"Periodization," nutrition, stretching, peaking--who knew that so much went into riding a bike? Joe Friel's The Cyclist's Training Bible is jam-packed with information, easily the most authoritative book on cycling to date. Friel, a lauded coach and masters athlete from Colorado, adopts the principles of Dr. Tudor Bompa, whose periodization training methods were used first by the dominant Eastern European athletes of the 1960s before becoming popular in the United States.

Book Description

The Cyclist’s Training Bible is designed to help amateurs create a training plan and refine the skills needed to succeed in the sport. Divided into five parts, the book covers commitment and common sense, general concepts, training with a purpose, designing a yearlong plan, and practical strategies for reinforcing training. Dozens of photos, charts, tables and worksheets are featured in this edition that includes 25 percent new and updated material.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool to help you establish technique and direction.......2007-09-25

I have a friend that I was constantly asking cycling questions. He has been riding for 3 decades and said I'd like this book and that the information helped shape his technique and training. I read it and learned a ton. It helped me conceptualize ideas about training, ability, fitness, planning, peaking for races and nutrition.

4 out of 5 stars Good for serious training.......2007-08-23

I'm new to serious cycling and bought this book along with Bernard Hinault's Road Racing. the Hinault book though somewhat dated (1986) is better for a beginner as it discusses the fundamentals in a more accessible way. Friel's book is much bigger and targeted more towards a serious racer with charts on training regimen and so on. Even then, it is a book that a beginner would find useful as it covers a lot of the stuff that Hinault covers such as training zones, nutrition and so on.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent training resource.......2007-07-06

I have been reading this book over the last couple weeks and I have found it to be tremendously helpful. My cycling training used to be nothing more than a series of rides that I chose as I was rolling out of the driveway. This book provides the reader with knowledge and tools to create a more effective program that will help improve results. It is not really something you sit down and read straight through (although you could). It is more useful than that. It serves as a reference for constructing training programs and teaches you what data to record and how to understand it. This has already improved my training program and I'm sure it will pay long-term dividends.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-05-14

This is one of best training books out there, full of very interesting and informative information. I also have the Triathletes Training Bible.

3 out of 5 stars Good but a little disapointed.......2007-05-13

I had heard excellent reviews of Joe Friel's work and of this book specifically and overall I am disapointed with it. While Dr. Friel does offer good information there certainly were not any great new revelations found in the book. While I did pick up a few good pointers there was nothing that would completely change my training programe.

Book Description

The idea of participating in a triathlon may sound out of the realm of possibility for those without a typical jock-athlete’s honed build, intense focus, and competitive mindset. But now Slow Fat Triathlete opens the door to those who may not come quite so equipped. After years of obesity, poor health, and self-doubt, Jayne Williams took part in her first triathlon in 2002 to prove something to herself and became hooked on the rush of the race. Today she is a self-proclaimed “slow fat triathlete,” unafraid to overcome humiliation, laugh at her foibles, have fun, and accomplish impressive goals. Slow Fat Triathlete is a book for those who may be overweight, out of shape, undisciplined, or otherwise unprepared to enter a triathlon but are curious to try. Through personal stories, practical ideas and suggestions, and uproarious anecdotes, this book inspires, encourages, and proves that with a little training, almost everybody can have a great time and reap huge rewards from pursuing their tri dreams—and that everyone can become a participant and an athlete.

5 out of 5 stars Great, great, great first read for beginner tri-athlete .......2007-10-06

Great, great, great first read for beginner tri-athletes of all ages, shapes and sizes. I've already recommended this book to several of my friends. Jayne Williams is hilarious. She gives practical advice, but keeps you laughing from beginning to end. I plan to do my first triathlon in the Spring of '08, after reading this book, I now believe I can do it!

5 out of 5 stars motivating and fun read!.......2007-07-06

I'm not quite new to the athletic world... still, I found Slow Fat Triathlete impossible to put down. In a very unusual twist for books like these, it is wildly entertaining with its conversational style and humorous slant.
When you finish this, you'll feel like you can take on the world-- and certainly, the triathlon.

5 out of 5 stars Informative an a HOOT.......2007-06-01

This book is not for the seasoned trialthlete but offers an honest insight to those of us who love to compete but may never actually be competitive. A solid, honest beginning for someone looking to "Try a Tri".

