Great reviews on places to go throughout the state. I always like to visit the restaurants that the locals go and Frommer lets you know where they are at. If you are going to Denali National Park, make sure you pick up a copy of Discovering Denali.

Lonely Planet is at its guidebook best when it's covering isolated regions where those little details of shelter, food, and transportation are of more than passing concern. Just the section on Denali National Park alone makes Jim DuFresne's guide worthwhile, illuminating the complex new rules governing access to that sensational wildlife reserve, plus giving information on dogsled demonstrations, hiking, rafting, backpacking, and so on. The sections on climate, geography, and ecology are very well done, as are the chapters on the Alaskan people and society. The transportation chapters are vital and comprehensive, and the rest of the guide follows suit, covering all of Alaska (no little task) with reliable acumen, information, and savvy. --Stephanie Gold

I just came back from the vacation in Alaska last night. I came from China one year ago and had this vacation all by myself. Thanks for this book, my trip was fantastic! I used this book for trip planning, like booking hotels. And I had it on my way always. Information in this book is very updated and really helpful. On the last several blank pages, I got some stamps of national parks, as well as contact information of many friends made in this trip. I'll keep this book, which will make me recall all the great details of my trip. And I will recommend this book all my friends who are interested in traveling in Alaska.

We just returned from a month of exploring Alaska and found this book very useful in planning. It has a less commercial view, so we appreciated the suggested accommodations and reviews of things to see. They were always right on target with the less commercial things highlighted. Very useful.

5 out of 5 stars A 'must have' for RV'ing Alaska!.......2007-09-23

I waited to review this book until our return from Alaska. I must say it was amazing! We were driving a 32' Winnebago Chalet from Great Alaskan Holidays (a good experience, I would like to add) and wanted to eliminate getting 'stuck' in tight spaces so we quickly learned to look for those warnings in the book. The campgrounds are described very accurately, the pricing info was reliable and the route descriptions and depictions are also reliable and organized. We also relied on The Milepost for general info on services and sights but for locating campgrounds, this book was invaluable! We RV with Foghorn's books on the west coast of the lower 48 and they are very good too!

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read.......2007-07-17

We found the book very informative, easy to follow, and great value for the price. We plan to use it on our next trip to Alaska and the Yukon.

5 out of 5 stars VERY COMPLETE & COMPREHENSIVE.......2007-05-24

As I write this review, my husband and I are about a week and a half away from leaving on our 4-month expedition to Alaska. We are leaving in early June 2007 and expect to return to Texas by October 1, 2007. I bought this book in April 2007 and have looked at it extensively since I bought it. I'm pretty sure it will be at least as valuable to us as the Milepost will be, if not more so. It begins by answering many questions one may have about what kind of clothes to bring, what to expect at the border, how much money to bring, the best places to see wildlife, insects, laundry - you get the picture. It covers just about everything. It appears as though the authors have visited and rated every campground, private and government, and every place where it's legal to park your rig along the Highway. Directions to each campground are given according to its milepost marker and its GPS location. There are little pictures of each town and where each campground, store and point of interest is located. It describes the places not to miss along the way, as well as good places to fish. I only wish the authors had included all that information through Canada as well!

I'm pretty sure this guide will be well-worn by the time we get home. If you're planning to RV through Alaska, you need to get this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Campground Guide.......2007-03-12

I should probably wait until after our trip in June, 2007, but so far this has been a great campground guide for planning. I have been using it in addition to the Lonely Planet book and the Milepost.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential!.......2006-10-21

We recently completed a four-month motorhome trip to Alaska. We had several books with us, but the most consistent good information came from this book. The campground descriptions were right on. In addition to camping, when we had to decide whether to see one attraction vs another, the book's advice was invaluable. Don't leave home without it!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Alaskan port information.......2007-10-08

This book was very helpful in determining which cities we wanted to include on our cruise port stops, BEFORE booking our trip. We were also able to plan ahead our list of "must see and do" in each port. This book will definitely be used as a guidebook to take with us to Alaska.

4 out of 5 stars Good Guide.......2007-09-12

I just returned from a cruise to alaska and found this book to be very helpful. I work in a cruise related field and found it contained great reviews of different cruise lines. Port information was easy to follow. The "voice" of the book was friendly and eager to help. I recommend it to anyone who is considering or going to Alaska by ship.

