Useful Helsinki Guide.......2006-01-30
This travel guide has nice pictures of Helsinki and nice color maps. The pull out map is especially useful and colorful. The walking routes are nice and I also like the excursions section. After reading this book the full Finland Insight Guide is probably not worth the price unless you really are spending a long time in Finland.

Happy Days!.......2001-10-20
For part of our honeymoon, my wife and I decided to tour Norway and the rest of Scandinavia. For Norway, there was no better guide than this little book. It gave us all the info we needed - baring accommodation. But that can be seen to easily by popping into Norway's myriad tourist offices and booking ahead.
It's great for a number of reasons. One, it's very small and fits in your pocket - unlike most of the competition. Two, there is little so-called 'travel advice'. It focuses mainly on the best places to visit, what you can see when there and then ranks them in orders of fabulousness. The nice thing is that each chapter is a self-contained route that you can follow by car, by train or in Norway's case, by boat. Three, there are colour pictures of each destination along the route - to whet your apetite. Yes, there are one of two that look a bit dated, but most are nature pics and these won't change much in a 1000 years, never mind fifteen.
I really liked this book and found it extremely useful - along with its Finland counterpart. What better than a guide book that's ultra-light, clearly written and full of colour pictures. Top marks Insight.
Good, but too old pictures.......2001-01-03
I bought this book as a gift for my Host Family in Minnesota, USA , when I went there as a foreign exchange student. The book is good, and tells a lot about Norway, but for a book being marked as printed in 2000, the pictures are really old. I would say some of the pictures in this book looks like they are from the 80's. One example is the Royal Family, where the Crown Prince looks like he is around 11-12 years old. He is now in his 20's and engaged. But the nature still looks the same, so if you don't care too much about pictures, you can buy this book.
Excellent overview of Norway, people and places to visit!!!.......1998-09-02
I have just returned from my second trip to Norway. My husband and I travelled there last year for almost 3 weeks. I had purchased your book over 3 years ago, as I knew that we would be travelling there in the upcoming future. We have friends that live in Nesoddtangen, its mentioned in your book, they do not get many American visitors there its a very beautiful area to visit. Its a 20 minute ferry boat ride from the Aker Brugger. I just returned from a 2 week visit to Nesodden again. This time my friend and I travelled to Lardner, building the longest tunnel in the world, stayed two days, but on the trip over, visited the Stave Church, over 1000 years old. Left to Bergen on a 3 1/2 ferry boat ride on the Sonjefjord, the longest and deepest of the fjords. It was absolutely BEAUTIFUL. We then travelled by car to Bergen and stayed for 3 days, what a charming city. What I love about your books, I have Iceland also, is they are so informative and when I visit a town or area that I have read about, I feel so informed about geography, politics, weather, etc. Keep up the good work. I was in Iceland three days before travelling to Norway, and your books are right on the mark. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!! LOVE YOUR BOOKS!!!

Beautiful and clever guide to a beautiful country.......2002-03-18
All too often, Finland has been unfairly treated by many snobbish travel writers - too clean, too expensive, too Northern. For many of those identifying Finland only with mobile phones, the history, the architecture and the landscapes of this brave, spectacularly handsome and exceedingly talented country is largely unknown. This guide tells the story and shows the pictures in a friendly, seemingly effortless and hugely informative way.
The book - in common with other Insight Guide publications - is as beautiful as the cover picture suggests. They do not cut corners on buying top quality photos or commissioning informed articles, and it shows. The writing does not have the cynicism and grumpy attitude of shoestring-travel guidebooks: instead, it offers warmth and genuine attempt to look into the country and its people (not only to list its cheapest accommodation).
Insight Guides is quite laconic about basic survival within the country, but the pages that are there fully fit the task suffice. Moreover, in Finland, where the knowledge of English is practically universal and the system of public information about transport and other facilities is second to none, you do not need too much hand-holding anyway.
This beautiful and informative book is worth every penny.

