5 out of 5 stars great hiking guide.......2007-09-27

We spent a week in the Yellowstone and hike everyday - this guide helps us as a lot to find what is the best for each day. We easily found the way how to get to the trails and we never lost our way. This book is definitely very useful for everybody going to the Yellowstone (or Grand Teton) not to stay on road but enjoy hiking.

4 out of 5 stars Novice Trail Walker.......2007-03-09

I won't be traveling out west until this summer. I think this book does an excellent job in reviewing the trials in short order, from an experienced hiker. It gives you all of the information you need to decide on which trails you should plan on hiking if you do not know the area. Allows you to plan your trip for maximum effect.

The elevation guides and ratings guide allow you to make reasonable decisions about setting out on a hike based not only on mileage but also on the difficulty you can expect and practical decisions about parking and taking kids along.

I think it it will be very useful.

First of all, this is a GREAT book.

I just want other readers to know that 3/4's of this book, if not more, is on Yellowstone hikes. I would have loved more hikes on Tetons - at least half and half...which is what I was expecting when buying this book.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect book for the LOCAL Idaho/Montana/Wyoming Regular.......2006-06-07

I live about 90 miles from Jackson and 100 from West Yellowstone, so I go to both parks a lot. As a teacher, I have my summers to go camp and hike from time to time, and I just got back from a trip today. While at Lake Hotel, I chanced on this book, and bought it. This was yesterday. The book has 45 different trails in it to hike in Yellowstone and the Tetons (though most are in Yellowstone). I went ahead and hiked one yesterday (Elephant Back) and got a great view of Yellowstone Lake. The directions were very clear and there were guide-points along the route in the book so I knew just where I was. The book even mentioned this is Grizzly habitat in the spring/early summer, and sure enough, when I got down from the hike, there was a bear. This kind of information could be a lifesaver to the inexperienced Yellowstone or Teton hiker. Today, I hiked two more hikes in the book, one short one at West Thumb and a longer one at Biscuit Basin up to a waterfall and overlook. This book is very easy to use, has great maps, grades the difficulty of each hike, and has a variety from hikes under a mile to hikes of over twenty that take several days. My goal, using this excellent book, is to hike them all in a year or so. Great photos, durable cover, great maps. This is the perfect book for locals or for tourists who come often or who are planning a two to three week stay. I would not think it would be good for someone visiting for a day or two, as you could not scratch the surface of this gold mine of information. Two thumbs up!

4 out of 5 stars Good Hiking guide for Families.......2006-06-28

We just got back from our trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. This and Frommer's Guide to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons were the books we took with us.

We found this book to be right on target with each of the hikes we took. We appricated the overviews and descriptions of each of the hikes.

Traveling with small children can be a challenge, but this book did a good job at helping us choose which hikes would be enjoyed by all of us. I like how they had a chart of which hikes are good for animal sightings, which for historical value and which for exceptional beauty.

I was a bit disappointed that it didn't cover more aspects of each of the parks and things to do. Though it mentioned such things as horseback riding or rafting, it didn't offer any insight into what would be seen on a rafting trip or riding in the grand canyon of Yellowstone vs. in Roosevelt Lodge (for example). It stuck basically to the hiking trails, which was fine, but the title of the book would be more accurately called, "Hiking With The Family in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons".

I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a good over-all hiking reference for the parks (you certainly don't need kids to appriciate it). It was easy to read, easily formated and easy to throw in a backpack.

4 out of 5 stars Outdoor family guide better.......2006-06-13

I was using an "Outdoor Family Guide to Yellowstone National Park" and "Top Trails" and I found Outdoor Family Guide to be much more up to date. Several of the trail guides in "Top Trails" were outdated when I actually arrived at the park. After several days in and around the park, my family and I left "Top Trails" in the car and only used the "Outdoor Family Guide." The family guide also proved more inclusive for other outdoor activities besides just hiking. It's a great all around book!

