Book Description

You're going to Paris? And taking the kids? No problem - Paris with Kids offers a pro's insider tips for reconciling the adult, romantic side of Paris with the city's kid-friendly, adventurous aspects. The author presents a wealth of advice on how to plan a family visit to Paris, and how to have a blast while you're there. It shows how to enliven the tourist experience of Paris for youngsters: sending them searching for gargoyles, tracing the Secret of the Sorcerer's Stone in the Marais, and of course stopping by EuroDisney and the Eiffel Tower. There are countless anecdotes relating the people, events, and legends that make up the story of Paris.

Paris With Kids also features kid-tested recommendations for family-friendly hotels and restaurants, both in Paris and on day-trips outside the city. We include where to shop with kids for food, clothing, toys, English-language books, and other souvenirs; we offer our favorite playgrounds, green spaces, and amusement parks, suggestions for sports activities, and where to see magic shows, ride in a hot-air balloon, find kids' gourmet cooking classes, and how to make museums fun and enjoyable for the little ones.

4 out of 5 stars Head and shoulders above the rest.......2007-09-22

We have several different guides for seeing Paris with kids but this one takes the cake. What we've particularly enjoyed are the suggestions of other sights within a vicinity that make it easy to plan a day or an afternoon. We definitely would have missed some of these smaller sights -- such as the shopping passages along the Grand Boulevards and the bird market on Ile de la Cite -- that our kids truly enjoyed. Gwinner offers sensible and imaginative advice that make sightseeing with kids a pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Travel Guide Period.......2006-05-01

This is an excellent travel guide that happens to focus on things that are especially appealing when you are traveling with kids. The descriptions of the sites around town are interesting and well done. Even though this edition is a few years old, the restaurant and hotel recommendations were still extremely helpful in the spring of 2006. It was especially nice to have recommendations for places that mainly drew Parisians in areas that had heavy tourist traffic. This enabled my son and I to really experience Paris rather than just be exposed to other tourists. I looked at some other traveling with kids books and even bought the Cadogan guide but this one was head and shoulders above the rest. If you are bringing your child or children to Paris, I would suggest combining this with a guide that includes good maps of the city such as the Moon Metro Paris.

2 out of 5 stars OK, but there are better ones out there........2006-04-09

No maps, no discussion of Disney paris, A must for children in Paris. A better one is by Truszkowski, which has great color pics and maps and better info.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific planning -- and touring -- guide.......2004-10-28

Highly useful -- before getting to Paris and while there -- plus a fun read. My 11-year-old read most of book and found unique spots she wanted to visit -- like the pet shops near Pont Neuf. We enjoyed reading the boxed "Fun Facts" as we visited sites. Good entry-level history to France (for example, there's a 1-paragraph summary of "Who was Napoleon" tied to the description of Les Invalides). Filled with great tips on getting around Paris and highlights for different age kids.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Fun! Buy it, pack it and go!.......2004-04-21

Our family is similar to the authors: Franco-American, two kids (also boys) and a love of Paris. We thought we knew everything there was to know about Paris with kids, but this book taught us a wealth of new material, revealing an entire "new" city. If it could teach these old Paris hands a thing or two, just think what families new to Paris will learn. This book has a great mix of facts, fun, frivolity and fascination scattered throughout its pages, and is all you really need for a well-rounded trip to the City of Light. Buy it, pack it, and go!

Book Description

Fodor’s See It Paris is perfect for travelers who want to understand Parisian history and culture before they arrive, and experience the country like a native Parisan while they’re there.

Overflowing with brilliant color photography, this is the only illustrated guide that provides the practical information that you need while traveling—complete restaurant and hotel reviews with exact prices for lodging and dining (not ranges), plus time-saving tips and how to avoid crowds, exact admission prices to key sights, great photo stops, and special notes on “kid-friendly” attractions throughout.

Hotels
Our detailed reviews represent the best accommodations in Paris, in all price ranges. From five-star luxury hotels to low-budget family-run inns, we’ll tell you what to expect in terms of price and quality through extensive coverage of hotels and their surrounding neighborhoods, exact prices of double-occupancy rooms (including breakfast), plus pictures of hotel facilities and guestrooms.

