Book Description

Every golfer who’s worth his favorite putter knows where golf is great: Scotland, birthplace of the game and still its most important shrine, from the splendor of St. Andrews to the regal resort at Gleneagles; and Ireland, where the links like Ballybunion and Royal County Down are of unsurpassed beauty and challenge. Whether golfers actually make the pilgrimage or arm-chair it, Where Golf Is Great is indispensable: the most luxurious, entertaining, informative, and exhaustive book on these most important destinations. Written by the bard of Scottish and Irish golf, it combines the most authoritative information with the most beautiful prose and the most stunning color photographs—an unsurpassed celebration of the places where golf is, indeed, great.

Not only is the golf great, but so are the sights, the dining, the lodging—and it’s all here: the pub lunches and three-star dinners; the country-house hotels and full-service resorts. Jim Finegan’s singularly insightful advice includes the very best play-and-stay combinations for once-in-a-lifetime perfect golf days, in this once-in-a-lifetime perfect golf book.

If you're planning a golf trip to the United Kingdom and Ireland, check out the courses in this book. Full-color photographs will whet your appetite before you go.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Work.......2007-02-19

The photographs alone make this book a bargain. All the right courses are featured along with considerable coverage of those lesser known. For anyone considering a golf excursion to Ireland or Scotland this book will show you which courses to play and help with your planning. My thanks to Mr. Finegan.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pictures.......2007-02-19

Mr. Finegan has produced another in his very successful series of books about the pleasures offered by the golf courses in Great Britain and Ireland. The text is of the same high quality as the photographs by Messrs. Lambrecht and Thompson. The result is an elegant book which stimulates happy memories for those that have played the courses and which should whet the appetites of those who have not.

5 out of 5 stars Where Golf is Great.......2007-02-07

Very good coffee table book with numerous large photographs of the great golf courses of Scotland and Ireland, many of which are unique. Instead of using existing very recognizable stock photos, the author has composed photos of well known holes from some very interesting perspectives - that give new insights. The narative is equally strong and worthy. Where Golf is Great is well worth having as part of any golf library.

4 out of 5 stars Golf is great.......2007-01-19

Golf is truly great and this book show you how beautiful golfcources can be by the most georgeous pictures I have ever seen. The book is huge and heavy, but the best cources in Scotland/Irland are mentioned. The reason for not getting 5 stars is that such a huge book should really have covered much more. There are just too few courses discribed. The one in it though are probably the best and if you have enough cash when travelling here you are ok.

Book Description

Golf is a Scottish game. It has been played by the Scots for centuries, and Scotland is its spiritual and cultural home. This is a book devoted to one nation's devotion to a game of stick and ball which today casts its enchantment over the entire world. The beginnings of golf and its early development are shrouded in mystery and are part fact and part fable. The Scottish Golf Book separates one from the other as it traces the early history of golf to the multimillion-dollar, worldwide obsession it has become today. Images from the earliest days of Scottish photography recall titanic battles between the early superstars of the game, while the modern lens takes the reader on a spectacular and magical journey around the historic, the classic, and the hidden treasures of Scotland's finest courses.

5 out of 5 stars Very complete guide to golf in Scotland.......2002-02-27

I bought this book "on site" in Scotland in 2000. A really great book. I agree with the descriptions of the courses, at least the dozen of the I've played. A funny thing is that the chapter about scottish players, the players of the future does NOT include Paul Lawrie, who soon after the book was printed became the first Scot to win the Open for a long time. But despite that, the book is great. You will find all the inspiration you need here.

Book Description

Lowe takes us along the rugged eastern coast, from St. Andrews up to Montrose and Cruden Bay and Royal Aberdeen, "from heather, whin and sand, to points north," to Nairn and Dornoch. Then to the west coast, to Prestwick and Troon. It's not only the courses themselves that Lowe illuminates along the way, but the winding roads, the ancient villages, the farms and whiskey distilleries, and the people who call this land their home as well. Each step of his pilgrimage is given its due.

A wonderful collection of photographs of golf courses. If you have been there to play them, this is a terrific way to reminisce

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars from someone who's been there!.......2007-01-09

I purchased this book for my father who visits Scotland to golf each year. He LOVED the book. He said, "it really captures the feel of walking the courses". He is excited to go back this Spring and look at them in a new light since noticing things in the book. A great gift for the golfer in your life!

