This is a must-read book for all Arizona fly anglers........1999-02-19
These two authors have taken much of the guess-work out of fly fishing new trout waters in Arizona. Their combined experience and knowledge have been put together to aid both beginner and experienced fly fishermen. Virtually every productive trout water in the state is covered, along with tips, techniques, directions, and tackle needed to be productive. The book is both fun and easy to read, plus extremely educational for the fly angler seeking to fish Arizona's trout waters. This is the much needed book that every fly fisherman/woman in Arizona has been waiting for. If you are even thinking about fishing in this state, read this book!
This has opened to my eyes to what I have in my own backyard.......1998-12-28
I would like to commend the authors for a great job on a book that has given the Arizona resident like myself a new outlook on fly-fishing. I am excited about using the plethera of information that I have, and cannot wait until I can put this information to work on my next outing. Thank you Charlie and John for a job well-done!!
I am a Arizona born Fly Angler who endorses this book........1998-12-13
Reading Arizona Trout Streams, I thought my spots were being exposed. But as I got into the feel of the writers tone, I felt as if I were reading something written by a friend who was sharing his secrets. The book is punctuated by Arizona Fly Anglers names, friends of the authors who wrote the book. A nice touch. Certainly most people like to see their name in print, especially a book on our subject. Organized by geographics, the pages move from one stream to another in good form. Not all streams are listed, just the ones that are well known, and a few that aren't. One of my favorite streams is listed. The author gives it a poor rating, and for this I am happy. It seems that his idea of a small stream rating and mine do not closely match. That is ok by me, life is not black and white. There are some streams that I haven't even heard of. I know the area where they drain, but I haven't heard of them through my information channels or in my wanderings. I have a log, even one a little more in depth than I show you online. I check the insect hatches in my notes, and the hatches listed in Arizona Trout Streams is dead on. My knowledge of entomology is limited, but what I do know, I can say that it certainly matches the book. That my friends is a great feeling because I feel so lost when it comes to the Latin part of flye angling. I would have paid more for color pictures, but the black and white photographs are excellent. The pictures in the book look like ones that we have all taken. For instance, the Haigler Creek photograph is what I am talking about. A good look at what the stream really is. There is a section on Lee's Ferry that has been fully researched. The history of Trout strains at this tailwater are discussed along with flys and techniques used. I am impressed that I could have learned so much from a paperback book written on my subject. (my ego, has been deflated! just kidding.) Again, what a great book. Arizona Trout Streams is a must own for every Arizona Fly Angler and anyone who wants to know more about our Trout Streams. If you are thinking about coming to Arizona, go and purchase this book. It will make your knowledge of our streams match even some of us who have fished here our whole lives. Thank you Charles Meck and John Rohmer for making such a great book. I have been sweating it for a long time, and now I know that I am indeed learning many things, along with some new streams.

Don't Know What the Problem Is.......2006-02-28
I think this is a very good book; it's well-written, accurate (for 1995, when it was completed), and it even has a certain "literary" quality. I read the whole 200 pp. in a couple of days without "slobering" (I think this is supposed to mean slobbering, see review below) one bit.
Don't know what all of the hype is!.......2005-01-25
I don't know if it was because the author himself really thought this was a good book, or if it was because I had other things on my mind while reading it. Rex Johnson is a fair writer, and does provide interesting information at times. However, I found myself falling asleep, slobering while I was reading it. I guess fly fishing is not for me! Illustrations in the book are up to par. If you like fly fishing, maybe, borrow it before you think about buying it. Really!
A Fine Gila Wilderness Primer.......2004-06-22
The kind of "excellence" described in the author's (excellent) introduction pervades this detailed guide. Historical anecdote is meticulously intertwined with drily philosophical musings on the uneasy relationship between cow, cowboy and trout. Tips for fly types and sizes, line weights, rod lengths and other technicia may seem somewhat cursory,as the author's great affinity is not for technique and equipment but for the wild trout he has caught here. There is a certain "reading between the lines," necessary to get full benefit from this book -- in this way it can be as rewarding (or frustrating) as what is sometimes called literature.
A hidden world in the Gila.......2001-10-21
This book is simply the best available for southern New Mexico, and one of the bext of its type. Very comprehensive. It's clear that the author has actually been to and caught fish at the many remote spots he describes, over a period of many years. If you are even thinking of visiting the remote mountains of southern New Mexico, this is for your bookshelf
A great book for a beautiful area........2000-04-25
I have been a fly fisherman from time to time over the last ten years or so, and I lived in the Southwest from 1977 until 1998. My family returned to the area for a vacation and re-visited the Gila National Forest last summer, equipped with a lot of fishing gear and Rex's book. FFSNM seemed to bring the Gila's trout streams to life. This book is a kind of "sleeper'. Not many people have read it, but it's a good example of quality outdoing quantity. A lot of really good things in this world, like this book, remain overlooked, but that's probably fortunate in this case, because, like Rex Johnson, Jr., I liked having the Gila all to myself.
Book Description
The fifty fly patterns described in these pages have proven reliable in the fly-fishing streams and rivers of northern New Mexico over many years. Developed by thirty locally respected tyers, they are not widely known or sold commercially outside the region. None are either legally patented or copied from widely known standard flies or patterns.
This rich and varied group of patterns reflects diverse approaches to fly-fishing and tying. The authors organize the fly patterns by type: dries, nymphs, wets, streamers, midges, and terrestrials. Each section describes the shared traits of the flies, their construction and usefulness, and the best methods for fishing with them. The description of each fly includes a thumbnail history, recipe, tying instructions, and a photograph. An appendix provides recipes for additional useful patterns described in other manuals. The authors cannot guarantee fly-fishing success but they do promise fun at fishing and tying.
Illustrates fishing flies developed by locally-respected fly tyers, with step-by-step instructions for fly fishing success in northern New Mexico.
Customer Reviews:
Nicely Done!.......2007-06-12
This is a nicely done regional book. It is spiral bound, which I really like in a fly pattern book. Good crisp b&w photo of each fly pattern. The "fly recipes" and step by step directions for tying each fly are well written. The b&w illustrations are very nicely done as well. If you plan on fly fishing S CO or N NM, and tye your own flies, you will want to get a copy well ahead of your trip so you have plenty of time to try some of these patterns out.
Lives up to its billing.......2001-09-05
If you live in New Mexico or southern Colorado and fish or tie flies you will like this book. It catalogs unusal regional fly patterns and the waters to fish them. I, of course, haven't tied or fished all of the patterns in the book but its an enjoyable read. Because these flies are not going to be found in even some of the best fly shops in the region the recipes and tying instructions are worth the price. The instructions also include a variety of techniques that are not as well described in other fly tying manuals. The only negative I can think of is the lack of color pictures, but I have a good enough imagination not to need them. Besides I'm a sucker for books from the University of New Mexico Press.