3 out of 5 stars "Top Trails" book is better.......2006-03-08

I purchased this book as well as Top Trails' "Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park" by Andrew Dean Nystrom, and was disappointed with "Family Guide" as compared with "Top Trails". As I am using these books to plan a family vacation, I am especially interested in finding child-friendly hikes. The "Top Trails" book provides a good summary of the hikes (mileage, difficulty, terrain, and activities) at the beginning of the book, an overview missing from "Family Guide".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2007-01-30

This book breaks things down for easy use trail planning, including extra excursions and were to camp on both overnight an longer trips . It even gives you info on each camp site. complaint: sometimes the maps are not next to trail you are reading about but next to another trail in the area. All of the campsites on my topo map are not in the book map although they are described in the back.

3 out of 5 stars Very Few Mid-Range Hikes.......2005-04-28

I generally like Schneider's guides, and appear to be in the minority here, but I did not love this one. It is a surprisingly thick book with lots of trails; unfortunately most of them are either short tourist strolls or long, multi-day back country excursions. We had difficulty finding hikes that called out to us in the 12-16 mile range (usually not a problem for us - most guides leave us wishing we had 2 weeks to do all the long day hikes we are interested in) and ended up going with ranger recommendations when we got there. If you have 5-10 days for a backcountry trek, this is definitely the book for you. But if you are looking for long day hikes you may want to look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars ALONGSIDE THE LONELY PLANET GUIDE, THE WAY TO GO..........2005-02-02

I found this guide indespensible in planning (and executing) my family's trip to Yellowstone. As has been noted, there is a quirky regional grouping problem with this guide (it groups the trails geographically rather than by how they are accessed). Yet this book is far better than any of the others I investigated (Orville Bach's is a distant second still worth investing in).

The Lonely Planet guide to the Yellowstone region really goes hand in hand with this one. The Lonely Planet gives a good overview with some regional coloring. This guide really lets you know what you're up against trail-wise.

One thing that humored me greatly in our jorney across country were the varying uses of "easy, moderate, and strenuous" in the different parks between my house and Yellowstone. A free tip: An "easy" trail in Yellowstone is substantially more difficult than any "strenuous" trail at Mount Rushmore.

Yellowstone is a place of haunting beauty. It was probably inadvisable for me to go at such a young age (I am in my twenties)--I will spend years longing to go back.

Get this guide. Go to Yellowstone. Explore the trails, not just the boardwalks.

You'll never regret it.

There is no place on Earth that I give a higher recommendation (with the possible exception of the Tetons).

5 out of 5 stars Best all-around guide to Yellowstone's trails.......2004-10-27

This guide lists 109 trails, organized by region and sorted into short, medium, and long hikes. Like other Falcon guides, it provides maps of each trail and valuable information about elevations and steepness. The information is clearly organized, and summarized at the head of each trail listing.

Like other Falcon guides it has a chart listing best flat terrain day hike, best wildlife viewing, most strenuous, best scenery, and so on. The information here is good for those hikes I've taken. Bill Schneider writes well and does a good job describing the hikes so that you can decide which ones are best for you. If you consult just one book on the trails of Yellowstone, this is the one to use.

I'm not fond of the regional organization of the book, which sorts hikes into Northwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast. Reasonable as that sounds, it's not really how the park is organized spatially. The Belcher area, for example, is a region unto itself that has to be accessed from outside the park in Idaho. Yet this book lumps it together with the trails around Old Faithful. The Southeast trails include those on the South Entrance road, which is really much closer to Old Faithful, as well as trails around Lake and Fishing Bridge, which are closer to Canyon. This means that if you're staying at Old Faithful or Canyon and looking for day hikes nearby, you have to flip back and forth between two (or even three) sections. (See the Lonely Planet Guide for a more successful organizational scheme.)

