I used this book while in Vietnam in August 2006. It was very helpful in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Cannot comment on it's usefulness in other cities.

3 out of 5 stars Better .......2007-05-07

I Got the Lonely Planet for Thailand also but this is the one I took with me need I say more. The only thing I could complain about is for it to me updated.

4 out of 5 stars Frommer's Thailand.......2006-08-15

Great and informative. Really could have reviewed a few more of the really exceptional top end restaurants in Thailand known mainly to the locals. More pictures of the area's you are visiting would be nice. My favorite hotel in the whole of Thailand would have to be Anantara Goldern Triangle - not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Unjustly Maligned.......2006-04-22

I like this guide for the very reason others seem to bash it: it's written for the non-backpacker who would rather avoid sleeping on a luggage rack or eating in a hole in the wall. Been there, done that. But now I'm older and and can afford to budget a luxury or two when I travel. There's plenty of information on the sights, streets, spectacles, etc., but as noted, the tips on accommodation focus on 3.5-star places and above.

1 out of 5 stars The author assumes too little of the traveler to Thailand.......2004-10-06

I bought the Frommers book mostly to meet the spending limit required to get free shipping for my online order .. and because it's smaller than the LP and bigger than Fodors (not bad), which I already have .. and I was curious. I've been to Thailand several times and speak decent Thai. This guide book is like your parents' or your grandparents' guidebook, though it tries in little ways to be different. It's characterization of travel in Thailand, and assumptions about your attitudes, says to me "you don't really want to see the real Thailand". They feel you'll be happiest at the newest, more expensive, cleanest, most Western hotels and restaurants and that you'll be more interested in the best-run, well-lit, safe and sanitary and `gee those curious Thai' types of attractions. They encourage you to be wary and worried (not always a bad idea, but hey, Thailand is a very safe place compared to the Americas!) and concerned about your hygiene (Thais, on average, are more concerned about hygiene than Westerners).

Some advice is good, and info. on the sex trade is straightforward enough, which is appreciated because you can make up your own mind. On other subjects I feel they're mostly wrong, for example the quality of faux designer goods. They make 'cute' jokes about fake Rolex watches and designer fashion goods lasting a week, but actually the quality can be very good. Having bought many such items as fun gifts over the last 10 years, I can report that all the fake Rolexes I've purchased still keep accurate time! In other areas I think they also give poor advice, for example, online booking of hotels using Thai websites. These are actually where you get the best deals, not available at the hotels no matter what your bargaining skills. They advise using `trusted' US sites like Travelocity, Expedia, & Hotwire. Sure, but only if you're looking to spend money on expensive international-style hotels in big cities. It seems they prey on our fears out of their own fear of lawsuits .. not sure.

Overall, there is some very good advice thrown in with questionable suggestions, but what kills me most is the attitude of the book - they can't really give it straight to you because they've got you pegged as a first-time traveler from the Midwest and they're 'looking out for you'.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Purchase This E-book for Pocket PC.......2004-08-12

Frommer's guides provide good information. With an eye toward an upcoming vacation in Thailand, I purchased this e-book ... and have been very disappointed that it is completely incompatible with any Pocket PC device.

- The Adobe Reader for Pocket PC WILL NOT display Adobe e-books.

- Amazon.com does not clarify this information adequately for its shoppers.

- In addition, Amazon.com won't refund e-book purchases!

The result: if you buy this e-book, and plan to read it on your Pocket PC, you'll have wasted your money.

4 out of 5 stars nice summary for major sites in Asia.......2006-07-03

- Bali, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos.. Get the highlights of frommers books in one edition. As all Frommers, great recommendations on itineraries (Best of lists) and opinionated. Not for backpackers who want to know more details (lonely planet is best for that) but great for those who want a range of options and strong guidance.

2 out of 5 stars Not very useful for Malaysia.......2004-02-11

I find it odd that this book had only 80 pages on Malaysia, compared to about 140 for Vietnam. Furthermore, what information it contains on Malaysia was sparse. Most of the accommodation mentioned was high-end. There wasn't even a map of Kuala Lumpur in it!

