A good Lonely Planet substitute.......2007-08-24
I decided to try something else than Lonely Planet for a change and I am happy. It definitely lacks (more) photos which catch the eye in LP! Other than that I have no complaints. I've found some great tips on what to do in NYC and what to skip. The info in the book is in my opinion the same as in the LP editions, you only need to get adjusted to a different layout (info on, say, entrance fees is usually at the end of an entry and not at the begining as in LP).
perfect!.......2007-07-13
If this is your first or your tenth time visiting NY, you'll definitely enjoy this excellent guidebook. An incredible source of information complete and up-to-date. The map is a plus and...it's a very good map too! This is a guidebook with an attitude. A guide written by a new yorker hence not too fond of the sometimes typical tourists attractions. But even so he manage to give full details on every little thing, like it or not. And Amazon was superb once again and I got my guidebook at the speed of light!
Disappointing.......2007-06-06
The most helpful part of the book were the maps and the restaurant information. I was really looking for a Rick Steves type of guidebook for New York. This was not it!
Frommer's is the best at these time and again..........2007-05-21
When I plan on traveling somewhere I haven't been, or somewhere I'm returning to, I am always sure to have the newest version on Frommer's handy. Actually, even the older versions are still a good resource for information, too. I cannot say a bad thing about this guidebook.
Frommer's New York City 2007.......2007-05-12
If you are looking for fancy pics, this is NOt your book. But if you want to have a peek to New Yorkers life, do purchase this book. Plenty of text and good advice beginning with how to get a taxi from where you can find best burgers in the city. If you are flying over Atlantic, you have plenty of time to get through with this book. Pair it with some more traditional tourist guide with pics and you have a working duo. Little minus from the fact that there are some old info, like the book is for 2007 and there's some info that some places will be closed in 2007.

most useful book for us in NY.......2007-05-19
Our family recently spent time in Manhattan. We took several books with us, and this was the one we found most useful. It's not perfect -- I found myself flipping pages a lot to connect restaurants and attractions etc, but it was still so loaded with good info that I always took it with me when we went out. We found several good restaurants that were just as depicted (though one was closed), and we chose several places to visit and were not disappointed. There's a good introductory chapter as well as excellent information about parks, playgrounds, restaurants, hotels, shopping, walks, entertainment and side trips. No pictures. Excellent resource.
A lot of wrong info........2006-07-25
We recently planned a trip to NYC with our 6 and 1 year old. I picked up this book, seeing as we have never been to NYC. The hotel we chose out of this book was in a neighborhood I would not consider safe for children. We ended up changing hotels because of it. The book said there was a children's playroom in our new hotel...there was not. We went to the Children's Museum of Manhattan, which the book says is good for kids 8 and under...our 6 year old was bored!! Also, the museum does not allow strollers, which I think is important info that should have been mentioned, but was not. There were other little bits of info that the book mentioned that were incorrect.
Needless to say, the book was packed away by the middle of the trip...it just wasn't reliable.
Great resource for first time visitors to NYC!.......2006-07-24
We recently spent a week in New York state for a family wedding. Three of those days were spent sightseeing in NYC with our two children, ages 6 and 3. This guidebook was invaluable! We used it to plan our agenda in advance, and then carried it with us on our trip. We had a great time, and we knew exactly where to go and what to do. This is a great resource for any family! I especially liked the detailed information about transportation options, playgrounds in the city, and family-friendly restaurants.
Not a Great Guidebook.......2006-07-10
This book covers a lot of information, but lacks details on key traveller needs. The maps are very poor and the information on the subway system is not enough to help first-time users get where they are going. We always wished we had more information. The only way I would recommend this book is if it was used in conjunction with another guidebook.
This book went everywhere with me!.......2005-10-07
I purchased two books for my recent visit to NYC (my first trip with kids.) This book (The other was "New York's 50 Best Places to take Children")was exactly what I needed to find great places to eat with my kids...and to help me figure out which tourist attractions were worth the time and cost. It's well-organized and has a great rating system for restaurants and sight-seeing. I looked at many guide books....and this one was the best!

