GREAT book!.......2004-01-27
This book is a wonderful companion to any trip to Italy. The pictures are beautiful (what I would expect of National Geographic) and the information within the book is full of history. We went with a tour group and from reading the book, we were a step ahead on the guides information many times. It also suggests not only the major tourist sites to visit, but also out of the way sites that you might not hear about otherwise. I did give this book four stars because, like another reviewer said, it doesn't give too much information on accomodations and where to eat. Other books may be better for that.
The best thing about this book is that you can use it as a book of memories because of the pictures. I highlighted all the places my mom and I went. Hopefully I will return and hightlight the entire book!
Great Preparation Guide, not a getting around guide.......2002-11-26
What we love about the national geo series is that they entice you into getting ready for your trip. the photos, proposed walks and drives - these get a 5 out of 5. However, they are not good for finding a reasonably priced place to stay, eat, shop and in general finding your way around. For this I recommend a good road map and the Lonely Planet guide. We did 14 days Italy driving from Rome through Tuscany to Florence and the Nat'l Geo guide was essential for planning the trip.
The Best Italy Travel Guide Ever.......2001-06-27
I just returned from a two-week trip to Italy with my family. My sisters and I had bought every guide to Italy possible - except this one. My father brought this National Geographics' version of a travel guide to Italy with him - and it was the one guide that we all fought over. The color pictures in this guidebook were amazing. Not only did it list everything interesting to see in a variety of different towns in Italy - it described the history and myth behind everything that you were seeing (and this is what is missing from most tour books in my opinion). The book even included interesting side sections, such as one on the old fashioned "Grand Tour of Europe". It was a pleasure to read about places that we never even made it to on our trip. This is a wonderful book to use during travel in Italy - or even as an interesting coffee table book. (The paperback version is light to carry and fits in a large pocketbook). Now that we have returned home and that the well used book is back in my father's possession, I am thinking of buying my own version just for memories (the pictures in the book I know will be better than the ones I took myself.) P.S. The book also includes a practical section that lists great hotels and restaurants.

Birthplace of pizza and a treasure-trove of museums, art galleries, and medieval palaces, Naples is the centerpiece of National Geographic's all-new Traveler guide to southern Italy. The book points you to the city's best spots, then heads to Pompeii and Herculaneium, the Amalfi Coast, and fabled Capri and other offshore islands. Also on the itinerary are Puglia, filled with unusual trulli, Basilicata, Campania, and Calabria, along with excursions to Sicily and Sardiniatwo fascinating islands whose rich art, culture, language, and history are fiercely separate from those of the mainland.

This is a great book. I borrowed it from my library first and then had to have my own copy. Great glossy pictures. Great suggestions. A great buy.

Good guide, but competition is very tough.......2002-11-03
I liked National Geographic guide to Venice - it is colourful and cheerful; and it reads like it is written by someone who actually spent quite a while in the magnificient city. I appreciate the writing style which betrays an experienced travel writer rather than a bland-and-inoffensive travel book producer. This is a very good book and worth the money.
However, the market of Venice guides is incredibly crowded, and with such formidable all-rounders as DK Eyewitness guide I would find it difficult to recommend National Geographic as the first choice.
Nevertheless, if you are willing to do extensive reading-in before your trip and are willing to buy more than one guide, this is definitely one to consider (I would also recommed City Secrets). Pictorial part is superb and it is evident they pull all the stops when commissioning original and fresh location photography - you don't get tired shots of St Mark's square and black gondolas that seem to adorn every travel brochure or ticket booking website.
In addition, it is obvious that the writer went through all the trouble of finding off-beat, rarely-quoted facts that make reading rewarding and enjoyable. Just as well, because who needs another guide quoting Napoleon's words about "most elegant drawing room of Europe"?
The National Geographic is not particularly notable for practicalities - but then again, it could be just the job for a second-time traveller who is familiar with all the intricacies of airport transfers and avoiding overpriced eateries near St Mark's Square.
Overall - firm four stars, and a definite recommendation as a supplementary guide.

It then heads to southern Piedmont with its lush, rolling, vine-covered landscapes, including a stop in the medieval town of Alba. Northeast of Turin, Lake Maggiore and the other lakes offer a mixture of breathtaking scenery and culture that has drawn the rich and famous for centuries. Finally, in the northern mountains, travelers will discover the fabled Valle d'Aosta, a stunning valley featuring fairy-tale castles, Roman remains, and plenty of skiing.
Several detailed sections filled with practical travel information include extensive lists of handpicked hotels and restaurants and insider tips on the best tours. With meticulous maps and lavish photography, the National Geographic Traveler guides ensure exciting and memorable trips.

