5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-08-23

This book was perfect for my trip to Paris. Used it lots and lots every day. The maps were particularly good.

3 out of 5 stars Visually stunning, but bereft of information.......2007-08-18

The graphics, images, and maps are really well done, and cover many of the places you would want to visit. However the actual textual information is remarkably limited, leaving you to judge how to invest your time based largely on the pictures. In addition, the guide is careful to provide no cost information at all for any attractions.

I would recommend this guide only in combination with another guide that provides more information, background, and cost information. This was the only tour guide I had, so I don't have a specific recommendation for the companion to this one. You should read the reviews of the other Paris guides with an eye towards what is missing in this one. With that guide, I think this one is in fact worth the money and, perhaps more importantly, the space in your carry-on baggage.

I do highly recommend Sandra Gustafson's "Great Eats Paris" and "Great Sleeps Paris", which are far better and much more comprehensive than the corresponding coverage you would find in this or any other Paris guide book.

5 out of 5 stars Great tour book for Paris!.......2007-08-13

My husband and I just traveled to Paris for our first anniversary, and we bought this book to help us plan our trip. It was perfect! It's full of great information about the city and various sights to see. It also contains maps that came in very handy! The book also contains a couple pages of important phrases in French - not much, but enough to help you get by! I always buy the travel books from this series when I travel, because they are so appealing to look at! Rather than just containing pages and pages of text like many travel guides, these books are full of great pictures, maps, and photographs. A great travel guide!

5 out of 5 stars Good guidebook.......2007-05-14

This guidebook really helped me on my trip to Paris. There's lots of good, up to date info and maps.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide to Paris.......2007-04-23

This book gives a little history and insight into Paris. This is the second Eyewitness I have purchased and LOVE IT! It not was invaluable while we were there but a great memory book of the places we saw.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2007-08-07

the top 10 guides are the greatest books for traveling. they give the top 10 of everything you would like to know-sights, resturants, hotels. we traveled through europe and book several different types of books and the top 10 were our favorites!

5 out of 5 stars great book if you are going to paris. .......2007-05-29

I bought this book off of amazon and am I glad I did. I'm not the type of traveler who just goes places on a whim. I like to plan on seeing certain sites and then to go see them. I read this book cover to cover, and several others, then went to Paris earlier this year. This book prepared me very well for my trip. It has all the information you will need to know before going to Paris, which is a wonderful city. It is definitely worth the visit at least once. The book helps with many of the small things that many tourists who do not have extensive experience travelling abroad would need to know.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for travel.......2007-05-28

Great book for travelling. Small in size so fits in a backpack or purse easily without much weight.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing portable guide.......2006-12-17

If you are planning a short trip to Paris this is a must have book. It covers excellent restaurants and wonderful places to stop and shop. The essential sights are all listed by region and are explained in enough detail for one to decide if they want to visit. If you are going for a longer period of time I would recommend a bigger guide but I would still get this one to walk around with.

5 out of 5 stars DK publishing delivers yet again with this Paris guide..........2006-09-04

Just as impressed with DK Publishing's Top 10: Paris as I was with their Top 10 - Munich guide. Detailed maps and metro routes, information on how long to plan to spend at each sight and what to skip, quick translation guide for basic phrases to get you through your trip with the locals, and detailed pictures to refer back to after you've taken your guided tour but forgotten the names of your stops.

Keep it in your backpack during your trip. It's small and easy to refer to anywhere.

Top 10: Paris - 5 stars

Safe travels,
Matthew Sherman

Dorling Kindersley's Eyewitness city guides bill themselves as "the guides that show you what others only tell you" and indeed, spectacular illustrations are one of their strongest points. Every page of an Eyewitness guide is filled with beautiful color photographs, maps, drawings and diagrams that bring popular tourist destinations to life. Each guide color-codes the city's districts or neighborhoods, making it easy for readers to know at a glance just where they are in the book--and where they want to go. Eyewitness Paris is typical of the series: a brief history of the city is followed by "Paris at a Glance" featuring the best museums, churches and parks; "Paris Through the Year," a description of the seasons; and "A River View of Paris" which takes the reader on a tour along the Seine. After this introductory section, Eyewitness Paris tackles the city of lights district by district, starting with Ile de la Cite and ending with Montmartre. At the back of the book is a lengthy section called "Travelers Needs" which includes extensive information about restaurants, hotels, shopping venues entertainment opportunities and special activities for children. The "Survival Guide" gives practical information about getting into and out of Paris, banking and postal services, safety, transportation, and more.

One of the best things about the Eyewitness series are the guided walks for each city. In Paris you have a choice of five 90-minute walks: around Parc Monceau, along the Canal St.-Martin, around the Ile St-Louis, in Auteuil or in Montmartre--the directions for each are clear, the sites well worth seeing, and each provides you with the best possible way of getting to know the city. Don't be deceived by Eyewitness Paris's picture-heavy format--this little picture book packs a lot of information! Don't leave home without it.

