Book Description
The best and bestselling book of its kind. Originally published in 1995, How to Care for Aging Parents, with 220,000 copies in print, won a Books for a Better Life Award and was praised as "an indispensable book" (AARP) and "a compassionate guide of encyclopedic proportion" (The Washington Post). It also catapulted its author, Virginia Morris, to national prominence as a recognized eldercare authority on Oprah, Good Morning America, CNN, CBS, and other media.
Nine years later, and the need for the book is mushrooming: the number of adult children caring for a parent has increased from 4 million to 19.5 million, with roughly 80% of the nation's elderly cared for at home. Virginia Morris responds with a completely revised, up-to-date new edition. Expanded from 450 to over 650 pages, it covers all the emotional, legal, financial, medical, and logistical issues in caring for the elderly. There are new sections on expanded housing options, alternative therapies, balancing career and caregiving, and dealing with difficult parents. It covers the biggest change in caregiving--the newfound independence of seniors and benefits of healthy aging--and the reverse: three chapters are dedicated to caring for parents with Alzheimers. At the end of the book is an invaluable 100-page "Yellow Pages" guide to all the resources and services of the enormous eldercare industry.
Customer Reviews:
Great resource for Caregivers.......2007-09-10
We have given this book to several of our clients, many of whom are long distance caregivers. They've all called to say "thank you". The book is detailed, and provides a step by step guide for caregivers. Extremely helpful for those new to caregiving.
Valerie.......2006-08-30
An excellent resource. Each of the siblings now has a copy and TOGETHER we're dealing with the challenges aging brings.
Excellent guide to tough questions.......2006-06-10
Virginia Morris' book "How to Care For Aging Parents" is the essential reference book for anyone who is or will be caring for the elderly. It is clearly written, carefully researched and thoroughly indexed to provide quick access to all questions. As a psychotherapist I keep this book close at hand to help unsnarl any issues with or about the aging population.
If you think this book might help you, it will........2006-06-08
I'm not one for self-help books, but when my father's Alzheimers began to consume him and jeopardize my mother's physical, mental, and financial condition, I turned to this book for help and found it more valuable than I ever could have imagined. It is filled with easy-to-follow advice and very practical steps that can be taken to address your situation. The author has done so much research and identified so many resources that reading the book saves untold time and agony. I only wish I had found it sooner.
Not a lot of useful information.......2006-01-01
This book is recommended on the Elderlawanswers site, which has a lot of good information, but I didn't find any information in the book that you can't get for free with an internet search or that isn't just common sense.

WHAT A WONDERFUL TOOL.......2002-10-02
This book is a wonderful tool for any trustee whether new or seasoned.!!!
It is splendidly laid out and easy to navigate.
Every possible problem has been addressed and solved for the family planning to start a new foundation.
Along with that, there is information that can vastly enhance those who are newly appointed to longstanding boards of old established family foundations.
I was very impressed with this book and plan to suggest our foundation buy copies for all board members, associates and staff members.
Best regards,

Written by Mike Livingston, its 432 pages provide useful information to help you decide where to move, to help you with your move, to help you settle into DC life, or just to give you the chance to get to know Washington DC better.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Book For Relocators That Even Non-Relocators Can Enjoy.......2007-03-11
THE NEWCOMER'S HANDBOOK FOR MOVING TO AND LIVING IN WASHINGTON DC is a great book for people relocating to the area, but even people who are not moving there can enjoy it. It talks about where the best neighborhoods and schools are in the District itself, as well as in Maryland and Virginia, mentions where the shopping malls and other stores are, and it even goes into detail about the town of Columbia, Maryland, which other books about the Baltimore-Washington DC area fail to do. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is proud to say "I'm an American."
Nothing worthwhile.......2006-08-18
This book is devoid of any of the information I really needed, like where to get my car inspetected (and the whole process of getting a DC driver license) or even where the good playgrounds are.
Relocating to DC?.......2006-05-18
If you are relocating to DC, don't do it until you've read (or at least skimmed) this book. I haven't even moved yet and it's been helpful. First it explains different neighborhoods and why you may or may not want to move to that location. It also gives you helpful hints and good questions to ask regarding a place to rent or buying a home. Included are the daily life information such as where to buy a couch, find a veternarian, or the location of the closest park. All in all the book covers many issues that I would not have thought about before moving to a new place.