4 out of 5 stars Visual Feast of Scottish Links Golf.......2006-08-28

Great volume on the essential key links courses in Scotland. The text is fine and to the point. There's some interesting insight especially into the history of golf (St.Andrews and Dornoch in particular), but nothing overboard.

I also think it was a good idea to divide the golf into regions. It makes the courses more approachable plus you get to appreciate the slight nuances from one region to another.

The bottom line is this book is about the photography with the avid golfer in mind. Simply fantastic pictures. I'm an amateur photographer and I can tell you Ian spent an enormous amount of time putting these photos together. On almost every shot, it's clear he had to wait for the right time of day and the right moment to capture the dramatic setting with clouds/sun/wind/shadows in the foreground/background. In addition, he more often than not is using a vantage point to the direct benefit of the golfer. By this I mean you will appreciate the difficulty, challenge, and strategy of a given hole or set of holes from Ian's chosen vantage point and framing. Tremendous aerial shots as well. What I really thought was done well was the combination of key hole reviews (from Kyle Philipps of Kingsbarns fame) and multiple vantage point pictures. Together they really worked well to paint a picture for the golfer planning to play any one of these courses.

When all is said and done, you owe it to yourself to pick up this volume before heading across the pond. In fact, bring it with you, so you can compare your experience to the book itself. You won't regret it.

The only slight negative I would give to the book is the sometimes poor print reproduction of some of the quality photographs. Not the photographer's fault, but the publisher's.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read.......2005-12-10

If you have, or have dreamed of traveling to Scotland, you must read this book. The photos are magnificent. I have played many and the book brings back such fond memories. Will play more next year as we return.

This book is simply wonderful. Why it took three months to get to me I will never know, but the wait was worth it. The photos are first rate and give the reader the true feeling that he is walking these legendary fairways. For anyone who has ever played in Scotland or who dreams of doing so, this book is for you. You will not be dissappointed!

Book Description

The Old Course at St. Andrews is to golfers what St. Peter's is to Catholics or the Western Wall is to Jews: hallowed ground, the course every golfer longs to play -- and master. In 1983 George Peper was playing the Old Course when he hit a slice so hideous that he never found the ball. But in looking for it, he came across a For Sale sign on a stone town house alongside the famed eighteenth hole. Two months later he and his wife, Libby, became the proud owners of 9A Gibson Place.

In 2003 Peper retired after twenty-five years as the editor in chief of Golf magazine. With the younger of their two sons off to college, the Pepers decided to sell their house in the United States and relocate temporarily to the town house in St. Andrews. And so they left for the land of golf -- and single malt scotch, haggis, bagpipes, television licenses, and accents thicker than a North Sea fog. While Libby struggled with renovating an apartment that for years had been rented to students at the local university, George began his quest to break par on the Old Course.

Their new neighbors were friendly, helpful, charmingly eccentric, and always serious about golf. In no time George was welcomed into the local golf crowd, joining the likes of Gordon Murray, the man who knows everyone; Sir Michael Bonallack, Britain's premier amateur golfer of the last century; and Wee Raymond Gatherum, a magnificent shotmaker whose diminutive stature belies his skills.

For anyone who has ever dreamed of playing the Old Course -- and what golfer hasn't? -- this book is the next best thing. And for those who have had that privilege, Two Years in St. Andrews will revive old memories and confirm Bobby Jones's tribute, "If I were to set down to play on one golf course for the remainder of my life, I should choose the Old Course at St. Andrews."

5 out of 5 stars If you love Golf you'll love this Book........2007-08-06

This has to be one of the "Gems" of Golf Travel books.

From start of finish I found this book well written, humorous, sophisticated and wonderfully self-effacing. I would like to meet George Peper; I'm sure we would get along very well. Maybe a game on the Old Course would do the trick.

This is a fabulously entertaining tale of George and his wife's move to St. Andrews from an important position in the U.S.A., namely editor of Golf Digest. The story begins with the acquisition of an apartment overlooking the hallowed turf of the 18th Green of the Old Course at St.Andrews, the home of Golf.

George has the extremely good fortune of being a member of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club and sets about using this privilege to good effect. Not only does he become a popular and successful member, he also achieves a long held ambition; playing a round on the Old Course in Par.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have been inspired by his "two years of golf" and long to follow his example by playing the Old Course, at least once.

