Product Description
The guide described by The New York Times as 'indispensable', revised and updated for 2006, fills a vital niche for expatriates and Cairenes alike who need a helping hand to organize and enjoy the challenges of a sojourn in Cairo. The basics of daily life: finding a flat, transporting personal goods, investigating school options for children, navigating Egypt's famous bureaucracy, and the intricacies of feeding and clothing oneself and one's family from the local market are all detailed here. Advice gathered from a wide range of Cairo insiders, both native and foreign, gives the reader a cornucopia of current facts on prices, neighborhoods, product availability, work and business opportunities, and the dizzying range of cultural and leisure pursuits that Cairo is famous for. The format of this edition addresses the needs of independently minded tourists as well as residents by the inclusion of: an A to Z directory of goods, services, and interests subdivided by neighborhood; a language section on the basics of Cairene Arabic; and details on shopping and sightseeing from a resident s perspective. 'Cairo: The Practical Guide', now in its fifteenth edition, is the key to deciphering the complexities of living, working, and enjoying life in one of the world's most exciting and dauntingly complex mega-cities.
Customer Reviews:
"indespensable"?????.......2007-01-21
this book may be indispensable for expatriots or foreign workers living in cairo but is not valuable for tourism purposes. a general travel guide will provide much more vital info for the short term visitor.
All the Nuts & Bolts!.......2006-11-03
If you're a tourist, this book may not be for you. HOWEVER, if you will be in Cairo for any time, for any reason, you will need this book! It is the best compilation of grassroots information - it covers things not covered by the usual travel guides. I just wish it had some city maps in it!
Invaluable Resource if You're Moving to Egypt.......2003-08-18
I was offered a job in Egypt in 2000 and purchased the 2000 version of "Cairo: The Practical Guide." It was, as the title said, full of practical information about living in Cairo. It was a great resource as I prepared to relocate and I referred back to it many times over my two years there. It had everything from the skinny on the different parts of town to how to deal with tipping and lots in between. This book has the sort of stuff about everyday life that you won't find in tourist guide books. The accompanying book of maps (sold separately) was also very useful.
Moving to Cairo? This is a must-read.......2000-03-31
This book is not your average "here's-how-to-get-to-pyramids" guide book to Egypt, nor is it intended to be. This is a book specifically for individuals and families moving to Cairo for an extended period who have not spent time in Middle Eastern, African or other second-tier countries whose citizenry has a different "walterschaaung" or worldview. Listing this guidebook in the travel guide section is wide of the mark; this is a survival guide for ex-patriots to one of the most historic and culturally unsual (from a Western perspective) place on the planet. Thousands of survival tips are given, such as which kinds of cheeses to select, where to find and what to pay a housekeeper, where to find fresh meat, which mall has a Baskins-Robbins, which neighborhood would best suit the new arrival, and a pretty good chapter on survival Arabic. The writing style, like this guide, is not sugar-coated but directly sparse, defoliated and easy to read and remember. I would pack this book along with several other guidebooks if you are planning an extended (more than a few days) stay in Cairo. While world-romping tourists could probably live without this guide, the expat would find it indispensible. Chances are, though, a new guide book edition (the 10th) is already headed toward the American University in Cairo Press.
This revision is awful.......1999-09-12
The previous edition of this book, edited by Cassandra Vivian was far superior to this one. This edition is written for a single audience-wealthy married with children embassy types-and ignores the wide variety of other foreigners who wind up in Cairo. It is highly idiosyncratic in its views and leaves out whole areas of information that were covered in the previous edition. My old edition fell apart and I threw it away thinking the new edition would replace it, and now I am kicking myself for doing so.

Book Description
Cairo's Islamic monuments are part of an uninterrupted tradition that spans over a thousand years of building activity. No other Islamic city can equal Cairo's spectacular heritage, nor trace its historical and architectural development with such clarity. The discovery of this historic core, first visually by nineteenth-century western artists then intellectually by twentieth-century Islamic art specialists, now - at the turn of the millennium - awaits the delight of the general visitor.
This new edition of a popular and handy guide continues to walk the visitor around two hundred of the city's most interesting Islamic monuments. It also keeps pace with recent developments with updated and revised material.

