1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2007-06-18

I was opening an ecommerce store and debating between zen and oscommerce so I sent for two books this and another. When this book came I was highly disappointed. The printing was large to expand the book. The content was poor and over-priced. Baby Einstein Day On The Farm Gift Basket

3 out of 5 stars good for the ecommerce beginner.......2007-05-28

First, if you're a beginner to ecommerce and you have no idea what you're doing, I recommend this book wholeheartedly. That's what it's for. Well, four stars-- see below.

If you know what you're doing, or you want to do anything semi-technical like migrating from another store like oscommerce, using EasyPopulate, importing from databases et cetera, I still give this book three stars.

I felt like it was missing a short appendix on data imports. They aren't all that hard, but they are semi-technical and it seemed like the author wanted to shy away from that to avoid scaring people. So put it at the end of the book where the newbies don't have to look at it.

Finally, as someone else here said, the layout is extremely ugly.

All in all, good book, and if you're going to be working with ZenCart you should probably have it. If you're new to ecommerce or not skilled with web tech stuff, you should definitely have it. But it's lacking in a couple of respects. Perhaps, guys, this could be corrected in a new edition?

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand -- a must-have book!.......2007-05-03

I've been thinking about using Zencart as part of a redesign of our existing website for quite some time, but couldn't fathom wading through the online tutorials, unassisted, as good as they are. This book puts it all into perspective, easily, and in a friendly tone that does not overwhelm the newbie. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book.......2007-04-12

The book has a conversational style to it, which I enjoy. It's very easy to read. This is one book that I'll have to replace soon, since I'm wearing it out.

The reader is walked through the installation of the store in step-by-step fashion. It covers not only the installation, but the configuration of the store, payment, shipping and a host of other necessities. Nothing is overlooked. If a reader has a question about a certain payment or shipping method, there's a description for it - what it is and how it's used.

The book includes a client checklist - a list of questions that concern the makeup and design of the store. The client checklist by itself is invaluable. It has the questions a client should answer before a store is launched. It allows the client to further envision the kind of store they want and, with the answers, the designer or programmer has all the information needed to create the store right, the first time.

This is a book you'll want to have if you're building a zen-cart store.

5 out of 5 stars Way better than the FrontPage class I paid $150 for!!!.......2007-03-28

I read this book cover to cover the first night...easy to read and use...even where "Tech-speak" was concerned.

In fact, reading it back to front was actually better for me, starting at the goal and heading back to where I was going to start.

It was clear that much thought and effort was given to getting you up and running fast (and first)...then telling you how to modify stuff one at a time...but also making you fuly aware of the consequences for more advanced issues.

I only have two constructive comments:

The first is that you could move one of the last pages in the book regarding printing out the Getting Started Checklist to the front of the book...preferably at the start of Chapter 2 were it could be put to good use (admittedly not a huge issue.)

The second is that at the start of one of your chapters you show a picture of a rice or noodle bowl...with the chopsticks stuck into the food!!! Very Bad Luck...LOL!

4 out of 5 stars Dichotomy to Me.......2004-09-22

As with many books I read, the first half or so often leaves me cold--a lot of it being a rehash or review of basic concepts etc. This book fits that model. The first 5/8 or so didn't do much for me; I even found it a bit annoying. But, I like to read a book from cover-to-cover and see what it really holds. I'm glad I did. Towards the end of the book, the author provides a step-by-step experiential guide to Trekcho practice with pitfalls, recommendations, etc. The wording is personal, straight-forward, and very clear. He also has a very interesting description of the sky exercise. Thus, I do recommend reading (preferably buying and retaining for reference) this book. Maybe you'll like the 1st part better than I did, who knows?

5 out of 5 stars A Shulchan Aruch for our Time.......2007-09-25

This delightfully useful book (the compilation of three earlier handbooks) provides handy, easy to follow 2-3 page explanations of virtually every significant Jewish ritual and custom; everything from lighting a hanukiyah (Hanukka menorah) and building a sukkah to writing your own theology and interpreting your dreams using Jewish tradition. Often the instructions include helpful diagrams and illustrations. As a bonus, there are numerous little entries of useful information, such as lists of all the books in the Bible, major cities in Israel, and how the Jewish lunar calendar works. An entirely worthwhile book.

5 out of 5 stars Review: How Do You Know He's Real?.......2007-06-14

In the book, How Do You Know He's Real, you'll get an inside look into the spiritual lives of 34 celebrities. Hagberg has compiled testimonies ranging from Kirk Cameron to Rudy Sarzo (former bass player for Ozzy Osbourne). Each story is remarkably different and it's amazing to read how God has worked in the lives of each of these well-known people.

