Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2005-12-13
My wife, 3-year old son and I spent six months in London. We took 4 separate city guides with us, but consistently referred to the Unofficial Guide for the base of our information. Not only did we develop confidence in the recommendations (museums, restaurants, parks, transportation, and even medical assistance), we found the book easy to understand and navigate. I thank Lesley Logan and her publisher for an excellent book.
Thanks for the great guidebook!!.......2004-01-03
London turned out to be one of those places that I really enjoyed....and I believe it was made more enjoyable because we had done some research and planning before going. The Unofficial Guide provided information other than the mainstream stuff you read in all the other books. It added interested pieces of information that made even the planning process a pleasant one.
Careful using the voltage converter recommendation!.......2001-11-09
Page 67 of the book tells you to buy a voltage converter and that the input to the converter should be 110 and output is 220.'
WRONG. The input voltage INTO the converter from the plug is 220 volts, OUTPUT, into the US device, is 110 volts. Be CAREFUL with that recommendation.
Otherwise, a fairly typical unoffical guide - these City guides are useless for restaurants and hotels, there are so many dozens of nice local restaurants and hotels in every city in the world [except NYC which has maybe 20 decent hotels] thast I find you can save ALOT of money and get a nicer place just looking around a little.
As for prices, BE CAREFUL to check prices for things in the USA. PAY in POUNDS and use a credit card- example is the Heathrow-London train - EurRail Same thing applies to London tube, ...
Also, use your credit card to get cash in London, even with charges for cash advances and interest for a month, you'll save on getting ripped off at airport currency bootths or banks, esp. in the USA.
Great guide!.......2001-02-09
I just purchased this book after checking out 10 different London guide books at the library. This was by far my favorite! I have never been to London before and this has been the most helpful book I have used in planning my trip. It provides the very basic information, such as what line is the correct line at customs and currency information. Additionaly, it has tons of info, such as the exact cost of an attraction, restaurant, or hotel (no vague words or symbols), nearest tube stop, what time of day to go to the site to avoid crowds, lots of insider tips (ie. to avoid lengthy security checks, leave your bags homes when visiting Houses of Parliament), and approx time you should allow to see the site (I couldn't find this info in any other book and I was specifically looking for this tidbit). It also has ratings of appeal for each age group in addition to the authors own personal rating. For example, for Site X, it might give it 2 stars for preschooler, 2 stars for grade school, 3 stars for teens, 3 stars for young adults, 4 stars for adults over 30, and 4 stars for seniors. This is perfect for family planning. There are two minor reasons I did not give this book 5 stars: the author uses its own "zone" system (zones 1-12) to group together attractions, hotels, etc. This might work perfect for other cities and is a good idea, but since London has its own official Zone system for public transportation, this can be confusing for London firsttimers like myself who are still trying to figure out London's transportation system...you have to constantly remember when the author says zone 2, he doesn't mean London's official Zone 2. I wish the author had chosen a different word than "zone" for his own groupings. Also, I could not find any info about the changing of the guards nor about the Horse Guards (perhaps I just missed it?). No tourist guide book can be considered complete without this information. Nonetheless, this is my favorite guide book thus far and will definetly be with me on my trip to London in a few weeks.
A literate travel guide!.......2000-06-17
This book is worth the price of admission just for the History of London section. Wittily scribed, with a great - and fun - sense of place. Logan's style is breezy, economical, yet thorough. Three Cheerios for this London Guide written by a Yank!

Review.......2007-07-21
This is a fantastic book. I don't know where to begin. It tells the whole story of Apple and gives us a lot of info on the business/Apple side of the group. It is presented as interesting stories, and there are a lot of quotes from those involved. I have read a few hundred Beatle books, and this is in my top 5. If you want to hear about the music, though, the book will not be of much interest to you. This is about the business of Apple.
Required Reading for Fab Fanatics.......2007-01-29
This is a fantastic book. Detailed, well-researched and filled with the kind of arcana that this life-long Beatle fan loves. This is a history of the Apple Organization from its inception to today. It follows the careers of Apple employees, the few artists that were signed to the Apple record label, those signed to Apple music publishing and, of course, Beatles are found throughout. Based on research, but the author also conducted interviews with still living Apple staffers, artists, etc. Fascinating.

