We are preparing to visit South America, so this book is very apt. The author put together a new kind of travel story, weaving imagination with reality. It seems to us that a lot of South American native literature does the same thing. A fascinating insight into life in Patagonia, whether you read it as travel stories or fiction.

A Travel Story to Make You Want To Pack Your Bags.......2007-08-27

I had never heard of Bruce Chatwin before, but whilst shopping at a used book store, as I held IN PATAGONIA in my hand, my friend said: "Oh, Bruce Chatwin--he's a great writer."

From the moment I picked this book up, I couldn't stop reading it. The short segments worked well for me, I liked the style. I learned so much about the country, its history, and all sorts of interesting characters. This book is a great read, and I went on to read his others.

Expected More Depth of Vision.......2007-07-26

This is a book on a potentially engaging topic that came to me with high critical recommendation, but frankly didn't deliver. Chatwin's narrative is sentimental and seems in many cases superficial. His observations of the Welsh sheep ranchers seemed focused on insignificant details to the point that one may wonder if Chatwin had ever been diagnosed with autism. I couldn't finish the book.

I liked the fact that the author traversed the country on foot or by hitchhiking, getting a very close feel for the country. He interviews or quotes older experienced people who give a real feel for their area.

Published back in 1978, Bruce Chatwin's seamless mix of fact and fiction is still among the most enthralling of travel books. Prompted by a piece of reddish animal skin he found in his grandmother's curio cabinet when he was a child, the author ignites himself on a flight of fancy about its origin. This leads him to an expansive area of wild beauty, Patagonia on South America's southernmost tip. I have been lucky enough to visit this part of the world myself about four years ago, and I can confirm from my travels that Chatwin does an amazing job of capturing not only its physical splendor but its colorful inhabitants. However, this is no linear travel narrative, as the author breaks his stories down into mini-sections, ninety-seven in total.

Several of the episodes deal with his own experiences on the road and the individuals he encounters like the gauchos on the pampas, the Welsh-originated villagers, a French soprano, and a hippie from Haight-Ashbury looking for work in the mines. Interspersed with these accounts are snippets of history, real or imagined, such as an unknown connection between Magellan's expedition and Shakespeare's "The Tempest", the whereabouts of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid after they left the states, and a 19th-century European lawyer who convinced the local Araucanian Indians to elect him their monarch. Chatwin shows particular gift for culling whimsical trivia into a greater storytelling context that is hard to resist as long as the reader is aware that little of it is verifiable. He inevitably ends the book the way he started - by finding the source of the animal scrap. Few writers have shown such a vivid imagination and a powerful sense of imagery as Chatwin has with his splendid travelogue. This will make those with an extreme case of wanderlust want to book their flights to Punta Arenas, Chile, right away.

This book, and it's companion Fly Fishing Patagonia:the South, is an excellent coffee table books for gringos heading south or who've gone south. If you want a meaty flyfishing guide head elsewhere. 5 stars for a coffee table book, 2 for a guidebook.

Awesome!.......2003-03-22

I recently returned from Argentina where I purchased this book before it was available here in the US. I own dozens of fly fishing books but there is none that compares to the outstanding photography in this book. It is a book every fly fisherman should own, whether or not they have ever fished Argentina. The book covers every important river in the Lake District and the bilingual text makes for excellent reading. I am purchasing copies for friends.

The South American Table contains authentic flavorful recipes from South America.

Maria Baez Kijac is a food writer, cooking instructor and culinary historian. She was born and raised in Quito, Ecuador and spent 15 years researching this book.

Coming from a native of South American and currently living in the United States, Baez Kijac knows what we are missing in our lives - genuine South American foods! Having lived in South America myself, I see that South American food is gaining in popularity but is still under-recognized. This cookbook helps people enjoy a variety of dishes without focusing too greatly on one area of the continent.

Her recipes are easy-to-follow and extremely flavorful! I was happy to see some of my favorites in here too!

If you enjoyed "The Book of Latin American Cooking" by Elisabeth Lambert Ortiz, then you will love "The South American Table" by Maria Baez Kijac!

I couldn't put it down!.......2005-08-12

I just bought this book today and have yet to cook from it (hence holding off on the 5th star) but this is what I was looking for in a South American cookbook. While others may give a brief intro about a dish, Ms. Kijac gives several pages of history and background that really helps one understand this cuisine. The book is so well-researched that one can see it was truly a labor of love. The food glossary is a big bonus! My only criticism is that each recipe is not associated with its country of origin.

I recently took this book out on loan from my local libary, but love it so much, I'm going to buy a copy for myself. I am half-Colombian and grew up in New York where South American cuisine, particularly Colombian, was plentiful (from homecooked, family meals to countless restaurants in Queens). I've been living in California for ten years and often long for an authentic sancocho, platanos, arepas, empanadas, aji piques, etc, but have never had any luck. Now, with these recipes and the wonderfully informative glossary of South American ingredients - and where to get them - I can make the meals I love so much myself and discover so many others. I especially enjoyed the brief history of the South American cuisine.

