Don't go to Disneyland without it!.......2007-09-24
I love the whole "Unofficial Guide" series and always buy it before I vacation. The Guide to Disneyland doesn't disappoint with wonderful insights about the attraction. I especially love their touring plans and count on them when I go to a Disney park. Don't go to a Disney attraction without these!
Useful.......2007-08-22
I live near the park, I have an annual pass, and I've been going on and off since I was 3. I'm well acquainted with the place I think, but I actually kind of freak out a bit when confronted with out of town friends who want me to show them around. Because that's an entirely different set of goals for a trip, particularly if they're traveling from far away and only have one day.
In an effort not to turn into Mike Griswold I got this book. Because as often as I go, I go to relax and socialize with my friends who also have APs, not to do research. The book has all of the information I had hoped for and then some. (I didn't know I wanted a "Small Child Fright Potential Chart" until I had one!) Traffic patterns, average wait times, ride length, and best of all are the suggested touring plans. (Which are good for those times I say to my day tripping friends "Okay, is there anything you just GOTTA ride or see?" and they respond with blank stares and shrugs.)
The writer has a good sense of humor and presents the information in a casual way gets the point across... I don't like the art though... The little cartoons sprinkled throughout are amusing but the style is kind of creepy. That's the worst thing I can say about it though.
Obviously, the book is more useful for travelers, but if you're a local who has some people coming in for a visit? This book is your friend too.
The Unofficial Guide - DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!.......2007-07-27
For every vacation we have ever taken I have purchased one of these books (Disneyland, Las Vegas, Best RV & Tent Campgrounds, etc.). That is a testimony unto itself. Reason being is that they are so full of valuable time saving, money saving, information-rich information.
The Disneyland guide told us to get to the park at least an hour before they open and get in line. With older kids/young teens it said to plan to dash to the "big" rides right out of the gate. It tipped us off on the value of the fast passes and how all that works. The first time we showed up for our time slot to ride a ride that we had a fast pass for and got to walk past the enormous lines of people to a line with a wait of maybe 5 or 10 minutes and then got to ride the ride like we were VIPs or something, WOW!!! That was awesome. The book informed us of the best and worst times of year to visit the park, and the best and worst times of day. It rated the food value and quality at all the venues, and gave us tips on how to save money on drinks and snacks.
I gotta tell ya, don't do Disneyland without this book. Read it cover to cover before you leave home, earmark the pages and make notes, and be stunned at how right on that information was. Bon Voyage!
Excelent guide........2007-07-19
Very detailed description of the attractions and the touring plans. The version we used in Orlando worked very well and we are hoping the same results in Disneyland by next week.
Good, but somewhat disappointing.......2007-07-11
The book is very useful, but after having read the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World by the same author, I was disappointed in this book. It lacked a lot of the information that I found most useful in the Disney World book, crowd calendar, best rooms in each hotel, hotel room floor plans, and ratio of kids to characters at the various character meals. I sure do hope the next edition adds this information to bring it up to the extraordinary level of the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, which I highly recommend.

Thomas Guide is the best in maps, but the disk that is included will not work with the new Vista operating system.

San Francisco Guide .......2007-03-23
It is a useful book since it gives you very good maps and details.
Great book!!!.......2007-03-09
After reading the book from cover to cover, I feel like I am now an expert on San Francisco! We have been there before, but are looking forward to exploring (next month)areas of SF that we haven't been to yet. The in depth reporting, and mapping, of all areas of the city will make it a breeze to get around in. It was a good idea for them to put a fold out map in the book as well. Can't wait to go!

There are plenty of wine travel books on the market, but what makes CALIFORNIA WINE COUNTRY special is several attributes. First, a coat-pocket-sized appearance with a hard cover lends to take-along tote and easy consultation, especially the numerous maps and charts with display the latest wine country wineries, hotels, restaurants and more. California Wine Country: A Sunset Field Guide.......2007-05-14
Ordered this book as a gift and received it just before we were heading for visit to California. We decided to keep it and use it for ourselves. We visited areas "off the beaten path" and were delighted to visit some of the wineries highlighted and to find others on our own. Would have liked maps to have given greater detail, but that would be our only quibble.

