over three different editions from 1985 until relocating permanently in '99. One copy has been to the island three times, lent to friends. There is no part of the island left uncovered, and authors provide good insight on how to be pleasant guest and not get yourself into unpleasant situations.

This is quite unlike "Maui Revealed", which is quickly becoming "Maui Reviled" for locals. This perception is driven by a considerable increase in trespassing on private property to and bodily waste at spots that used to be local favorites, caused in large part by masses of visitors cluching M.R.

Stick with the Moon: Maui book, and you'll avoid a lot of unnecessary stink eye.

5 out of 5 stars Will Make Your Trip Soo Much More Enjoyable.......2002-10-13

You're spending 1,000-2,000 bucks to go to Maui -- go ahead and spend 20 bucks to have your own in-depth personal tourguide.

This handbook helped make for one of the best vacations of my life. The "insider" information is absolutely indispensible. For instance, there are many, many beaches on Maui, but there are many, many different kinds of beaches. Some with murky water. Some with huge waves. Some not navigable unless you swim beyond volcanic rocks. But there are one or two absolutely perfect beachs. And the Moon Handbook explains it. My girlfriend and I found the beach in front of the Sheraton at Ka'anapali to be the best all-aorund beach. We waded out into the calm waters and swam with sea turtles, right there in front of the Sheraton. This handbook explains, though the "little" details like, parking is difficult near the Sheraton so where to park, what the rates are, even shortcuts between buildings and such. This kind of info is just completely impossible to get anywhere else.

There are discussions of the personalities of various snorkle tour boat crews -- from adventurous, to laid-back. Some snorkle boats provide lunch, others don't. All this info is in the Moon Handbook.

We checked out Haleakala Mountain and Red Hill. With the handbook, we found how to get to Iao Needle. We found which Luau Party was the best for us, etc. Which restaurants to go to. Where to shop in Lahaina. The Sugar Cane Train for an easy-going afternoon. A drive out by the blow-holes on the NW end of the island.

I highly recommend this book before going to Maui. If you don't feel like shelling out 20 bucks, another option is always looking into your local library. Most good public libraries carry Moon Handbooks and they're absolutely free. A must before traveling to Maui, the Valley Island! (the 6th edition also includes info on the islands of Lana'i across the Auau Channel and Moloka'i)

      Happy vacationing!

      Stacey

      5 out of 5 stars A Real Guidebook.......2001-12-04

This book is written for intelligent and inquisitive tourists who want to really understand what Mauai is all about. It outshines Mauai Revealed by 100%. I found myself using it every day as it offered a far more indepth look at places not found in any other tourist publication. If flash and hype are not your style, buy this book. Good index, well written, excellent maps. It had plenty of things to do to keep me amazed every day of my two week vacation.

4 out of 5 stars Our Number Two Maui Guide.......2001-01-28

Until Andrew Doughty's "Maui Revealed" was released, this Moon handbook was the best you could get. We used it on our first trip to Maui. Like other Moon Handbooks, it is rich in history and background info, but the practical detail can't compare to "Maui Revealed." We now use this Moon Handbook mainly as a supplement for historical background -- still useful but not our first source. (Most other Maui guides are superficial rubbish.)
