Great Travel Book.......2007-10-09
This is a great travel book. I just got back from a week vacation to Rome. I got this as a gift and if I had my choice, I would have gotten the guide for Rome alone. However, this book still had a great deal of detail and helped me plan my trip. The pictures are beautiful and only served to heighten my enthusiasm to go. What really made the book great was the background information about the sites. I enjoyed site seeing so much more knowing the history and importance of the sites. The book also gives recommendations for places to stay and eat and a survival guide for your travels in Italy. I was impressed by the DK Eyewitness Travel series and will look for it on my next trip.
Italy (Eyewitness Travel Guide) review.......2007-09-21
Very good for traveling through Italy. We stayed in 5 different cities over 10 days. We looked at this book every day to help us decide what we wanted to do in each city.
Dependably good.......2007-07-23
I have bought or borrowed several Eyewitness Travel Guides in the past several years, and have carried them all over Europe. They are a bit heavyweight, but I enjoy reading them berfore, during, and after the visit. The graphics are great and the layout is logical.
Great book...lots of pictures.......2007-05-28
Great book for preparing for a trip. It's a bit heavy so I wouldn't carry it around while touring but otherwise ok.
THE BEST GUIDE EVER!.......2007-05-14
I have orderd several travel guides and this is the BEST! "DK Eyewitness Travel" guides are always amazing. It has everything I was looking for with maps, colorful photos, great historical lessons, bus and tram routes, color coded sections, shopping suggestions, survival guide, and much more. MOST TRAVEL GUIDES ONLY HAVE SMALL BORING WRITING PIECES.... this one was amazing with details that were interesting and visual effects that made me want to visit each part of Italy!

Too bad the essence of Rome can't be bottled and exported to a corner store near you. If it could, you could pick up a weekend's worth of Rome along with your pint of milk and Snickers bar, and you'd probably never get to repainting the stairs, doing the laundry, or watching that new video release. Instead you'd be gawking at St. Peter's, ogling the Temple of Vesta, devouring saltimbocca in a trattoria, and sipping Sangiovese at a wine bar. You might not even get to the Snickers bar. Okay, DK never said they're trying to bottle Rome. But they do a stand-up job of imbuing their guidebook with the spirit, attitude, and élan of Rome. They don't just provide information about where to stay and what to do when you're there (though they do, in fact, provide all those necessary details), they go beyond the pragmatic and mundane to revel in Rome's glory. They stimulate the appetite for a Roman holiday. The gorgeous pictures and engaging text draw you in. They inspire you to read and dream, set your travel date, and visit Rome for real. --Stephanie Gold
Book Description
This book divides central Rome into 16 areas and has further sections for sights on the outskirts of the city; including some day trips as well as some suggested walks. Each of the main areas has its own chapter and contains a selection of sights that convey some of its history and distinctive character. The bird's-eye view maps, photographs, 3-D aerial views of Rome's most interesting districts, the floor plans of all the major sights and the huge selection of hotels, restaurants, shops and entertainment venues separate this guide from all of the rest. The Eyewitness Travel Guide helps you to get the most from your stay in Rome.

Eyewitness Top 10 Guides Are the Best!.......2007-09-27
If you are traveling to a city and spending only a short time (3 or less days) you need nothing more than an Eyewitness Top 10 Guide. I will never go anywhere without one. It categorizes and boils things down, but the print is large enough to read. If you will be spending longer in your destination (for instance you are studying abroad) you will want a more comprehensive guide. Don't hesitate to buy any of the Eyewitness Top 10 Guides -- I have 3 of them.