5 out of 5 stars The Best Yellowstone Hiking Book.......2003-08-23

In preparation for a family vacation in Yellowstone I sampled 4 different hiking books, and this was by far the best. It had the best descriptions, maps, photos, and readability. I liked the way the author categorizes hikes by special interest: fishing, wildlife viewing, etc. It also provides good information on backcountry campsites if you're looking to backpack. There is no index, which is annoying, but otherwise it's a key buy.

5 out of 5 stars Yellowstone.......2007-08-26

Very thorough description of trails. Chart of easy, moderate and strenuouos trails is helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Best of its kind.......2007-08-01

The twenty-five years of cumulative ranger experience of the authors really shows. Yellowstone hiking guides by Bill Schneider and Robert Stone contain more hikes (with much briefer descriptions) and guides by Tom Carter and Mark Marschall are fine books rich in description but the Andersons' book of 29 hikes is the "gold standard." It combines accuracy, useful topographic maps, interesting naturalist information, and excellent color photographs at a great price. It even makes a good souvenir to keep after you've hiked.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-07-30

Having just returned from Yellowstone, I have to say what a great help this book was to us. I bought 4 books with me, but this one was The Book.
It was helpful planning the hikes, then while on the hike was a great asset. I recommend it highly!

5 out of 5 stars Best guide to Yellowstone day hikes.......2004-10-27

This guide includes 29 day hikes, well organized by park region. Its 28 pictures also provide a nice glimpse into some of the terrain you'll see on those hikes. It's small and easy to carry in your pack, but it covers a relatively small number of hikes in the park.

Each hike listing provides the usual driving and hiking directions found in guide books. Unlike the other guidebooks here, each hike also includes a topographical map of the hike. (The Falcon Guide includes elevation information on a separate chart but I still find the topo easier to use.) This makes the book very useful for armchair planners who haven't yet taken my advice to buy the Trails Illustrated map.

In addition, each hike includes a brief "special attention" section that is surprisingly helpful. For example, if a given trail is closed in early summer for bear management, you'll see that fact highlighted here instead of being hidden in the text.

The best part of the book is the "naturalist notes," however. The selling point of this book is that it is written by two rangers who are used to sharing their knowledge along a trail. That's exactly what they do here. As a result, it is easier to visualize the trail experience from this book than from any of the other guides I've seen.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a 1st Class true "Day Hiking" book for Yellowstone.......2003-12-01

This guide was an invaluable resource for making the best of a week at Yellowstone. It was like carrying a park ranger in your pocket (just much less weight). First of all, the first few pages have trails listed by both (1) location in the park (Yellowstone is LARGE) and by difficulty. These lists include highlights of each trail. Approximately 30 trails are described in detail. For each trail, roundtrip distance, elevation change, difficulty level, and expected duration (hours) is listed along with a brief description, potential hazards, direction to the trailhead, and best times of year to hike. Subsequently, a detailed naturalist's description of the trail is provided. These notes are perfect for planning your hikes of using as a step-by-step guide for reading as you hike. The authors provide details about wildlife, flora & fauna, geology, history, and scenery along each trail. Each trails has a full-page easy-to-read contour map that provides the hiker with information on elevation changes and other useful details. As if the trail descriptions didn't already make you want to hike every trail, the guide provides a color photo from each trail making me wish I had time to hike the entire guide. The Anderson book also provides lists of what to bring on day hikes as well as tips for hiking in grizzly country. If a day hike for you is 15-20 miles or more, consider the Marschall book on Yellowstone trails (keep in mind, the first description of a trail often comes 5-10 miles into it). Trails you don't want to miss: Mt. Washburn, Storm Point, Avalanche Peak, Yellowstone Grand Canyon Rim (either or both), Pelican Creek, Trout Lake. We had the pleasure of meeting Ranger Carol Anderson (co-author) at the Lake Visitor Center - she spent an hour reviewing hikes with us. These folks know their stuff - I highly recommend this book for the average day hiker.