Meticulous yet concise, an amazing guide book.......2007-01-23
Caroline Williams has set the standard for all future books dealing with Cairo's Islamic heritage. Each chapter covers a specific area in medieval Cairo and starts with a list of the structures to be discussed. The buildings are ranked according to quality - a feature that tourists with limited time will find invaluable. The book reads easily and in addition to describing the architectural features of the mosques, palaces and madrasas goes on to give a brief history of each monument's builder. Detailed and accurate maps are given at the end of the book. An introductory chapter describing the features of Islamic architecture in general is included. However, if you're looking for a book of photographs this is not it.

And all this information is packed into a slim booklet of 56 pages - handy enough to take anywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Well drawn, but lacking in detail.......2007-09-05
This probably is the clearest map you can get for Cairo, and it is useful in that major roads are listed in an index so you can find them in the book. The main drawback is that a majority of the smaller streets in older parts of Cairo are not labeled, so this book is not very helpful for navigating Islamic Cairo, for example.
Book Description
Here, the author of the two Her-Bak novels provides specific tools that instruct in the comprehension and application of those teachings, and help us recognize that it is by the path of silence and meditation that we are guided to the intelligence of the heart, which is our key to self-mastery and our connection to higher consciousness.

Incredible "20 Stars".......2007-02-03
One of the most spiritually profound books I've ever read. I am so impressed by her husband's works but even more so, with her. This book should be studied by all spiritual students.
Easy to read, a very good book for spiritual self discovery.......1999-01-14
The Opening of the Way : A Practiful Guide to the Wisdom Teaching of Ancient Egypt is a refreshing alternative to the more traditional religious literature. It is very well written and easy to follow. Although not advertised as a "Self Help" book; it definitely falls in that category. Isha Schwaller De Lubicz displays her wealth of Egyptian knowledge by starting out with correlating the body system and organs impacting man's spiritual system. The stomach representing "The Opening of Way". The entire book focuses on the spiritual growth of the individual using the lessons of the ancient Egyptians. Its void of the religious rhetoric and concentrates only on the basic of the ancient Egyptian teachings. This is an excellent book for spiritual self examination. If you want a step by step on how to make a spiritual transformation using ancient Egyptian wisdom, this is the book to get. I am using it as my personal "Good news Book - Bible ". I have enjoyed it immensely and look forward to reading more of Isha Schwaller De Lubicz works.
Product Description
Over 44 full-color street maps for Cairo, with clear indexes for streets, cultural centers, embassies, hotels and other points of interest.
Book Description
What do the enigmatic images on ancient Egyptian artifacts mean? What royal names adorn the walls of some of the world's oldest temples? What kind of lives did the people buried in the ancient tombs lead? The keys to unlock this fascinating civilization lie within the glyphs of their sacred language. Appearing a little before 3,000 B.C., Egyptian hieroglyphs were used for thousands of years to write names, label commodities, commemorate historical events, and convey complex stories.
This definitive educational tool provides a systematic, step-by-step approach to learning ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, complete with fun and increasingly challenging exercises and easy-to-reference sign and word lists. By the end of chapter one, readers will begin to decipher simple inscriptions; after completing the entire book, readers will be ready to tackle tomb and temple walls. While learning to decipher the language of the ancient Egyptians, readers will also learn about their history, social structure, and funerary beliefs. An invaluable resource, this book will appeal to amateur Egyptologists, as well as those looking to enhance their museum-going and travel experiences. AUTHOR BIO: Janice Kamrin holds a Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Pennsylvania, and she has taught, written, and lectured widely on the subject of ancient Egypt. She currently works with Zahi Hawass, Secretary of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt, on many of his publications.
Customer Reviews:
My first hieroglyphic book.......2007-10-10
I have just received this book. It is very well written. I read books about Egypt, but none dedicated entirely to hieroglyphs . After the first two chapters when I read some names (which I did not see before!) in the exercises area , I felt like a little Champollion . I like logic and this book makes possible to learn basic things in minutes!
Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs: A practical guide.......2007-03-08
I think it is a very good book above all for beginners. If you are interested of learning about hieroglyphs and you know nothing at all about them this book is a good way to start learning. It is clear, interesting and funny indeed.
Not for beginners.......2006-07-31
I have been studying Egyptian Hieroglyphs for five years utilizing all the teach-yourself-hieroglyph books I could find. I am very glad this was not the first hieroglyph book I picked up. Although it is a handsome, well laid out volume with color graphics, in depth explanations and lessons, it is filled with mistakes. Finding these mistakes is a fun exercise for someone who has previous knowledge of the subject but could be very confusing for the true beginner. The answer key is designed well, giving transliterations and translations but there are several instances where whole phrases are left un-translated. My favorite mistake is one of the hieroglyphic phrases in the lessons that when translated says, "your excellent husband." Ms. Kamrin needs to brush up on her masculine and feminine forms of suffix pronouns. She used the words hy.k ikr instead of hy.t ikr which means the phrase is being directed to a man. As the gang on Seinfeld used to say, "Not that there's anything wrong with that," but it could be confusing when learning the difference between the masculine and feminine forms of the word "your."
If you are a beginner and serious about studying hieroglyphs, I would suggest starting with these books: Egyptian Hieroglyphs: How to Read and Write Them by Stephane Rossini; Decoding Egyptian Hieroglyphs: How to Read the Secret Language of the Pharaohs by Bridget McDermott; and then How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs: A Step-By-Step Guide to Teach Yourself by Mark Collier and Bill Manly.
funzical wunzical.......2006-05-07
I really enjoyed learning hieroglyphics with Dr. Jan. Do not be fooled: they are not for the faint of heart. For those who are affrighted at Chinese and Japanese, hieroglyphics go even further toward multiplexing umpteen systems atop a single character set. But Dr. Jan endeavors to make it easy by using lively examples, color-coding some of the solutions, etc. If you have a strong memory and strong impetus, go for it. You will have a lot of fun and feel a tremendous sense of achievement.
Fantastic book.......2005-08-02
This is a great guide to learning to read from actual monuments and objects. I used the knowledge from the book to translate the faces of some Egyptian obelisks I saw while on vacation in Europe.
I recommend this book unequivocally.

