You'd be hard-pressed to find a more comprehensive, engrossing, and just plain fun-to-read guidebook than the Eyewitness Travel Guide: Venice and the Veneto. Spilling over with all sorts of useful information for the traveler, you'll find three-dimensional drawings, floor plans, and detailed neighborhood maps, as well as timelines, charts--even the most scenic canal routes. Broken down into four sections--"Venice," the "Veneto Region" (which takes in Verona and the Dolomites), "Traveler's Needs," and "Survival Guide"--the guide paints a complete picture of the area. Readers will especially love the hundreds of color photos of everything from Venice's famous Rialto Bridge to the lavish costumes worn for Carnival. You'll also find illustrated neighborhood walks (including San Marco, Dorsoduro, and the Castello), room-by-room explanations of the Doge's Palace and the Basilica San Marco, and the best cafes (Caffe Florian), hotels (the Gritti Palace), and bars (Harry's, the birthplace of the bellini). --Jill Fergus

Book Description

Areas covered include: San Marco, San Polo, Santa Croce, Castello, Dorsosuro, Cannaregio, the Lagoon Islands, the Veneto Plain, Verona, Lake Garda, and the Dolomites.

5 out of 5 stars Learned so much before I even got to Venice!.......2007-01-06

The DK guide books are becoming a necesity for us on our travels. The pictures give you an idea of what you'll see, but what's helpful, is that based on what you read, you can narrow down what is on your priority list. Because honestly, unless you're going to be in a place for over a month, you can't see everything.

Liked it alot. The chapter about how they built Venice was very interesting. A must have book if you are going to Venice or the Veneto.

5 out of 5 stars Best Travel Book .......2005-08-26

I could not be more happier with the Eyewitness Travel Guide books. Last year my mother and I went to Prague and had the Prague book of the series with us. We relied on this book to guide us through the entire city, and it did. These books are absolutely wonderful. They are so helpful in finding you anything you need! They have detailed plans and maps of the cities, and provide you with information on just about everything! We just recieved the Venice & the veneto and florence & tuscany books. They have so much information about these cities amidst beautiful photographs and maps. You will not be dissappointed if you buy this book, or any other from the series. They are a lifesaver, and a tour guide in writing!

Another good portable travel guide. Readers won't be disappointed and will find plenty of good, practical information.

5 out of 5 stars Make Eyewitness essential part of your travel fun.......2004-05-01

DK's Eyewitness Travel Guides are our best travel companion during our tour of Europe. Full of tips, pictures, maps, site info, history, local reference ... every page is not only helpful but beautiful. The layout anf format is very innovative and reader friendly, a ture standing out from any other travel books. It was interesting to see that almost everywhere we went, we saw other people (tourists apparently) holding and checking the same DK book on the street.
The coverage is comprehensive and growing year after year, Paris, Rome, Florence, Venice ... every city we went have its own Eyewitness serie. We studied them before our trip, consulted them during our trip, and kept them as memo and photo book after our trip. They are simply essential part of the travel fun.

I recommend buying indiviual city/area book wherever possible instead of the country book. For example, buy Rome, Florence, and Venice books instead of Eyewitness Italy (unless your destination doesn't have its own Eyewitness). That way you get more detailed and targeted info.

Book Description

Think 'Venice,' and images of gondolas drifting along misty canals and pigeon-feeding visitors dwarfed by the splendor of St. Mark's and its square come unavoidably to mind. If it's Venetian icons visitors are after, this magical city will never disappoint. But for a more rounded experience, the longtime residents and experts who have contributed to the fifth edition of Time Out Venice lead travelers down back streets and into campi and calli where few tourists tread: to hidden churches with hidden artworks; to architectural and sculptural gems in concealed courtyards; and to districts where the everyday life of Venice goes on in time-honored, washing-festooned, market-haggling fashion. This guide explores every inch of the fabled city on water — with particular attention paid to mid-price and alternative accommodations and dining venues — and covers the entire Veneto region — its other historic cities, rolling vine-covered hills, ski resorts, and surprisingly wild club scene.

i was really hoping this would be a great book, but i was severely disappointed. this was the only book i bought for Venice, and i wish i had saved my money. i ended up getting a DK eyewitness book and it was way better. the information didn't seem to be up to date, and we found better suggestions from our hotel.