      Book Description

Yellowstone's panoramic hiking map beautifully illustrates the diversity of this vast national park, from thermal features to high mountain peaks, from cauldrons to large mountain lakes, from small creeks to large rivers and from cascades to some of the world's most powerful waterfalls. The hiking trails are just as varied. Many of them are fairly level and distances are covered quickly, while others are steep and reach the tundra. The wildlife ranges from pikas to grizzlys. The Trail Tracks® hiking map provides information about all of these features. Please note the distances are not to scale on this illustrated map of Yellowstone, however, distances and elevation gains are listed in the quick-reference charts provided.

I found the map helpful except that I find it odd that the south end of the park is shown on top and the north end on the bottom. No idea what the point of that was. Like looking at a map of Yellowstone upside down. Once you get over that, I found it interesting and helpful. Shows terrain and features well

      1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!!!.......2003-07-20

I would give it negative stars if possible. I purchased this map while purchasing other books on Yellowstone. I have to say I was quite disappointed by this map. It's not very detailed and I can't stand trying to read a map that has South oriented to the top of the map, after all most books and other info always show North at the top. I highly reccomend the National Geographic maps, they might cost more but are much better in quality and will come in handy while hiking.

      Book Description

      “Let’s get lost together . . . ”

Lost in My Own Backyard brings acclaimed author Tim Cahill together with one of his—and America’s—favorite destinations: Yellowstone, the world’s first national park. Cahill has been “puttering around in the park” for a quarter of a century, slowly covering its vast scope and exploring its remote backwoods. So does this mean that he knows what he’s doing? Hardly. “I live fifty miles from the park,” says Cahill, “but proximity does not guarantee competence. I’ve spent entire afternoons not knowing exactly where I was, which is to say, I was lost in my own backyard.”

Cahill stumbles from glacier to geyser, encounters wildlife (some of it, like bisons, weighing in the neighborhood of a ton), muses on the microbiology of thermal pools, gets spooked in the mysterious Hoodoos, sees moonbows arcing across waterfalls at midnight, and generally has a fine old time walking several hundred miles while contemplating the concept and value of wilderness. Mostly, Cahill says, “I have resisted the urge to commit philosophy. This is difficult to do when you’re alone, twenty miles from the nearest road, and you’ve just found a grizzly bear track the size of a pizza.”

Divided into three parts—“The Trails,” which offers a variety of favorite day hikes; “In the Backcountry,” which explores three great backcountry trails very much off the beaten track; and “A Selected Yellowstone Bookshelf,” an annotated bibliography of his favorite books on the park—this is a hilarious, informative, and perfect guide for Yellowstone veterans and first-timers alike. Lost in My Own Backyard is adventure writing at its very best.

4 out of 5 stars A great entry point for those seeking to get the most out of a Yellowstone visit..........2007-08-29

I have been to Yellowstone. I have used numerous hiking guides. I have even, in my fascination, read some books on the history and geology of the park.

Having used the Lonely Planet Yellowstone as a primary guide for an overview, I was pleased to find that the man--Tim Cahill--who had written the delightful introduction to that book has written a small book of his own on some of his adventures in the park. More than just stories, this book is a resource on multiple levels.

This coming year, I hope to be taking a BUNCH of people with me on a road trip to our nation's great "backyard." When I think about trying to get people fired up for such an adventure, the stories and enthusiasm of this book help me to get a little more enthusiasm. It further helps me to know where to begin to describe the awesome VASTNESS of wonder to be found in Yellowstome.

More than that, this book, with its list of further Yellowstone resources in the back, is a gold mine for those looking for Yellowstone resources. When Christmas rolls around, I will be sorely tempted to give this book as a gift to many who are thinking of going on the trip next year.

Until then, you should check this book out. And more than that, you should REALLY check Yellowstone out. Theres is no place like it on earth!

3 out of 5 stars A pleasant diversion but not a compelling one.......2007-06-07

This book is a series of essays prompted by walking trails in Yellowstone. Thus, the subtitle is a misnomer - - this book discusses a bunch of walks, not just one. The title is a misnomer, too, as he's never "lost" in a real sense. But this book does involve some "getting lost" in a metaphorical sense. Cahill also wanders off topic a lot, usually in a pleasant way, which is a more literary way to "get lost."

