Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the best I've seen so far.......2007-10-05

The reason I really like this is it gives very specific details on each campground. For example, it will even breakdown by the site number which ones have more trees, which are quieter, and, if there's a stream which sites are closest to the stream. It especially has a good introduction (Pg.1), stating that "life is short, and life is about choices...". It would be better, therefore, to stay at the best campground one can find, rather than simply making do with a run-of-the mill noisy, dumpy rv park. And this book only reviews the cream of the crop rv parks!

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-09-21

I found this book to be chock full of info. It is a little intimidating being it covers all states but very helpful. The enclosed maps makes it easier to locate campgrounds. I find this book helpful, informative and easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for campers and the like.......2006-12-29

Love the book and gave it as a Christmas gift - and he loves it. He is an RVer and I am a tent camper, so it is the best of both worlds. We haven't used it to be able to compare their ratings to our ratings, but just looking through it makes me ready to pack up and get out!! More information on places that I didn't even know existed surrounding me - and more!! Would make an excellent gift.

5 out of 5 stars Army Corps Of Engineers camp ground Modoc, SC.......2006-06-27

Just returned to Florida from three days at Modoc,SC Strom Thurman Lake and Dam. The Campground was everything the guide said it was. We were more than pleased and no complaints. We look forward to utilizing the guide again and hopefully soon...

4 out of 5 stars GREAT for the parks it covers, but doesn't cover enough.......2006-08-10

I found the information in this book much more useful than any other travel guide I have purchased. The lodging information for Yellowstone, for example, describes the state of specific room types at each location!

This book's one failing is its skimpy selection of parks.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-04-28

I really like this book. While it is supposedly geared for kids, I think it's very useful for finding interesting things to do at National Parks for everybody. I don't know why I didn't know this - but when I looked at the table of contents I realized just how few National Parks there are in the East. One side effect of reading this book is that it's made me realize what a precious resource these National Parks are to all of us, and it makes me wonder why there aren't more of them.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide.......2007-07-27

A very comprehensive guide for the state of Virginia. Even though I am a frequent visitor to Virginia, I found many new interesting places to add to future itineraries.

4 out of 5 stars A good overview of Virginia.......2004-07-24

Concise, up-to-date and useful descriptions of attractions, hotels and restaurants around Virginia. Not a tremendous amount of depth of information on any one spot, but if you're traveling around the state, this is a good guide.

4 out of 5 stars Gift item for Christmas.......2007-01-04

No feedback yet from the actual owners.
I have found Frommer's to be the best in travel books.
LOVE them for where to go and all the information I need for a great visit.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for tourists.......2006-11-10

This book gave us all the info we needed to plan our trip. The maps inside the cover were very helpful. Book has a lot on where to stay and eat, but only if you have lots of money. For the budget traveler, that info was too much considering how much everything they reviewed cost. Gave lots of info on where to go and what to see. Would recommend to anyone traveling.

4 out of 5 stars Still your best bet for a DC travel guide.......2006-08-31

I rated the 2004 edition of this book at 5 stars, but this edition has slipped just a bit for containing outdated information and omissions of a few other things, so I would say it deserves a 4-and-a-half star rating.

The major thing missing is a mention of The Circulator. This is the bus that loops from Capitol Hill through the K-street corridor to Georgetown, and is $1 to ride, and runs until 10pm. It is cheaper and runs much more frequently than the blue bus that is mentioned in the guide. The Circulator started in early 2005, so it should have made it into this year's edition of the Frommers.

The guide lists a Smithsonian Museum Hotline, and when I called this month (August 2006), the number was out of service.

The Phillips Collection is listed as being free during the weekdays. Wrong. The Phillips Collection is donation-only during the weekdays, and the gal at the desk did watch us drop some money in the donation box. Not a huge deal, but the information was inaccurate. The Phillips has doubled in size since the renovations were completed, and "The Boating Party" is once again on display after its long absence in a traveling exhibition, as is my favorite, "Woman With Dog" painted by Pierre Bonnard.

In the 2004 edition, there was a restaurant that my wife and I loved named Olives. It was not in this edition, but it is still in business and was a fabulous experience when we went (as it was 2 years ago). We enjoyed Olives vastly better than La Tosca (don't order the chicken at La Tosca...blah).

Another place that should be mentioned in the guide is The Capitol City Brewing Company right near China Town (with another location on Capitol Hill). The variety of micro-brews was fantastic, the staff was very friendly (especially Benny!), and during weekdays from 4pm until 7pm, they have half-price beers and appetizers at the enormous bar section (the sesame-covered seared tuna and the Asian quesadillas were absolutely delightful). A great place to visit if you are on a budget.

Even with these minor errors and omissions, it is still a highly valuable guide.