5 out of 5 stars The ONLY guidebook you will need!.......2005-07-28

I've tried most every travel guidebook there is and the TIME OUT books cover the most extensive array of information. No longer will you need one book for the best sites and one for restaurants, etc. This one will give you pretty much everything you will need to know to have an enjoyable trip in Venice.

This volume provides an account of the art and architecture of Venice and the principal cities of the Venetian mainland empire in the Renaissance, from 1450 to1600. Thematically organized, it puts special emphasis on the relationship between art and the political, social, and religious institutions of the Venetian Republic. The creative achievements of major painters such as Bellini, Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese and of major architects such as Sansovino and Palladio are viewed in the context of the particular needs and ideologies of individual and institutional patrons.

          Customer Reviews:

          3 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2006-10-10

I've used this on two visits. And twice it's done it's job well. While I can't vouch for the accommodation section - we'd pre-booked - the info on the sights is thorough, though at times a little over the top. For example, the way the author drools over the view from the connecting bridge between Murano and Burano... if I'd written the book, that `view' wouldn't even have deserved a mention. I prefer guides that tell it as it is - if something's truly outstanding, then I want to know; if it's merely something to see if you're passing, then I want to know I can skip it without being plagued by the thought I might have missed something spectacular. Some things, like Scoule Grande de Rocco (excuse the spelling, but I don't have the book to hand) was virtually deserted - maybe everyone was using this book because it didn't do any justice in describing the masterpieces on display here. As proof of that, we didn't visit this place on our first visit, only on the last day of our second, when we were running out of things to see. Well, guess where will be high on the list to return to next trip. That said, this is a decent guide, but like so many others, it just has certain failings.

          4 out of 5 stars opinion.......2005-09-08

I really don't care for Lonely Planet's Italy Guide so I purchased this guide. The maps are good and the floor plans of important buildings are very helpful.

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag... wait for the new edition?.......2004-06-13

Just got back from a trip to Venice, and between us and our travelling companions we must have had 6 different books. This Rough Guide ended up being the book I carried with me when touring historical sites, as it had the most detailed descriptions and the best background information. The section at the end on Venice's history was fascinating. But the book is definitely getting dated -- many prices are still listed in Lire, and many of the hours of the various sights around town were incorrect. We also found the restaurant reviews a bit off from reality. Rick Steves' book was a much better reference for these things, particularly on restaurants which were all wonderful.

3 out of 5 stars Perfect? No, it is not. And it can bore you to death........2002-11-03

Yes, Rough Guide is comprehensive, it lists minor details and it is very strong on practicalities.

However, leaf through hundreds and hundreds of its pages and you may be excused for thinking you are reading a telephone directory. The book laboriously lists everything that there is to be listed, but it does that in a dull tone that lacks focus, inspiration and personal touch. I have seen tax planning guides that were more thrilling to read.

The information is all there, but you don't want to go through it. There is nothing to focus attention and nothing to thrill you - just a steady stream of facts and information. Sometimes, it seems they were trying put in as much as possible and to go for the highest possible number of pages. Thick book equals good book at Rough Guide publishing, but this approach does not serve all destinations equally well: what is OK for Africa is not necessarily true for most sophisticated and refined cities in Europe.

Maybe if I was about to settle in Venice for a few months, I would get a Rough Guide to keep myself on top of all practical info, but for a briefer trip you need more inspiration and more color. Travel writing is not the same thing as directory compilation, and this sheer sparkle of writing talent is something that is so distinctly missing.

Buying a Rough Guide or a Lonely Planet guide is very much an ideological decision: many readers do it because they feel that they subscribe to the same ideas about the world that form editorial policy of these two publishing houses.

However, if one is able to quite simply look for best guidebook which would make a trip enjoyable, Rough Guide Venice would hardly be one of them.

          5 out of 5 stars La Serenissima.......2002-09-13

Over the past few weeks I think I have read all the guide books on Venice there are on the market (a very crowded market), and this one leads the pack.

It is not for the person looking for pretty pictures, that is true. But it is the most comprehensive, most insightful, and ultimately most helpful.

The Time Out Guide is also very good, especially its listings section, some interesting background, terrific colour maps (complete with street index), and nice pics and Lonely Planet looks more than adequate, but it is Rough Guide I am most impressed with.

That is because of the depth of information on many places. There are really clear black & white maps of the layouts of things like the Basilica and Doge's Palace, and sestiere maps. I decided this is the guide I want to read at night or in a quiet corner when actually visiting places.

