Book Description
Snorkel Hawaii: The Big Island is the first guidebook exclusively devoted to snorkeling on The Big Island of Hawaii.
From a colorful cover to dozens of detailed maps of snorkeling sites, it draws you into the fascinating underwater world that shouldn't be missed by anyone touring the Big Island.
As Dave Barry says: "When you finally see what goes on underwater, you realize that you've been missing the whole point of the ocean--it's like going to the circus and staring at the outside of the tent."
It is the first in a series of guidebooks that provide more detailed snorkeling information than ever before available for each of the Hawaiian islands in an attractive, easy to carry package. Snorkel Hawaii: Maui and Lanai, also available from Amazon.com, provides the same detailed coverage of these beautiful islands. Our website, www.malinowski.com, provides detailed information, updates and more.

Excellent information!.......2007-08-26
This book was great for precise and concise information about where to snorkel on the Big Island. We used it daily to decide where we would go. It also gave information about where it was safe to take our 2 young and inexperienced snorkelers as well as where to park, the easiest place for entry, and which direction to head once you are in the water. I highly recommend this book.
Great snorkeling guide to Big Island.......2006-07-05
While a couple years old at this point, this book still pointed the way for me on a recent week of snorkeling on Hawaii. Excellent descriptions and maps of specific reefs and beaches. Good opening introduction to snorkeling for novices. If you are heading to the big island for snorkeling, spend time before your trip with this book and it will pay huge dividends.
Maps Alone Make It Worth The Price.......2006-03-28
After three weeks of snorkeling the Big Island, our copy of Snorkel Hawaii - The Big Island, is dog-eared. The maps of snorkeling spots are worth every penny of the book. They are clear and show everything necessary: best water entry points, best snorkeling spots in a bay (differing between beginning, intermediate, and advanced snorkelers), landmarks, parking, and amenities such as showers and restrooms. The Sites at a Glance section presents all the sites in chart format with ratings, entry difficulty, amenities, and brief remarks. The book helped us target our snorkeling time and we swam with both dolphins and sea turtles, viewing a moray eel and more varieties of tropical fish than we were able to count!
works as advertised.......2006-02-06
The book works as advertised. You will find the parking, the beach, the fish, and the currents just as described.
Indispensable guide to snorkeling on the Big Island.......2006-01-27
This guide is invaluable for locating the best snorkel sites on the Big Island. Its guide to the best sites, how accessible each is, and how to find public parking for them, is priceless. I just returned from a trip to the Big Island and used this guide not only for finding the best snorkeling sites but also the best swimming beachers and how to find those elusive public parking spaces for them. A fantastic guide, completely up-to-date and accurate.

And it's Dolphin Friendly. The authors have personally inspected the few dolphin swims included to make certain the dolphins were rescued from circuses or shows, are well cared for, enjoy interacting with people and would have otherwise been destroyed. No facilities that take dolphins from the wild are included.
Resorts for every budget include secluded hideaways with reef snorkeling off the beach or within walking distance. Also featured are campgrounds, and resorts with on-site water sport shops.
More than just a travel guide, "Snorkeling Adventures" offers first-aid tips for coral cuts and sea stings, a special chapter on sharks, procedures and an introduction to gear for newcomers. Maps, color and black and white photos, drawings, detailed topside directions and special dive-tour operators are covered as are select spots for children, novices and experienced open-water divers.

For enthsiasts from the American continent only.......2007-05-12
I was surprised to find out that the title did not tell the truth. The writers did not include half the world. The indian ocean for example is missing.
The Fun of Snorkeling.......2006-09-13
This book is a must for anyone who enjoys water activities. It is a terrific book for beginners and also for those who are advanced in snorkeling.
Divers Delight.......2006-09-03
I love this guide. My dive vacations are strickly to take underwater photos and being able to plan ahead makes my life so much easier. It gives me the airlines, the resorts with prices, when I can expect good weather. It's like having a personal travel planner. I would not plan a Caribbean dive trip without consulting this trustworthy book.
Best snorkeling guide around.......2006-09-01