IF YOU INTEND TO GO TO ROME THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU ANSWERS ALL YOU COULD ASK
excellent book.......2007-08-07
the top 10 guides are the greatest books for traveling. they give the top 10 of everything you would like to know-sights, resturants, hotels. we traveled through europe and book several different types of books and the top 10 were our favorites! some of the info is a little off like the hours of the collsium and the prices of somethings so i would confirm
The Gold Standard for Travel Guides.......2007-07-30
Lavishly illustrated and easy to follow. Presents a logical division of the city and groups attractions accordingly. Information is accurate and up-to-date. Clearly it's a popular guidebook, as evidenced by the number of Americans visibly carrying it in the city. Pair it with Frommer's Italy and you're covered.
Gave great advice.......2007-07-23
This little book was our bible on a recent trip to Rome. I will always be grateful that DK included San Clemente in their top 10. This amazing little church is like a layer cake of fascinating things to see. The street level is a lovely 12th century church with beautiful floors, columns, and frescoes. Underneath is an excavated 4th century church that includes a frescoe with the first sentence ever written in Italian: "Fili de le pute traite", or "Pull, you sons of whores!" I kid you not. This level also includes the tomb of Saint Cyril, creator of the Cyrillic alphabet, and a wonderful tombstone with a pagan inscription on one side, and on the other, an early Christian inscription -- it was recycled! They have it set up so you can flip it over to see both sides. Finally, the bottom level has ancient ruins, including a Mithraic (pagan) shrine.
The only time the book let us down was its recommendation of Da Augusto, a restaurant in Trastevere. This was their #1 listing under "Cheap Eats" for Trastevere but it was the only unappetizing food we were served in our whole trip.

Customer Reviews:
Perfect As Usual.......2007-07-18
I have become such a fan of the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides that I never use anything else anymore. They are full of historical information, maps, area by area tips for sightseeing and guides to hotels, restaurants and shopping. They give you good information about traveling to and from, as well as, in and around your destination cities. My favorite thing about these guides is that they give you photograps of the different sites they recommend. I have had occassion to see a photograph of something I hadn't intended to see, been intrigued, and gone out of my way to see it. I've never been disappointed with these guides and this one for Florence and Tuscany are no exception. A great feature of these guides is that they also give maps of the inside of larger buildings such as cathedrals. This is very important in places that have specifically interesting or important pieces of artwork you'd like to see.
If you are traveling with a tour group it is especially nice that you can see what might be available to see in a smaller place you stop for only a few hours. The guide will lead you right to it and you don't waste your time wandering (unless wandering is what you love). Definitely study these guides before you leave. You're trip will be enriched.
Another thing I love about these guides that I've never seen in other guides is a list, complete with pictures, of the different foods that are native to where you're traveling and what the dish is made from. As I am not a particularly adventurous eater, this is very comforting!Florence and Tuscany (Eyewitness Travel Guides)
If you are an armchair traveler these are also great. With the photos and facts you will feel as if you've traveled to your dream destination.
The best overall guide available.......2007-07-03
There is no such thing as the perfect guidebook, but after 13 years of using them I've been most impressed by the Eyewitness series. I used the Rome book in college when I went there for 6 weeks, the London book when I lived in the UK for two years, and I bought the latest edition of the Rome and Florence/Tuscany books this year for my Italian honeymoon. I also brought along Rick Steves and Blue Guide to field-test them, but I used Eyewitness the most by a long shot. Rick Steves is very good for practical travel tips, but little else. Blue Guides are very good for historical/artistic/architectural detail, but they can be cumbersome and aren't the easiest to use while traveling. I made a point to notice which guides other travelers were using around Italy, and I saw Eyewitness guides far more than any other, carried in an amazing variety of language editions by travelers from all over the world.
Eyewitness guides are colorful, filled with photos, easy to carry, user-friendly, and they have great city maps. They provide a comprehensive overview that lets you decide what you want to see. They're also very durable and hold up extremely well in the rain. Foldout covers on front and back provide very handy bookmarks. They have their downsides too, of course: the restaurant and hotel recommendations are hit and miss (as with most guidebooks), the books are not always updated annually, and the short Italian dictionary in the back is all but useless.
This book will guide you to the places you most want to see in and around Florence. It won't tell you a lot about them when you get there, but for many travelers it's more than enough. I like to have more historical, artistic and architectural detail handy when I travel to a place like Italy, so I also travel with the much more detailed Blue Guides. If you're only going to bring one guidebook, I recommend Eyewitness.
Great Guide for detailed travel.......2007-06-15
I recently used this guide during a six-day stay in Florence, with side trips to Prato and Siena. The maps were wonderful, the descriptions helpful, the hints on using buses, trains, electricity, tipping, etc. were practical. The layout diagrams of the top sites showing the interiors of buildings and floorplans seem to be a unique feature of the Eyewitness Guide series -- they are a wonderful to orient oneself within a building. The guide greatly enhanced my trip. And, after my trip, it's been helpful in getting my images in order and identified.
I like this one a little better than Rick Steve's.......2007-05-25
Having read both and used as a planning guides for an Fall 2007 trip, I think this one is a bit better. There are some other great reviewers here to read, and I can only add having both will not hurt you in your preparations for Florence and the Tuscany area. I do beleive Rick Steve's is better on the restaurant reviews. I also recommend using both books to do internet searches of hotels and restaurants. You'd be surprised how many establishments have websites so you can see if you want to stay or eat at certain places.
A Great Guide.......2007-05-05
My family and I just returned from Tuscany and found this guide to be invaluable. The maps, diagrams and pictures are top notch. Although some of the historical and artistic themes are only covered briefly (e.g. the Medici family, Dante, Mannerist painting, etc) it is sufficient to give you a general sense of the key themes and players. The rest is up to you.
What was also particularly useful was the restuarant guide and off the beaten track locations such as Saturnia. Even though I'm moderately fluent in Italian the mini phrase book at the back came in handy. I couldn't remember how to say duck in Italian (l'anatra), and was surprised to find it in the guide.
If you're even remotely considering buying a Florence and/or Tuscany guide, look no further, this is the guide for you.