His fondness for the people of St. Andrews and Scotland in general comes through with a warmth and genuinely felt emotion.

I can not imagine anyone finding this book disappointing. To me it has been a wonderful windfall.

5 out of 5 stars I felt as if I were there.......2007-07-29

Someday before I turn 50 (I just turned 40), I plan to visit Scotland and St. Andrew's. But I already feel as if I have been there once after reading Mr. Peper's book.

Mr. Peper really captures the spirit of the town. It's so much different from the hustle and bustle of American life and the digital age in general. He breaks the book into small mostly unrelated "chapters" which highlight part of the town, the course, family, etc.

Thanks, George! Your book was an enjoyable read cover-to-cover.

3 out of 5 stars A good read if you have been to St Andrews.......2007-07-23

George Peper is no Herbert Warren Wind, but his book is an enjoyable read for those who have spent time in St Andrews.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfull writing of golf and life in its birthplace.......2007-07-19

I loved this book. It was the perfect combination of life and golf in golf's birthplace - St Andrews. The writer provided an excellent look into life in the golf club and the village of St Andrews; their people, the culture and the history. Mr Peper writes with an excellent dry witt and makes you feel as if you know him personally. I enjoy books the most when I feel like I can relate to the place and people being written about and the author was very good at doing this. While being a single digit handicap golfer and a past editor of Golf Magazine and traveling in a very select inside group of professional golfers, media personalities and celebrities, Mr. Peper never took himself too seriously as a golfer, a writer or as a person. The more I read this book, the harder it became to put down and the more I looked forward to reading it the next day. It was educational, enlightening and enjoyable. It is a book you can just lean back, put your feet up and enjoy while at any time of day or night. The only thing that bothered me about this book was wondering how the author pronounced his name, Pepper or Peeper so I contacted a writer who interviewed the author for a magazine and was told that it was Pepper and that he was as enjoyable and selfless in person as he seems in his books. I look forward to Mr Peper's next book.

5 out of 5 stars Great, interesting, funny : you live un st. andrews.......2007-05-16

Thanks George Peper!!!!:

For one of the best golf books. Its as if I was actually there.
I can`t wait to go to the "OLD COURSE" and expirience the magic you narrated in your book.
The srtucture of the story (expirience)is wonderfull and adictive.
You read the first page and want to keep on reading till you can barely keep your eyes open.

If you love reading and golf this book is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Scotland Golf .......2007-07-21

A little over a year ago, I bought this book as I was going to plan a trip to Scotland with 7 other friends and I wanted to research the best courses to play for a week long trip. I read the book quickly and settled on a number of courses to play. I sent Allan Ferguson an email and he quickly responded and actually helped me coordinate the trip. We got back about 6 weeks ago and it was the most amazing trip that I have ever been on. Not only did the book and Allan's recommendations of courses come in handy, but also he instructed and helped me (as mentioned in his book) coordinate the trip much much cheaper than if I had used one of the well known, but over priced golf travel agencies such as Perry Golf. Quite simply, there isn't a better book on golf in Scotland and if you are thinking about planning a trip, Allan's services or recommendations will come in handy to save you plenty of cash on your trip.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Trip Planner.......2007-06-09

Unless you're being comped by a lobbyist on your next golf trip to Scotland, buy this book. Ferguson provides accurate and updated information; I found his reviews of courses and places to stay spot on. If you're the type of traveller who prefers the "hidden gems" instead of doing a "grand tour", you will find this book especially useful. I used this book to plan a recent golf trip to Scotland, and it was thoroughly enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Spot on!.......2007-03-14

Quite simply, Allan Ferguson "gets it." His logistical knowledge, the people, places, things to do when you're not golfing, the courses, and even hole-by-hole descriptions are invaluable. His sensibilities mirror my own, and that of my group. I have successfully used this book to plan two trips of a lifetime. Like Allan says, you can use this book to travel to Scotland twice for less than the cost of one trip by the tour operators.

5 out of 5 stars Must read.......2007-02-22

A must read before planning your own golf or vacation to Scotland. All the useful info one is looking for. An excellent book and reference guide.