Excellent coverage of where and how to fish New Mexico........1998-06-14
New Mexico has more opportunities than one would imagine for fishing a desert state. However, one typically needs a little help finding the water. Piper's book covers nearly every possible fishing lake, stream, and river in New Mexico with valuable tips on when and how to fish each body of water. Well-organized into the major river drainages, Piper also provides basic maps for each area. The writing is clear and helpful. The only drawback is that the book is now slightly old and some of the details are out of date (access points have closed, new lakes have appeared, etc.). Perhaps a new edition is in the works. The maps could also be a little better, presently they are somewhat cartoonish. Overall, however, this is the best guide to fishing New Mexico.
Book Description
ÂSolitude and fine fishing can often be found together on small streams. They seldom coexist on big rivers.ÂÂfrom Holy Ghost Creek
Frank WeissbarthÂ's beautifully written fishing memoir evokes the private pleasures and the mystery of angling in small streams, beginning on a Rocky Mountain creek known as Holy Ghost. He shares the wisdom he has accumulated on countless days fishing this and other streams, presenting his knowledge with wit and a profound reverence for the beauty of the sport and the places it is practiced. He offers detailed descriptions of Holy Ghost Creek and other waters, named and unnamed, but this is by no means a guidebook or a how-to book. Rather, it is a celebration of the joys of small streams and quiet adventures.
ÂThere are things beneath the surface of the river that I will never know. There is not time enough to learn them and the river is always changing. But sometimes, on a rare day, for a few moments or hours, the barrier between water and land vanishes, and I see the trout in their watery world and hear the sound of the stream and the wind in the trees and watch as insects hover over the water and a mink slips silently along the bank. It is an intimacy born of long hours on the water, of study and of love. It is why I fish.ÂÂfrom Holy Ghost Creek
Weissbarth imparts his knowledge and love of fly fishing with a profound reverence for the beauty of the sport and the places it is practiced.

A journey with rare trout, high mountains and small rivers.......2005-07-01
Frank Weissburth captures the heart and soul of New Mexico and the beauty of small mountain rivers in an elegant set of essays that both document and illuminate fishing for rare trout in small waters. His writing is a love letter to places both special and beautiful. Woven in the essays on these small fragile waters are meditations on children, friends, dogs, old but trustworthy (to a point) cars, learning to fish and learning to care. He illuminates with thoughts about his growth in concern for the the streams and the mountains and the world beyond both of them.
The Philosophy of Fishing for Cutthroats.......2004-10-15
This is a wonderful book. It is a lyrically written expression of Mr. Weissbarth's keen and experienced observations of the beauty and wonders of Northern New Mexico's mountain streams and the trout that inhabit them, as well as a statement of the deep connection between himself and this unique environment. His respect and reverence are apparent. I have read many of John
Gerach's fine essays on fly fishing, rivers, and life. I have read Howell Raines' Fly Fishing Through Mid-Life Crisis. Holy Ghost Creek stands with these works.
