5 out of 5 stars A wonderful sequel........2007-06-16

This story continues the sad but beautiful journey of Pei. A chinese silk worker. I love any story that takes you into someone's heart. This story does just that. Gail Tsukiyama is a wonderful writer.

5 out of 5 stars The Language of Threads.......2007-02-07

You need to read Women of Silk first, and you will love this book. It is easy reading and Gail Tsukiyama is a wonderful story teller.

4 out of 5 stars The Language of Threads: A Novel.......2006-07-12

This is a wonderful sequel to "Women of the Silk". I thoroughly enjoyed the continuing story and the characters, both the old ones and the new ones.
I think the timeline is a very interesting part of World history. I would love to see these books made into a movie.

2 out of 5 stars The Language of Threads: A Novel.......2005-07-07

This was a less than stellar sequal to The Women of the Silk but it did finish the story of Pei to some extent. I found the historical aspect of the novel the most interesting and the story of the women the least believable

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first!.......2004-03-18

Although "Women of the Silk" was one of the best books Gail Tsukiyama wrote, I would have to say that her sequel was more appealing than the first. Pei is once again on her own, having to leave the silk factory, and has an orphan named Ji Shen. Pei lost her best friend Jin, who left them a job in Hong Kong. Pei had many jobs while the Japanese stormed into China, destroying homes and villages. Pei managed to survive the bombings and having to lose so many friends, including the orphan Ji Shen. Pei's will to survive and living life to the fullest was what made this book so inspiring.

Book Description

A memoir by the acclaimed novelist The Wall Street Journal called "blessed with a sense of history, a feeling for place, an observant eye for detail, and an elegant no-frills style."

In their particulars, the Lanchesters were not Every Family. The father was an international banker, the mother a former nun. Yet in the dynamic of family life, their patterns are instantly recognizable. The heart of that dynamic is a built-in tug-of-war: to a young child, a sense of loving protection becomes, as he matures, a set of barriers to be overcome. In his richly told story, John Lanchester brings this dynamic to life, and in the process makes us think about our own family story and about the legacy-emotional, social, intellectual-our parents pass on to us, generation to generation, the bitter with the best.

It was only when his mother died that Lanchester realized how little he really knew his parents. That, too, is in the nature of families: parents keep secrets from their children, and children are happy to acquiesce, not wanting to disturb their universe. But with Julie Lanchester's death-and the cache of papers and letters she left behind-Lanchester set out to reconstruct just who his parents had been. In doing so, he gained extraordinary insight into his own nature, and a deeper understanding of theirs. And because he has the wisdom to see the universal aspects of his story, Family Romance resonates for anyone who has ever felt the push-pull of family love.

Part detective work, part remarkable evocation of character, Family Romance is, above all, compelling storytelling.

5 out of 5 stars A Complex, Enlightening and Generally Superb Journey.......2007-10-13

Most families have secrets. Sometimes those secrets are held BY family members; other times they are held FROM family members. And sometimes a bit of both. John Lanchester explores the circumstances and consequences of these dynamics in this genuinely wonderful book.
He begins with his grandparents, and takes us on a complicated journey through the generations that followed. The geography of the book is broad and interesting in itself - Africa, Ireland, England, Australia, Burma, even Brunei, and - perhaps especially - Hong Kong.
Lanchester tells his mother's story, then his father's, and then the story of their marriage and his childhood. It is as interesting for the things he didn't know about and/or took for granted as it is for the chronology and analysis of his early life.
We know from the book's jacket that his mother took on a new identity after leaving the convent. The ease with which she managed this early case of identity theft is staggering and, in an odd way, admirable.
However, there was for me a major twist as the story developed; it involves Lanchester himself, and the struggles he has had coming to terms with life, with writing and just being in the world. I found his story intensely moving and honest - almost a story within the story, but still fitting the overall context.
By chance, I read this book while on holiday, and the other book I read was Bill Bryson's memoir, "Life & Times of the Thunderbolt Kid." Bryson announces that "growing up was easy. It required no thought or effort on my part." This is a long way from the experience of John Lanchester, and while Bryson is a witty jotter, Lanchester is a deeply insightful and (yet?) very readable author.
Fans of his fiction will love Family Romance, and new readers will warm to him very quickly. I hope he gives us more of himself in the years ahead.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good overall but too heavy for travelers.......2007-04-12

If you're looking for a book with good background information and history lessons this is the one for you. It is not the book to take to walk around the city with. It is simply too heavy. Your best bet is to just cut out the walking maps to take with you before leaving your hotel room. I liked the little walking tour of the bird market, flower market and fish market in Kowloon. As far as the restaurant recommendations are concerned...don't bother looking at the book. Most of the listings are somewhat expensive by local standard and don't offer the best food. All you have to do to find a good meal is to walk around and go to one that's packed with locals. Restaurants are everywhere and most of them open until the wee hours of the morning. There's no fear of not getting good food in Hong Kong. Go ahead, try something you can't find at home.