5 out of 5 stars A Must.......2006-09-21

Simply put, if you're an American (on anyone else who can read English) and you want to travel abroad to play golf in Scotland, this book is "a must," the first one you should buy, and maybe the only one you really need. That is, unless you don't care about what the trip will cost and you have no difficulty letting other people make decisions for you. Mr. Ferguson gives you the ins and outs of making your own arrangements, the pros and cons of various approaches, and the highlights of a number of top-notch Scottish golf courses. He gives you the tools to do it on your own, without the tour company or travel agent . . . to create your own golfing adventure. Which is not to say that Mr. Ferguson will not work with you as non-comissioned, fee-based agent (as he's done with me), but it's also very clear he'd be just as happy, maybe more so, to have you buy the book and plan the adventure on your own (as I do now). By the way, the second book you ought to buy is James Finegan's "Where Golf is Great" (see my Amazon review), a judgment with which I feel certain Mr. Ferguson would not disagree.

Scotland's famous golf courses come alive in this memoir from the former golf columnist and author of Emerald Fairways and Foam Flecked Seas. With plenty of detours (the author's wife doesn't play golf), Finegan captures the spirit of the sport's hallowed backyard.

Book Description

Every golfer alive knows that he or she has two ancestral homes: one's own, and Scotland. On her rolling shores the game of golf had its origins, and to walk the links of St. Andrews is to feel at one with the shepherd who decided one day to see how far he could whack a stone with his crook. Most serious golfers will make the pilgrimage to Scotland, to try to hit the Postage Stamp green at Troon, to trace the footsteps of Ben Hogan at Carnoustie, and to brave the challenge of the Road Hole at St. Andrews; all golfers dream of taking such a trip.

For the tourist or the dreamer, there can be no better guide than James W. Finegan. A passionate advocate of the game that's played on the links between land and sea, Finegan combines a writer's eye, a historian's knowledge, and a golfer's sense of wonder and apprehension to provide an impossibly ambitious grand tour of golf's native land.

In a loop of a thousand miles that begins in Edinburgh and ends across the Firth of Forth in St. Andrews, Finegan covers some sixty courses, visiting the true shrines of the game, the courses that are well known and respected, and the little-known gems you might otherwise pass right by. He shares the history of the courses, both of their creation and of the most famous matches played there; he also writes marvelously about the scenic and strategic charms to be found as you play them yourself. And he provides all the information you need to make your arrangements to do just that -- because, unlike most championship courses in the United States, the great courses of Scotland are available to the public.

In addition to his delightful descriptions of the golf to be found there, Finegan gives us his recommendations for places to stay, ranging from the most modest bed-and-breakfast to the most magnificent castle hotel. He describes the pleasures to be found off the beaten track: the spectacular views from a country road, or the ancient cathedral that's worth a stop on the way to the first tee. And because all the travel within the country is done by car, he spells out the actual routes from town to town and course to course.

Blasted Heaths and Blessed Greens is a book to be read, to be savored, and to be tucked away in your suitcase when you finally undertake the journey of your dreams.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Guides to Links Golf.......2007-01-08

Above all others that I have read (and that about includes them all)Finegan's books are absolutely essential while planning (and during) a trip to Scotland or Ireland. My trips to both countries were enhanced immensely by these wonderful texts. Finegan is a great writer in the old style--passionate, elegant, grandiose in the best possible sense. His enthusiasm and love for the game, the royal and acient game, are infectious and tempts one to follow in his footsteps when he advises, for example, to deplane in Shannon, drive the hour to Lahinch, and strike the first shot up that glorious sandhill even before one has checked in The Greenbrier Inn or some such place. I still relive, years after my trips, the great times on the brilliant links by reading Finegan, and dream of going back.

5 out of 5 stars Great Golf Book.......2000-11-30

As others have said this is a great book to have if you are going to take a golfing vacation to Scotland. Mr. Finegan provides wonderful information about many diferent course. I enjoyed reading it before I went and even more after I returned and played a number of the courses. Would love to return some day to play the ones we missed!!!

5 out of 5 stars THE indispensable source for your Scottish golf pilgrimage.......2000-02-07

Blasted Heaths is a true gem of a book. James Finegan literally knows the country - its golf, its people, its nature - like the back of his hand. You get expert, finely crafted, hole-by-hole reviews of over sixty courses. As a added bonus, there are restaurant reviews and lodging suggestions.

