Book Description
Here, entirely updated, is the latest edition of the most complete, authoritative cruising guide to the northeastern coast. The bible for Eastern sailors and powerboaters for more than half a century has been thoroughly overhauled and expertly refitted. For the preparation of the twelfth edition, the authors visited nearly all the harbors, talked with harbormasters and marina owners, and reevaluated earlier judgments. The Guide tells you how to dodge bad currents and edge around shoal water, and where to anchor and find essential services, including pump-out stations, fuel docks, and a hot shower. It notes channels and harbors that have been dredged or shoaled up; recently replaced buoys; and changes in marinas, boatyards, and other facilities. This guide is far more than a traditional cruising guide, providing valuable information on weather, tides, coastal geography and geology, fog, marine birds, animals, sea conditions, and even places of historical interest ashore. The authorswho know these great cruising grounds as old friendsrelate the histories of the towns, ports, vessels, lighthouses, and even rocks you'll encounter. Black-and-white photographs and maps throughout.

all black and white.......2005-08-26
Maptech is a better quick reference guide and more useful for navigation
Out of Date.......2005-04-08
While the cover for this book says 'Updated' and is labeled 12th edition, it appears to be a 2002 printing of a 1990 copyrighted texted. It describes the use of GPS briefly and refers to 'when it works, it is okay'. Obviously the comment predates the bombing raids on Bagdad. The description of harbors is little changed from a 1978 printing but having visited some of these harbors in 2004, I found the names, phone numbers and parts of the onshore facilities' descriptions totally out of date. I returned mine...hope you find a more up-to-date reference.
definitive!.......2003-02-16
a must have for the serious cruiser, a joy just to read as well.
Outstanding resource.......2002-07-08
A wonderful and entertaining resource book. It is filled not only with reference information for the cruising sailor, but geography, advice, local history and accounts of sailing (mis)adventures.
Well worth reading for anyone who loves the Northeast coastline - whether or not they have ever entered an unfamiliar harbor, short of food and fuel, just ahead of a storm.

50 Hikes in the Lower Hudson valley.......2007-10-03
Wonderfully clear and complete descriptions to plan a hike. I've tried several, finding them very enjoyable.
A Valuable Tool For NY Area Hikers.......2004-02-03
50 Hikes In The Lower Hudson Valley is a valuable guide to some good trails . Stella Green and Neil Zimmerman provide detailed descriptions on 50 quality hikes. The accompanying maps along with these vivid descriptions are pretty easy for someone who would like to lead a group of hikers. The pictures are quite scenic as well.
The authors are a little inconsistent when it comes to providing telephone numbers for contact information about some trails. Also, the authors lock into one route on many of the hikes without taking into consideration easier trails for light hikers. However, the maps provided and the use of the internet can get around this minor issue.
Nonetheless, this is a valuable reference book for many audiences.

Customer Reviews:
You'll want to try them all!.......2007-10-18
We are not expert hikers, but we got around fine using this guidebook. We knew we wanted to go hiking during our B&B weekend in the Hudson Valley, but wanted to try somewhere other than Mohonk Mountain (which is very nice, and covered in the book, but we've done it a few times). We took his suggestion and rode out to Stissing Mountain. It was so worth it! Between the directions in the book and help from our GPS, we were able to find the trailhead. Climbing to the top was a little intense, but we were rewarded with amazing views from the firetower, just as promised! We can't wait to go back for more hikes!

Customer Reviews:
Great book for a weekend trip.......2006-03-12
I bought this book before I read the reviews, and I'm glad I did. The Hudson River Valley is expensive. That's why no cheap lodgings are in the book. We stayed at the Peekskill Inn and found it very affordable as well as charming. The book is small enough for an easy carry - as befits a weekend tripper. It's nicely divided into possible weekend trips so the reader can choose which area fits their mood. Each area gets a thorough review of what it has to offer - not just food, lodging, cultural events, but an understanding of where the area has been and what it has to offer the traveler. The icing on the cake is that the book is fun to read, e.g. "Woodstock feels like an unmade bed - comfortable but disheveled."
not a primary guide.......2005-11-03
I am a Lonely Planet enthusiast and usually use them as my main source during trips and collect them for armchair reading. I saw this and picked it up since I live near the area and have not ventured there in a long time.
This book should only be purchased if you already have the Moon Handbook to New York. I just got the Moon after using this and another guide on previous trips and I feel foolish.
First of all, the money you save by buying this little diary may very well be spent anyway since Ms. Williams doesn't seem to have any interest in anything but high end B&Bs, so if you are on a budget and don't mind a clean but boring room there are no listings, that's none: zero. I found places like this but at random, and almost stayed in a dangerous area because I knew of no alternatives. Moon lists all acceptable motels and B&Bs and lets you decide what you want and how much dough you have.
Second, Ms. Williams likes cool coffee shops, eatieries, shops, but doesn't seem too keen on turning out much copy on historical and cultural sights, so there is precious little coverage. Moon's background info is superior and again, they list all the options and let you decide. Moon New York has more overall info on Hudson Valley despite the fact that it covers the rest of the state as well, and if your car can go over 40 mph I'm sure there's something in a neighboring area that suit your tastes.
And I know LP has other regional guides, but would it kill them to throw in more coverage of the Catskills? We're not talking about Miami to Greenland here, just what's within a two hour drive.
Moderately helpful but a bit thin on details.......2004-08-20
I just returned from a trip to the Hudson River Valley using this book as my primary guide. WIlliams' style was entertaining, and her restaurant advice terrific when it came to The Calico Restaurant in Rhinebeck (we had a fabulous meal) but important details were neglected.
WIlliams' accurately described the town of Hudson, with the town center choc-a-bloc full of antique shops, surrounded by urban decay. With a love of antiques, I planned a trip to Hudson to for an extensive 'tique crawl only to discover 99% of the shops are open ONLY Friday-Sunday. Hudson being far north of my base, the travel time ate much of the day making a last minute change of plans a real challenge.
Likewise, she neglected to mention in any detail the Institute for Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, which is a fascinating place with an excellent perennial garden and very pleasant, helpful and knowlegable staff. Fortunately, we stumbled onto this place by accident, but it was a trip highlight.
Short shrift was similarly given to the many wineries in the area, merely mentioning their existence but with few details.
The maps were helpful, and as I mentioned earlier, our lunch in Rhinebeck at the Calico Restaurant was divine so she gets credit for that. Otherwise, think of this book as a basic intro only and plan on doing much more research before you depart for the Hudson River Valley.