I lived in Helsinki for 4 months and traveled around a bit (to Kuopio, Karigasniemi and Ivalo, as well as eastward to St. Petersburg). This is the best guide to Finland I've seen in English. They give not only important tourist information (maps, restaurant and hotel recommendations, attractions, tips, etc.), but also great cultural and historical information that will help put all the tourist stuff in perspective for you.
Finland can seem surprisingly foreign if you're expecting it to be just like Scandinavia or the rest of western Europe. But with a little help from the Insight guide you'll find it unique and exciting and beautiful rather than frighteningly different. Get ready for all the stereotypical pleasures (like the sauna and amazing architecture) and some less stereotypical ones like cutting edge, world class design, beautiful birch forests, spectacular lakes, and really weird yogurt-like stuff and juustoleipä!
Finland, here you come!

Great for Insight, OK for Travel.......2007-03-20
This book is something you'd want to read before going to Sweden, rather than lugging it along with you. However, it did have the best map of Stockholm in it of all of our travel books. You can usually pick up a decent map for free, though, when you get there in the back of the booklet that comes with a Stockholm Card.
The information in the book is great for getting more familiar with Sweden and Swedes, but not being a native-born Swede, I can vouch for its accuracy. It seemed pretty good to me, though.

This book is great for a good overview of the entire country--the history, the people, the food, the main attractions. It explains about the different parts of the country. Some of the pictures are just sterotypical Sweden--Sweden is much more diverse then people realize. They have immigrants from many countries. Scandinavia is a beautiful place. The museum details are not up to date, but this is hard because they change often and can be closed for various reasons. Be sure to do research before you go there if you have specific places you want to see. Otherwise just head over and wander the streets and you will find great stuff. This is more of a book to read before you go rather then to carry around with you while you are there. The Iceland Insight Guide is great. As a side note: I lived in Stockholm, Sweden for one year working. I visited all of the Scandinavian countries and Finland while I was there.

Being Swedish, it is always fun to read how other see Sweden and Swedes'. It is a great book that is more in depth on real life and how people are. You will feel that you know the people more after you have read the book. This whole series of Insight guide are great books for anyone travelling for real or if you want to travel by reading a book. You will not be disappointed with this book.

Not a carry along book.......2003-03-26
Best for background research before you go, the Insight guides are strong on giving a feel for the culture and people. For me, the short chapters on hunting, fishing and golf were not as interesting as the very good essays about how the Scottish church moulded the temperment of the people, and the bit about Scottish painters. A variety of topics like these are covered in the first 150 pages, the next 160 or so goes into the various locations, with a sense of the area combined with acutal landmarks, their description, location, hours of operation. The books are jammed full of photographs of decent quality. A different approach than the Eyewitness guides, worth looking at both before you go.

Lots of lovely memories.......2001-10-28
Insight Compact Guides are great. This one has 12 routes for you to follow as you travel through this stunningly beautiful country. All the major sights are featured with pictures and a rating. I like this feature since - as you will find - the authors are pretty good judges of what is worth seeing and what is not. It's also nice to see the Aland Islands included as one of the trips. My wife and I had a tremendous time cycling around them in the early autumn of 1999 - when the sea and sky were deep blue and the myriad forests a swathe of gold and red.
There are two big selling points for these guide books. One they are very small, light and easy to follow. Two, into a mere 100 odd pages, the authors have crammed a wealth of info/pictures on the country, its history, culture, customs - as well as 12 unforgettable journey's.
Five stars and lots of lovely memories.

The Insight Guide series is, in general, a really good introduction to any of the countries that they have chosen to focus on. This one on Finland, like all of them, is full of great photo's and good historical, economic, social, and political descriptions.
The tourist descriptions of what to see, places to stay and eat, etc. always seem to be pretty good and accurate.

This book is a great combination of a tourist guide and cultural description of Finland, a country between the east and the west.
There are plenty of great color pictures included which makes this book lovely reading before and especially after your trip to Finland. Even though you would never travel to Finland this book will reveal much more than a weekend trip would do.
The best part of this book apart from the great pictures is that is does not only describe the popular sights to visit but it goes deep into the Finnish society and culture without being too heavy reading.
I warmly recommend this book to everyone who is interested in Finland.

These guides are great. If you're in the market for travel guides then make a visit to your local book store and check the various offerings to find one that matches the criterea you're looking for, it's worth the time as each publisher has a slightly different approach to how they create their guide books. The Lonely Planet guides are quality as well, and their website has lots of good information.