(I confess that I only spent a couple of ours with this book. After skimming through it, I took it back, and exchanged it for another that concentrates on Singapore and Malaysia. There is a Frommer's, but it was out of stock, so I picked up the Rough Guide, which is delightful so far.)

Book Description

Come along with Frommer's and discover two of Asia's most intriguing destinations. Our author has scoured every inch of this region, and she'll share her cultural insights and favorite discoveries with you. Her guide is much more complete and in-depth than its major competitor.

In Singapore, you'll find the best places to stay, from high-tech business hotels to affordable finds, plus an amazing array of dining choices. Follow our author's fantastic walking tours, which introduce you to hidden gems in each ethnic neighborhood you'll find Hindu and Buddhist temples and Islamic mosques mixed in with modern high-rises, colonial architecture, and even a real-live rain forest still growing at the edge of the urban area.

In Malaysia, we'll take you beyond bustling Kuala Lumpur to discover beach resorts; the colonial architecture and amazing dining scene in Penang; idyllic islands; traditional villages; and great opportunities to shop for Malaysian handcrafts. We'll even visit Borneo, where rivers meander through dense tropical rain forests, beaches stretch for miles, and caves snake on for miles. In the many national parks that protect this spectacular jungle, you'll meet tiny deer, tinier owls, monkeys, and the increasingly rare orangutan. Experience all the adventure with Frommer's in hand, knowing you can rely on us for accurate information, practical advice, and useful maps.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Mostly Useless.......2007-07-14

As most other reviewers have noted, this book's title is completely misleading. It is a mediocre travel guide to Singapore with a small subsection on Malaysia. To put this into perspective, Kuala Lumpur's metro area has a population of 6.9 million yet gets 15 pages of coverage in this book. Singapore, with a population of 4.5 million, gets 167 pages. Most of the Malaysian island sections only have hotel reviews which cover large all-encompassing resort hotels.

I got the feeling from reading this book that it is targeted to tourists whose primary priority is finding a large hotel room just like back home. No walks are included. Many unhelpful comments are included like "The [train] lines don't seem to connect in any logical way" (KL Rail) without suggesting solutions. We ended up barely touching the book and cribbing from another traveler's Lonely Planet guide, which was more helpful overall.

Luckily, we did have The Rough Guide to Singapore which was much more useful for the Singapore leg of our trip and had better maps and suggested agendas. Eating recommendations were hit or miss, of the places we tried in Singapore many were nothing special or seemed to be catering to timid palates.

2 out of 5 stars Mayalsia? Look Elsewhere!.......2006-01-13

Although the title of this book would make one think that both the CITY-STATE of Singapore & the COUNTRY of Malaysia would receive coverage equal to their size, think again. Two-thirds of the book is devoted to tiny Singapore and the rest to huge (in comparison) Malaysia. I guess it's not so surprising when you learn that the author lives in Singapore and is married to a Singaporian! Frommer should be ashamed of their title. It should more accurately be "Singapore with a Section on Malaysia"!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed in Scanty Info on Malaysia.......2004-04-05

I just purchased this book in anticipation of a trip to Malaysia....so my review is written without having yet been on the trip.

However, this book lacks some basic information on Malaysia that I expect in a travel guide in order to plan a trip, for example, more fleshed out information on safety, health, exercise (and more) that is usually found in Frommer's guides and is found in the section on Singapore.

The *ONE* map of Kuala Lumpur is inadequate to even find the things mentioned in the accompanying text.

And when trying to figure out what to do with a few extra days from Kuala Lumpur, there is no information on how to get to the sites suggested, nor how long it takes! No web sites or email addresses listed for the outfitters mentioned - perhaps they don't exist, but I doubt it.

There were other inadequacies I noted in the section on Malaysia as well, but these suffice as examples of why I find this book of poor quality compared to most Frommer's books.

For the first time ever, I have to say I am very disappointed in a Frommer's guide.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every dollar!.......2000-08-15

I just spent a month on business in Singapore and couldn't have made it without this book. Everything was right on, from restaurant reviews to prices for hotels. Jennifer has a great sense of humor and is right on with her recommendations and insights. I travel a lot and will buy Frommers from now on.