Everything the Diver needs to know.......2002-01-07
Once again we have an excellent combination of Author and Publisher who have collaborated to provide an invaluable guide book for any diver contemplating a trip to Hawaii. "Diving Hawaii" is another Scuba Diving guide book in the medium size format favoured by Aqua Quest. These publishers have a reputation for high standards - in terms of quality of information and standard of photography, and it is easy to see why.
"Diving Hawaii" is clearly laid out with chapters on; An introduction to the Hawaiian Islands, Diving in general, the specific dive sites of Oahu, Maui, Hawaii and Kauai and local Marine Life. The book concludes with some very useful Appendixes containing; Emergency information, details of local Scuba Diving centres, miscellaneous useful numbers for visitors and some brief notes on another 20 dive sites.
Chapter One begins with an all-important historical précis of Hawaii. This gives the visitor a brief insight into the country's first Polynesian settlers, the way in which the country was then ruled by it's own system of chiefs for something like 1,000 years, the islands' discovery by Captain Cook, the importance of sugar plantations, the time when Hawaii became a US territory and, eventually (in 1959) the 50th State. All of which is followed by equally important notes on present day Hawaii and all the essential information the visitor needs to know.
Chapter 2 is an overview of Diving in general with notes on; boat, shore and night diving as well as conservation. There is also a very important and well written description of the unusual underwater lava tubes and cave formations created by the flow of volcanic lava into the sea. These are probably very different from any other form of Cave Diving found anywhere else in the world and Page 21 is rightly devoted to a full-page warning of the dangers involved here.
We now come to those Chapters individually dedicated to each of the four main islands in the Hawaiian group and these take in any smaller adjacent islands as well. Once again, we are treated to an introduction to the island itself before getting down to diving specifics. This commences with a map of the island(s) showing the primary dive sites as numbers - each of which is then described in more than adequate detail and headed by the relevant depth, experience level required and access.
Altogether a well-rounded book containing all the information required by anyone considering a diving trip to Hawaii.
According to the Author's biography on the back page, Steve Rosenberg specialises in underwater photography. As a fellow professional "Underwater Photographer & Author," I congratulate him on some truly outstanding pictures.

"Frank de Carvalho does an excellent job describing O'ahu's diving sites and how to access them. His guide is a valuable addition to the collective body of work on Hawai'i's shores and beaches." --- John R. K. Clark, author of Hawai'i Place Names: Shores, Beaches, and Surf Sites and Hawai'i's Best Beaches

Oahu diving must-read!.......2007-03-22
This book is the secret that I needed after I moved to Oahu to avoid expensive boat dives. Great maps both above and below the water to make finding the site just as easy as finding the best underwater attractions. The book covers dive sites all over the island (you can always find a good site even if surf is too high on one part of the island...very valuable - especially during winter months). A "must buy" for any diver planning to explore the coasts of Oahu without a paid guide. You probably won't find this book in any dive shops on the Island...it would take all of their business!
This book was very accurate.......2007-03-09
Couldn't believe once I got to Oahu and went to a couple of these dive sites how accurate this book was from directions to reef layout and compass headings. Went on a couple of dives with Oahu divers who were also very impressed with the accuracy of this book. A great resource but I recommend always verifying the sites with locals as there were hazzards that couldn't be mentioned in a book (i.e. at one dive site I found out there is a regular boat charter that doesn't pay attention to dive flags and drops anchor wherever and whenever he feels like it... never would have know that one without the local warning). Still a great book... two of the local guys I dove with from Oahu who are dive instructors are going to buy the book after seeing mine - what better recommendation could there be?
Shore Diving is not dead.......2006-08-19
Most all the dive shops here have their own boats they want you to dive from, that's fine, but can get pricey. So being a cheap SoB I love this book and have done quite a few of the dives in it since picking it up a few months ago. Great planning tool for folks coming from off island too since he tells you what time of year it is best to do what dives. As always, leave your vauables at the hotel/house, I advise bringing only your drivers license, c-card and about $10-15 per person for postdive water/gatorade, pineapple or coconut and snacks.
Compact guide.......2006-02-26
This book was extremely helpful when I first arrived in the islands. The author's descriptions of the different areas on the island and the driving directions were easy to follow and led me to some of the most beautiful places on the island. I did not realize the island was actually that large. I also found the guide to be a very well organized book that did a thorough job of explaining everything you'd need to know about snorkeling and diving on Oahu. I must for any traveler wanting to enjoy snorkeling and diving on Oahu.
Diving the islands again.......2005-01-11
I dived several islands in Hawaii last August and picked up a copy of deCarvalho's book while on Oahu. This book has some great gouge on different sites around the island. I think anyone wanting to know other sites than some of the more popular and regular ones would find this guide helpful. The book is printed in black and white and the maps, but they are a great resource nontheless. The instructions on how to dive the sites are also helpful. Too bad there aren't other one source books like this one for the Big Island, Maui, and Kauai. A tip: If you want gouge on some of the other islands, check out some of the Lonely Planet guide books as a few of them cover sites on the other island sites, but not with a lot of details as you would find in this book.