Customer Reviews:
Lots of information in a little book.......2001-10-09
As a first time traveler to Egypt, I found this book to be very helpful. There were not a lot of details, however, you should always do your detailed homework on the places you visit BEFORE you leave the country.
Each night before arriving at the next destination, I would read about the city we would be visiting. It gave very good descriptions on the sites we would be seeing and in general, was a very useful tool. It is small enough that it fits anywhere in your bag. It includes diagrams and history of the tombs and historic sites. Also includes what to wear and what not wear. Word of caution...be very considerate of their customes. You are a guest in a third world country. The author covers other situations too that should be considered when traveling to this exciting land.
For those of you who have not had the experience of traveling to Egypt, I can say it was the trip of a lifetime! We would go back in a heartbeat! When the world situation calms down, go...the people are friendly and we never felt uncomfortable.
Great little book.......2001-09-03
This is a great little referece book filled with little tidbits of information that other books don't offer. I would reccomend however that you also read other books like The Travelers Key to Ancient Egypt by West for broader detail.
I enjoyed this book so much that I will definately read more books by this author.
Not a practical guide, only a quick reference.......2001-08-21
It is a good book as it intends to be a quick reference, but not enough to plan a trip by it. I do find the name misleading. Not really what I expected.
Egypt: A Practical Guide.......2000-11-14
Having just returned from Egypt I found this book rather a blinkered view by a man with several bees in his bonnet. Although the descriptions of the tombs were good the book lacked the breadth and detail required by a first time traveller. It certainly lacked the kind of practical step by step realities needed to actually travel around and see these sites. I found the Rough Guide excellent in comparison.
A Happy Treasure.......1999-10-12
Every time I pick up this book, I marvel at how cute it is. Its size is truly practical for travel, yet its pages contain so much information, in a logical order. I can't wait to take it to Egypt with me, and refer to it with each tour stop.