Beautiful photographs of a far away place.......2006-07-25

I bought this book because we are planning a trip to Patagonia. This book with its magnificent photographs has been a huge help in planning the trip. Not because it gives any travel tips, but the photographs speak for themselves. This is not a travel advice book. There is no information regarding where to stay or eat. However, the photographs tell me what not-to-miss sites to include in my tour. The photographs are so gorgeous that I cannot hardly wait to get there. This book plus a good South American travel agent have allowed me to establish a travel plan to the most scenic locations. The photographer must have spent a long time traveling the area. His views of glaciers, lakes, dramatic clouds and wildlife show his talent. Many outstanding panoramas are included. These must have been taken with a high quality panorama camera. This is a very nice photo book, to be looked at over and over again.

I recommend this book highly. Tim Hauf?s remarkable photography captures the many regions of Patagonia - the diversity of landscapes, the various moods and raw beauty, a stark grandeur. The uncivilized immensity of mountains and water, sometimes filled with icebergs other times with whitecaps, some misty above the power of falls, leaves the viewer in awe. We are surprised and delighted by the variety of images, from the smallest of flowering bushes to the romping of guanacos, but overall we are speechless before the vastness of empty space. Fortunately, Conger Beasley?s text brings the photography into a semblance of understandable. By introducing us to the history of the region alongside tales of the personal journey that he shared with Hauf, Beasley brings the reader into the wild and foreign land as a fellow traveller. We are less intimidated by the endless wild.

This is an exceptional study of the Patagonian gauchos and their life style and habitat before it is extinguished forever by western values, money and culture. As a tourist in Patagonia it should be required reading, especially if you are attempting a riding trip there as we were, across the Andes. For a moment you can understand what you are seeing and experiencing, for a second you are part of the scenary, not just watching it voyeuristically unfold before you. I don't think I understood travel until I read this book.I will never travel again with my eyes open and my mind closed.

A Fascinating Person and a Fascinating Story.......2003-05-24

I had the pleasure of meeting Nick Reding earlier this year, and as I chatted with him over some drinks, I was really struck by the thought, "This guy has led a really amazing life!" As a result, I went out and grabbed this book and as I read it, I became even more amazed.

Nick tells the story of his experiences in the Chilean Patagonia in a way that draw you in to every moment. The vividness of his writing and the beauty of some of his comparisons made this quite an enjoyable read. His attention to detail leaves the reader with a feeling that they are right there staring over Nick's shoulder as he goes about life in a very different part of the world.

Nick has that knack that some of the best writers have of being able to see the common thread that exists between very different experiences and places. This book is also extremely well researched with a lot of attention to historical detail, but this detail is not integrated in a dry textbook like manner. Instead when Nick feels it is neccessary to illuminate the reader about a particular piece of history to provide context for an event, he explains that history without distracting from the main storyline.

Overall, this is an excellent piece of writing and I look forward to future books by Nick (he assures me at least one more is on the way).

Gauchos are not chilean.......2003-01-13

This is just to correct a gross mistake from one of the other reviewers. Gauchos are the archetypical argentine country men, not chilean. and Patagonia is argentinean in more than 90% of its extension.
Gaucho literature is almost exclusively argentinian. An obligatory introduction to the world of gauchos is José Hernández' Martin Fierro. See this book first to get a glance at the gaucho's rough life before embarking in a second-hand misleading historiography.

A Great Read!!!.......2002-06-16

If you have been to Cisnes,Patagonia (or want to go there) this is a must book to read. I spent 10 days in this area in February, 2002 and saw some of the people that Nick writes about. In reading the book Nick made me feel that I was back there as I could visualize where the events were taking place. The changes to Coyhaique have continued since 1999 as I found it to be a very modern town. After reading this book I would like to make a return trip.

I can't say that I've read the whole book but it looked pretty awesome. One warning, I didn't read the review carefully enough and I bought it thinking all of the field notes were actually from the place Patagonia. This is not the case. The writings are from the Patagonia magazine and include all areas of the world. Pretty cool if that is what you are looking for. THIS BOOK IS NOT SOLELY ABOUT PATAGONIA!

I have just returned from traveling five weeks through Patagonia and found myself using "Time Out" regularly for its engaging history, cultural and overall coverage.

I started out in the Argentinean Lake District (Bariloche) and wove my way down to Tierra del Fuego (Ushuaia), crossing various times between Argentina and Chile. "Time Out" was my companion guide to both "Footprint" and "Rough Guides".

No other guide gives you as much information regarding outdoor activies: Hiking, Golfing, Fishing, Hunting, Skiing; even Scuba Diving (you can dive the icy waters of Ushuaia!). The writing is engaging and erudite. For those that love nature no other guide gives you as much as this guide.

HOWEVER, "Time Out Patagonia" should not be considered as your primary travel guide. It is more of a companion guide. It offers only a handful of restaurant and hotel recommendations, and often these recommendations are the most expensive. The small maps in this book are pathetic, and will help you locate nothing of significance.

"Time Out Patagonia" fills in the gaps that the other guides have. This is the guide you will read after the other guides have helped you with your accommodations and eateries (consider: Footprint Argentina 2006 - highly recommended - see my review). Strongly Recommended.

A must for Patagonia.......2007-01-16

Excellent guide for someone taking a trip to Patagonia. Precise in the level of information provided. It was used extensively during the 8 thousand mile trip by car. It helped in taking many decisions on sights and where to drive to and what to see.

This book has an amazing amount of information on Patagonia in general, and specifically Valdes Peninsula where I will be visiting. I was going to spend a lot of money with tour packages, uncertain accommodations, and a guy waiting at the airport holding up my name on a poster board...but now I can arrange it myself with this book and a taxi.