Cahill writes each essay after hiking a trail. Each is idiosyncratic - - sometimes he talks about people he meets, sometimes wildlife or other sights, and sometimes general issues about Yellowstone. For example, a day hike on Mount Washburn sparks a geology lesson about the park. It also leads to musings about how Cahill's younger self was much too cool to go to any of the obvious tourist attractions in the park, including the trail up Mount Washburn.

He wanders "off topic" in such fashion a lot. For example, his essay on the Norris Geyser Basin was originally prompted by a hike to the basin but ends up discussing the joys of driving the Grand Loop Road. (Talking about driving a road is a bit out of place in a series of books about walking, but there it is.) Other essays concern the history of the park, the geology of geysers, the role of fire in the ecosystem, wheelchair-accessible backcountry campsites, and brief discussions of wildlife from squirrels to wolves.

He also writes about three extended trips in the backcountry. These are closer to trip reports, and describe more of what he and his companions do on these hikes. You don't learn that much about the trails, but you already knew that you should buy a hiking guidebook for that. He does give some Pretty Big Clues about an unnamed waterfall that you could "discover" if you want to. Oh, it's about 30 miles from the trailhead, which might be an obstacle.

The essays are pleasant diversions but none of them really have a big idea or compelling point. The book is also quite short, and could be devoured in an hour or two on the beach - - or, more appropriately, after dinner while visiting Yellowstone. Cahill's a talented writer, so I enjoyed the read but was still hungry after the meal.

5 out of 5 stars Not just another walk in the park.......2006-06-22

Moments after opening the cover, readers are pulled from mundane lives across the globe and transported to one of this world's most fantastic hotspots: Yellowstone National Park. Who better than Tim Cahill to serve as guide and hiking partner?

From a bizarre winking spire in the Hoodoos to falling asleep at a grizzly picnic, Tim never fails to weave a wonderful tale. Included in a selected bookshelf appendix, a list of Yellowstone books of every stripe and shade will enlighten the curious and transform the uninitiated. While you may be disappointed that this book is so quickly over, you won't be let down by its quality.

In defense of Mr. Cahill less than lengthy book, this Crown Journeys offering is just one of an entire series of walking books, all of them brief. I doubt Tim had the option to plow beyond a contracted word count. That's fine with me. If he had given us the natural history of every flower on Mount Washburn, or any other feature in the park, this diminutive read could have easily mutated from a collection of cool essays into a two score set of encyclopedia.

Take it from a guy who has worked in park. This book is a great, albeit brief, introduction to Yellowstone.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful meditation on Yellowstone.......2005-12-23

Cahill's "Lost in My Own Backyard" is a different kind of book: rather than commenting on the sights and smells, the first short essay, entitled "Mount Washburn," describes current theories of the historical development of Yellowstone in terms of a catastrophic volcanic eruption, and observes "we're all just potential puffs of steam anyway, and the earth is might beyond our imagining." The book as a whole most closely resembles a cross between a travel narrative and a guidebook. Though it contains elements of the common guidebook (such as describing specific trails and hikes), the perspective is most often completely different from a standard trail guide. In fact, Cahill includes an appendix of excellent books on Yellowstone (include trail guides) that he considers essential for enjoying the park. I agree; they would be an indispensible addition to Cahill's book for anyone looking to explore the backcountry of the park.
The first half of the book - nine short essays - discuss short to moderate hikes in Yellowstone National Park with a twist: rather than the usual discussion of trail markers, precise distances, and the names of various peaks and viewpoints, Cahill focuses on the geological, thermal and ecological wonder of Yellowstone. His writing is a wonderful blend of humor, meditation on the natural beauties of the park, and half tongue-in-cheek yet deadly serious warnings about the dangers of the park and its wildlife.
The final three essays of the book are longer and discuss backcountry journeys Cahill and some of his neighbors have taken through Yellowstone. These more closely resemble common travel narratives, though they still maintain their guidebook-like feeling at some points.
This book is clearly a winner. Though Cahill frequently protests (in the words of Ferdinand Hayden) that "No language can do justice to the wonderful grandeur and beauty" of Yellowstone, his writing manages to capture something of the spirit of the natural wonders of the park, as well as the adventure of backcountry exploration. His writing is crisp, clear, and not particularly long-winded, which makes it a joyful relaxing read. Be warned: Lost in My Own Backyard may inspire you to go and get lost in America's backyard as well.

