Great guide.......2007-05-17
I bought this guide for a 3 day trip to London. It was very useful for the detailed descriptions of places to go, when they are open, how to get there etc. For a quick guide i used "The London Mapguide: 5th Edition." This helped me get around the streets and just generally wonder around or look for a place to eat. If you're looking for a book to plan the trip for you, i would use the "Idiot's Guide to London." This book has suggestions for a 3 day, 7 day etc trip to London with all the thinking done for you.

Some useful information, but severely lacking in many areas.......2006-05-29
I bought this book after accepting a job in London in 2005. After living in London for several months, I can now reflect on my relocation experience and say that this book only provided me with limited guidance.
This book attempts to provide a grand overview on the challenges that expatriates will face when they relocate to London. The book does present a broad overview of the many things expatriates need to do when relocating to London. For example, it does thoroughly explain the work permit and visa process, and it gives plenty of information on setting up utilities in a new home. It also provides some warnings about situations unique to London, such as the viscious, unregulated real estate market, and it provides some tourism information as well.
Additionally, the book provides multiple comparisons of the London boroughs, and the first section of the book provides summary information on each one. However, the summaries are frequently too short to provide a good overview of some of the more diverse boroughs, and some of the criticisms are overly harsh (as they were for Hammersmith and Fulham).
The book has a few major faults. The greatest major fault is that it fails to provide vital information needed for relocation. It does not explain how to solve the permanent housing / bank account / job paradox (where, to acquire one of these things, an individual must already have the other two). This alone significantly weakens the book. However, the book also does not provide information on other things as well. For example, it explains nothing about acquiring a credit card or building up a credit rating in the United Kingdom (which can be frustratingly difficult for a U.S. citizen). It provided some information on dentists, but it did not explain how to sign up with a dentist. It also does not explain U.K. taxes, which are very different from U.S. taxes. While this book does provide information on shopping, the shopping information is oriented towards tourists with high incomes, not residents with low or mid-level incomes.
Aside from the lack of information on important topics in this book, I also dislike it for already being out-of-date (or unfairly biased), even though it was published in 2004. Some of the criticisms of some boroughs are already out-of-date, possibly biased by older impressions from the last century. Many websites suggested by the book either have not been updated for months or are not functional. Also, the transportation information is woefully obsolete, as the Underground in particular has changed (and improved) significantly since the book's publication. I can only imagine that many sections of the book that I have not examined closely also provide dated information.
In conclusion, I would only recommend this book as a supplement to London relocation information rather than as a prime source of information. It simply fails to answer many crucial questions (especially questions about the residence/banking/job paradox), and too much of the information either seems biased or obsolete.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Ideas .......2006-02-19
I really loved this book for ideas on places to take your kids in London and the information provided for each site was outstanding. For example #41: Legoland, lets you know exactly how to get there whether you take a train or bus and helpful tips on how to get the most of of the experience. This book relates much more details and relevant info than the "For Kids" sections of regular travel books. Those travel books are still a "must have" but this book makes a good companion to cover all your bases. The only problem I had with this book was that most of the pricing info and some operational hours were not up-to-date and incorrect. As long as you keep in mind that this book refelects 2004 data, you are good to go. I also did not agree with some of their restaurant recommendations, but that is strictly a matter of taste so I didn't deduct any points. In any case, this book provides invaluable advise if you are traveling with kids. Each section is well thought out and answers most questions you might have while traveling. Why didn't anyone think of this earlier? We traveled to Germany two years ago and really could of used a book like this to make our trip less stressful in the planning stages.
Great book when planning your trip.......2004-06-14
This book is great when planning out trip to London. They give great info (tube stop, hours, cost, places to eat, etc) but they also gave age information. They told you the ages each place was appropriate for and things to think about before going there.
The only book my daughter will read.......2003-11-07
We are planning a trip to London and I bought a couple of books for my daughter and me to plan our trip. This one, however, is the only one she'll look at. The quick snipits about the cool stuff and the ideas for what to look out for have captured her attention. We love the places to eat close to the attractions, too.
A winner!
Terrific addition to guide books.......2002-11-09
With so many competing guide books on the market, especially to popular destinations like London, product differentiation appealing to different sectors of the market is necessary to stay in the race.
This is in the same series as Fodor's Around Paris With Kids, and is a welcome foray into this market from a travel guide publisher long though to be the exclusive preserve of the well-heeled and unadventurous traveller.
This book is a handy accompaniement to a visit to London for anyone with children.
The information is useful, the size is wholly convenient. Nothing glossy, no photos, no pictures at all. I have borrowed all the glossy stuff from the library to read ahead of time, and anything useful have put as margin notes in THIS book, because this is the one I plan to have along. It tells you how to get to each place, opening hours, what to see and do there. Includes information on attractions especially for kids, as well as all the conventional tourist sites, museums etc, emphasising the aspects that are most likely to appeal to kids.
If you are a first-time visitor to London you may feel more comfortable having a good, conventional guide book along as well, but if you don't need the basics AND you have children along with you, I reckon you'll want to have this book above all others.