Book Description
Now in its Fourth Edition, this popular quick-reference handbook remains a staple for medical students on psychiatric rotations, psychiatric residents, practitioners, and mental health professionals. In an easy-to-scan outline format, the book summarizes the etiology, epidemiology, clinical characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment of all psychiatric disorders. Coverage has been thoroughly updated with DSM-IV-TR diagnoses and new information on pharmacotherapy. This edition is replete with DSM-IV-TR and other tables and includes boxed, highlighted Clinical Hints. Each chapter ends with specific page and chapter references to Kaplan and Sadock's Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry, Eighth Edition. Color photographs of psychiatric drugs are also included.
Customer Reviews:
OK for boards review or medical students.......2002-03-29
I'm starting a psychiatry residency after being a general practice doc, and want to get up to speed before beginning. This book is in outline format and covers a LOT of material very briefly--which is fine. But it's full of typos, some of which change the meaning of sentences in important ways! And the numerous tables are done in a font so small that even with good eyes I have trouble reading them. To me this is a good book to review for the psych part of the boards, or for a medical student on psych rotation.
Compact and informative.......2001-08-03
The sectional layout of this edition follows that of the huge comprehensive textbook of psychiatry. However, information is relevant and pertinent to medical students and practicing residents. Although, a bit light on psychotherapeutic treatments it is good on topics of definitions, epidemilogy and psychotropics. Good tables and figures throughout.
Good in terms of what it is marketed as... a handbook. Go to the Synopsis or Comprehensive textbooks for fuller understanding.

Book Description
The Deposition Handbook is short, simple and informative, yet it thoroughly familiarizes the reader with the deposition procedure. It also brings to light tactics and strategies attorneys routinely use when doing their deposition examinations. Added to this Millennium Edition of the book are comments from judges about the quality of the deposition testimony of President Bill Clinton and Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates. The sample transcript it includes has also been expanded.
Customer Reviews:
The Deposition Handbook.......2006-09-21
This book is a joke! I read it to try to prepare for a malpractice deposition; after the deposition, I realized this book did not help me prepare in any way. Why doesn't the author get down to the nitty gritty? Plaintiff lawyers are manipulative and sleazy. The deposition process allows them to "broil" the defendant. The recorder did not interfere once (nor did my defense attorney) to control the vile antics of the plaintiff's attorney. My impression of the deposition process was that it was legalized witch-burning and I wasted my time reading this inane book. Don't buy it!
good primer.......2004-07-21
If you want a quick, easy-to-follow introduction to the deposition process, this book does a very good job of that. I've recommended it to many of my clients, and they all found it to be a great primer for helping them understand what happens at depositions. The book even offers some strategies for helping witnesses get through cross-examination. It's compact enough to read in a day, yet the information it contains is so on point that it completely demystifies the entire deposition procedure. Its numerous examples and sample transcript make it a good bet for anyone having to give a deposition.
Nat Colley, retired attorney
Get informed before your deposition........2001-12-07
This guide is a relatively small, spiral bound, 87 page pamphlet. It contains much useful information about what happens at a depostion, how to prepare yourself for a deposition, and answering the questions you will get at a deposition. It seems designed as an introductory guide for those who are either representing themselves or for those whose attorneys have not spent enough time explaining the process to them. This booklet should help calm your fears about the process. This guide is short enough that you can easily read it in an evening. It is written in plain English without the legal jargon. The author is a court reporter, not an attorney, but she clearly communicates a lot of basic information you need before going into a deposition.

Customer Reviews:
A great guidebook that quickly tells you all about Virginia!.......2004-01-08
This guidebook does a good job of presenting its information in a concise, meaningful way. You can easily flip through its well-marked sections and feel as if you are taking a trip all over Virginia! I like that each section (History, Shopping) starts with a quick intro, telling you the overall feel of that area. It's not afraid to tell you that one city is more known for its nightlife while another is known for its shopping malls. The beginning of the book includes an overall look at Virginian history, major cities, climate, major roadways and wildlife - great information for newcomers to have!
Virginia, Where Dreams Gave Birth To A Nation.......2002-02-08
As a native Virginian, I don't know why it took me so long to discover this book. It's a great reference to have for both residents and visitors. I spent the first two hours just looking up points of interest and trivia about the Old Dominion. Virginia has so many historical sites that touring the state is like taking a class on the formation of America. A tourist can visit Revolutionary War Sites, Civil War Battlefields, scenic old towns, and the beautifully restored great houses, like Mount Vernon in Alexandria , Monticello in Charlottesville, Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg and, of course, the James River Plantations. Williamsburg is a must see for everyone.
This book's Introduction gives a little background of Virginia and some general history. The handbook is then divided into the five regional areas of the state. They are the Northern, Central, Coastal Plain, Southwest and the Shenandoah Valley. Within these divisions information is given on the counties and major cities. In each place, the historic sites, annual events, shopping places, museums, hotel accommodations, recreation areas, dining and local transportation are all listed and given detailed descriptions.
I think that the best way to truly critique a guide book is to read about an area that you know pretty well and see how the authors handled that region. All of the major sites were mentioned in my area and the accommodations and things to do were all covered. I checked out the restaurants listed and there were eight mentioned. I would have left out two. One major restaurant was not included. Other than that minor point, the authors gave a pretty accurate description of my area. This book is very concise and I believe it to be a very helpful guide to traveling in the great state of Virginia..
Excellent.......2001-05-19
"Recommended for visitors who want to research a trip ahead of time and take the book along for repeated reference. Covers the parks, scenic highways and historic attractions of the state, including tips on everything from shopping and dining to hotels and entertainment. An excellent destination guide."