5 out of 5 stars Celebrities Share Their Christian Faith.......2007-05-31

The author has collected very readable stories telling how celebrities have become Christians, and they share their low points and their joys here. This is a welcome peek into the lives of well known people who typically are more secretive.
Ricky Skaggs, Kirk Cameron, Gloria Gaynor, Bethel Johnson (34 people in all) tell about their struggles and their early days as new Christians.
Billy Ray Cyrus tells of singing in his grandpa's Pentecostal church when he was 4, and includes the touching lyrics to the song he wrote "The other side."
Jackie (Jacklyn) Zeman, star of General Hospital, advises that when you are at a crossroads "cry out to God and ask for His guidance."
Al Kasha's story resonated with me; this Academy Award winning songwriter overcame agoraphobia, and talks about how Hollywood is a tough place for a Jew who came to Christ, and how he started a Hollywood Bible study group.
There are stories here for anyone to enjoy and find spirit lifting.

4 out of 5 stars Celebrities talk about God in their life.......2007-04-27

(Hagberg has written a companion book with the same title, subtitled God Unplugged)

How Do You Know He's Real? is a collection of celebrity essays about God acting in their lives. The contributors include athletes, musicians, and actors. Their stories often follow a familiar pattern of fame leading to drugs and alcohol before hitting bottom and being turned around by an encounter with God. That's not to say the accounts are all stock and cliched, but rather that God meets each person in their need--and for celebrities that need will be similar. And many of the tales include growing up in stable Christian homes, but still needing to make personal decisions about God and Christ and how that decision impacted their careers.

The stories are collected alphabetically but Hagberg has provided a topic finder so a reader battling discouragement or frustration can find offerings from Billy Ray Cyrus, Nancy Stafford, Zorro, Gary Burghoff or John Schneider.

Each essay begins with a picture and short biography of the contributor, listing their accomplishments. Following the selection is God's Road Map, a few sentences about the issues raised by the author, with Bible verses for teaching and encouragement.

The essays themselves are as varied as the contributors. Some of them read as if they were written to be given as speeches. Several sound like the writer could be sitting at your kitchen table, chatting over the coffee pot. All of them are honest and share from their heart how God has acted in their life and how they know He's real.

Reading the accounts of God acting in both miraculous and mundane ways reminds us that no matter what a person does for a living, each of us are created beings who need a loving Savior and merciful God.

Armchair Interviews says: Up close and personal stories from celebrities.

5 out of 5 stars COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!!! Terrific Read!.......2006-05-18

I received this book as a gift and once I started, I couldn't put it down. Ms Hagberg has captured the beliefs of these well known and respected celebrities, sports figures, and musicians. I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in the series and can't wait to give copies of this one to all my friends. Order 2!

Book Description

A Map for the Inner Journey, for Seekers and Guides Alike

Written with warmth, compassion, and deep understanding, this book offers a map of the inner journey for exploring the time-honored practice of spiritual guidance. Carol Ochs and Rabbi Kerry M. Olitzky speak both to those who seek a Jewish perspective on the spiritual life and those who wish to guide others in this search. Drawing deeply on the riches of the Torah and other important Jewish sources, Jewish Spiritual Guidance offers wisdom and insight to all religious seekers?lay and ordained, Jewish and non-Jewish.

They examine the broad principles of spiritual guidance, describing it as the journey of two people?seeker and guide?through the wilderness toward God. The central relationship is not between the seeker and the guide but between the seeker and God. The guide is a companion who helps the seeker discover patterns, articulate insights, and remain faithful. All the lessons that the guide teaches the seeker are lessons that the guide is also learning, again and again.

This much-needed resource will not only nourish the seeker-guide relationship but also inspire discussions in adult education classes, minyanim, and prayer groups. All religious seekers will find wisdom and understanding through this illuminating book.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Spiritual Friendship from the Jewish Perspective.......2005-05-05

Ochs and Olitzky clearly state their purpose in the preface to "Jewish Spiritual Guidance: Finding Our Way to God." "The purposes of this book are to explain what spiritual guidance is, to encourage people to seek it out, to aid them in supporting one another, and to help prepare them to serve as spiritual guides if that is their calling" (p. vii).

They also concisely define spiritual guidance in the first line of their introduction. "We have no concern more central than to live our lives in a deepening relationship with God" (p. 1). They further develop their focus in chapter one, "Spiritual Guidance is the process that helps us to recognize God's direction, which is there for us if only we can be open to it. Spiritual guidance is a relationship between a spiritual guide and a seeker that is focused on the growth of the seeker" (p. 11). Noticing how few spiritual guides in Jewish circles were equipped for this task, Ochs and Olitzky write to fill that void.

Notice in their definitions and descriptions that they are not confusing spiritual guidance with psychological therapy. Modern therapy tends to be problem-saturated and solution-focused. "You have a problem; we'll help you find the answer." Jewish spiritual direction, like all religious spiritual direction, is God-saturated and journey-focused. "You have a longing for God who also longs for intimacy with you; together we'll explore spiritual roadmaps on your journey that help you to connect to and follow God more humbly, wisely, and peacefully."