4 out of 5 stars Good overview of cruising Alaska.......2007-08-10

This book is a good general overview of cruising in Alaska. It would be particularly helpful for first-time cruisers, as much of book is spent explaining how a cruise "works"-- dining, tipping, etc. I appreciated the recommendations on what to pack for Alaska, and they made several good suggestions that I wouldn't have thought of myself. The book was not as up-to-date as I would have liked (Norwegian Pearl had not sailed as of it's writing), but I guess that's understandable. There were some good suggestions for things to do at the various ports on your own, aside from the shore excursions. In all, a helpful, easy-to-access book.

4 out of 5 stars Useful Information.......2007-07-12

This book has way more information than you really need to know and can be some what ponderous reading it, but I found it very useful in planning my Alaskan cruise. My Fiance and I opted for the South bound cruise from Whittier to Vancouver on the Carnival Spirit and had a wonderful trip. When you go to Alaska, you will enjoy the scenery much more than the weather.

5 out of 5 stars Frommer's Alaska Cruises & Ports of Call 2007 (Frommer's Complete) by Jerry Brown.......2007-06-27

This book was just what I expected it to be. It was in perfect condition, the price was great. I received it right away after ordering.

4 out of 5 stars Alaska Fishing.......2007-09-25

I now live in rural Alaska and my husband has fished all summer - fresh salmon can't be beat! This book was spot on and I look forward to using it to surprise my husband with a cool fishing trip. The pictures were excellant and look just like what I live in!

5 out of 5 stars Probably too good.......2007-08-21

This book is the best, but I think I could do without all the colored pictures, a smaller book, and less expensive. After all, are you going fishing, or sitting in your recliner looking at all the nice pictures?

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and comprehensive, an excellent reference for fishing in Alaska.......2007-07-12

I was very pleased with this purchase. The book covers all of the major sport fish that can be expected in Alaska. Each species gets a detailed treatment including biology, tackle, fishing techniques, and some of the best places to go for each species. The authors also provide a detailed discussion of the various geographic regions of the state (including contact information for guides and air taxis) making it easy to plan a fishing trip by region or by species. The book is filled with photography that beautifully illustrates the fish and places of Alaska.

5 out of 5 stars Explore Alaska.......2007-04-12

Any fisherman planning a trip to Alaska should check out this reference. There are tips on hiring a guide and exploring the waterways on your own.

5 out of 5 stars alaska fishing.......2007-03-16

This book should definately be on your list if you are planning a fishing trip to Alaska. It is the most comprehesive source of information that I have seen.

3 out of 5 stars Alaska (Eyewitness Travel Guides).......2007-08-11

I have used the Eyewitness guides for several other countries. The Alaska guide has the same beautiful color pictures but the city & tour info was nat as complete as some of the other guides. I ended up borrowing a Fodor's guide from a friendFodor's Alaska 2007 (Fodor's Gold Guides)

5 out of 5 stars DK Alaska.......2007-06-28

I enjoyed working with this seller who was very prompt. The book was used, but came in without any wear at all. Great stuff!!

5 out of 5 stars The best general guide to the state I have found, great illustrations.......2007-06-13

I am a frequent Alaska tourist and have used several of the Eyewitness city guides in the past, so I was glad to see that they came out with this book. No one can touch Eyewitness for design and illustrations and their Alaska guide is no exception. Their maps are amazingly clean and functional. It is impossible to pick up this book and not get sucked into it.

The guide is not as comprehensive as a Frommer's or Fodor's, but for me, who needs a listing of every restaurant and gift shop in an area. Eyewitness focuses on the can't-miss attractions and gives more than enough shopping and dining options to cover your stay in state. The information is in bite-sized chunks that are easily scanned and give a good overview to the areas you're visiting.

If I had to say something against this guide it would be that it is so filled with photos that they need to be pretty small. When I flip through it and see these tiny images of areas I have visited, they just don't do justice to the scope of the landscape. But then, maybe this will just help you appreciate Alaska when you are there in person.

If you or someone you know is going to Alaska for a vacation, get them a copy of this book. This is the best guide to the entire state I have found.

Book Description

Follow the true story of a young bear all alone in the Alaskan wilderness and the big-hearted grizzly family that embraced him as their own.

Award-winning photographer Amy Shapira returned to the same remote cove in southeastern Alaska for six consecutive summers, capturing this incredible story as it unfolded. Through her breathtaking photographs and text from noted biologist and author Douglas H. Chadwick, the heartwarming tale of Baylee, her cubs, and the “adopted” bear Emmett comes alive for readers young and old.

