Customer Reviews:
New York is not equal to Manhattan.......2007-08-07
I borrowed this book from a friend due to the fact that my NYC trip was unplanned. I usually am a Lonely Planet fan, but I was left with no choice but to use this one. I am impressed with the quality of the book, and yes, I do agree that this is one that can be browsed after the trip, and not forgotten in an attic. However, the coverage is completely restricted to Manhattan, and the rest of the boroughs are condensed into a "Farther Afield" section. New York City is not equal to Manhattan. Although most of the sights are in Manhattan, I am sure that there are plenty of other sights to see in the other boroughs as well.
Best guide .......2007-07-05
This guide lists information about NYC divided into areas of the city. There are great walking tours to use. Eyewitness makes the best guides for travelers.
What a Great Book.......2007-06-27
My family recently took a trip to New York. We had never been before, so I decided to buy this book to help us work our way around Manhattan and see the sights. I can say with 100% that this book was AMAZING! It's pictures and descriptions are right on, and the maps make it completely easy to find all of the points of interest. The subway maps helped to figure out the subway, and the dining list gave plenty of good restaurants to choose from! I love this book, and if I ever take another trip to a big city I will be sure to check and see if there is one of these books for it! Thank you!!
Lots of glossy pictures, but not very much information. .......2007-05-30
I am new to living in New York and was looking for a book with substance, as well as pictures illustrating the narrative. This book looked great, but I found it disappointing and ended up returning it. It does a nice job giving a visual overview of the city and attractions, but it fails to provide much depth via writing. If you are expecting any historical information or a description of the area beyond visuals, you will not be pleased.
I ended up buying the Insight City Guide (made by the Discovery Channel) of New York instead. I highly recommend it! It provides a number of big, glossy pictures, but it also contains writing to give the reader a greater sense of depth and understanding.
Accurate travel guide.......2007-04-03
Our family of four went to NYC for spring break and purchased the DK book beforehand to help plan our time wisely. Although we didn't leave Manhattan, the book covers all of the city very well. Maps are excellent, pictures are done in exquisite DK style. A must have for travelers. We also have the Paris one from a few years ago - made travel and sightseeing there much easier as well. Also a more compact size than some, making it easier to pack.

Customer Reviews:
The best book on New York .......2006-12-17
If you are going to be in New York City this is a great book to have. It is thorough and covers all of the areas you would want to see. The recommendations for hotels and restaurants are top notch. It includes an excellent subway map and has been useful on countless trips to the city.
Good--but know what you're getting.......2006-07-31
Many of the complaints that any guide book is going to generate from the necessity of condensing a colossal amount of information between the covers of a book with any sense of focus.
I think the Eyewitness Guides are excellent at breaking down an area very quickly and in a visual manner. You can look at a map and very quicly locate where you are without having to spin around and circles and get your bearings. They are also excellent in helping to decide which sites to visit (especially on a short trip) based on a picture (well, numerous ones) alone. There will be some information and some history--enough for some, not for others.
Do not use this book as a restaurant, hotel, or shopping gude. You'll be disappointed. Use this book to plan your trip and to carry around with you as you explore an area. New York has far too much to offer to attempt to make this a restaurant guide and a photo/map guide. This is also a great guide for someone who finds himself in NYC for an unexpected weekend (or one on short notice).
I personally have found that the combination of EyeWitness Guides for quick reference and the Blue Guide (the most comprehensive, historically and art/architectural driven book series out there) are a great combination for me. I'll read up in the Blue Book before my trip and carry it as a reference for when I return in the evenings. The Eyewitness goes with me wherever I go on the trip during the day. The book is made for this. Its covers are very sturdy and meant to take a beating in a backpack.
I couldn't care less about the cutaway pictures in these Eyewitness Guides, but most of the other pictures are useful and worth browsing through. As others have said, the basic survival necessities (subway tickets, etc...) are nice for a foreign visitor or someone uncomfortable in larger cities. The Eyewitness books are wonderful to take home with you and browse through after your trip to relive old memories.
Other recommendations: if you want to use a single guide book with more info, try the Michelin Guide (though I find the Eyewitness more intuitive to use in the field). Overall, I've been quite happy with this guide. If a picture is worth a thousand words, this book has saved quite a few trees--if you're into that sort of thing. ;)
Everything you need to know at your fingertips.......2006-03-03
This is a great resource. We are currently using it to plan a trip to New York. Everthing in it is accurate and timely. It is arranged in a manageable manner. In other words we love it.
New York Eyewitness Travel Guides.......2006-01-16
This book is marvellous and is a traveler's best friend. It's easy to read with lots of photos and colors and loads of information. Wouldn't travel without the Eyewitness guides.
Excellent Guide.......2005-12-19
I first discovered these books (a series Eyewitness Travel) by accident in a Stockholm bookstore. I had just come from Gothenborg by train and was a bit dazed. The book I bought by accident was in swedish but it still useful because of all the photos, cut away views, museum pictures, and maps and historical details. When I got home I bought a pile on Amazon.com of different places that I was going or had visited - but in english.
On a cold day back here in the USA (or Canada) or elsewhere, have a glass of beer and sit in a nice chair or in the garden on a warm day and read this book. For a moment you will be back in New Yotk at a deli have corned beef on rye.
The photos and desicriptions and cutaway drawings are excellent. Plus they throw in some history and details on the art and many other things of interest. A solid 430 page effort - lots of stuff to see and absorb. What is attractive about this book are the photos and cutaway views. Normally you do not see these. But the book brings it all to life with just magnificent photos and maps. And it makes a nice souvenir post trip. Subway maps included.