Restaurants
If you want to experience the best that Paris has to offer, pay particular attention to our outstanding restaurant coverage that will help you choose from the 5,000 local eateries that cater to every budget and dining experience. From informal bistros, to restaurants where you can splurge on a romantic, candlelit dinner—you’ll find it in See It Paris. Each review covers house signature dishes, ambiance, actual prices for a two-course lunch and a three-course dinner (for two people), hours of operation, and what transportation will get you there.

The Sights
Whether you want to gaze at the Eiffel Tower at sunset, buy local art from the vendors at Montmartre, or shop the French fashions, See It Paris will take you there. Accessibly written to help you navigate throughout the country without missing a thing, each attraction includes exact admission prices, what galleries and museums not to miss, and where to stop for quick bites and refreshing drinks along the way. Sights are also rated for their “value”, “walkability”, “historic and cultural interest”, plus we suggest fantastic “photo stops” and entertaining and age-appropriate “kid-friendly” attractions throughout the book.

What to Do?
Our shopping walks will lead you to cutting-edge fashions to fit all budgets, from hip streetwear to haute couture. But, Paris has much more to offer than just sight-seeing and shopping. Fodor’s See It Paris provides insider information on classical, theatrical, and cinematic performances, Paris’ music scene, nightlife, spectator and activity sports, and festivals and events.

Atlas and Maps

Detailed neighborhood maps are incorporated throughout the book to help you navigate on historic walks, shopping tours, or to find a restaurant. Plus, a 16-page atlas details each road and path with highlights of important landmarks, parks, metro stations, and car parking areas.

Fodor’s See It™
A brand-new series that shows you before you go, guides you while you’re there, and makes the perfect keepsake on your return.

5 out of 5 stars Just as expected!!.......2007-07-07

I had bought the London guide in this series for a trip last year. I had also bought a new envelope-shaped purse, about an inch and a half across the bottom, that would look small yet would hold a lot -- the guide book fit in it perfectly (along with makeup, cell phone etc.). So as long as you don't have a TINY purse (i.e. handbag), this book is easy to carry along -- no backpack/bookbag required.

I bought the Paris edition hoping it would follow the same format with the same useful information as the London book. It is EXACTLY the same. (A good thing!)

The first few pages tell you helpful tips like how to ride the metro. Then there's a few pages about the history of Paris from the beginning of time to the prest. Then the real guide book begins. It's organized into categories like museums and restaurants, and after listing the must-sees, there is a detailed (street-leve) map showing the area it just talked about. You will definitely need a metro map to get the "big picture" to get around, but in order to plan where you want to go and get an idea of what the City will physically be like, this is THE book to get. It's got all the best points of all of the other guides rolled into one. And yet it's not so "condensed" like some guidebooks that you have to either know where you're going or have read other books in order to really plan your trip. This is one stop shopping for your vacation!! I HIGHLY recommend this series (even above all the other Fodor publications)! (I looked into all the guidebooks for London -- Fodor included -- before chosing this series. This is THE one to get!)

4 out of 5 stars Great ideas; check open days/time on line.......2006-04-02

Just finishing a month in Paris with my 7 year old and used this book daily as a starter for planning our activities. As with any travel book, double check the opening times and days on-line for EVERY place you want to go. Even with the big museums, various exhibits are often closed on certain days even if the museum says they are open. (Ex: Louvre doesn't have enought staff to keep every gallery open every day. Their website tells you what's open when so you don't take your future Egyptologist to the Louvre when most of those rooms are closed.) If you are from the United States, also take with a grain of salt when a commercial venue (not historic monument or museum) is rated as 'great' in this book. As my older boys observed on a visit to Paris with me 13 years ago: Europe does "old" really well and the USA does "new" really well. You don't come to Paris to go to water parks and toy stoys!