Beautiful Pictures and Wonderful Information.......2007-02-05
This bookguide focuses on Turin, Piedmont, The Aosta Valley and Liguria.
It includes one walking tour of Turin's historic center and three driving tours: The Langhe Region, Lake Maggiore and The Aosta Valley. It also includes articles on interesting facts: Cafe Life, Fiat, Contemporary Art, The Slow-Food Movement, Truffels, The Gardens of Lake Maggiore and Giuseppe Mazzini.
I didn't give it 5 starts because I think it should've featured at least one more walking tour of Turin and maps of other cities (Aosta and Genoa for example). Besides, all the hotels listed are rather expensive, so this isn't a bookguide for those who travel on a budget.
In general, it's quite good, so I highly recommend it.

Great Series.......2002-05-12
I have a few of these National Geographic Traveler books. This is a great series of books. This one on Florence and Tuscany is my favorite. The images and thick glossy paper make these books really stand out. After reading the one on Florence I was hard pressed to actually go there because I felt like I saw everything there is to see from the pictures in the book. The maps are great and make getting around the cities easy. I have been through Tuscany a lot in the past year and this is the only guide book I've used.

Excellent before trip book.......2005-03-14
Lots of strong colour photographs, very good artwork/floor plans of sites, excellent descriptions of the sites that take their time and really describe the place, it's feel and art. You could carry this with you in the streets as you went from place to place, or use it in your hotel room to review where you are going or what you have seen, or a good book to read while sitting at a cafe in Rome taking a break from sightseeing.
There is no map section in the back, the maps are given but chapter/city section. For some reason the books lists the time in the middle of the day the site would be closed, but does not list opening closing times (that needs to be changed). The hotel & restaurant listings are very good,
The book has a nice feel to it: Good looking, well written, informative. this is a book you would leave in your bookcase long after the trip is over.
Extremely Helpful ~ Great Buy.......2004-07-19
I am very picky with my travel guides and I think this was the best purchase I ever made. I expected the beautiful pictures; however, the content was also amazing. I personally prefer more than a 4 line blurb about an attraction and in this book, I found there were amazing detailed descriptions for each place I visited to identify the history, important characteristics and must see items. The maps were very helpful while navigating each district and the recommendations were well suited.
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC travel book very similar to travel shows.......2002-04-23
your typical travel guidebook (a little on the heavy side) with the most detail oriented information at your disposal. good for the plane ride over to italy, it's full of information about everything you wanted to know about rome, starting with history and culture. the guidebook is not very practical for pulling out of your sack especially if your burdened with cameras and other heavy travel items. the book is very very very informative and true to national geographic, chock full of beautiful pictures! this guidebook offers a series of walking tours with national geographic as your guide; extremely useful if you have the time to walk and read as you go! while travelling i found it a little difficult to find the maps when i needed them (during those vacation rush periods). this book is useful for reference; with every point of interest explained thoroughly.
Rome: I feel like I'm There Already.......2000-11-29
Unable to locate a Michelin Green Guide of Rome at my local bookstore, I opted for the National Geographic Traveler Guide of Rome instead. Being a long time fan of the magazine, I felt it was a good bet. I was thoroughly delighted with what I found in its pages: beautiful photographs, of course, along with wonderfully concise history and details for everything I wanted to visit and more. I am mainly interested in the art and architecture of Rome, and this guide does not disappoint. My friend, who was born and raised in Italy, living in Rome for over eight years, was equally impressed. He found several new discoveries for himself. There are many clear maps, as well as a practical section called Travelwise, rating hotels and restaurants and providing informative advice for transportation, shopping and entertainment. Although my primary purpose for buying a guide was to have enough information to be able to choose what to fit into a visit of only a few days, I found this guide to be so well written and put together that I will keep and reread it in years to come.

THE best general travel guides.......2007-05-13
National Geographic started this series of travel guides a few years back, and, after 16 years of leading student tours to Europe and trying other popular travel publications, I can highly recommend the NG series. The maps are some of the best in this category and I especillay appreciate the way the authors/editors divide cities and countries into easily digestible and fun to use sections. Another plus are the suggested walking tours. If you're heading across the pond, these are the travel guides to invest in.