Spend Less and See More in New York City:
Are You Ready to Travel Smart?
If you'd like to get the most out of your dollar and your trip, this is the guide for you. I put a fresh spin on budget travel, showing you how to see the best for less and how to see it in a more authentic way-the way the locals do.
Instead of spending $300 a night for a chain hotel, why not live it up in an antiques-filled Fifth Avenue mansion for just $75, or bed down in a SoHo gallery just steps from the artwork for $110?
Or how about enjoying falafel at Alfanoose for just $5, so you can splurge on up-and-coming chef Abdhul Traore's steak frites dusted with African herbs at Les Enfants Terribles?
Let me show you the "other" New York City-the one only insiders know about. Take a one-day cooking class with the city's top chefs or get free tango lessons at the Argentine Consulate. These are only a few of the great ways to get closer to the culture of New York City. Read on for more!
Happy Travels,

One of the best on NYC - not your typical travel guide!.......2007-09-07
One of the best guides on New York city. It does not list places like a typical travel guide! It gives you a good local's low-down on this city that can intimidate an outsider!
The Best Guidebook to NYC.......2007-08-22
I have been to NYC twice and picked up this guidebook in anticipation of my third trip to New York. I have not actually brought this book with me to NYC yet, but as far as I'm concerned, it's the best one out there. It has tons of ideas on how to visit the best places for the least amount of money. I probably saved a couple hundred just on tickets to shows and museums alone by using the tips in her book. I can't imagine traveling anywhere else without the help of Pauline. It truly is an amazing book. I particularly love the Accomodations section and The Essentials of Planning section. The only other book I would get to take on your trip is a good old trusty map. I personally recommend the Knopf Mapguides. With these two in tow, you're ready to hit the city and "Spend less, see more."
The only guide book you will need.......2007-08-09
I purchased three guide books in anticipation of a recent trip to NYC. After reviewing all three, I sent the other two back. This was the only guide book that I needed for a great visit to the city. The restaurant ratings were great, detailing reasonably priced restaurants that the locals frequent. The lodging B&B information was great too although I had already made my reservations before buying the book (the hotel I had picked turned out to be favorably reviewed in the book). The sightseeing and shopping sections and the getting around the city sections were right on and, besides saving us time and money, steered us to the best things to see and do for a limited stay. It is nice to have a guide book written by a local resident who really knows her way around the city!
From a fellow New Yorker.......2007-05-05
Having grown up in Manhattan but not lived there in 20 years, I was thrilled to find a NYC guidebook that not only provides excellent suggestions for enjoying NY to its utmost, but also gives really interesting historical/landmark information. It's well-written and engaging and a must-have for people who live in or out of the Big Apple. Kudos to Pauline Frommer!
Best travel guide on NYC I have ever read!.......2007-03-15
What a great travel guide this is! I recommend it to everyone who is going to New York, or even thinking about it! After reading this you will be ready to go, and be sure to take the book with you. You will need it as a valuable resource. Once I started reading it, I could not put it down.
Pauline breaks the city down into manageable areas and explores each one in depth. I now feel familiarized with New York like never before, and I have visited there 6 or 7 times in the past. I especially enjoyed the chapter on 'Remarkable Sights and Attractions'; including a section on New York's 12 Iconic sights. Some very interesting history along with tips for visiting each sight. The chapter on 'The Other New York' has both delightful and unique ideas to satisfy everyone's curiosity. The walking tours chapter shows a fascinating way to explore the city.
The book is well-written and includes every aspect of touring New York, from eating to shopping to sightseeing to anything else; and Pauline's love of this city is evident and infectious.
While other guidebooks can be vague and confusing (as well as cater to those with big budgets,) Pauline Frommer's New York guide is clear, concise, budget-minded, and fun to read. It shows that you really can visit New York on almost any budget and have a great time experiencing it all. This guide will be the first thing in my suitcase when I pack for our trip to NYC next month! Thanks Pauline Frommer, and I look forward to reading your other guides.

