Took a power trip out west and this book came in quite handy. I liked the feature "what not to miss". Quite often we went straight to that box to determine what sights to see. We will use this book on future wild west trips. (-;

Disappointing.......2006-11-25
The National Geographic name prompted me to buy this book, but I was very disappointed. Yes - it covers the major roads through the park and briefly describes the features along those roads. But it never really describes why you might want to go on specific roads, what the most important sights or features are, and what might happen if you got out of the car and actually wanted to see something.
On the plus side, the maps are detailed and list features with short descriptions.
This book is far too basic. I returned it within 24 hours and will look for something better.

This is laid out like the AAA strip maps, each strip covering 5 to 15 miles, with a large-scale map on the inside front cover as an index to the strips. The strips indicate where the turnouts are for a stop, and are a useful guide to the terrain as you drive along each of the Glacier Park roads. No data for hiking, camping, accomodations, etc. but restroom and restaurant locations are given.

Beautiful Book - but Make sure it is what you want.......2006-06-23
This is a typically well designed and beautifully illustrated book from the National Geographic Society. It is great to flip through and grabs your attention. Note though, this is not really a guide to just the National Parks of Alaska. It is more a guide to all the wild areas and tourist sites of Alaska as they relate to the eight National Parks in the state.
For example, of the 42 pages dedicated to Denali National Park, 12 were about the park itself (of which 3 were full page illustrations) 30 pages of the chapter were dedicated to "Exursions from the National Park." This included everything from briefly describing Fairbanks and Talkeetna to a description of the Yukon-Charley Preserve on the Canandian border.
It is a great book, and well worth it for someone looking for a reference to put together an multi-day itinerary based around one of the parks, but if you are looking for more in-depth information about a certain park, you may want to pick up a different reference. On the other hand, if you love nature, Alaska and beautiful photos, this might be a book for you.

Great Photographs, Great Guide.......2002-03-09
This guide gives very specific directions to the many attractions, and I am impressed by the quantity of entries. My only problem is that so much of the book covers the Northern areas of MN, WI, and MI (e.g., upper p). All very beautiful and definitely the best of the best of the area, but I would enjoy seeing some more convenient locales.

We just returned from a lovely road trip to the Rocky Mountain National Park, using this book as our guide. It was extremely helpful, loaded with information, easy to use and well written. We give it our highest recommendations.

GREAT PICTURES BUT SHORT ON MYSTERY.......2005-03-29
This NG guide is rich with photos of the canyon's majesty, vegetation, and wildlife, but short on history. Much of the book detailed the author's voyage down the river. Having bought this book at the Grand Canyon I can say with authority that the photos in no way capture the beauty and magnificence of the Canyon. While there I couldn't stop staring into it and walking around to various views. The light of the day changes everything and gives a whole new perspective. Looking down into the canyon calls you to explore. One day I'm hiking down there.
There is much more mystery and intrigue to the Grand Canyon than is contained in this book. Overall, just OK.

Gorgeously photographed with attention to detail.......2002-08-22
I have bought several of these National Geographic guides and they are all fabulous. The photography makes me want to start vacationing right away. I plan to visit many of the places in these guides when I retire in two years and I am very happy that I discovered these guides. One should not plan a trip to the great outdoors without reading these guides. The details of each site, such as hiking trails, are extremely useful. By the way, nobody can match Amazon for both price and service on these guides.