1 out of 5 stars Try 60 Great things to do.......2005-10-09

We ordered this book and started to look it over on the plane. Our daughter's first trip to the CITY OF LIGHTS! The attractions are listed in reverse order of interest, we slowly and with great anticipation read #68 Aquaboulevard, then #67 Arc de Triomphe, #66 Arenes de Lutece, #57 Champs-Elysees.......wait, that's not right!!! Attractions 58 through 65 ARE MISSING!!! I guess it didn't matter that the Centre de la Mer wasn't too exciting, since that was #59 in the table of contents, which was NOT INCLUDED our book. #65 Bateaux Parisiens, must have sunk, not there. #64 Bercy Village, we are back from a summer in France and still don't know what that is. #63 Bois de Boulogne, I thought that was the red light district, but apparently there is supposed to be something for kids too, just not included in our book. #61 Catacombes, I visited this once before, I loved it and wanted to take the family, it was closed this summer, no mention of anything like that in our printing. #60 Cathedrale de Notre-Dame-de-Paris, I admit, if you go to Paris and can't find this one on your own then a book isn't going to help any, but still it would have been nice, just for continuity. #58 Centre National d'Art et de Culture Georges Pompidou, I can't imagine what a kid could enjoy about this, maybe if it was included in the book I could tell you, but it wasn't. So if you wan't to do 60 things in Paris, by all means take this book, but if you plan on anything more than that, buy something else.

1 out of 5 stars Not well researched.......2005-10-07

One exaple: After arriving at Versailles with my sleeping daughter in her stroller, we found out no strollers were allowed inside. There were 3 other parents with babies/strollers spending there time outside the palace as well, probably wishing they wouldn't have made the trek.

Nothing was listed to this effect, it said it was a great place for kids. I'm sure it is, but that is a relevant piece of information for parents of small children.

5 out of 5 stars And I thought Paris was a city only for adults!!.......2005-07-25

I had spent a lot of time in Paris in the 1980s and recently went back with my 1 1/2 yr old son. This book was immensely helpful. As other reviewers noted, it highlights areas like Arenes de Lutece and Jardin des Plantes that are less touristy but great for kids. In fact, we met many Parisian families by going to the areas that the Parisians used. In regards to the one negative review, we did buy the 2nd edition (2003) so didn't have any logistical issues...although you should always call ahead in whatever city you may be traveling. As a plus, it's small and easy to travel with. (One minor complaint, we felt that the aquarium wasn't worth the time it took to get there, it is "modest" in size and scope). But the book - Strongly recommend.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars If Possible I'd Give it Six.......2005-01-10

By Bill Marsano. If you were to go to a really well-stocked bookstore and start counting the guidebooks devoted to Paris, there's a fair chance you wouldn't finish on the same day you started. Paris is like the Battle of Gettysburg: Everyone wants to write about it and almost everyone does. (Some more than once.) So while you might consider yourself spoiled for choice, it's more likely that you'll be overwhelmed and baffled.

I can help you out here because I'm almost uniquely qualified to judge. I've used guides, written for guides and even sold guides in a travel bookstore. And from that I conclude that this is the best guide to Paris available, bar none.

Dana Facaros and Michael Pauls have written literally dozens of guides; I first came to know their work in Italy two decades ago. They lived there at the time just as they are now writing guides to France and live there too. It's fair to say that from depth of experience and local perspective, they can't be beat. They are not quick in-and-outers dependent on what the local tourist office is pushing.

Their Paris book has all you'd expect from any decent competitor, of which there are plenty: details and overviews of nightlife, sports, parks, hotels, transport, restaurants, museums, walking tours, festivals, flea markets, shopping. All that and more. What sets it apart--far apart--is the quality and freshness of the writing, which is informed, stylish and witty (the historical notes are especially fine and a delight to read). The reader truly feels guided by this book--taken in hand by an expert (two of them in this case) and given the key to the city. This is a genuinely sophisticated approach to the City of Light. A triomphe, in fact.

