1 out of 5 stars shoddy book, full of outdated information.......2007-02-19

The date on the latest edition says 2007, but this book is completely out of date.

I took a quick look at the Madrid chapter and immediately found the following:

(a) The subway map is old (p. 98); line 8 from the airport started running to Nuevos Ministerios a long time ago but this is not shown.

(b) On pg. 94 it is claimed that there are airport buses to Plaza de Colon. They used to go there, but since Feb. 2005 (two Frommer editions ago!) they terminate at Avenida de America.

(c) On pg. 41 there is the wacky claim "There is a very favorable exchange rate in Spain when you pay in US dollars". The exchange rate for euros isn't any different in Spain than anywhere else, and it isn't "favorable" at all. When do you think this sentence was written?

(d) There's an article about internet access away from home. That's useful and modern, right? Well, it recommends hotspots operated by T-Mobile "at more than 1000 Starbucks coffee shops nationwide". The 'nation' they're talking about is the USA!

As I said, I got this during a quick browse; this is not a complete list of the weirdness in this shoddy little book.

2 out of 5 stars Just.... Blah.......2007-02-10

I've been to Spain several times, and until now I've been using the Lonely Planet 2003 Spain guide. On my upcoming trip there in May I thought I might update and perhaps complement my old guide by getting a 2007 edition
from another publisher. So, I picked up the Frommer's 2007 and started reading it in depth when I got home. Well, it's just not that good. The layout is very annoying and they barely list any hotels that aren't expensive. Also, they leave alot of tidbits out that the lonely planet has. (Like the chapter on Toledo for example, says nothing about the mass migration of the population to high rises around the city. Lonely Planet mentions things of this nature. Many of the Lonely Planet chapters usually make mention of a negative aspect of a certain area, which every good book should have.)

Not to mention the maps in the frommer's are basically nonexistent. Nothing more than a faraway street map with only the main roads filled in. The map of sevilla for example, only lists a couple major arteries and the names of plazas. For a city as confusing as sevilla, this isn't a big help. Good thing I already know my way around. To conclude, I'd say that Frommer's is just missing that one essential aspect: Soul. The book has no soul. No opinions, no diversity, no explanations of seedy happenings or places to stay away of because of certain things. Just no soul or passion and terrrrrrrrrible maps.

3 out of 5 stars Buy the 2005 version and save some money.......2006-03-23

I just got back from Spain a few days ago, having used the 2006 Frommer's Spain to plan our trip. None of the entries have been updated to reflect 2006 pricing for entry fees to museums, etc. The book has a small section in the front called "What's new in Spain" or something along those lines, but the rest of the book does not appear to have been updated for 2006. We ended up spending more than we had expected at almost every single place we visited on Frommer's advice due to the fact that the pricing was outdated. In hindsight, I would have saved some money and bought a used 2005 version. And FYI, most attractions have student discounts which knock up to half of the admission price off, so don't leave your student ID at home if you have one!

5 out of 5 stars Thorough, Comprehensive and well-put together - excellent guide for Spain.......2006-01-10

Thorough, Comprehensive and well-put together.

From all the travel books out there on Spain this one is not a compilation of mere facts, photos, phone numbers and page-fillers.

What sets Frommer's apart is the information provided and the style in which is presented. You will find lodging options for various budgets, a list of most important sites to see and even suggested ways to spend time in a city if you have only 1 day or as much as 5 days, great places to eat and great places to splurge if you can stretch your dollar. Be aware that this is not a book for the ones on a shoestring budget. Frommer provides a good introduction to Spain without being overloading you with mass amounts of information or pictures, a truly well-balanced book.

When I backpacked 4 months through Europe I had a copy of the Lonely Planet for Europe (a thick and heavy book) because it covered more cities and esoteric towns, a ripped chapters of all the international youth hostals Europe of the countries I visited, and as primary guide for nominal cities and capitals I used Frommers (ripped the book and kept only chapters of countries planning to visit - so I can keep the weight down).

1 out of 5 stars The New 2006 Frommers Review.......2005-12-19

Note: This is for anyone contemplating purchasing the new 2006 travel guide of Spain by Frommers. Don't waste your money. Although I have purchased over 30 Frommers books in the past and enjoyed each one, the Spain book was awful. In Madrid, the book lists 20 or so "Top Attractions" (which is customary for Frommers). However, try to read about these attractions (e.g. what they are, hours of operation, etc.) and you can only find about half of them in the book. How do you know if it is worth treking across town for something that has no description?

In addition, some attractions in Barcelona are not correct on the map (literally they are across town from where Frommers puts them). I ended up stopping in bookstores and reading Eye Witness in order to see what I was missing.

Save your money. I am also sending a complaint directly to Frommers as well. For the rest of the reviews (prior to mine) on this page, note that they are for other Frommers Spain versions (not the 2006 book).