5 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Hong Kong & Macau .......2007-01-05

This book gives ou a nice overview of the region, and incredible specific tips for visiting HK and Macau.

4 out of 5 stars Good overall guidebook..........2006-04-16

I found this book to be extremely helpful in covering all the bases of transport, taxes, tipping, typical business hours, history, background, and a good overview of what's where, and how to get there. Often times, we'd have questions about things like poverty level, health coverage, average income, quality of water -- and found that the guide pretty much answered all of those, and more.

The maps aren't super, and because of the size of the book, it made it difficult to carry. Besides, if you're asking a local for directions, you'd want a bilingual map, as the English names of cities/stations drive them crazy. (ie, Mandarin romanizations in a Cantonese city) I do give it credit for accurately pointing out the numerous obscure markets in Tsim Sha Tsui, as well as the various shops in Hong Kong City. The walking guides were surprisingly useful.

The reason why I give it 4 stars is because HK is all about food and shopping, and the book came up seriously short on the food portion. (no pun intended) Despite it being only 3 months since publication (12th edition, Jan 2006) literally *every* restaurant this book recommended (of which we attempted to find) turned out to be non-existent, had changed ownership and had turned into some other shop. I attribute some of this to bad luck, but I seriously doubt the restaurants didn't *all* go out of business in the last 3 months, but rather that the information on the guide was a little outdated.

The section on food is one part I really relied upon to book to help me out, and was pretty disappointed when it didn't come through for me, as the alternatives to an English guidebook aren't great. The alternatives are to ask the hotel clerk (who will recommend the hotel restaurant), or a random stranger (who will recommend his friend/family's restaurant), or read a weekly magazine about which eateries are good (which require Chinese reading skills).

Despite my frugal 4 stars, this guide is considerably better than most, and is worth the small change to purchase, especially when compared to the amount of money you spent to book your vacation.

4 out of 5 stars Great Guide!.......2005-09-25

This was the first time I bought a travel book from Lonely Planet. I loved it because it provides a historical as well as a modern background on the cities being visited. The recommendations for dinner, site-seeting, etc were great! The only thing I would've added is a rating of the top sites to see if you are only in the city for a short time.

3 out of 5 stars Injustice!.......2005-01-15

This LP guide is a pretty good guide to HK and Macau. Being a foodie, I think their food guide section does not do HK's gastronomical scene justice! Beautiful food galore on the islands and LP can't even manage to cover half of that wonder. Oh well ;) Otherwise, it is quite a comprehensive guide to what's there to see around HK and Macau.

Book Description

Inside of Hong Kong lies the infamous Walled City. Strangers are not welcome there. Police hesitate to enter. It is a haven of filth, crime and sin. Prostitution, pornography and drug addiction flourish. Thirthy thousand people-maybe twice that-live in a few cramped, dismal acres. Jackie Pullinger had grown up believing that if she put her trust in God, He would lead her. When she was 20 years old, God called her to the Walled City. She obeyed. And as she spoke of Jesus Christ, brutal hoods were converted, prostitutes retired from their trade, and heroin junkies found new power that freed them from the bondage of drug addiction. Hundreds discovered new life in Christ. Chasing the Dragon tells the whole amazing story-exactly as it happened.

My wife and I could not put this book down as we read it together. It is filled with excitement as the author battles against opium and drug abuse as well as every other kind of demonic evil. In every case, she wins the battle for the souls, minds, bodies and spirits of men and women in Hong Kong. There is one victory after another as men and women are set free by the power of God's Holy Spirit. We highly recommend this book for those seeking release from drugs, alcohol and demonic bondage.
Sincerely, Rev. Richard and Holly Lang

The testimony of Jackie Pullinger, and her life among the poor and addicted in Hong Kong. This is a reality to be in touch with.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! What a God! What a Jesus! What a Holy Spirit! What a woman!.......2006-10-28

Finally, a woman follows Jesus with ALL her heart. Then, she lets Him teach her how to win the desperate and depraved that she has been trying to do without the power of the Holy Spirit. She receives the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, follows advice to pray in tounges 15 minutes a day and miracles start happening. She has lived by the Lord leading her already, but now she shifts into high speed Holy Spirit action. Mostly boys and men are saved, delivered from (Satan's kindom into The Kindom of God,) are baptized (in the sea,) and are given a prayer language, usually immediately upon conversion. Then follows healing and deliverance from herion and opium addictions through prayer. She is often catnapping in buses and on ferries because she is available day and night to help these guys. She helps many women too, but it is men whom she really has an impact with.
Well, the story is so amazing everyone should read it.