If you're going to Paris for a week or more, you may very well wish to embark upon a daytrip beyond the city. For that you must buy "An Hour from Paris," by Annabel Simms (a Brit long resident in Paris). She's a perfect companion to Facaros and Pauls, and almost their equal as a writer. She lists 20 splendid daytrips, most of them little known, all available by public transport, and none more than an hour away.--Bill Marsano is an award-winning travel writer and editor.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very knowledgeable authors; featured walks are a good basis for first-time visitors.......2007-05-07

I bought this guide the day before I left for Paris, mainly due to the crisp bird's-eye illustrations of the different walking routes. I rented a bike and was able to do 7 of the walks. However, I don't recommend doing some of the walks like the Ile de Cite one on a bike due to one-way streets. I was particularly impressed with the Left Bank Impressions walk with nice boutiques, galleries and outdoor snack stands along the way. The Latin Quarter walk, the Marais walk and the Island Hopping walks were similarly impressive. Every street corner was worthy of a picture. The authors definitely researched these walks thoroughly and I highly recommend this guide to first-time and returning visitors to Paris to get their bearings on this marvelous city.

4 out of 5 stars Exploring Paris by foot........2007-02-01

Paris is a perfect city to explore by foot and by public transportation. Using three-dimensional maps and color photographs, this basic guide offers fourteen detailed walks through some of the city's most interesting neighborhoods including Montmartre, the Latin Quarter, St. Germain des Pres, Ile St-Louis and Ile de la Cite, and the Grands Boulevards in the Opera district, with helpful information on where to catch the Metro (Paris's subway), a bus, or a taxi, and reliable recommendations for places to stop and shop, eat, drink, and sightsee along the way. Having completed many of the guided walks included in this guide during a recent visit to Paris, I can highly recommend this book for the first-time visitor to Paris not interested in wandering too far off the beaten path.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finally something different.......2007-08-03

I am sitting here looking at 7 different travel books of Paris that I received as gifts prior to my trip to Paris. Now this was my 2nd trip; the first one was in 1966 and I was in high school so I don't think it really counts. I felt like I was starting over and I really didn't know where to start. While some of the guide books were helpful, I really wanted to get a few very special momentos of the trip - especially scarves - so I was just thrilled when I happened upon Maribeth's book at Shakespeare and Co. when we were already there. I devoured the book that night and from it easily found several wonderful shops that I never would have seen were it not for her shop. I look forward to using it to an even greater degree as I plan a trip back next year.

5 out of 5 stars Your Paris Shopping Map-Don't Leave Home Without It!.......2003-02-13

Most of the Paris guides available give plenty of information on using the Paris Metro, the museums, and taking a taxi. However, what they lack is information on the very things that make a visit to Paris memorable and personal. Maribeth Clemente's "The Riches of Paris" provides key information on a wide variety of shopping interests. Are you into antique books?-the book has it....Are you into food stores, children's boutiques, or flowers? - the book has it. How about the best place to get a couture scarf, a pen, a cigar? - Again, the book has it. What I especially found useful was my ability to plan my shopping excursions before I got onto the plane...when I arrived I was able to fit in both the best sightseeing and museums AND the shops I knew would be of interest to me. My time was efficiently planned and I was able to fit many more memorable experiences into my trip. Ms. Clemente's index is especially useful in personalizing your trip...seperating shops by like categories, and presenting them in the book by area. This categorization takes the work out of planning a day....one day I planned to visit a particular area...I was set because of the book. Another day I decided to visit all children's toy stores...no problem again because of the book! A must have for getting the most out of your time!

4 out of 5 stars The elegance and excitement that is only Paris..........2001-09-10

...is evident in every page. Even if I hadn't been planning another trip to the city of lights, I would have been on the next flight!
As shown in her other books, Maribeth Clemente has a wonderful way of not only giving you the information that you need, but getting you excited about your exploration with every word. She covers the "unique" of Paris with a fresh, honest perspective. I feel like I'm walking down a lovely boulevard with her as my guide. When I've checked the "reality" of other travel books, I've found a real mix--what I read was not always what I got. It seems like reviews were completed by multiple sources with multiple perspectives of what would entice. Maribeth Clemente's insight/personality is consistent, elegant, fun and unexpected. And yet...she always seems to leave a little bit to your own exploration. I trust her to route me to the best--especially if I don't have a lot of time. This book is also an improvement from prior releases in it's organization--making quicker, easier reference to the user "on the road". Thanks!