3 out of 5 stars This book has too much info on Singapore and none on Borneo.......1999-07-08

Frommer's info is well-written and clear but 228 out of 299 pages deal only with Singapore and this book has no information at all about Sarawak and Sabah, the best places in Malaysia in my opinion. The info on Taman Negara Park and it's activities, such as rafting were scanty and there was no info on the islands of the eastern peninsula.

    4 out of 5 stars A handy all-around guide.......2000-05-10

A handy guide if you're interested in travel around the Southeast Asia region, particularly if you're undecided about your destination. Travel destinations are broken down by country and city, as well as "best-of" categories (eg., best resorts, best festivals, best markets). Beautiful color photographs in the front and back of the book. The hotel and restaurant guides are the excellent; they are categorized by budget and the recommended places are highlighted, with comprehensive descriptions.

As with any guidebook, be aware that some of the information may be incorrect or outdated. Took the book with me to Vietnam and found that some of the locations mentioned were closed (even though the book was published this year) and addresses incorrect. Also, a reference guide for health problems (including symptoms & possible illnesses) would have been helpful, in case you get sick. The Lonely Planet does a much better job in this category.

Would still recommend this book, particularly if you plan to travel to more than one country in SE Asia, and want to explore the best of the region.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2004-03-13

I have read other books from Frommer and have been very satisfied. That is, until I read this book. I was quite disappointed in this book. The author didn't seem like she enjoyed writing this book or even enjoyed traveling through Thailand at all. I would look else where before buying this book.

    1 out of 5 stars Most disappointing Frommer's guide.......2003-12-10

Am usually a huge fan of Frommer's guidebooks. But am disappointed to say that this book was not helpful in ANY way ! There is nothing useful here - from overall insight, to presenting specific materials in a usable, organized format.. NOTHING ! Even the shops she recommended would've been difficult to find without a good map in the book. Most bothersome of all, it seems like the author doesn't even like Thailand very much and it is reflected in her review of attractions, various warnings, etc. Thailand is a beautiful, interesting country with much to offer for any type of traveler. We went to Bangkok and the Southern coast and did not use the book at all- for planning or during the trip.

Considering that there is no content, this book was very heavy to travel with ! ...

5 out of 5 stars Who needs a ROUGH GUIDE?.......2002-07-22

When I went to Thailand last year, I ended up planning most of my trip according to this book. The author never steered me wrong. While this might not be the best source for the backpacker set, the rest of us are well served with a variety of options for most travel budgets. I also liked the author's sense of humor and frank honesty. She has lived in the region and knows what she is talking about. The Thais I encountered during my trip also thought highly of the book. When I return to Thailand in 2003, this updated version of the book will be right there with me. I know it is an "establishment" guide but this is one time when mainstream is not necessarily a bad thing.

3 out of 5 stars Budget travelers don't look here........2002-01-04

For the most part I find Frommer's travel books to be very good. This one for Thailand was decent. It gave good descriptions of places including how to get there, phone numbers, prices, ect. But this book was definately not meant for the budget traveler/ backpacker. If it offered more information geared to the budget traveler; ie: lower priced places to stay, dining, places to go to (especially the non-resorty places), I would give it 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Frommer's does Thailand the Right Way.......2000-04-18

I am a strong believer in Arthur Frommer and his guides of top tourist destinations. The guide to Thailand 2000 is just another example of Frommers' dedication to American tourists. From inexpensive hotels in Bangkok to prehistoric tribes, Frommer's has created a masterpiece. Oh, and if you have the time, don't forget to visit the beaches in the south!

5 out of 5 stars Frommers' Nepal 1999.......2000-01-03

This was the first book I bought to get ready for my trip to Nepal. I have not gone on that trip yet, but after reading this book I felt ready to tackle any travel encounters that may come my way. This book has extensive travel information to Nepal, dozens of phone numbers and up-to-date internet URL's related to Nepal and travel needs, as well as good information about hotels, restaurants, sights, you name it. This is a fantastic book to start out with if you are planning on visiting Nepal, and the price here is much less than what I paid for it at B&N. Happy traveling!