5 out of 5 stars Frommer's Washington DC 2006 guide has it all!.......2006-03-04

Frommer's continues its tradition of excellence with the 2006 guide to D.C. Most helpful to us were the "Getting to Know Washington D.C" chapter, and the chapter on "Suggested Itineraries". The pullout map is invaluable. If you've never been to D.C., or have not toured the city, this book is a fabulous reference.

Award-winning travel writers Shirley Slater and Harry Basch had tried just about every mode of transportation known to humans in their travels through 186 countries, but it wasn't until they drove an RV in 1991 that they found their passion. In the decade that followed they racked up 120,000 miles, avoided freeways whenever possible, and focused on discovering the offbeat and the best of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. While Exploring America by RV is aimed particularly at novices--with detailed advice on buying and renting RVs as well as RV'ing tips and hints on such things as what to look for in campsites, the miracle of bubble wrap, and "how to give backing-up directions without destroying your marriage"--it also outlines 10 excursions through the U.S., Canada, and Baja with enough unusual stops along the way that the book is a veritable gold mine. To get an idea of the sort of travel Slater and Basch prefer, here are some of the highlights of the California Desert & Las Vegas excursion: the Hullabaloo World Tobacco Spitting Championships, endangered desert pupfishes in Anza-Borrego State Park, and sand sailing in a dry lake at 70 mph with no brakes. Off-the-wall attractions in Alaska include the world's largest chopstick manufacturing plant, a collection of 3,600 billed caps, and the town of North Pole (where Santa gets his mail). Slater and Basch are fond of lists with names like: Ten Terrific Spots Where History Comes Alive (in the Blue Ridge Mountains); Ten Terribly Texas Things To Do; and Seven Swell Side Roads to Explore (in Baja). For each trip you'll find tips for keeping costs down, as well as suggestions for splurging (say, a helicopter ride around Mt. Rushmore or a stay on little Palm Island), a list of campground oases, and where to find some incredible-sounding treats (like bumbleberry pie at Zion National Park and the best lobster in Maine). Slater and Basch have had a good time demolishing the myth of RV'ers as national park lemmings who never leave their rigs: these guys know where the fun is. --Lesley Reed

1 out of 5 stars Misnomer.......2006-04-16

It's a lie - This book does NOT cover America. It covers 7 areas the include parts of a dozen states. It does not cover the Northwest, Arizona, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, the Southern states, or Florida north of Miami.
I found the book useless for my needs. I should have read the other reviews here on Amazon.com, but for some reason I missed doing that. Oh well, live & learn.

3 out of 5 stars Identical book to RV Vacations for Dummies.......2005-05-26

FYI: This book and the RV Vacations for Dummies are identical books.

2 out of 5 stars If you want detailed trips in the U.S., this is a good book........2001-11-22

The book opens with a couple of good chapters on the basics of RB'ing and gives an excellent diary of their first trip which made me feel better. However, chapters 4 through 13 are detailed examples of trips in the U.S. which i will not be takin any time soon. Chp 14-16 review RV types and manufacturers.

1 out of 5 stars a lot of wasted ink.......2001-08-05

The book wastes a lot of ink describing tourists sites in well-trodden parts of the US, ink that could have been spent carefully reviewing campgrounds.

2 out of 5 stars Frommers Exploring America by RV.......2001-07-04

I found this book to be trite and very limited in scope. Perhaps someone who has never gone rving before might enjoy it. Some of the mishaps of the authors were almost impossible to believe considering they are both educated people. Very disappointing.

My husband and I did a New England driving tour based on this book. I'd liked Frommer books before so basically used this book and the web (including the digital version of this book) to plan the trip. Not such a good idea.

There are lots of errors/difficulties with the book...just a few examples:
*Listings of lunch places that have NEVER served lunch (and you show up and the guy yells at you and has never heard of Frommers and oh by the way you're 20 minutes from the next location...and in all honesty, no one wants to be yelled at when they're on vacation).
*Dinner places that have closed down
*Maps that show roads that don't exist or that don't show key roads that you need
*Out of date info on hotels (including phone numbers)

I started keeping track and realized it wasn't my job to edit this book. But it was disappointing. It was still a great vacation and I would heartily recommend the vacation...but not the book.

3 out of 5 stars Skimpy on New Hampshire .......2007-05-31

This travel guide is heavily weighted toward Massachussetts and very thin on New Hampshire, and somewhat thin on Maine. In hindsight consider reviewing some of the other New England Guides such as Fodor's and Lonely Planet before considering this one. A bit of a disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars Good overall.......2005-10-22

We bought the Mobile book, the "Everything" book and this book. Of the three, this had the most detailed information. The maps are not great but the rest of the book makes up for that. The regional grouping was a great help.