Ideal Resource for First Time Visit to NYC!.......2007-05-13
This was the perfect book for our first trip to NYC. The subway lines were accurate and easy to use. The fold out maps were perfect! All of the attractions are here with key tips, directions, and insider info. Follow the mapped out walking tours and you'll definitely see The New York that you imagined. The hotel info was okay, but more accurate info is available online. We'll definitely use our book again for the next trip to New York. Overall, this is a well thought book, and the perfect size to fit in your purse.

Useful book while touring New York State.......2005-05-29
My husband and I have recently semi-retired, and have spent considerable time traveling throughout the Finger Lakes as well as some other areas in New York State. We found the information contained in this guidebook to be well researched, concise, infomative and accurate. It is easy to find specific interests in the book, and we would highly recommend it to anyone interested in touring NYS.
Boring & uninformative.......2005-01-07
I found this book lacking in good ideas and it seemed to be written by somebody with a strange view of what is interesting and what is not. The writing is boring - maybe the author was trying to meet a deadline. I would skip this book.

A color map of the Manhattan subway system greets you as you open Memorable Walks in New York, right inside the front cover, setting the tone of convenient, accessible information. It's a very good start. The rest of the book follows suit with 10 walking tours, taking in Chinatown, the Lower East Side, SoHo, the Village, Central Park, the Financial District, Lower Manhattan, and the Upper East and West Sides.
Each tour provides subway-route starting points; a time estimate (generally three to five hours, not including restaurant stops); an excellent map of each neighborhood and its notable sites; plus a word of advice on the best times to be (or not to be) walking there. Then there's each walking-tour narrative, pointing out historic landmarks and events, and providing detailed route instructions for 20 to 50 notable sites. For the Chinatown tour, for example, 27 points of interest are listed on the itinerary, including vegetable sellers on Baxter Street, the Manhattan Bridge (built in 1905), Confucius Plaza (first major public-funded housing project built for Chinese use), and Bloody Angle, where two Chinatown gangs engaged in fierce turf warfare. There's a profile of dim sum, a selection of Chinese restaurants suitable for lunch breaks, the Ming Fay Book Store, the Chinatown History Museum, and Columbus Park. The tour ends on Rutgers Street near the East Broadway F-line subway entrance, a location you can find easily enough on that front-page subway map.
In all of the walking tours, Bramblett includes the same thoughtful attention to detail and the concerns of the visitor on foot, making for a compact, considerate guide and a lovely way to get to know New York. --Stephanie Gold

terrific guide to Manhattan.......2007-05-19
We recently returned from a trip to Manhattan and used this book (among others) to take a few self-guided walking tours. This book was easy to carry and filled with useful and fun information. The walks cover the following areas of Manhattan (but not the other burroughs): Lower Manhattan/Financial District, Chinatown, Jewish Lower East Side, SoHo, Greenwich Village Literary Tour, East Village, Midtown, Central Park, Upper West Side, Upper East Side -- nothing above the park. With those deficiencies in mind, we still found this guide useful and informative. It's well organized and includes info on nearby restaurants and transportation. Emphasis on the cultural, literary and political history of each area.
Highly Recommended.......2006-12-14
My wife and I just returned from a great ten days in New York City where we made great use of this book. We both enjoy walking through cities, and this is a nice guide for suggested routes through the different neighborhoods and things to see along the way. It's a good jumping off point for exploring on your own as well. For example, on the Harlem walk the guide brushes past Marcus Garvey park, but with further exploration, you can climb to the top of the hill and get a good overview of the whole city as well as see where real people come to relax and play. Central Park is the same thing. The walking tour there walks you past the highlights, then you can explore from there. For fans of this type of travel, I'd suggest a full day in Central Park.
On the downside, I would point out that only Manhattan is covered in the book with the other boroughs getting no coverage. As an introduction to the other boroughs, I would recommend a walk to and/or from Brooklyn over the Brooklyn Bridge. You can take the subway one of the ways if you like. The pedestrian walkway above the car deck is a boardwalk and you get views of Lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, etc. We walked back at sunset which was very nice. While in Brooklyn, be sure to stop in someplace for some beer and a slice or two of pizza either at the famous Grimaldi's or another pizza place you find.
Author Elevates Guide Above the Usual High Standard.......2001-03-02
This is a super book packed with great information! Reid Bramblett, while working within the generally great guidelines of the Frommer's travel series, also brings out his quirky and appealing sense of humor and warmth. (I actually sought out this book because I had bought another guide he had written.) He tells these great stories about SoHo, for example, that make it more than just a listing of information.
Like all the Frommer's guides, this provides great details on what to see, but encourages you to explore on your own as well. I have practically planned my trip around Reid's advice on the neighborhood walks, and this little book is a much more convenient and authentic way to experience New York than on a bus or something.
Like I said, any Frommer's book is great. The extra bonus on this book is the author's humor and warmth.