Great for on-the-go.......2007-05-01
My wife and I love the Top 10 series. We always buy a Frommers or Rick Steves book for the trip's planning, but the Top 10 is a must for the trip itself. It'll fit in a pocket (a long one), and will provide quick and easy references to the most important sights, as well as maps and public transportation routes.
Top 10 Guide.......2006-02-23
The guide is a good compliment to Eyewitness: Italy, more so than the individual book on Florence.
LOVE IT! Perfect size - essential information to take with you on a trip........2006-01-15
Buongiorno!
I recommend all the Eyewitness Travel guide books to anyone who is planning a trip to Italy. I give this book as a freebie to all my clients who sign up for the tours of Tuscany that I lead each year. They can take it with them to all the day trips - it's light, without compromising the quality of images and useful information on the most beautiful stops in Tuscany.
Being from Italy (Florence to be exact), I was surprised to see how accurate and easy to find the information was, while at the same time, keeping it concise and essential.
If you'd like a more thorough book on all of Italy, I recommend the "Italy" guidebook, which is also by DK Eyewitness travel. However this last one is not light, and you may have to leave it home before going on your trip. Full of useful information.

Great guidebook!.......2007-01-14
This book was very helpful to read before going to Milano and Lago Maggiore.
I admit we did not do a whole lot of sightseeing at the lake, as it was a relaxing vacation vs. a run-around-and-see-stuff vacation. However, the information provided was substantial.

The eyewitness books are very good guiding books and Milan & the lakes did not dissapoint me. It is going to be very useful when I go to Milan.