5 out of 5 stars A travel guide for readers.......2002-10-15

Let's face it; most travel books are a glance-and-go proposition. Most of them do a passable job providing key information, but they aren't exactly a pleasure to read. Frommer's New England 2003 changes all that. Not only are the cititations clear, correct, and complete, many of them are laugh-out-loud funny or wickedly sly. At the end of a busy day on the road, I actually found myself reading the guide for fun (while happily settled in one of the recommended accommodations).A literate guide obviously written by folks in the know.

5 out of 5 stars Frommer's New England 2003.......2002-10-04

Great for a recent trip to Boston and Newport, RI.

The tips on what to see and what to avoid were dead on.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing for a travel guide.......2007-01-13

I have been living in Seattle for 5 months and I got this book to navigate around, but this was disappointing.
The book is more like a short reading about the city, rather than a travel guide. I would not be able to navigate myself around if I were traveling Seattle using this book.
I think this book is for people who read other standard travel guides such as LonelyPlanet, and want to know more.
I did buy LonelyPlanet after buying this book.

3 out of 5 stars sleepless in seattle.......2006-11-10

This is my first Frommer's travel book, I've always used Let's Go before, and the only reason I brought Frommer's is because Let's Go doesn't have a Seattle edition. I find that I still prefer Let's Go in terms of the writing style, amount of detail and organization. Let's Go organizes in terms of area, for example, if you're exploring a particular neighborhood, you can just mark a chapter and you'll find everything in that chapter, i.e. sights, dining, accomodations, nightlife, etc. On the other hand, Frommer's organizes in terms of things to do, so you need to go to a different chapter to find a restaurant, and another chapter to find a hotel. Even the maps are organized this way - there are different maps for the same area for dining, accomodations, etc. I found the constant flipping through the pages very cumbersome. Also, Frommer's maps are not as detailed and harder to follow. For instance, we were exploring the Pike Place Market area and the map says there's supposed to be a restaurant there, but it wasn't. Frommer's doesn't provide detailed instructions on how to get from one place to another. Frommer's does provide categories with a varying range of prices - from very expensive, to moderate, and affordable. However, for the budget-minded traveler, I highly recommend Let's Go.

On the other hand, if you're only going to stay in Seattle and the surrounding areas, I would still pick Frommer's out of all the other books available because the other books include the entire Northwest area and only has a small chapter on Seattle. I do like the best things-to-do or eat lists

3 out of 5 stars Fairly Good..........2006-07-18

I found this guide book to be relatively helpful in my Seattle travels. I liked the fact that it gave day trip suggestions from the Seattle area (San Juan Islands, Mount Rainier, etc.), had some nice color pictures in the front, and gave some good summary itineraries in the beginning for people with varying degrees of time to spare. I don't refer to this as religiously as some other guidebook series I have for other cities, though. I found that it was lacking in quirky things to do or restaurants to eat at and really just summarized the overwhelmingly "normal" tourist things to do. It's a good first reference especially if you don't have a lot of time to see the city, but you might want something more detailed or a little less mainstream if you're going to have a substantial amount of time to explore the city...

consistent and non-byass reviews that were easy to read. the book lacked some color, but overall, it satisfied my expectations.

5 out of 5 stars This book will pay for itself!.......2007-08-01

I used this book recently on a weekend trip to visit my friend in Manhattan. Not only did I eat very well for very little money but my foodie friend was shocked that I (the visiter) was showing her these amazing hidden gems! I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to live well on a very low budget.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide to free activities.......2006-11-04

Even though I was going to NYC for just a few days, I found good info
in this book. Inside the cover was a weekly schedule for free entrance
to several museums. This was very handy.

Actually, to get more use from the book, one should be there a little
longer, or, better still, move there. Wonderful advice.

3 out of 5 stars The best things in life are NOT free.......2006-06-21

Sometimes you need to pay for stuff in order to get stuff.

Someone has to make money somewhere. There are great free things, such as a few of the plays - but don't expect broadway.

Getting on the Today show was free.
    Central Park was free.
The Staten Island Ferry was free.

Other books give better travel advice than this book and don't limit themselves to just the free things.

    5 out of 5 stars Indispensable........2006-06-07

In planning for my first trip to NYC, I was faced with a veritable wall of guide books to pick from at my local library. Because I like to look for the offbeat when travelling, and because, well, I'm poor (hence, the library), this one caught my eye right away.

It had me at hello (or, more accurately, the introduction entitled "The Best Things In Life Are Free"). Wolff's prose has the perfect blend of knowledge and wit to really make the places he's writing about come alive, with solid historical insights where applicable (the sections on Coney Island were quick but fun reads, quite informative for a newbie like me) and plenty of reference materials to help you plan out your days (maps, addresses, phone numbers, hours of operation, etc.). Especially handy are the subway map and free events calendars printed on the inside front/back covers--efficient and helpful on the go.