With its lovely waterways, stunning architecture, and spirited carnival, it's no wonder that Venice has enchanted visitors for centuries. In Venice and the Veneto, photographers Sonja Bullaty and Angelo Lomeo capture the allure of this unforgettable city in rich, full-color photographs that resemble fine paintings. Each of the nine chapters focuses on a different Venetian theme, including "A Watery Realm," in which breathtaking views of the city's waterways may be found, and "Piazza San Marco," "a compelling image whether the day is just dawning, already well advanced, or drawing to a close." Bullaty and Lomeo also turn their expert eyes to the beautiful region surrounding Venice, the Veneto, which "encompasses Palladian palaces, medieval villages, vineyards, and the Dolomite Mountains." Such splendid photographs, when coupled with the musings on Venice from distinguished writers, artists, and musicians sprinkled throughout the text, make "the ideal gift book for those who have experienced the magic of Venice and long to return, as well as those who look forward to exploring this magical city and discovering the Veneto."

3 out of 5 stars More artistic than Venetian.......2000-12-29

Having been to Venice and the surrounding area, I was excited about getting a book that would contain high quality photos of what I saw, however, the selection of photographs in this book was pretty disappointing. I'm shocked that it doesn't contain a single picture of St. Mark's Basilica, one of the most famous pieces of architecture in the world. Also, I would have appreciated more mountain scenes and fewer pictures of blooming trees, masks, windows, and statues of animals. Overall, it's an interesting and pretty book but with too many pictures of boring things.

4 out of 5 stars Captured the beauty of Venice.......1999-01-28

Venice and the Veneto has some very charming pictures of both Venice and the islands and inland surrounding it. The pictures are beautifully taken at various times in the day at different angles. I would recommend this as a coffee table book to whom ever has a love for Venice. I did think though that it would have been even a more delight for me if it had more works on the not so familiar aspects of Venice- such as the trailing tresses of plants or the gardens hidden in stone walls.

4 out of 5 stars This one will go with me...........2001-02-07

This guide is a keeper, if only for the great maps! Arranged by neighborhood, I can see myself needing them when I'm in Italy. Also, I like the "day-trips" section for each city. Other city guides don't have this information, and it's really helpful for that day out. The guide is a bit long, so you have to make sure that your day trip bag is large enough for it.

What this guide does lack is depth - historical, artistic depth. If you are traveling in Venice or Florence, it is just essential that you know about what you're seeing. That's part of why we go to these amazing historic sites. I would suggest traveling with a Blue Guide for each city that you visit. They are a great packing size, and they offer so much more descriptive information. They don't offer too much practical information, so that's why I'll be taking the Access Guide with me too.

5 out of 5 stars the only travel guide we actually pack.......2000-09-22

This guide series is one of the easiest to use and especially if you have never travelled to the destination before. Broken both into regions or neighborhoods and color coded to distinguish restaurants, hotels, shopping and points of interest. This is very useful when one finds themselves hungry in an unfamilair part of town. The reviews are very good, with great recomendations. You will never want to use another travel guide after this series.

4 out of 5 stars Great handy travel guide with terrific layout.......2000-01-30

This is a great book if you only want to pack 1 travel guide on your vacation. All points of interest are listed in the same order you would find them as you walk through each neighborhood, and they're clearly labeled on the neighborhood maps. The writing is very engaging and candid, offering just enough art historical background to get a better understanding of points of interest, while restaurant and hotel reviews offer the "inside scoop." Contrary to the previous reviewer, I liked the "personal touch" of having residents list their favorite spots - who cares if they've been paid or not - their suggestions are still good. Color-coding also makes for very handy reference. I loved this book and highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars There are better travel books on Florence & Venice.......1999-08-23

This book confuses succinct, targeted travel information with "informationals" about those who may have paid to get in the book. It is not a well organized book.

          Book Description

Italy's northernmost zone, the Veneto includes Padua, Verona, Vicenza, plus Venice itself, which once ruled the area. Some 5,000 Renaissance villas still stand, many by Palladio. A food- and wine-lover's paradise, it's also the most artistically rich region in Italy, and the most romantic, with the art of Giotto and Mantegna in Padua, the Roman ruins in Verona, the canals and palaces in Venice itself. Bellini, Tintoretto, Veronese and Titian worked here. Experience their art and be part of their world, with the insights of an insider. Every detail is here about the foods, the sights, the best places to stay and eat.