Naples & the Amalfi Coast (Eyewitness Travel Guides) by DK Publishing.......2007-03-13
I have not received this book. I received the wrong book from Frugal Media on Thursday. I e-mailed them on Thursday March 8, 2007 and still have not heard from them. They sent me "Maple V Quick Reference" book in error. I still need this book for travel in April (2007). Can you help me?
Mostly Naples, just a little of Amalfi coast towns.......2007-02-20
I was hoping to get some more info. on the Amalfi coast towns, as that's where I'm visiting this summer. The coverage of Naples is extensive, which of course, is the lead part of the title. But "and the Amalfi coast" was also thrown in there, and for my interests, the towns of Positano, Praiano, Amalfi and Ravello occupied a total of 2 pages in a 250 page book. Sorrento got another 2 pages. That being said, the overall book is beautifully produced with lots of photos, maps, and careful drawings of key buildings. It's slim, easy to carry in your bag, and the text is an easy read, nothing overly confusing here. I think if you're looking for Naples info. mostly then this is your book. It would deserve 5 stars for that.
DK EYEWITNESS HISTORY AND GUIDE OF NAPLES AND THE ALMALFI COAST EDITION 2005.......2005-10-17
QUICK INFORMATION:
The Dk Eyewitness travel guide is firstly what it says it is - A Guide. It is there to help you with advice to resource you with useful information for your forth-coming travels. I have used several DK Eyewitness Guides, as there is a vast range and found them to be useful for my certain plan of action. I have especially used these while travelling in Italy.
These Guides I would suggest are for the following - if you are combining a holiday with a spot of sightseeing, require a history element, maybe taking off and having you own little adventure, wish to partake in travelling in your own style by bus, hydrofoil or train this is the guide for you. I do not advise this particular guidebook for backpackers or people travelling off the beaten track. There is no hidden treasure here for you.
Second quick checkpoint when purchasing an edition of this book, please check that you have the most recent and up to date version.
Example: I was using edition 2005 but had notice this certain edition had not been updated since 2003. a necessary factor of any travel guide is to require the latest information most editions of these books are usually updated yearly.
BOOK OVERVIEW:
This book is extremely well planned and laid out, even showing you how to use this book guide. It covers History, Art, Architecture,Culture, as well as Churches, Volcanoes, Museums, Roman ruins, Islands and Beaches. It starts with an introduction to Naples, Followed by Naples area by area. it comes with a survival guide of practical information on travel and has a Naples map and street finder.
Each section of this book has been broken down; an area of Naples has been mapped out and numbered for the items of tourist interest, where to go, location, places to see or an object being described with a picture. It also shows interior and exterior of buildings with photographs and illustrated design. This book has beautiful glossy pages; it is not just for reading its showing you. What I loved was the fact that it had a visitors checklist such as opening times of shops, museums, etc. Areas of Naples are all colour coded.
This book them follows through in sections and chapters with surrounding areas, Phlegraean fields, Cumae, Portici and the Vesuvian Villas, Mount Vesuvius, Herculaneum, Pompeii, The Sorrento Peninsula, The Amalfi Coast, Along the Sorrento Coast, Paestum, Caserta, Capri, Ischia and Procida. Information on these places are about a page to two pages each, I found it was enough to get by on as when I was travelling around the biggest source for me is word of mouth, speaking to the locals or fellow holiday makers. Road maps, motorways the famous coastline is all shown. For the drivers section Naples can be tricky watch those trams, red traffic lights are more of a suggestion than a stop sign, traffic in Naples can be grid locked, down the coast while looking at the amazing scenery don't forget to keep one eye on the road. Drivers buckle up and good luck.
At the back of the book there are many tips on being safe, Chemists/Pharmacy are all marked and listed, an importance in any city. Information on hotels, restaurants, cafe, bars and festivals, Bank Holidays. More important for me, ladies shopping, even what time of year the sales start and when the markets are on. Men be vigilant keep those wallets in a safe place. It also has an Italian phase page, please try to give the language a go, it's courteous and appreciated, the Italians have a sense of humour and even if you say it incorrectly remember.............. it whether their laughing with us or at us that count.
MY TIPS:
Read the book in advance before travelling; use the internet as another source of information. For example, I needed to find out about the hydrofoil timetables and price list, also if they were running from Naples to Amalfi Coast in September. The guidebook had already told me about the metro del mare hydrofoil service, so I typed in metro del mare as a key word via internet, the information is at your fingertips. Timetables, Routes and Prices can also be obtained from key words in this book for Ferries crossing, Trains, Public bus, best places to obtain your tickets from, also try the Summer in Italy web site just by typing in Summer in Italy, Hotels try Trip Advisor lots of information is given. Guidebooks in general do not list times and prices because they frequently change; also another unpredictability would be the weather, take everything into account how you travel about.
This book I found to be a wonderful source of information, many holiday makers were browsing through it while I was there, fascinated by it even. The history element was my keen interest, also the fact with all the information I'd obtained from this book plus the internet, I simply got off my flight in Naples and set out, so this book comes highly recommended from me, take this guide with you, good luck, stay sharp in the city have a fantastic time.