5 out of 5 stars Passion Du Jour.......2006-08-05

This book is a heart-wrenching rollercoaster that challenged me to live more passionately. If anyone ever tells you that God is not real or he doesn't care about humanity...refer them to this book. Jackie's life is living proof that we have a loving and living God. Be careful...it will wreck your Western Culture!

4 out of 5 stars Faith in Action.......2005-12-28

Every once in a while there is a person that is willing to step out in complete faith. Jackie Pullinger is one of these people. Leaving her homeland of England, Ms. Pullinger embarks on a journey of faith that lands her in Hong Kong with just 'three days' worth of money. But it is not in her money that Jackie has put her faith, rather her book reveals the processes that taught her to place it firmly in Jesus Christ and nowhere else.

The hindsight record in her book tells of what appears to begin as a stumbling to find her place and ministry, really was Jesus directing her steps. Ms. Pullinger learns to pray, trust and live out her faith in one of the worlds toughest environments. Surrounded by prostitutes, drug addicts and forgotten people she testifies of a Savior who can set the captives free. Her story is the testimony of life after life that is set free. The results she witnesses astounds all involved including police, the courts, the addicts and prostitutes themselves, fellow Christian workers and the reader.

Ms. Pullinger's account is compelling and remarkable. The reader will find many points to be challenged and encouraged in their own spiritual journey. The reader may also be challenged by her methods and practices, some of which would be considered unorthodox and dangerous to one's spiritual walk. Jackie Pullinger is a pioneer. Her willingness to put her money/life where her faith is and walk the talk has paid in ewards that leave much to rejoice over.

4 out of 5 stars Good Little Book.......2005-10-03

Pretty good little book for first time travelers. I bought this book and took it with me when I was in Hong Kong last month. You can just throw in your backpack while in Hong Kong and use it when needed.

3 out of 5 stars Bad attitude ruins the book.......2004-10-04

This book would have gotten 4 or 4.5 stars, if not for the negative attitude that the writers display when writing about Hong Kong's various attractions. "Act impressed"? Gee, thanks for that advice. How Lonely Planet. It's a nice book, unfortunately ruined by the tone, which sounds like it was written by a bunch of bored expats who mainly sit around in bars and binge drink. If you want to buy this, then be prepared for the bad vibes this book gives off, and please do not let it ruin a wonderful experience in Hong Kong.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Eyewitness Travel Guide.......2004-08-25

I swear by DK Eyewitness guides. Not only for pre-trip planning...but for use on location. Both domestic and international (own the typical...Italy, France, etc).

For my China / Hong Kong trip, I am disappointed that a guide for China is not available. However....the "top ten" version makes up partially for my loss.

The top ten guide provides a very focused tutorial for my 3 day stay. Allows me to strategically have the best use of my time and help me understand the less obvious. Not only descriptive...but pictorially.

I plan to buy more "top ten" guides.

For my mainland China guide...I bought the National Geograpic Traveler China guide. The next best thing to the DK Eyewitness series. Highly recommended... Nat'l Geo quality with a hint of DK.

2 out of 5 stars Content 5 stars; binding zero stars.......2007-09-08

I hate to do this, but other buyers should be aware: I have the July 2005 printing (paperback; the only one available from Amazon) and it has the absolute cheapest, flimsiest glue binding I have ever seen on a book. The cover became detached before I was done looking through it the first time, and now that I have looked through it exactly once, the page sections are starting to fall away from the remaining glue strip. And I am being very careful with it. What a disappointment as the photos are stunning, the text and interviews fascinating, and the quality of the photo pages themselves excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Mindblowing story and amazing pictures. .......2007-07-05

This book tells a story of a place most people have never heard of and no longer exists, but was the most densely populated place in the entire world at one point. It does it by well-written text, interviews with people that lived in this one-of-a-kind place, and priceless pictures. Google "The walled city of Kowloon", read up on it, and you won't be able to resist getting this book.