4 out of 5 stars PARIS - A CITY OF ROMANCE, LIGHTS AND DELIGHTS!.......2001-07-06

One has not travelled until you have visited Paris. It is a city of wonder, history, romance, excitement and fashion. I studied for a short time in Paris many years ago and fell in love with the city. It also fell in love with my pocket book! The cafes, exquisite boutiques, and Epicurean cuisine will forever be a cherished memory; however, the first-time traveller to Paris should be forwarned; it can be a VERY EXPENSIVE city to enjoy, particularly if you do not know where you will get "the best value for your dollar." As this book clearly points out, most of the better hotels are luxurious and quite costly, as are the better known, finer restaurants. You definitely will not want to leave home without your trusty credit card! I purchased a Chanel Tee-shirt and for the same price, I could have purchased an entire rack of tee-shirts in my country. However, the joy of Paris is for many, a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one you will never regret no matter what the cost. The book is not complete; however, many of the special places of interest are not included in the book, which was rather disappointing. There are also some excellent more affordable restaurants and places to stay in Paris which are not listed here. The book was interesting and informative but did tend to patronize basically the higher-end, upscale facilities.

    Book Description

Two women who scarcely know each other, but with a common love of exotic landscape, vintage wheels, and high adventure (one a well-heeled Pacific Heights motorcycle enthusiast, the other a Santa Cruz-based automotive journalist, car fanatic, and mother of two small children) join forces to tackle an arduous endurance rally, driving a classic car over ten thousand miles of rough and exotic terrain in the Peking to Paris Motor Challenge. Prince Borghese's Trail is a classic travel adventure narrative in the tradition of Alexandra David-Neel and Beryl Markham.

5 out of 5 stars A great book about a very unusual "road race".......2003-07-31

I happened to see a British television account of this event this past summer on History International. I missed this one when it was happening probably because I was involved in my own journeys. I caught the series in the middle and this book explained in great detail what I'd missed.
I think it would be extremely difficult to make this trip even in a new vehicle much less in most of these vehicles---this event was really wacky; it would be like running your 80 year old grandfather in a marathon and taking him out every so often for knee surgery and then back in the race again. The winning team with their modified jeep certainly had the right vehicle for that trip.
This account reflects very well the problems of balancing timing and navagation needs of road racing with the sightseeing. Many of the participants had to give up on the race and go along for the ride. The portraits of the racers were well done, particularly Andy Vann and his selfless heroism along the way. He was inspiring. The disdainful winner Phil Surtees, the madman organizers, the papershuffling petty despots along the way, the rivalries among the racers, the culture divide of modern women encountering their enemies in Iran, and the burnout at the end are all here. I really enjoyed this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Genevive, a Hillman Hunter and a 10,000 mile rally........2001-12-27

For those of us with less adventure in our souls than Genny, her story should be read with a mind to the extreme bravery displayed by both the writer and her co-driver on this epic adventure. Why do I raise the subject of bravery in a book report? Perhaps being British and therfore my inate "Britishness" (perhaps it is unfashonable to be a gentleman these days?) makes the reading of some of the report on this book from your side of the Atlantic seem a little harsh. I assumed that the content of the book was of primary importance? It seems that some fellow report writers want to concentrate on writing style and quality of punctuation rather than the text? I implore all who read this book to do so with an open mind considering the achievement of Genny and Linda in the context of travel writing, giving due credit for the superlative historic reference's to the initial running of the Peking to Paris at the turn of the 20th century. I am, and will admit to being somewhat biased in this matter. I witnessed the bravery of the writer and her co-driver fist hand. Following a high speed accident when their car hit a hidden culvert I was the medical officer who attended to Genny and Linda. They refused all but the most basic of medical intervention when lesser persons would have rolled over and quit. Not only did they display admirable bravery and foresight they also demonstrated considerable mechanical ability by repairing the damage to the car themselves! Whithout doubt, Genny is one of the most complete long distance rally competitors. It was a great honour for me to take part in the Peking to Paris as part of the support team, and a great honour to have become aquainted with such a strong and determined lady. Litrary detractors please take note and be mindful of the sacrifices travel writers make for their art.