    Book Description

Explore the art and architecture of Notre Dame Cathedral, amble along the Canal St-Martin on one of the many walking tours, and learn how to master the Metro. From finding accommodations to the best French cuisine, the Traveler's Needs section lists hotels, restaurants, cafes, markets, entertainment, and a special section showcasing Paris for children. 4 out of 5 stars Definitely got my money's worth..........2005-11-30

This book has hooked me on the DK Eyewitness guides. I'm living in Germany right now and my whole family came to visit this past summer. Using this book, I took my sister, then later my grandmother around Paris. Finally this fall, my husband and I went.

The maps were good for helping us find the nearest Metro stations, as well as the roads. The Metro map in the back was a life saver. I could figure out our whole route and where to transfer just as we got onto the Metro.

I've noticed people complain these guides are a little heavy, but they must be packing VERY light. Since I already have to carry a diaper bag around, I throw the guide into the stroller bag for easy access and found it very manageable.

The only issues keeping it from a full 5 stars, are the road maps and location information. If you're staying outside of Paris, you need another map for your hotel. I wish the roads would stretch a little further, into the suburbs. Also, while the guide says it's updated yearly, some of the hours for certain locations were wrong. Supposedly Luxembourg Gardens were open until around 9pm. We barely arrived and were kicked out at 5pm. Also, the Louvre is open late two nights a week. The book had the wrong two nights. 90% of the times were accurate, but they messed up on some important ones.

Overall though, I definitely got my money's worth out of this book. And nothing to do with the guide, but I'm sick of Paris now. Going three times in the span of three months can be a bit of an overkill. :-)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent travel tool!.......2004-01-17

My wife and I went to Paris on our honeymoon and we had a fantastic time in that glorious city. One of the things that helped us enjoy more and that helped us take advantage of all the city has to offer was having this travel guide.

The Eyewitness travel guides are a step ahead of any other series of travel books because it not only includes the same information that the other have, but they also include additional information that is really great to know and have while abroad.

This guide has all the usual bits about he city: the top sites to visit (including work hours so as not to get there when they're closed!), how to move around (info on buses, Le Metro, trains, taxis, you name it), lists of shops and restaurants (with different price ranges and organized by location)and great street maps. It also has historic information on the city, which truly enriched our visit by helping us appreciate the places and sites we were visiting.

However, the greatest thing about the guide were the "walk routes", helpful suggestions on ways how to best go site seeing. Even if you don't follow them completely, they give you great ideas on where to go.

It also includes lots of information on sites outside of Paris, which are great to visit if you have the time.

All in all, an excellent travel tool!

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible! A Must-Have for those who truly wants to...........2003-09-30

    ...experience Paris.

It is a dream to use, very clear and user-friendly. The street-by-street maps were invaluable. There were also detailed maps and descriptions of individual sites (like museums, and Versailles) which guided you through the highlights of those sites.

I would use it constantly, so it was hardly ever in my bag. Even my husband, who is anti-guidebook, used it too! We ended up seeing and enjoying more of Paris than I could ever have imagined beacuse of the detail included in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Best Travel Book for Paris.......2003-04-22

I used almost this entire book while in Paris. The book gives great "walk routes" to make sure you see everything (for example, it features a walk through Pere Lechaise Cemetary). While you walk, it points out areas of interest and tells of the history. It also tells you which metro stop to get off, so all the areas in Paris and surrounding area are easily accesible. I will use this book again next time I visit France. If you dig old castles, check out Fontainebleau Castle, which is about an hour train ride out of Paris. This is the ultimate book for Paris travelers. It even has a "french phrase insert" for easy translation and speaking. This was my first time to Paris, I was meeting my best friend there, and for the most part I was alone and was not lost because of this book!

2 out of 5 stars Useful info but almost impossible to use.......2003-01-16

The book is a cute, appealing size. It lists many good bars, places to eat etc. But it has a major flaw: No matter how hard I searched through the book, I didn't see any mention of arrondissements, which are the various numbered neighborhoods.

Everyone in Paris and every map uses these numbers to direct you. "It's in the 14th." for example. Well, with this book I had to constantly reference other maps then locate the street and see which arrondissement the place was located in. I'm not just venting. I was really disappointed I had depended on this book as my only resource.

Additionally, because it combines neighborhoods - I assume to save space so it can maintain a petite, portable size - that is confusing as well and also prevented me from being able to map the named neighborhood to the arrondissement.

My recommendation? Bring this book only if you can bring another. It's really not worth the price considering the hassle.

This is a very nice book, because it tells you all the top 10 things in Paris, such as scenic spots, museum, parks, restaurants, walk, and galleries and so on. It also gives you a brief introduction of each place. It provides a map with each top 10 site marked so that you know where to find in Paris. Moreover, it is well printed and light-weighted.

In a word, it is a good choice for your first trip to Paris.

Decent book. But, I had purchased the eye witness guides in the past and thought this was the same, but was wrong. The eye witness ones are much better for what to do. This is more on shopping and food.