An Essential Travel Book.......2005-03-11
This book on Naples and the Amalfi Coast has been the best and most valuable guide book to the region. This Eyewitness guide, as is the case with the entire series, is very nicely laid out. The map of Naples under the front cover is color coded and provides highlights in each. The colors of the map relate to the sections in the book relating to the main areas of the city. The book nicely covers the history of Naples, art and architecture and culture, the environment and items of local interest.
Each section of the book that covers an area of Naples beings with a map numbered for the locations of items of interest. Each of the numbered locations is then described with a picture proving relevant information (sometimes in a colored box labeled "Visitor Checklist") such as opening times, how to get there and the main items to see. Important buildings, such as the Duomo, are illustrated with a colored cutaway drawing, showing a bit of the exterior and the interior plan, with the location of art work and places of special interest. Each page is full of information and often the photograph of the site brings something of interest to my attention that I may not pay any attention to in an un-illustrated book. The Amalfi Coast follows the chapters on Naples and is described in the same fashion. A map of the coast with number sights begins this section. Places, such as Pompeii and Herculaneum, are given a good overview with descriptions of the main sights and photographs. For surrounding areas like Capri and Ischia (covered on only 2 pages) there is not a lot of information which makes an additional book necessary. There is good information on how to get to destinations in the Naples area.
The descriptions are succinct and well-written, the aim being not to waste words or space. The Traveler Needs section provides good information on hotels, restaurants and shopping. Although I used additional guide books to discover information about hotels and restaurants I also referred to this book. The final section, Survival Guide, is a wealth of information about getting around Naples and the Amalfi coast. For example, this book is the only one I saw that had a map of the Metro stops in Naples, and you can tie this map to the detailed maps of the city to determine how the stops are connected. The several pages of maps are the best that I have seen in a guidebook: you can find any location on Naples using these maps. The maps are easy to access and follow from page to page and have detailed information like where pharmacies are located.
This guidebook is the kind that always finds a place in my luggage. It is easy to become familiar with an unfamiliar place and is a storehouse of practical information.

Take this with you!.......2007-10-04
This book is ideal in many ways. Read it before you travel - it reviews all of the highlights that you'll want to see while in Venice. It also explains and diagrams the public transportation system, a useful thing to know in advance of your arrival.
This book is a great size to take along while touring the Venice area. I referred to it often because navigating Venice can be a lot like trying to find your way around a labyrinth!
A nice feature of this book is that it cross-references topics in a variety of ways. If you want to see sights in a certain geographic area, you can look things up that way. However, if you have a special interest, like churches, art galleries, or whatever, the book is organized so that you can easily look up your specific interest and locate the sights you want to see throughout Venice. The book lists the entrance fees to the major attractions, as well as the days and times when they open and close.
Another nice feature of this book is the variety of historical information it contains on all manner of things Venetian - from gondolas to glass blowing. My husband and I used this book on our first trip to Venice and truly found it invaluable. I highly recommend it.
excellent book.......2007-08-07
the top 10 guides are the greatest books for traveling. they give the top 10 of everything you would like to know-sights, resturants, hotels. we traveled through europe and book several different types of books and the top 10 were our favorites!
Best Guide to Venice.......2007-07-17
My girlfriend, a world traveller for 20 years, borrowed this guide from a friend before going to Venice. It was so helpful and easy to carry around, and made her trip so full and enjoyable, that she bought her own copy and plans to rely on this series of travel guides in the future.
Great to carry on the go.......2007-05-01
My wife and I love the Top 10 series. We always buy a Frommers or Rick Steves book for the trip's planning, but the Top 10 is a must for the trip itself. It'll fit in a pocket (a long one), and will provide quick and easy references to the most important sights, as well as maps and public transportation routes.
Revisiting Venice Made Easy.......2007-03-19
This will be my third visit to Venice and this book has given me so many places to visit that I was not even aware of. It also gives me plenty of restaurants in areas other than San Marco which is also very helpful. Best guide to Venice I have even seen.

My Pocket's Not That Small.......2007-09-28
I love DK guides. I use them faithfully for my travels in Europe. The pocket map and guide are beautifully done, except, my pocket's not that small. If the guide were a bit larger I might be able to read it. Now I have to pack a magnifying glass too. Perhaps it's just me, but I think it could be a bit larger and still fit in my pocket. Especially since I could forget the magnifying glass. Then I have been known to stuff a digital camera in my pocket too. I have a suggestion. Find a pair of jeans. Measure the BACK pocket. Fit the guide to just slip into that pocket. Perfect.