A Great Resource.......2007-05-15
DK Eyewitness travel books are some of the best on the market. You can glean more information from one of their books than you can from reading several offerings from their competitors. The full-color visuals, the detailed maps, and the interesting side-bars all add up to making this guide a perfect companion when planning a trip. If you're actually going on vacation, or simply dreaming of far-away places, this is the travel series for you.
This has been needed.......2006-12-17
Northern California has needed its own travel book from Eyewitness and this is just the edition I was hoping for. San Francisco has lots of fun places to visit and they are all here. I like that it explains elsewhere to go in the state. If you are looking for a cultural city and a fun camping trip this is the perfect book to buy.
Don't leave home without it.......2006-08-24
I have just returned from my sixth trip to San Francisco and used this particular guide for the last three. The detailed pictures helped me find new treasures, the info on transportation has saved me the cost of the guide many times over. I've used this to locate both child friendly activites and also intriguing adult adventures - different trips. This book is very well organized, beautifully illustrated and so packed with information it will take several more trips before I exhaust all it's possibilities.
I absolutely love this series of travel guides. When you first start thinking about a travel destination buy the book from this series, use it to plan your trip, take it along to guide you along the way and then bring it home to reminisce about your adventure. These guides are thorough, giving an overview of the history, climate etc as well as detailed information about food and lodging. The series is NOT updated as often as some others but up-to-date info in particulars are readily available elsewhere (other guides, both purchased and local freebies, and the internet). The pictures are a plus for locating things, detailed info about local food, transportation etc is very helpful.
The only drawbacks to this series are that the books tend to be rather heavy and the need to confirm some of the info.
Excellent Source!.......2006-01-19
The Eyewitness Travel Guide Series are by far the best references for the traveler who wants to know everything from history to practical information. I particularly enjoy knowing what types of foods/restaurants to try when I'm visiting a city and this guide certainly does a nice job detailing restaurants, food, and drink. The pictures in this guide are fantastic! A great souvenir to have after your vacation so you can look back and relive your trip!
San Francisco Eyewitness Guides.......2005-09-26
Great Pictures. Info was out of date. Reviews were not helpful and did not include enough information.
I also had Frommer's guide to use but not up to date or helpful either.
I might try an eyewitness guide again - but not sure since info was not current. Again Great Pictures.

Just used the book for a road trip up the PCH. I found the book very useful, with great info, recommendations and maps. The book is also the perfect size. It can fit in a pocket, so you can carry it with you without declaring to the world that you are a tourist.
Lonely Planet Road Trip California Highway 1 (Road Trip Guides).......2007-01-12

Very good if you are visiting San Diego for the first time.......2007-07-16
Very good tips for my first trip to San Diego, has a lot of specific information about what you can do, even for a short period or a more time frame. The recomendations are from a person that lived in San Diego, so I think that gives a more realistici opinion. It includes a map that is easy to use and very helpfull.

Zagat 2007 Los Angeles/Southern California Restaurants .......2007-09-21
Gives you everything you want to know about places to eat in L.A. I'll probably pick up versions for other cities that I travel to.
Helpful - actually it makes me hungry ;-).......2006-12-14
Choc-full of great information, Zagat once again shows the best and the worst of so many different types of eateries in the greater LA. From The Abbey right through to Zucca Ristorante it goes alphabetically through some great sounding places. Many I've been to and the reviewers are accurate more times than not, so this is a book I think you can trust. It includes websites for the restaurants and it includes prices and even eateries in Palm Springs, Orange County and Santa Barbara etc. It's easy to follow and there is practically something in here for everyone. I mean EVERYONE. From all types of cuisines in all price brackets. It's a great guide that gives you a little insight into new places to try or just your old favourites. I highly recommend this great book.

Perfect for California travel.......2007-08-06
Gives you just enough detail one needs to travel within California. Greater detail for metros and not so much for long streches of freeways. I have been using it for years. I had to buy the new one with the latest updates. Do like the new spiral binding as well.
not bad.......2007-07-07
I had a little trouble reading this atlas at first but once I got a hang of it it was pretty good.
Super.......2007-05-12
This atlas gets the job done. Lacks fine enough detail to be your only map throughout California, but helps cover any significant distance. Attractive cartography, fairly well organized.
Great California road atlas; Highly useful.......2007-01-24
The Thomas Guide Calfornia Road Atlas is a great tool if you don't own a GPS navigation system in your vehicle. Very easy to transfer from a highway view to metro view to detailed view of a particular area using the number coded system. The Thomas Guide has highlighted the scenic routes and highways, which is a plus. This road atlas is not overly large in dimension so you can easily open the book just by sitting in your vehicle.
Good statewide maps.......2006-11-05
This covers all the major highways in the state and has detailed city-level maps on certain cities such as San Francisco but not necessarily the city you need.