This book will pay for itself!.......2007-08-01
I used this book recently on a weekend trip to visit my friend in Manhattan. Not only did I eat very well for very little money but my foodie friend was shocked that I (the visiter) was showing her these amazing hidden gems! I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to live well on a very low budget.
Great guide to free activities.......2006-11-04
Even though I was going to NYC for just a few days, I found good info
in this book. Inside the cover was a weekly schedule for free entrance
to several museums. This was very handy.
Actually, to get more use from the book, one should be there a little
longer, or, better still, move there. Wonderful advice.
The best things in life are NOT free.......2006-06-21
Sometimes you need to pay for stuff in order to get stuff.
Someone has to make money somewhere. There are great free things, such as a few of the plays - but don't expect broadway.
Getting on the Today show was free.
Central Park was free.
The Staten Island Ferry was free.
Other books give better travel advice than this book and don't limit themselves to just the free things.
Indispensable........2006-06-07
In planning for my first trip to NYC, I was faced with a veritable wall of guide books to pick from at my local library. Because I like to look for the offbeat when travelling, and because, well, I'm poor (hence, the library), this one caught my eye right away.
It had me at hello (or, more accurately, the introduction entitled "The Best Things In Life Are Free"). Wolff's prose has the perfect blend of knowledge and wit to really make the places he's writing about come alive, with solid historical insights where applicable (the sections on Coney Island were quick but fun reads, quite informative for a newbie like me) and plenty of reference materials to help you plan out your days (maps, addresses, phone numbers, hours of operation, etc.). Especially handy are the subway map and free events calendars printed on the inside front/back covers--efficient and helpful on the go.
I knew the real test would come when my host in Brooklyn took a look at it--she's studying museum education and having lived there her whole life, knows many of the nooks & crannies around town. When I started showing her the listings about places like the Forbes Galleries, the original Winnie the Pooh housed at the NY Public Library, and panorama of NYC at the Queens Museum of Art (all free or very cheap), her eyes lit up. And I knew we had a winner on our hands. If it could impress a city slicker like her, no wonder it had impressed a hayseed like me.
If you're looking for a book that can take you off the beaten tourist track, or even if you live in NYC and are looking for some fresh ideas for cheap entertainment, I really can't recommend this highly enough. Good tips, great resource, and a fun read.
best book on NYC.......2006-03-13
this book has lots of inciteful tips that other books don't have. i highly recommmend it for anyone planning on going to NYC, to visit or moving there.
Book Description
This signature book captures the flavor of the "Borscht Belt," that fabled vacation area just "ninety minutes from Broadway." Summer romances, mambo time, menus with seven kinds of herring, musical and comedic greats getting their start, bungalows, and big hotels like Grossinger’s—all come back in a rush. Through the power of oral history, more than a hundred voices share stories that span nearly a century—recalling an experience that exists now only in memory.