Customer Reviews:
Great for London.......2007-07-14
Unofficial Guides are usually very well written and helpful and this one is no exception. The book starts off with some basic information on traveling to England (when to go, how to get deals, etc.) before moving on to more specific information for various geographic areas of England. The most extensive coverage is reserved for London, which is probably wise since most tourists will certainly focus their stay around that magnificent city. Other places of interest are covered as well with all the usual suspects (Bath, Stratford-upon-Avon, Stonehenge, Cotswolds, etc.) all covered reasonably well. The writing is clear and concise and the book is well organized. It is a very solid entry and useful guide for visiting England.
Having given the book its due, it is not the best guide to England as a whole. I used this book as well as Frommer's extensively while planning my trip and must say that Frommer's does a better job of covering the country as a whole. This is largely due to the fact that the Frommer's guide is a whopping 300 pages longer and every bit of that goes into describing various parts of the country. It is worth noting that if your trip will be limited to London and the surrounding area then the Unofficial Guide is a worthy choice as I actually preferred it's format and information for the city to the Frommer's book.
In summary, this is a quality book but if you truly plan to explore beyond London then I would recommend purchasing the Frommer's England guide first. The Unofficial Guide was the best I found on London itself and I can recommend it without reserve if you limit your trip to the city. Another worth while purchase is the Eyewitness Guide which has fairly sparse information on specifics but with all its color photos and maps, is unparalleled at giving you a sense of a place to help decide if a specific location is worth visiting.
Book Description
Here is the lowdown on 255 hostels in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Whether you're looking to party or just looking for a clean, quiet, affordable place to crash, this guide will get you exactly where you want to go. The author tells it like it is with his at-a-glance rating system and candid descriptions. Entries include his opinions on cleanliness, safety, hospitality, party potential, best bet for a bite, the hostel's "gestalt," and what to see and do in the area. He'll also tell you how to get there using your own feet or wheels, or by public transportation.
Customer Reviews:
Maybe great once, but not anymore.......2004-05-04
This book meant well, but we set out for Ireland this last March and found it to be horrendously out of date. We found ourselves lost for three hours in the center of Limerick searching for the hostels listed, only to find out they had all gone out of business. It also calls for bringing your own linens -- all hostels in Ireland now provide a blanket, sheets, and pillow. Pretty much the only linen under your own discretion is a towel. The beginning section is good for learning the base facts behind hostels, but it's still no longer a book to be trusted anymore... At least until a new edition comes out.
Great accomadation guide.......2003-11-06
The second edition continues in the fine tradition of the first.Ireland, like New Zealand and unlike the UK, has a lot of private backpacker hostels as well as the official Youth Hostels. So a seasoned traveler needs a guide like this and not just the YHA handbook.Commercial Web sites on hostels often rave about the huge "free" breckfasts some may offer, but omit to mention a hostel has no self catering kitchen. So you have the added cost of having to eat dinner out. This book is really good on saying what the catering facilities are like.Places like Dublin, Galway and Belfast have a LOT of hostels and picking one that is not a dud or miles from the pubs is important. This guide sifts through all the hostels of the big cities and gives a few hot picks on the best of the bunch. In the above 3 mentioned cities in my experience of staying there, the picks were spot on.
Hostels Ireland.......2000-05-10
Paul Karr has done his homework and he receives an A+ for the information in his Hostels Ireland book. My wife and I spent 7 weeks treking Ireland summer '99 and found his book to be invaluable. The information was clear, concise and accurate. Things change and so do hostels and some hostels he recommended we liked better than others. But we did not stay any where we disliked or felt the information in the book had misled us. Hostel Ireland was our bible and served us well. It was our "Lonely Planet" for where to stay. He did a great job and I'm looking forward to any future editions.
I'll have to write another review when I get back!.......1999-08-22
I leave for Ireland in 10 days for a 2 week stay. This book was invaluable in planning my trip and I'm sure has cut down on the expenses. I was able to read it in one night and quickly scanning the reviews was made simple by clever icons giving each hostel the thumbs up, thumbs done, a cleanliness factor, party index, and general brief review.
Excellent, up-to-date descriptions, ratings are questionable.......1999-07-12
Paul Karr offers a comprehensive, honest, regional survey of the best hostels in Ireland. I had the opportunity to stay in four of them recently and I disagree with the ratings that he presents, espe cially in the section "Paul's Picks". Both the Old School House Hostel in Dun Laoghaire and the Bru Hostel on Inisheer Island were average, uninspired hostels, adequate, but certainly not worthy of special attention. I did, however, stay in 2 other hostels which were rated "thumbs up" and found them to be wonderful - clean, friendly, spacious and fun. They are the Old Mill Hostel in Westport and the Aille River Hostel in Doolin. I would not have had the pleasure of staying in either of these without the help of this book. Thanks, Paul!

Correction to author bio.......2000-06-27
I'm not writing to review this book, I'm writing to correct an error in the author's bio (The "corrections" section of your website did not have a space for this, so I'm doing it here). Joe Passov is the former editor of LINKS Magazine, not the current editor. Please do not post this message, just make sure the correction is made. Thank you.
Finally!.......2000-06-18
Finally a travel guidebook that offers something other than meaningless fluff! Passov is a great storyteller who relates what's its really like to play some of the best golf courses in the eastern U.S. You'll want to clean the grass off your shoes after browsing the chapters. In addition to honest and informed opinions on the golf courses, Passov also provides an encyclopedic amount of information on resorts, restaurants, and other activities in the vicinity of the golf courses. If all guidebooks were this breezily written, entertaining, and full of hardore travel info, you'd never have a bad vacation or a disappointing round of golf. My only hope is that Passov will cover the rest of the country-- and the world-- soon so I know where to go next for a great golf vacation.