5 out of 5 stars a true story.......2007-06-26

Yes, this really is a true story. As a guide who watched Emmett get adopted by Baylee in the wild, I think it is fun to share a story that really happened with kids. Amy's photo's show the summer life of bears as no others seem to do. (Even a bear can have a bad hair day!) This book is also suited for a coffee table book for adults, as the photographs are so interesting you can look at them over and over.

Imagine having to make your way through life without your mom and dad! It's not a very happy thought, is it? Well, imagine you're a grizzly bear and forced to find your own way. He is not yet old enough to live on his own but not a baby anymore either. He's in between ages. It's a pretty lonely time for young Emmett. He lives up in Alaska, where the temperatures range greatly. He travels to a cove where he is watched by visitors but no one knows just who he is or where he came from. He didn't have a name until the visitors started watching him.

There is a family of four bears living in the same area. Baylee is the mama bear with her cubs named Eleanor, Misha and James. Emmett likes to watch the family of bears, if only he could be a part of their family. The bear family seems to be having such fun. Baylee doesn't like Emmett being around and growls to get rid of him. Emmett was determined to make this family his. He makes friends with the little cubs and wins the mom over. Now he feels like a member of a family. We all need a little help sometimes and Emmett gets the help he needs from Baylee and her family.

"Growing Up Grizzly" is based on a true story of grizzly bears up in Southeastern Alaska. The pictures are actual pictures of bears in their habitats and doing what comes naturally to them. I especially liked the picture of the bear looking through a window of a cabin and seeing his reflection. He needed a friend. All the pictures are awesome! The book would be a delight for bear lovers, Alaska lovers and any others who would like a nice adoption story.

Note from Brianne's mother: Brianne has always liked the story of the three bears. "Growing Up Grizzly" is similar only without Goldilocks and with an additional bear. The storyline is excellent because it shows how it doesn't matter where someone comes from, he can be adopted into a family and find love and companionship. Even if the book was written for younger readers, it still brought a delight to this bear-loving reader.

5 out of 5 stars A moving and wonderful true story.......2007-04-16

I dare you to finish this book with dry eyes.

5 out of 5 stars This book is transformative!.......2007-02-27

This is the kind of book I want young people (of all ages) to experience. It is not just the exquisite photos, although they are, indeed, quite beautiful and heart-stiring. It is not just the compelling story line, although the narrative brings the reader right there--to Alaska--to BE with these amazingly beautiful and compelling creatures. Something special is happening in this book: by sharing her love, passion, and profound understanding of these magnificent animals photographer Amy Shapira's work has a transforamtive impact. Just as each of us has a personality, a family life, a community, and a neighborhood, Shapira shows us that tucked away in southeastern Alaska are animals with a fullness of being and experience. This precious book prompts me--as never before--to understand that on every inch of this planet, wherever life exists, there is sanctity and there is nobility. I will never look at bears--or any animals, for that matter--the same way again.

This book was one of the most important references my wife and I used on our passage from Seattle to Skagway. Not only did it give us ideas on where to go the next day, but where to hide in case the weather didn't cooperate. A must have reference for every boater cruising the Inside Passage.

Book Description

A cruise is a complete vacation, so it's important that you choose the one that's right for you. Frommer's Cruises & Ports of Call is the most user-friendly, opinionated, and comprehensive guide you can buy before you set sail. We provide in-depth coverage on cruises departing from U.S. ports to the Caribbean, Alaska, Bermuda, Mexico and Canada.

Unlike rating systems used in other guides, our system is simple. We break down the essential elements of a cruise experience (dining, activities, children's activities, entertainment, service, overall enjoyment, and overall value), and rate them from "poor" to "outstanding." Photos of each ship combine with the text to give a better sense of the very real differences among the various lines.

Most important, this is the only cruise guide that provides the real prices people pay for cruises, not just the rack rates. Other guides tell you that a seven-night cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas costs $1,919. You can pay that if you want to, but only Frommer's tells you that the same cruise is selling for $999. We give both the rack rates and the discount price for every cruise we review. This feature alone makes Frommer's Cruises and Ports of Call by far the most valuable trip-planning book among cruise guides.

Our authors, noted cruise experts who've personally checked out every ship sailing in and around North America, offer candid and unbiased opinions on them all. They are completely up to date, with all the latest developments and the newest ships. You'll also get complete coverage of the major port destinations, with advice on how to spend your limited time ashore.