I knew the real test would come when my host in Brooklyn took a look at it--she's studying museum education and having lived there her whole life, knows many of the nooks & crannies around town. When I started showing her the listings about places like the Forbes Galleries, the original Winnie the Pooh housed at the NY Public Library, and panorama of NYC at the Queens Museum of Art (all free or very cheap), her eyes lit up. And I knew we had a winner on our hands. If it could impress a city slicker like her, no wonder it had impressed a hayseed like me.

If you're looking for a book that can take you off the beaten tourist track, or even if you live in NYC and are looking for some fresh ideas for cheap entertainment, I really can't recommend this highly enough. Good tips, great resource, and a fun read.

this book has lots of inciteful tips that other books don't have. i highly recommmend it for anyone planning on going to NYC, to visit or moving there.

A color map of the Manhattan subway system greets you as you open Memorable Walks in New York, right inside the front cover, setting the tone of convenient, accessible information. It's a very good start. The rest of the book follows suit with 10 walking tours, taking in Chinatown, the Lower East Side, SoHo, the Village, Central Park, the Financial District, Lower Manhattan, and the Upper East and West Sides.

Each tour provides subway-route starting points; a time estimate (generally three to five hours, not including restaurant stops); an excellent map of each neighborhood and its notable sites; plus a word of advice on the best times to be (or not to be) walking there. Then there's each walking-tour narrative, pointing out historic landmarks and events, and providing detailed route instructions for 20 to 50 notable sites. For the Chinatown tour, for example, 27 points of interest are listed on the itinerary, including vegetable sellers on Baxter Street, the Manhattan Bridge (built in 1905), Confucius Plaza (first major public-funded housing project built for Chinese use), and Bloody Angle, where two Chinatown gangs engaged in fierce turf warfare. There's a profile of dim sum, a selection of Chinese restaurants suitable for lunch breaks, the Ming Fay Book Store, the Chinatown History Museum, and Columbus Park. The tour ends on Rutgers Street near the East Broadway F-line subway entrance, a location you can find easily enough on that front-page subway map.

In all of the walking tours, Bramblett includes the same thoughtful attention to detail and the concerns of the visitor on foot, making for a compact, considerate guide and a lovely way to get to know New York. --Stephanie Gold

5 out of 5 stars terrific guide to Manhattan.......2007-05-19

We recently returned from a trip to Manhattan and used this book (among others) to take a few self-guided walking tours. This book was easy to carry and filled with useful and fun information. The walks cover the following areas of Manhattan (but not the other burroughs): Lower Manhattan/Financial District, Chinatown, Jewish Lower East Side, SoHo, Greenwich Village Literary Tour, East Village, Midtown, Central Park, Upper West Side, Upper East Side -- nothing above the park. With those deficiencies in mind, we still found this guide useful and informative. It's well organized and includes info on nearby restaurants and transportation. Emphasis on the cultural, literary and political history of each area.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2006-12-14

My wife and I just returned from a great ten days in New York City where we made great use of this book. We both enjoy walking through cities, and this is a nice guide for suggested routes through the different neighborhoods and things to see along the way. It's a good jumping off point for exploring on your own as well. For example, on the Harlem walk the guide brushes past Marcus Garvey park, but with further exploration, you can climb to the top of the hill and get a good overview of the whole city as well as see where real people come to relax and play. Central Park is the same thing. The walking tour there walks you past the highlights, then you can explore from there. For fans of this type of travel, I'd suggest a full day in Central Park.

On the downside, I would point out that only Manhattan is covered in the book with the other boroughs getting no coverage. As an introduction to the other boroughs, I would recommend a walk to and/or from Brooklyn over the Brooklyn Bridge. You can take the subway one of the ways if you like. The pedestrian walkway above the car deck is a boardwalk and you get views of Lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, etc. We walked back at sunset which was very nice. While in Brooklyn, be sure to stop in someplace for some beer and a slice or two of pizza either at the famous Grimaldi's or another pizza place you find.

5 out of 5 stars Author Elevates Guide Above the Usual High Standard.......2001-03-02

This is a super book packed with great information! Reid Bramblett, while working within the generally great guidelines of the Frommer's travel series, also brings out his quirky and appealing sense of humor and warmth. (I actually sought out this book because I had bought another guide he had written.) He tells these great stories about SoHo, for example, that make it more than just a listing of information.

Like all the Frommer's guides, this provides great details on what to see, but encourages you to explore on your own as well. I have practically planned my trip around Reid's advice on the neighborhood walks, and this little book is a much more convenient and authentic way to experience New York than on a bus or something.

Like I said, any Frommer's book is great. The extra bonus on this book is the author's humor and warmth.