5 out of 5 stars important book.......2007-03-19

the book offers great insight in the extreme circumstances under which people lived in the kowloon walled city. superb photografic material covering a wide aspect of the city and relevant text. a must for people interested in urban vernacular architecture.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever seen!.......2006-03-04

Everyone who I have ever shown this book to has had a deep reaction to it. I wouldn't handicap this book by calling it a photography book alone, although the photos are very powerful and prominent, but the text deserves recognition aswell. Plenty of personal stories of how people made this decaying city their home. Both epic and intimate. A testament of the human animal's ability to adapt and thrive. Thank god the authors got in to Kowloon before its destruction to create this book.

Also, as a side note: Any artist wanting reference material for decaying urban sprawl, look no further. This book makes for great city or science fiction reference, with unbelievable details (electrical boxes, pipes, hallways, stairwells, etc...)

I was born in Hong Kong and lived in the Walled City for 2 years with my mother when I was 10. Love the photos, history, and facts about the walled city, bring back lots of memories.

Book Description

Since the 1970s, Hong Kong has been home to arguably the world's most energetic, imaginative mass-market film industry. At its peak, it surpassed nearly all Western countries in number of films released, ruled the East Asian market, and produced movies (ranging from John Woo's action pictures to the comic adventures of Jackie Chan) that have thrilled global audiences and attained cult status in the West. This book offers a deeply informed and highly engaging look at how Hong Kong cinema has become one of the success stories of film history, and how it has influenced international film culture and the development of film as a medium. As sentimental and outrageous as Hong Kong films can be, David Bordwell demonstrates that they are not merely crowd-pleasing; they harbor remarkable inventiveness and careful craftsmanship and in many cases rise to the level of a rich and delightful art. Bordwell surveys the historical conditions that fueled the rise of this cinema: the high output, shrewd entrepreneurship, changing world tastes, and a unique skill in action genres that cross cultural boundaries. Considering both the movies themselves and the bigger picture, he moves from deft and detailed analyses of many classics of this tradition to a broader assessment of the basic strategies and impulses of mass entertainment.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A serious look at the Hong Kong film industry.......2004-04-14

Since John Woo and Jackie Chan hit it big in North America, there have been a ton of books on the Hong Kong film industry. Most of them are either poorly written or poorly presented. Or, worst of all, only focus on the figures (Woo & Chan) that people here in North America would recognized.

Bordwell's book is a significant improvement as he goes into great detail on the origins of the HK film industry (painstakingly documenting the rise of the Shaw brothers) and examines how it rose to prominence. This is a very well-written book that straddles the line between being an academic study and utilizing a more mainstream approach. It's a good mix that will keep you interested. I did find some of the economical stuff to be a bit on the dull side but it is few and far between.

Best of all, Bordwell covers all the usual suspects (i.e. Woo, Chan, Wong Kar-Wai) and others as well. This is a great introduction into Hong Kong films, what makes them work and why they've become so popular world-wide.

Bordwell is obviously a fan but he is also critical as well. This is not a fawning love letter by some slobbering fanboy but a sobering account of HK films. The man has obviously done his homework. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Best popular-film book ever?.......2002-09-03

Not just the best book about Hong Kong cinema but the best ever written about a popular commercial movie industry. It is a model of practicality, fresh observation, and original on-site research in an academic field dominated by received ideology and sociological condescension. Bordwell pays tribute to the highly specialized film craftsmen of Kowloon, world-class experts in delivering intense pleasure to a large audience. We hope that he plans to write many sequels. Are you ready for "Planet Bollywood"?

5 out of 5 stars The best book on Hong Kong cinema yet.......2001-08-04

For the history of Hong Kong cinema, Stephen Teo's HONG KONG CINEMA : THE EXTRA DIMENSION can't be topped; but this impressive book is far and away the best yet to examine this vital art film from the aesthetic angle. Bordwell also covers some of the financial makeup of the Hong Kong film industry, and even devotes space to the often-ridiculed Wong Jing. His chapters on Hong Kong editing styles are not just informative, they're absolutely inspiring. This book should be required reading for every film student!

5 out of 5 stars Insightful, original, accessible.......2001-07-16

Bordwell's book manages to balance the enthusiasm of a fan with the sharp analysis of a trained film scholar. Of all the books on Hong Kong film in English that I've read, this is the one that I keep returning to--it's chock full of original criticism (his shot by shot breakdowns of classic HK flicks are superb), that is well written and accessible (even if you don't have a PhD in cultural studies). Planet Hong Kong has led me to at least a dozen wonderful films I might otherwise have overlooked.