    1 out of 5 stars Great Subject--Poor Execution.......2001-05-26

Obert's account of the her trip of "10,000 miles over two continents, four deserts, and the roof of the world in The Peking to Paris Motor Challenge" is both compelling and disappointing. It is compelling in that it would be hard to write about a classic car rally which goes across China, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, and on to Paris without it being interesting. It is annoying in that freelance magazine writer Obert doesn't do [much] with the great material. The purpose of the rally is to recreate a 1907 race which was documented by an Italian journalist who rode with Prince Borghese. Obert cribs the interesting bits from that account, but is [doesn't add] in integrating them into her own trip. Ditto for the local history, which appears to be largely...from Lonely Planet and other basic guidebooks. Once certainly learns a great deal of interesting stuff about the rules and manners of rallying. She's good on the car stuff, but weak on the people. The vast number of contestants results in Obert's inability to really give more than a quick character sketch of any. It would have been more interesting if she'd stuck with tracking a few fellow contestants all the way through and gotten more in depth on them. Much of the book is marred by a whiny tone with respect to her driving partner, the race organizers, poor accommodations, food, and especially the wearing of a headscarf when traveling through Iran. All in all, despite Obert's claim to be a big traveler, I didn't get the feeling she really enjoyed the world she drove by, or was making much of an effort to understand it. Indeed, she revels in the rally's arrival in Italy--ah the West! And finally, her attempt to justify the huge expense of the whole undertaking--to her...self and the reader--at the very end is laughable. She...claims, "Our long drive was an act of connection," no, such events are purely about the self. She didn't hear about the rally and think. "Wow, what a great way to connect with less fortunate parts of the world," she thought (as I would) "Wow, how cool would that be to do!" This lack of honesty at the end was the final sour footnote for me to a book which would have benefited from better physical design (it's an ugly book to read), a much more rigorous editor, and a more prepared and perceptive narrator. Certainly the rally comes across as interesting, and Obert's personal achievement is quite an accomplishment, I just wish a better book had come of it.

4 out of 5 stars Good account of the race.......2000-03-27

The book has a very strong first half where the rally was toughest and there is plenty of description of the terrain, the race and technical problems they encounter. That portion of the race seemed more exotic and exciting, most of the cars dropped out then. The author gives a pleasant amateur racer perspective and it encourages all of us to get involved! However, as the race approaches the more civilised parts of Asia and Europe, the book begins to wind down, the author becomes homesick and the race no longer has the same conflicts and challenges. Perhaps fatigue was creeping in among the competitors but it does mean that the book peters out a bit. It would still encourage me to look for the other books written on this rally to get another perspective!

    5 out of 5 stars One Woman's View.......2000-01-05

Having done the Cannonball Classic in September 1999 with the author and having survived six One Lap of America adventures myself, I thought I was an endurance driver. But nothing I have done can compare to Jenny's adventure. No way would you find me in some of those driving situations -- unbelievable roads, mechanical brakedowns, dress code restrictions, hideous toilets, etc. I have traveled a good chunk of the world and I love to drive cars fast and hard, but Jenny -- you are one in a million. Even though I have met you and know that you survided the adventure, I still couldn't put the book down -- always wanting to see what happened next. Did you make it? Did you live through it? This book will be of interest to woman who like cars, woman who don't like cars but love to travel and any guy who is interested in cars or adventure. It is a great read.

2 out of 5 stars Does not include women.......2007-05-07

I was very disappointed in this book. It made absolutely no attempt
to include anything of interest to lesbians. It was all "Where the
boys are" and other itmes of interest to gay men only, such as fashion,
etc. If you are a lesbian, don't bother with this book.