1 out of 5 stars A Disaster.......2007-06-14

I heard a lot about how good are frommer's guides, and I had my experience using other companies guides for different countries, but I did not find a guide that is worst than this one.
I came from Portugal a week ago, I spent nearly a week in Lisbon and I could write a much more useful guide than this easily.
It all started upon arrival, the guide gave us wrong information on transportation from the airport to the City Centre including wrong prices and the travel info kiosk saved us.When it comes to restaurants and Cafes it suggested the worst with one or two exceptions. It gave us wrong closing time for a restaurant and when we arrived there paying the taxi driver 10 Euros, we discoverd that the restaurant closed already. The maps of Lisbon had wrong srreet names that are different than the names on the signs and on the map that we bought from there. In conclusion if you want to screw some one send him to Portugal with a Frommer's Portugal guide.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Portugal book.......2007-03-22

I went on a trip with a bunch of friends and between all of us we had every travel book on portugal that's been published so I had the chance to compare Frommer's to the other guides.

Pros: Great restuarant/bar and hotel tips. All the restaurant tips were spot on. We used this guide almost every night to find places to eat and go out. Very informative about the historical/architectural significance of the sites.

Cons: Poor maps - not much detail and street names and sites are not labeled. The book could also use a bit more description on how to get places. We took a side trip to Sintra and the Let's Go guide was much more useful for getting to and from the sites.

Overall the book caters to a wealthier traveler than some of the other guides. Restaraurants that were listed as "moderate" in Frommers were listed as "Expensive" in some of the other guides. However, Frommers was very accurate when giving price ranges for the restaurants.

4 out of 5 stars on the mark.......1999-10-14

I went to Portugal November of '98' and had purchased several books before my trip. I found this book very acurate and helpful. I was nervous because this book had no pictures or photos, I had to just trust it. It was right on the mark. The best place we stayed was in Sintra in a bueatiful bed and breakfast among Sequia Trees, and was average in price.

I went to Madrid by myself last year and relied on this book for most things. I had a great time!!!! The maps and walking tours gave me a good sense of the city to then go back and explore on my own and the night spots that I chose from the book were a lot of fun and I met very nice people.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to seeing Spain with a car or a moped.......2006-02-10

Bonita Espana from behind the wheel. This is for the 5th edition, 2004 printing.

Excellent guide to seeing Spain with a car or a moped. You will enjoy some great driving tours and routes through Espana.

Frommers has recently come out with more "Best-Loved Driving Tours" series ... guides that are not very inexpensive, but are very well researched and quite comprehensive. One will have plenty of driving tours and routes to chose from, whether you like arts and museums, scenic roads and breathtaking views, urban towns and shopping, or just want to experience a regione's culture and life.

Unlike the other Frommer guides that are fatter and heavier, this little book gives you not too many specifics on lodging or eating. It is geared strictly for the person behind the wheel and her or his passengers.

I have had a great experience using this guide and will recommend it to anyone who can afford it. Also, you might want to check to see if your library carries it and check it out for the duration of your visit abroad.

3 out of 5 stars Weaker than your typical Frommer's guide.......2005-10-12

I am a lover of Frommer's guides. In the past I've owned guides for Florida, Arizona, The Carolinas and Spain. So I assumed that this would be a good one. I was partly wrong. It has some beautiful pictures, for sure. But if what you are after is a guide to point you to the off-the-beaten-path places, if you want to drive away from the routes of the tour buses, this is not the right book for you. The tours it recommends are not too different from regular sightseeing experiences, so what's the point of driving the same routes that you can have someone drive for you?

If you are the adventurer type, you're much better off getting a copy of the Frommer's Spain book or the Michelin Guide. They will provide you with a wealth of details and tips that will enrich your travel plans.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Tons of info but frustrating to use.......2007-08-27

I have purchased a number of Frommer's books over the years and overall I have found them to be among the most helpful guides that exist. This Barcelona edition has been frustrating for me to use for my upcoming trip to Barcelona.

The advantage that this and all Frommer's guides will give you is a star rating for various sights, hotels, restaurants, etc:

3 stars = must see
2 stars = very highly recommended
1 star = highly recommended
reviewed but no stars = recommended

This feature is why I continually use Frommer's guides, they help me find the "priority" spots so that I can most efficiently use my vacation time. The Barcelona edition is no different, they have helped me identify the must-do activities on my upcoming trip.

The downside of the Frommer's Barcelona guide is 2 fold:

1) There are no pictures with in the book - a picture on the front cover and on the back cover, that is it. Most Frommer's guides have a few pages within them with a few photos. I don't buy Frommer's guides for the photos, that is not the kind of guide they make. But a few photos would have made the book better. There is however a color page included in the middle of the book, an advertisement for Travelocity.