4 out of 5 stars Great work with limitations.......2001-07-15

A great book about HK film. A detailed and convincing analysis of the technical aspect of HK movies and of what makes them good. Bordwell is limited, however, by his not knowing the language and the culture. But this seems to be very common among film critics, who mostly just rely on subtitles. For European movies this may not be a problem, but for Hong Kong movies that often have such comically and memorably bad subtitles, it's a great disadvantage to the critic.

      Book Description

The relocation of Shanghai cotton mills to Hong Kong after the founding of the People's Republic in 1949 was an event of major significance for Hong Kong's postwar economy. Focusing on the relationship between ethnicity and entrepreneurship, this book is a major contribution to the
understanding of industrial management, in general, and the Chinese industrial base in Hong Kong in particular.

4 out of 5 stars Handy and complete.......2006-06-12

Just got back from a quick jump over to HK and Macau for business and I brought this book along. Contrary to some other readers reviews, I found the book absolutely invaluable! The walking tours were quite insightful and with good directions and time estimates -I never got lost. Some of my most memorable experiences were from the walking tours in HK. The information was accurate and concise. It provided everything I needed to know about getting to the outlying islands on my free day, getting to the airport and getting around town. Nightlife recommendations were great for the foreign visitor on business. I compared the recommendations to that in Lonely Planet and my own experience and I thought the Frommer's was a lot more true to the scene than Lonely Planet. I didn't run into any snags while using the Frommer's book. I also took a side trip to Macau with the book and had a great time. Info was accurate, although the maps a little inadequate, but nothing a quick stop into the tourist office couldn't solve. I'd highly recommend the book and I'd pass it along to any colleagues or friends who might be going to HK since it never failed me once.

      2 out of 5 stars Woefully Inadequate.......2003-12-05

If there is a hell for travel writers, I hope Beth Reiber will burn in it. The useful information in this book could be condensed into a postage stamp size guide: One good Dim Sum Restaurant, one good Macanese Restaurant and one walk in The Western District. I recently traveled with this book to Hong Kong. I had a Hong Kong resident as a companion and still got lost using this book. Ms. Reiber recommends a walking tour of Kowloon, but does not bother to place the last four destinations on the included map. Nor does she say that you will encounter two rivers of humanity flowing in both directions that will turn a fifteen minute walk into a half hour hike. It is easier for salmon to swim upstream to spawn than it is to find the Bird Market in Kowloon. She also recommends a Kowloon park that is not even on the visitor map! (Just hop on the bus, she says. It stops across from the park. Hah!) We took the bus to Stanley after seeing Victoria Peak. The bus ride is interesting but time consuming. First time travelers on a three day holiday will never be able to complete her suggested three day tour. Taxis speed things up at night, but get snarled in traffic during the day. I was there six days and saw most of the things on her list, including a side trip to Macao, but only by the grace of God did my Hong Kong friend and I find the ruins of Saint Paul's Cathedral, so inadequate were the included maps. As for the unnecessary words: Anyone can walk into a four star hotel and find a great restaurant. If you follow Ms. Reiber's restaurant suggestions you'll be eating either Very Expensive or Expensive (her categories) most of the time. If you like to shop, which I do not, I'm sure you'll find Ms. Reiber's book helpful; she drags you through every major complex of shops on her walking tours. Rick Steves she ain't. So if you are planning a trip to Hong Kong you can buy this book, but get some good maps as a supplement and draw out your routes in advance. A few things Ms. Reiber doesn't mention: The locals seem to think that tea is a disinfectant for chop sticks and soup spoons. Bring a pack of Kleenex with you to a neighborhood restaurant, because napkins are not provided. And forget about breathing clean air while you are in Hong Kong. However, the city is full of delights and I intend to return, now that I know my way around.

1 out of 5 stars This book is not updated. Many names dont exist any more........2001-11-24

What have the frommers done is Just duplicating the old edition with a new name. This so called 2001 edition " frommer's hong kong 6th eddition" has so many names I could not look up on the internet mainly because they were sold to another company with a different name. The air lines they suggested dont even fly to hong kong any more. Many restaurants were nonexistant. Things are changing rapidly in Hong Kong. Frommers has not kept up with those changes. Seems like a [price] rip off scam to me.

      Good luck.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2001-11-10

This is a good tour book tell you all you need to wrap before your traveling. This book also help you to control your travel budget and tailor your travel into your appetite! So how can you travel to Hong Kong without this one?

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2001-02-03

This is a really excellent, accurate, and carefully researched guide, full of helpful information. Note however that it is not BY Arthur Frommer, who publishes a magazine and lends his name to the series, but no longer writes guide books--the author is Beth Reiber. She is right on top of her subject, and you couldn't ask for a better, more complete guide to Hong Kong.