Diving Hawaii and Midway.......2007-01-06
This book was a great mix on the culture and history of Hawaii, as well as great advice on scuba diving from people who actually dive and live there. The authors, who are also marine biologists and photographers, pointed out a lot of marine life that I previously didn't even know to look for. After reading, my dives were greatly enhanced having this added knowledge. And the photography was nice too. Very easy and interesting to read.

Great Book, But............2000-07-29
Great book if you are doing a reef study and need to identify the correct names for all the creaters. Great photo's and helpful hints on purchasing equipment, but for the average weekend or resort snorkeller it can get boring to read. However, the book is worth having.
A valuable acquisition for the South Pacific diver.......1998-07-25
Before my recent dive trip to Fiji I looked for a good fish ID book for the area (one with photos, not paintings) and came up short. It doesn't seem like anyone has done a comprehensive reference for this area comparable to Humann's works on the Caribbean.
However, I did find Paddy Ryan's fine volume in the lending library at the resort where I was staying. To my surprise, I find it to be much more than the typical, superficial "snorkeler's guide." It's a small but beautifully produced volume with excellent photography and a well-written text. It's a good balance of photos to help identify the most common South Pacific reef fish combined with informative text on the behavior and biology of reef fish, other vertebrates, and invertebrates.
I didn't buy a copy when I had a chance in a local shop, and I regretted it on the long flight home. I'm buying my personal copy as soon as I finish writing this. Take my word for it, for snorkelers, novice divers! , or serious divers, this is money well spent!

Great Field Guide!.......2000-09-28
This book is a great resource on shore diving in Maui. It provides details on all of the dive sites around the entire island. Dive sites are included for all skill levels from beginner to expert. The book includes directions, maps, marine life, warnings, etc.. This is the best book I've found for diving in Maui. It's straight to the point, and it makes a great field guide. The directions are a bit dated. New roads have been built since this book was created. The dive descriptions are right on though. Check out my travel report and how I used this book at DiveAtlas.com. If this book was updated it would receive 5 stars.
Thiks replaces my outdated review.

worth the price.......2005-11-24
Well worth the money to purchase this book. There are LOTS of quality places to snorkel and dive in Palau, this book gives you some help picking out the best places for you. Also some (not a ton, but adequate) suggestions for dry-land activities.
And yes, I was in Palau spring 2005- the jellys in jellyfish lake are back to a healthy population after El nino!
Very helpful while diving Palau.......2002-01-29
I spent 10 days diving Palau in June 2001 and this book was incredibly helpful. There are so many dive sites to choose from in this region, and this book did an excellent job detailing each and every one. Since most dive operators in this region take "requests" rather than dictate where you're going, it's nice to have some information to make an informed decision, depending upon whether you want to focus on macro, big animal enounters, drift dives, wrecks, etc. Going to dive Palau without this book is simply a bad idea.
Excellent, and more than just a diving & snorkeling guide !.......2001-07-28
I used by no means to be a fan of diving and snorkeling. Yet, the beautiful seas of the Pacific, combined with this wonderful excellently written guidebook, introduced me to the wonderful world of this activity. The guidebook provides excellent and invaluable information and advice for divers and snorkelers - beginners and experts alike - with special focus on how great this can be in Palau. Meanwhile, the guidebook is also a wonderful travel tool for visiting Palau, whether or not you are primarily there for snorkeling and diving. All in all, it is surely a worthwhile, if not crucial, purchase, before you set off to the Pacific.