Engaging Book Is Nearly As Fun As The Era It Celebrates.......2003-07-04
While working at the Nevele Country Club, one of the many legendary Catskill resorts covered in this magnificent document, I briefly met Myrna and Harvey Frommer while doing their research. They probably don't remember me, I was too young at the time to offer the kind of history they were looking for, but the pair's enthusiasm and obvious love for the area's resorts and their unique (now long gone) familial atmosphere was readily apparent. When I finally got to read this book, it provided me with a sense of pride for being a part of its history. There's even an ancient picture of my father playing sax in the old Art Kahn Orchestra! But aside from personal connections, this book stands as a definitive oral history of an era. The people interviewed are true insiders, some of them legends in their own right among Catskill lore. And while the book provides some deep sociological perspective concerning its ethnic background, the authors know how to balance this with charming, amazing and often sidesplitting anecdotes. If you ever spent a weekend at Grossinger's, The Concord, The Nevele or one of the dozens of small bungalow colonies, this book will wash you in warm memories. And if you didn't have the chance, it will make you wish you did.

Book Description
Mid-century Brooklyn was the home of the Dodgers, stoop-ball and stick-ball, a booming Coney Island amusement scene, and some of the best high schools in America. It also had a more somber side: gangs, red-lining, and block-busting. In this spirited evocation, more than one hundred voices reflect on the three decades in the borough between World War II and the Viet Nam War. Earthy and humorous, poignant and nostalgic, this book is an album, chronicle, and celebration of the Brooklyn of legend. Illustrated with period photographs.

Anecdotal history of growing up in Brooklyn........2005-04-03
This book is actually a compilation of anecdotal memories from many people who grew up in Brooklyn, some of whom are world famous for various reasons! While I was disapointed by the lack of coverage of the 50s and 60s when I grew up in East Flatbush, the book brings back wonderful memories of Coney Island and many other institutions. I particularly found the stories from the family that started Nathan's to be fascinating. I ALSO recommend the book "The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn." The two bookds are very different! While it is also light on the 50s and 60s it is fascinating to learn of the full history of each neighborhood. How and when the original Dutch settlers bought the various sections from the Canarsee and Rockaway Native Americans. It is also interesting to learn of the fates of the various neighborhoods and their changing ethnic faces.
I must add that it is at least a bit disingenuous and self-serving for one of the authors to write SEVERAL reviews of his own work!
A TREASURE OF A BOOK ON BROOKLYN.......2002-10-28
I just finished the book and I enjoyed it so much. Its easy to see why
Brooklyn has been the inspriation for so many novels and movies.
It was so interesting to see how so many different ethnic groups had such
similar stories of growing up. A real shared memory .
Well this book is a treasure and I am so glad to have it.

I bought this book this summer when I moved to NYC hoping to do some sightseeing and discover the city. The book has good information, it was just really out of date. It seems like everyhting I did from the book, the price or location was different from that printed or it was closed. I realize that happens, but for it to happen pretty consistently is a problem.

Easy to use-very informative. A good guide for a first time visitor. organized by interest groupings (dining, lodging, neighborhoods, etc) which makes it easy to find a specific subject.

This book had me more informed than some of the New Yorkers I spoke with during my trip. While on one of the double-decker tour buses, I was able to follow along with the easy to read map included with the book and garnered information about various sites that the tour guide did not even address!
The information about prices, hours of operation, hotels, and necessities was accurate and much appreciated by our group. My friends joked about my preparedness, but no one was sorry when we always knew where we were going, what it would cost to enter and how long we could stay. The tips about avoiding lines and how to get better deals were also very much appreciated!
Was a Big Help for Me.......2006-08-13
I recently had a brief vacation in New York City. I used this volume to help orient me (I have been in NYC before on many occasions, so I was not entirely clueless!). Overall, the book is a real plus for those who want to identify an agenda beforehand.
The book does a nice job of laying out restaurants, hotels, sites to visit, ways of touring the city, and so on. There are so many possible places to visit, eat, and stay that no volume can cover things completely.
Nonetheless, this book is a good resource to begin planning a vacation in the Big Apple. It's well worth purchasing as a means of figuring out the basic outlines of a visit to New York.