Practical chapters on topics such as prayer, listening, recognizing the spiritual path, overcoming fears, revisiting the image of God, studying sacred texts, encountering temptation, enduring the spiritual desert, and living in community offer understandable theory and usable methods for spiritual guidance. A concluding appendix, "The God Questionnaire" is worth the price of an already worthy book.

Reviewer: Dr. Robert W. Kellemen is the author of "Soul Physicians: A Theology of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction," "Spiritual Friends: A Methodology of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction," and the forthcoming "Sacred Companions: A History of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."

5 out of 5 stars Valuable.......1998-03-01

As a reader with no biblical training apart from being brought up in a Judeo-Christian culture, I found this book accessible and relevant. It helps make the bible seem more like metaphors for modern life than I would have expected. This book could even be viewed as a self-help book with a "god" spin on it. There is thoroughness and simplicity in the presentation, with digestible sections addressing different aspects of the topic.

Ravens Way is a journey of blood and death, romance and revenge, taking place on the streets of Philadelphia, where no one is safe.....a must read a must buy!! CALL ME WOLF To those who have no choice but to howl at the hungry moon. A rabid, howling moon reaches out to grab my strangled throat with craving, hungry claws, intensity of lunar midnight now driving me insane. Fingers curl into nervous, anxious paws, the curse of being once bitten by infected teeth bathed in angry, yellow-hooded wolf's bane. Searing pain shrieks violently through skin and bone while beseeching moonbeams scratch and rip away all straggling shreds of lost humanity. The sharp echo of altering joints with a scream of stretching sinew blend together as call of the wild howls a sad farewell to society. Nostrils widely flared in anticipating delight, as hunter's golden eyes search for wary prey, ears twitching forward at the mewling cry of frightened beasts now cowering in the night. Oh...I can feel the dizzy rush of desire for the taste of hot, sweet blood from torn flesh once vibrant and alive. The ravenous moon has called my name once more as I stand in regal silhouette on grizzled hillock, bathed within the glow of silver moon glow. I toss my head skyward, gleaming fangs snapping angrily at grinning stars lost in heaven's angry roar. A growl of primal terror builds to soulful lament as man and wolf combine to sing in lonely harmony. The wretched mind of man now locked inside the shadow of a beast, to rip and claw and tear, but to forever cry and pray for everlasting peace.

        5 out of 5 stars An easy-to-follow, step-by-step, guidebook.......2002-11-10

Collaboratively compiled and edited by Rabbis Kerry Olitzky and Daniel Judson, The Rituals & Practices Of Jewish Life: A Handbook For Personal Spiritual Renewal is a straightforward and practical instructional guide to the origin, manner, and modern-day practice of ten areas of Jewish ritual: Upon Rising and Going to Bed; Covering the Head; Blessings throughout the Day; Daily Prayer; Tefillin; Tallit and Tallit Katan; Talmud Torah; The Continuum of Kashrut; Mikvah; and Entering Shabbot. Enhanced with an informative foreword by Vanessa L. Ochs, and illustrations by Joel Moskowitz, The Rituals & Practices Of Jewish Life is a useful and "user friendly", easy-to-follow, step-by-step, guidebook which is most especially recommended for readers who may have little to no understanding of the proper ritual performance and what it means, yet who want to incorporate more of the Jewish traditions into their daily lives.

4 out of 5 stars "Golden Bits and Pieces".......2002-09-15

If any book better documents the increasingly halachic turn of the liberal Jewish movements in Norht America, I would be hard pressed to find one. The editors, who also have written articles in the text, do an excellant job of providing, perhaps for the first time in a few decades, a guide to daily Jewish religious practice from a liberal, or more accurately, Reconstructionist, point of view. They include solid use of classical Jewish sources and a good basic bibliography with each section.

They discuss all the most important basic subjects, such as daily prayer, the rituals of laying on tallis, kippah and tefillin, daily Torah study, the Jewish dietary laws, use of the Ritual bath and the celebration of Shabbat. Equally critically, they talk about the psychology involved in these ritual observances, and their benefits from a spiritual point of view.
For anyone new to Jewish religious practice, this book is the place to start.

However, as with many books of this type, there is no effort made to show how the various practices so effectively described, fit into a more complete whole. While the authors and editors make repeated references to Jewish mysticism here and there, there is no even brief description of what it is, or how Jewish ritual serves as the foundation for Jewish mysticism. In addition, the authors stress psycological/spiritual benefits to Jewish practice, when there are those among us who have experienced many practical gains as well.

In order to find the connection between these practices and Judaism and its mysticism as a totality, the reader should combine reading the above work, with this writer's own critical description of Jewish mysticism, or Kabbalah, entitled "Jewish History and Divine Providence: Theodicy and the Oddyssey," available for purchase here on Amazon. This work, the only progressive, critical discussion of Jewish mysticism in English, unifies "The Rituals and Practices of a Jewish Life" with their most potent rationale, and in history as well.