2) The bigger issue I have with this edition is the lack of useful maps. There is not a single map that shows the entire Barcelona region. There is a map of the Barcelona attractions (which is helpful), but it does not include a number of things mentioned in the guide and does not include the Barcelona airport. In addition they have separate maps of the same area over and over again, one for sights, one for hotels, one for restaurants, one for the metro system. It would be very helpful to have a map that has the metro system locations included in the "What to see" section so that travelers would know how to get to what they want to see.

Frommer's Barcelona is packed with information (most of it very useful) but could use a few more pages from some useful maps and maybe a photo or two.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the holy trinity of Spanish cities.......2004-10-02

If you are going to vacation on a trip that includes all 3, or even 2 of these cities, then this is definitely an excellent book for a starting point, and may be the only book you need. You can get other books that cover each city individually in detail, which are helpful is spending more time in each city, but this Frommers book will give you enough material to fill 3 days in each city without needing another reference (the Time Out Guides are the best for nightlife). Frommers "Best Choices" are always worth referring to, best hotels, best restaurants, best experiences, etc.. No pictures, only a few maps, but great descriptions and advice.

4 out of 5 stars Be careful of what you write.......2004-07-18

Frommer's is an excellent guidebook (though I personally like Lonely Planet and DK, Frommer's is a solid 3). Some of the reviews I read have been negative, and it seems to be somewhat misplaced towards the guidebook.

I can understand that not finding a laundry is frustrating. But if that is your only gripe with it, why not leave it at that? It seems to me that any problems you may have with rude hosts is more of a personailty clash than anything a guidebook could help with.

Honestly, although not perfect, we found this book a more than adequate starting point for our Spanish adventure. My advice: Rate the book on it's own merits, and your vacation on your planning. The two should stay seperate.

All in all, I believe that this book, along with DK's line of books, are a good pick for info on a trip to these beautiful cities.

4 out of 5 stars A good summary of three key places to visit in Spain.......2003-11-07

Not wanting to lug around a tome covering all of Spain, and not wanting to purchase separate city guides for each of the places I intended to visit, I found this book to be a great compromise (since it covered three of the places I intended to visit). The book gives detailed critical reviews of hotels and restaurants, and points you to the most important sites in each area (with one walking tour of each and detailed information about various sites). This is a great book if you're planning to spend 1-3 days in one or more of these areas. It even gives travel information for places to visit surrounding each area (for example, offering a guide to Toledo, near Madrid). Overall, I was very pleased, especially considering the reasonable price. One warning, however, is that some of the maps (and the placement of items on those maps) are inaccurate.

1 out of 5 stars All Alone in Barcelona.......2001-07-26

While traveling through Europe, my husband and I decided to visit Barcelona. Since it was the only country we had not researched before we left, we decided we better pick up Frommer's guide. To our dismay, most of the information in it was inaccurate or misinforming. For example, the street the laundry was listed on was misspelled. When we finally found it (in the pouring rain) it was a laundry service, not self-serve. So there was 2 hours of "dead time" not to mention paying 3 times as much money for getting our clothes cleaned.

The silver lining I guess was that the laundry lady was one of the 3 nice Spanish people we met during our 6 day visit. I wish that Frommer's would have given us some forewarning on Spanish culture and rudeness. Even the service people in our 4 star hotel were grumpy. Everyone seems to need either a fiesta or a siesta.

On our final night in Barcelona, we counted our change and had just enough money to catch the metro and attend a Spanish dance. Upon our arrival (late because the directions were fuzzy) we found that both the time and the amount listed were incorrect. We then found out that the metro closes down earlier than the book states, so we got to spend our last pasettas on a cab ride back to our hotel. When I got back I was so aggravated that I could have started a bonfire with it.

There were several other ommissions and inaccuracies that we ran across but all in all my final straw was when I contacted Frommers online for a refund and read that they do not offer refunds--I needed to contact the point of purchase. No wonder it was the only English guide book left in Germany-nobody wanted it!

I learned a lot of things from our European excursion. One of the best I can tell you is use Lonely Planet guides! And visit the information station at the airport-they may not be friendly but at least their brochures are helpful!

3 out of 5 stars Could be fresher.......2007-10-12

This book follows the familiar format of Frommer's publications. Graphics make for easy, "glanceable" readability. The authors get right to the point about what is worthwhile, and what is over-rated. However, I could not give a higher rating to this book. My impression is that this is a new edition of guide material that was first developed some years ago. It needs to be freshened up more. For example, for Seville, the authors note that all train service is "now centralized into the Estación Santa Justa." As I discovered from my own research, this modern train station was completed in 1991. Yet, not one of the maps provided of Seville give any indication of the location of this 16-year-old major train station. The maps show two other train stations (Estacion de Cadiz and Estacion de Cordoba), and this makes me wonder whether the publisher was simply using a very outdated map of Seville. Information on hotels gives scant details about the availability of internet connections. In some cases, the listing indicates "dataport." Does that mean dial-up access? In the year 2007, most travelers who need internet access require some form of high-speed internet access. Overall, I would not say that this guide is quite up to the usual Frommer standards.