TRAVELERS' GUIDE TO HUDSON RIVER VALLEY.......2007-08-03
On the mark and very interesting. I want to make some trips to the Hudson Valley.
Traveler beware.......2007-06-30
We went through many guide books and decided to use this one. Big mistake. First, we are not big outdoors folks; we love nature, and the valley is indeed beautiful, but we aren't able to do much in the way of hiking and such. So while this book might be great for those into outdoor sports, its not so good to those who'd like to travel to see the sights. It was very frustrating to plan on being in one place, only to find out that days and times of operation were wrong in the guide book. We also found much exaggeration; Albany, Troy and Cold Springs, while they had their charms, were nothing like we were expecting based on the descriptions in the book. The antique shops in Kingston and Hudson were closed more often then not. And while New Palz Hugenot street was very cool, the rest was eh. Again, this is a better book for outdoors folk. But I wish the authors would have warned us as we are doing now.
This is the trip I would take if I were tripping today........2006-11-22
I read this lovely book for genealogical purposes. The migratory path of our family was from Westchester County in the 1600s to Schoharie County in the 1800s. There are a few towns mentioned here where our people had lived.
The book begins in Albany going toward New York City. I read it backwards one chapter at a time to really make the trip in the same direction that our family went!
Who knows if I will really take this trip? I collected travel brochures on France for a dozen years and then I really went three times. When I take this trip I am bringing this guide.
Red Hook Inn, Red Hook NY Guest Comments.......2005-07-28
We purchased this book for our INN guests who are interested in learning more about the interesting history of the Hudson Valley of NY. We have owned it for about 3 weeks and at least 5 guests have taken it overnight to read and each guest has returned it to us with very positive comments on the accuracy of the contents. We highly recommend this book for anyone who is going to visit the Hudson Valley of NY! Pat and Bill, Innkeepers
A Perfect Companion to the Region.......1999-11-24

I highly recommend this book for all who visit and seek more information about the Hudson River Valley.

Customer Reviews:
Great book in a great series.......2005-11-27
In the age of instant maps via the internet, I will put aside the complaint about any poor directions. Overall, I have enjoyed the hikes in the book. We have hikes with very young children and with teens. Each hike is outlined well, with idea for keeping the young folks interested (though I find that my kids are very good at keeping themselves interested along a trail). I am thankful for the season guide, the altitude guide, and other details that are significant when hiking with children. I only wish there were guides for more regions, especially in the southern states.
Beware: Bad Driving Directions.......2002-06-10
Great concept for a book. The hikes themselves look great. However, be warned, there appears to be major problems with the driving instructions - at least the two we followed.
1. Page 40: Hike #1: Pine Meadow Lake - The book states "From New York City, take the Thruway (I-87) north to Exit 15." This is in error. The correct exit is 15A - NOT Exit 15!!! Taking Exit 15 (as we unfortunately found out) will take you in the wrong direction. What this means is all the directions to Harriman State Park from New York City are wrong in this book.
2. Page 118: Hike #22: Hudson River At Staatsburgh Mills Mansion State Park. The book states "From New York City, take the Thruway (I-87) north to Exit 10." This is a REALLY bad mistake. The correct exit is Exit 9. Going to Exit 10 as the book directs (and we followed) takes you to the wrong side of the Hudson river!!!
Incidentally, these are not new or recently-revised exit numbers.
These were the only two sets of directions we followed so far and both were very wrong. Needless to say we are very disappointed in the book - especially one that is so newly revised. There needs to be a lot more attention to detail and fact checking by the authors.
Are there any more mistakes? Who knows? I guess we'll find out the hard way. It's not to much fun following their driving directions to the letter and then getting lost with a 5 year old in the backseat.
This book has the potential be a 4 or 5 star if it weren't for these profound problems.