Customer Reviews:
A must have for any trip around New York City.......2006-12-17
For those traveling to New York City this is an essential guide to bring with you. The restaurant recommendations are top notch. The maps are detailed and a pocket subway guide is always helpful. Whether you are going in for a week or a weekend this is the guide you want to carry with you when you are out and about. You may want to use another guide if you are going in for a longer period of time for planning purposes but again this is the one you want to carry with you when you are in the city.
Subway.......2006-12-14
Great subway map! Just don't forget to read the signs in the subway, some trains only run certain days/times. AND if I remember correctly PATH is not really in the book.
Small, but full of useful information :).......2006-09-03
I visited NYC for the first time a few weeks ago. I took only three books about this city with me: this guide, the "Lonely planet NYC Guide", and "The Metropolitan Museum of Art Guide". Truth to be told, this guide is probably the only one I couldn't have done without.
"Top 10 New York" is an extremely useful small guide that doesn't have as much information as the "Lonely planet NYC Guide", but that has the essentials, and excellent fold out maps in color that are more easily understandable than those of other guides. I would like to highlight the fact that even though I am very absent minded, I could easily find my way in NYC thanks to those maps. And if I can, everybody will be able to do that!
From my point of view, this guide is ideal for those tourists that don't have a lot of time, and want to see as much as possible during their visit to NYC (specifically Manhattan), if possible without a tourist guide. "Top 10 New York" points out quite a few places you simply must go to in the city, but also tells you about different neighbourhoods, and their history. There are many photos in color that help you to decide what you want to do, and historic data that allows you to learn about this city.
Moreover, most visitors will find the insider tips for tourists helpful, and the planned walks and itineraries a good option. Other useful sections in this guide are, for example, "Best shopping districts", "Best hotels for every budget" (I found my hotel through Internet, though), "Best restaurants in each area" and "Most fun places for children". What is more, "Top 10 New York" is almost pocket-sized, so you can carry it with you everywhere, even if your purse is tiny (not my case!), or if you have bought too many things and your handbag is rather heavy (yes, that often happens to me).
All in all, I am very happy I bought this guide, and I strongly recommend it to you :)

Absolutely Terrific Guide.......2006-06-03
I've used this guide several times on trips to NY and it is absolutely terrific. Pocketable, beautifully illustrated, wonderfully organized. We went to two of the restaurants recommended and were totally pleased. Very easy to use and filled with useful information. Will add a lot to a visit.
Lots of pretty pictures but light on recommendations.......2004-07-27
The main reason why I buy these guides is for the recommendations (i.e. how to get from point A to point B, which hotels are best, etc.) Though this book provides a few pages of recommendations, it is more of a picture book on NYC. I agree that it will be a great souvenir and tells a lot of great little facts about buildings in the city. For something more practical (and less expensive), I recommend getting a NYC map and checking out the NYC tourist sites on the web.
Book Description
Every visitor to New York needs a good map and a good guidebook-now, for the first time, the two have been combined in a unique format at an unbeatable price. Perfectly sized to fit in a purse or back pocket, the Eyewitness Pocket Map & Guide is a fully illustrated guide to all the major sights-plus an ingenious fold-out map so you will never feel lost. The guide also includes restaurants, pubs, shops and a mini-phrasebook. It's all you need for a perfect day out and about-and for just $6.99.

My Son Loves This Book! .......2007-09-26
We're in the process of planning our first family vacation to New York and checked this book out from our local library to get our four year-old son excited about the trip. As the previous review indicated, the book needs to be updated but with that said, this book has nice pictures and kid-friendly, easy to understand information.
I think it's in bad taste.......2004-02-14
that the inside of the book prominently features the World Trade Center as it used to be. It should be updated. The rest of the book looks great - I love the Eyewitness guides, but this one needs a big refresh to be useful.

Great, but a little dated!.......2007-07-22
Real City Guides have replaced this series. I'm sure the web site has been updated, but I took the book with me to to New York and a few of the stores & restaraunts no longer existed. Be sure to get the newer Real City version or make sure you thoroughly check out the web site to stay up-to-date!
An Awesome Guide ..........2006-07-17
I really enjoyed using this guide and have recommended it to anyone taking a trip to New York. It has a wonderful selection of restaurants ... shopping options ... and things to see ... it is concise and has maps, while on numerous pages they guided us around easily one weekend. We carried it with us the entire trip and referred to it frequently. Can't wait for the e>>guide to Chicago to be published!