      4 out of 5 stars Whimsical Yellowstone.......2005-09-27

Lost in My Own Backyard enhanced my brief stay in Yellowstone. It informed without being heavy-handed and gave me an idea of some of the areas within the park that I know I'll never get to. The realities are expressed with humor, ("Whenever a creature makes an appearance near the road...there will be a traffic jam of hopeless proportions"). Cahill points out some of the sites that are off the beaten track, such as the petrified tree, that can be fun to see. His description of the Artist's Paintpots, however, failed to inspire in real life.
Lost in My Own Backyard doesn't pretend to be a guidebook. It's rather like sitting down with a whimsical uncle and looking at his photo album of Yellowstone National Park.

2 out of 5 stars Nice map, but waaayyy too high level.......2005-08-06

This map looks nice, but if you're going hiking, you'll be better off with the free park maps given at the park. It's just way too high level, with 100-foot contours, and very little detail. It's also not waterproof or resistant.

5 out of 5 stars Essential map for hiking and backpacking.......2004-10-27

This is the essential topographical map for hiking in Yellowstone. Trails Illustrated also sells some maps of particular regions of the park such as Tower/Canyon at 1:83,333 scale. (The map of the whole park is 1:168,500.) The bigger map is perfectly serviceable for any hike that you might want to take, and I can't find any place in the park where the big map would lead you astray. Still, if you like having the smaller scale, go for it.

The small maps do have the advantage of showing specific backcountry campsites. If you use the larger map, you have to coordinate with other books that show these sites.

Like other Trails Illustrated maps, this one comes with all sorts of practical information on the back side of the map. None of this will be new to you if you've read the usual guide books, but it's moderately useful having it repeated here. One very helpful feature of this map is that it shows the burn areas so that you can avoid moderately or heavily burnt forests.

The trail numbers on this map are coordinated with Day Hiking Yellowstone by Tom Carter. I don't have that book so I can't vouch for how useful it is. However, it's easy to coordinate the numbered trails with other books that I do have (such as Lonely Planet Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, Hiking Yellowstone National Park: A Falcon Guide, and A Ranger's Guide to Yellowstone Day Hikes).

        Book Description

Yellowstone National Park is a magnificent area with beautiful, dramatic scenery and incredible hydrothermal features. Within its 2.2 million acres lies some of the earth's greatest natural treasures.

Day Hikes in Yellowstone National Park includes a thorough cross-section of eighty-two hikes throughout this national park. Now in its fourth edition, the guide includes all of the park's most popular hikes as well as a wide assortment of secluded backcountry trails. Many hikes lead to hot springs, bubbling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, and geysers (including Old Faithful) that are predominant throughout the park. Several hikes explore the rim and interior of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, a 1,200 foot deep chasm cut by the Yellowstone River. Highlights include thundering waterfalls, unusual thermal features, expansive meadows, alpine lakes, secluded canyons, and 360-degree vistas of the park. All levels of hiking experience are accommodated, from level boardwalk trails to mountainous treks up to panoramic overlooks.

Each hike includes a detailed map, accurate driving and hiking directions, distance/time/elevation statistics, a list of relevant maps, and summaries to help hikers find a trail appropriate to their ability and desire.

Companion hiking guides include Day Hikes in Grand Teton National Park, Day Hikes Around Bozeman, and Day Hikes in the Beartooth Mountains.