Adventure, excitement, and ripping yarns.......2007-06-08
I remember when I was younger; I loved reading classic literature in comic form. It was often the impetus to get me to actually go out and find the book and read it so I could get the full benefit of all the things that were left out of the graphic version. However, I found that reading the graphic version often primed me to see the story in my head as I read based on the artist's vision. With Graphic Classics: Jack London instead of a novel you have eleven short stories each adapted and illustrated by various authors and artists. Some stories are heavily illustrated with the art work taking the weight of the storytelling others have one or two drawings to set the stage for the story.
In each case the artwork and narrative dovetail to set the scene and tell the story. The artwork differs for each story reflecting the 'feeling' of the tale -- rough, noir, light-hearted, polished, fantastical -- the art sets the stage for the story.
For myself, I liked some of the stories and others left me a bit upset with the author. That's, however, not a fault of the editor, the artists, or those who adapted the story -- it's the fault of Jack London. I've read most of his novels and as I get older I have less tolerance for his low opinion of women -- most of the time his male characters see women as a tool to be used rather than another human being. For example, "The Wit of Poportuk" is the story of a young native American girl who is raised and schooled at a convent who wishes to marry a man of her own choice. She escapes Porportuk's schemes to marry her several times -- outwitting him and running away. Although the main character is El-Soo, the story is named for Poportuk and his revenge after her last escape.
Otherwise, the stories are what you'd expect of Jack London -- adventure, comedy, observations on the human condition, and daring do. Included in this volume are "The Red One", adapted by Tom Pomplun and illustrated by Mark Nelson, about an adventurer who risks it all to find out what makes the bell-like sound that he hears coming from the interior of the land. "Jan the Unrepentant" drawn by Hunt Emerson is a comic tale of two men who are trying to hang a third for the murder of their friend -- only the friend may not actually be dead. Other stories are "To Kill A Man", "Just Meat", "The Handsome Cabin Boy", "That Spot", "War", "The Francis Spaight", "How I became a Socialist" which is really an essay but very interesting reading, "Moonface", and "A Thousand Deaths".
Overall, this is a great introduction to Jack London and his stories. While for all ages, it's a great way to get reluctant readers a taste of literature in a format they can appreciate.
Weird and Wild tales from an American master.......2007-01-24
Think of Jack London, and the image springs to mind of racing dog packs racing over icy Alaskan landscapes, fighting fang and fur in a primitive struggle for life. On the reading list of almost every American school system, "The Call of the Wild" is a classic of American literature.
And there it stops. Aside from "The Call of the Wild," I was totally ignorant of Jack London's works. I never knew his clever since of humor, or his ability to delve into mystery and unknown lands. He always seemed an author very much grounded in hard reality.
Graphic Classics has again taken a treasured author and produced some fantastic adaptions of his lesser-known yarns. Editor Tom Pomplun has a great eye at matching artistic style to the tone of the story that makes each collaboration a treat. He also picked a wide selection of London's stories, showing a breadth of talent that most readers were not aware of.
This collection features:
The Red One - A classic pulp adventure tale featuring head-hunters, native romance and a massive, unearthly artifact that pules with an ominous sound. This one would have been right at home in Weird Tales. Artists Mark A. Nelson keeps the art rough and realistic, just the way it should be.
Jan, the Unrepentant - A very funny little short story about a group of rascals, and frontier justice. Hunt Emerson gives it just the right comedic touch.
To Kill a Man - This one has almost a Sherlock Holmes feel to it, dealing with a thief and a woman who has to learn if she has what it takes to kill a man. Nice moody adaptation by Rod Lott.
Just Meat - The hard reality of what it means to be human, as a pair of thieves divvy up their loot. Onsmith Jeremy takes a cartoony approach that suits the tone.
The Wit of Poportuk - Now this feels like Jack London. A beautiful Indian maiden is desired by a poor man, whom she loves, and a rich man, whom she hates. Her will proves to be stronger than both of them, but there is a power that even she must bow to. Arnold Arre gives the yarn exactly the edge it needs.
The Handsome Cabin Boy - After the last hard-edge tale, this one is another comical piece, adapted from an old folk song about a cabin boy who is a girl who is a boy who is a...a good laugh at the end, with some good Victorian-style illustrations by Anne Timmons
That Spot - A dog story! Another funny piece about the toughest and laziest dog of the Yukon. Nick Miller draws a clever adaptation.
War - A text-and-pictures adaptation. Hard-edged and sorrowful, with lovely pictures by Peter Kuper.
The Francis Spaight - A true tale of the high seas, and what men are capable of when the chips are truly down. John W. Pierard gives it a taste of salty hell.
How I Became a Socialist - A personal essay on how Jack London became a socialist against his very will. Another text-and-pictures adaptation, with art by Spain Rodriguez
Moon Face - A dark and funny story about a man who is so happy that people want to kill him, because they just can't stand someone who smiles that much. Milton Knight brings his usual flair to this one, and it is just right for his talents.
A Thousand Deaths - A mad scientist tale of a man who kills his son over and over again, bringing him back to life each time all in the name of science. J. B. Bolivert's unique style is really great on this one, which is quirky and calm considering the subject matter