The book is divided into geographical regions and is helpful in helping you lay out your agenda. Sure, you know to play St. Andrews, Troon and Turnberry, but the book helps you go beyond the usual brand names.

An example of how 'Blasted Heaths' can pay off: Gleneagles is quite the amazing golfing experience, but perhaps a bit too steep in the wallet for this 20+ handicapper. Finegan points out a course right next door (Auchterarder G. C.) that, while certainly not in Gleneagles class, has a 'handful of first-rate holes' at about one-third the cost. A great recommendation! Not the holy, near-religious experience Finergan associates with Royal Dornoch, Cruden Bay, and Machrihanish and others, but it shows that the book can be used for all levels (skill and monetary) of golf.

My one recommendation (seconded by Finergan) is that you spend a couple of days in St. Andrews and soak up the environment. There's enough golf to keep you there for 3+ days, and the town itself has a real university feel and exudes charm and history. I suggest staying out of the hotels and setting up in one the many cozy guest houses a block or two from The Old Course. My wife and I stayed at the Craigmore House (ph: 334-472-142). You'll need a reservation, but it's well worth your planning ahead.

5 out of 5 stars Read it before you go and upon return........1999-06-08

A friend gave me this book as a gift just before my first golf trip to Scotland. I played 10 of the 40 courses he reviewed. I read the entire book before the trip but enjoyed it much more after having played the courses. Many great tips in the book, as well. For example, we stayed in a Bed and Breakfast in Gullane and the author mentioned a restaurant there which he considered the best in Scotland. He is correct and we would have missed this wonderful experience without his book. His descriptions of many of the golf holes on the courses he covered were just great. For the golfer who enjoys the British Open and the Ryder Cup, this book will be delicious.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehesive review of playing golf in Scotland........1999-03-03

My husband and I are planning our once-in-a- lifetime pilgrimage to Scotland in July 1999. So far, this is the best and most comprehensive book we have read regarding the courses recommeded to us by our travel agent. Other books only highlighted the most famous courses (British Open quality) and left out many of the "less famous" but equally charming golf courses available to the public.

    5 out of 5 stars A definitive work.......2002-04-17

Congratulations to Vic Robbie on his revised edition of Scotland's Golf Courses. The first book was good but this is even better with more information and write-ups on courses, including all the new ones that have sprung up in recent years. The photographs by Brian Morgan, the world's No.1 golf photographer, are great and give you a real taste of golfing in Scotland.

A great book. I wanted to explore Scotland and its golf and Scotland's Golf Courses: The Complete Guide was the perfect guide to the country and the game. Not only did it tell me all about the famous courses but also the hidden gems which I will go back and play again. It had so much information in it that all I had to do was turn up and play.

4 out of 5 stars Guide for Scottish golfing vacation.......2001-02-13

My brother in law and I decided to travel to Scotland for a Golfing vacation. With only about two months advance notice, I ordered the book hoping to use it as a means for selecting good courses that would not cost a lot of money.

The book devotes about a page to each course which are grouped by geographical region. The courses are rated and contain excerpts from reviews by other golfers. We played 7 of the courses in the book and found that the ratings were accurate. However, the green fee prices are out of date, with the courses averaging about 30% more than quoted in the book. Contact information is provided for each course and when a advance reservation is made, the course will tell you the rate.

If this is your first trip to Scotland, then the book is a great way to get started and plan your trip. It does not focus on anything but the courses, so travel times, lodging and other sites to see are not covered in the book.

    Product Description

This story about golf takes place in 16th Century Scotland and is inspired by the earliest historical records about the greatest game. In it Ian MacPherson, a dirt poor farmer and so-so golfer, decides he must win his towns annual golfing tournament or face financial ruin. Galbraith, the Scottish Laird who rules the area, has financial problems of his own and also has designs on the tournament. He hires a golfing ringer from Edinburgh, Black Bart, to try and steal the tournament from the locals. Along with fascinating descriptions about early golf, there is plenty of earthy humor, cruel deception and local Scottish color. The author is a descendant of the MacPherson clan and swears at least some of what happens is fact, passed down to him from family stories.

Mr. MacPherson and the editors of this book, Gary Goodman and Mark Ziegler, have turned the usually "stuffy" subject of golf on its head.

Easily one of the most humorous and refreshing stories I have read in quite some time.