3 out of 5 stars Good travel planning read.......2005-11-02

This is a good book to read before visiting Paris. The whole book is made up of short reviews accompanied by a single photo of restaurants, cafes, shopping stores, and bars and clubs. If you're looking for hip places to go then look it over before your trip and make travel notes. The book is NOT a travel guide in any traditional sense, and you wouldn't find it worthwhile to lug it around Paris with you.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Handy -- but Heavy!.......2001-02-10

I purchased this before taking a spur-of-the-moment trip to Paris with my boyfriend, based on its excellent reviews on Amazon. I was not dissapointed!

This guide provided an incredible wealth of information about everything Paris -- from sights to see, places to eat, and things to do. Almost every site is accompanied with a nicely written description, map, and full-color photograph.

Here are a few notes: 1.) The information (allbeit interesting and informative) is about the touristy stuff. If you're interested in going to visit lesser-known sites, you may want to get a supplemental guide. 2.) Make sure to look up every place you go/have gone. I was surprised to found out that many of the seemingly understated little cafes we visited have long, rich histories, which the book very colorfully described. 3.) The restaurant guide, while good, is not entirely complete. If your visit will center on the French culinary experience, you may want to do a little additional research beyond the confines of this book. 4.) This leather bound special addition also contains 4 laminated, easy-reference information cards (menu reference sheet, address finder, Metro map) and a full-size city map, all of which were incredibly helpful and can not be purchased separately. 5.) The section about customs is good, as it contained valuable information on topics such as tipping and using the bathroom. (Interesting Fact: In many restaurants you have to *pay* to use the ladies room -- even if you have already purchased a meal or snack. Make sure to carry a handful of 2 Franc pieces with you at all times.) 6.) The book, though helpful, weighs a ton. Be prepared -- or beg one of your travel mates to carry it for you!

    Bon voyage!

5 out of 5 stars Eyewitness Travel Guide, Deluxe Edition: Paris - it's GREAT!.......2000-12-21

This guide is wonderful - I have never flown anywhere before and was very nervous about going to Paris, but after having this book for a week now I feel MUCH more confident! I am always opening it to look up more info - Theres so much in it I can't imagine how all that stuff can be in Paris!! I researched quite a few travel guides to Paris before buying this one and I am SO glad I chose this guide... it has detailed descriptions of each region, each monument, each street! Even comes with a menu card to help you figure out what you're about to order! haha... It gives detailed walking tours, bus routes, best times and price differences for visiting museums,... The very best part of this book though is the PICTURES!! There are pictures of everything and THAT makes it the best for me... What else can I say - if you're going to Paris - BUY THIS BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars The best guide book on the market - hands down.......2000-09-07

Dorling Kindersley makes the best travel guides hands down. They are extremely well illustrated, have extensive and detailed maps (thank god, because I tend to get lost very easily), up to date information on hotels (rates, rooms etc), restaurants (costs and reservation policies), and sites to see.

The travel guides have wonderful pictures, well researched histories and facts about France and more specifically Paris, what wines to look for and taste (not just by region and vineyard but also by year), sample dishes that one should try, detailed walking tours, information on famous art (there is a great section on the Louvre and all how to speed thru if you only have a limited amount of time).

The guide covers customs, money changing, travel information - you name it! Most importantly, it shares with you the best places to shop (and there are SO many in Paris), where to get good deals and SOOO much more. The book give you wonderful ideas on how to see the city in a limited time or really enjoy it if you are there for more than a few days. The book also covers things to do that many tourists might over look as well as telling you what is worth your while and what to skip. The guide also has great ideas for day trips beyond the city itself.

This is one of the best guides available on the market. It is perfect if you are planning to go to a few cities in a limited time or for more in depth information when planning a longer trip. We always lend this out to people before they plan a trip and everyone else has agreed it is top of the line.

5 out of 5 stars The Only Guide Book to Paris You Will Need!.......2000-06-04

I purchased numerous guide books before our trip to Paris, but the Eyewitness book was the only one I took with me. It is so comprehensive in its coverage of Paris, it was only book I needed. In it's handsome leather case, I felt comfortable refering to it on the bus and metro because it wasn't obviously a guide book. It didn't shout "tourist!" to everyone around me as I consulted it. Do not depend on the maps, however. Invest in a Michelin map of Paris; it's worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Eyewitness Travel Guid: Paris (Deluxe Leather Bound Edition).......2000-05-12

The eyewitness series is excellent. I own several of these books and we have used them on three different vacations to Europe. The book introduces you to Paris with background and historical information. A summary of seasonal happenings, weather, art, architecture and regional food information. The short essays are occpanied by pictures, maps, photos and graphic representations. It makes the book easy to read and a quick reference for planning daily activities while on vacation. The main section of the book has a break down of "regions" or areas. Each section starts with a map and locations of sights. You can then reference the specific site descriptions, which also include business hours and contact information. The back of the book list hotel and restuarant information. These books are an invaluable resource for planning a vacation itenenary. Also, they make an good refernce tool during your stay. The only negative I have found to these books is they are somewhat heavy to carry in your shoulder bag or packback all day long.