5 out of 5 stars Great Great Great.......2007-05-27

This book is amazing! Very motivating, helpful advice, let's you know that triathletes are not perfect Greek Gods. I love all of her little anicdotes and race day diaries. I have never felt so capable of accomplishing something in my life. This book is real and down to earth. Lots of help about finding equipment that will suit you. I have always been a nervous cyclist. I am scared to death of those skinny-tired death traps they call road bikes. This book let me know that bikes of all sorts are welcome in triathlons, especially if you're in it to finish, not just in it to win it. Maybe one day I will get over my fear of road bikes, until then Mountain-bike hybrid it is.
Buy this Book!! It rocks. Especially for normal everyday women.

It's hard to argue with success; it's even tougher to emulate it. But if you want to train like a Tour de France winner, you couldn't do much better than learning the tricks of the trade from two-time champion (1999 and 2000) Lance Armstrong.

In The Lance Armstrong Performance Program: Seven Weeks to the Perfect Ride, Armstrong teams up with his coach, Chris Carmichael (whom the U.S. Olympic Committee named 1999's Coach of the Year), to offer the ultimate insider's guide to becoming a better rider, based on the regimen Carmichael has been fine-tuning for Armstrong since the early 1990s. Noting that athletes of all levels focus best when aiming for specific goals at the end of short windows, the authors describe the performance program as consisting of "three specialized weekly training programs that build on your current fitness level" followed by a week of "recovery riding between each program." They provide an easy-to-administer fitness-level self-test in the form of a three-mile time trial (beginner, intermediate, or advanced), and they then define the key operative terms that make up the bulk of the actual training, including Tempo, HighSpin, PowerIntervals, Sprints, and Training Zone. A brief section of workbook-style pages provides readers with a user-friendly outline for the entire seven weeks.

Here is week 3 for an intermediate rider:

Though clearly the focus, the performance program itself makes up less than a third of the book. Other subjects covered include cycling equipment, essential maintenance and repair, riding in bad weather, road hazards, mental toughness, and the pros' eating habits both on and off the bike, to name just a few. What the book is not is the story of Lance Armstrong's remarkable recovery from testicular cancer (see his autobiography, It's Not About the Bike, for that). Rather, Armstrong and Carmichael have produced a detail-packed training manual, sprinkled with photographs and tales of the racing life, for those who spend a large percentage of their time on two wheels--or dream of it. --Patrick Jennings

4 out of 5 stars Intro to Cycling Fitness.......2007-09-29

I recommend this book to any cyclists interested in racing or fitness. If you ride for fun, this book is probably the only fitness book you will need for cycling. If you are planning on racing, but you don't know much about cycling training, this is an excellent book to start with.
This book is divided into two parts.
The first part introduces the rider to cycling fitness, and how it is accomplished. This involves explaining your max heart rate, VO2 max, and lactate threshold. It also explains the basics of cycling fitness, such as building a base, increasing speed, and raising your lactate threshold.
The second part of the book gives three 30 week workout plans, building towards some sort of event or race. The three workout plans are aimed at beginners, intermediate bikers, and more advanced riders.
This book does not emphasize power meters, but it does recommend a heart rate monitor. It also rates workouts according to perceived effort.
This is a good book.

Good common sense development in this book. Too often these books come out and decide that the person they're talking to is in better shape than Armstrong or is about to get on a bike for the first time. It's good to see that she is aiming at giving good workouts with adequate recovery and a constantly growing workload.

Cyclists of any age, experience, skill, and talent level can reach their full potential as both athlete and individual by training their bodies and minds for athletic competition. Ultrafit coach Thomas Chapple shows how with this practical guide. Based on the idea that success depends on the extent to which cyclists build their foundation of aerobic fitness, or their "base," for the road ahead, the book explains step-by-step how to build a bigger aerobic engine, work up to higher volumes, and make significant improvements in strength, endurance, and speed.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book Builds on Friels Bible.......2007-03-17

This is a great book. Read Friels Bible for the big plan and then read this to help implement. Its for those who like detail. Well thought out and written.

5 out of 5 stars Cost effective book to achieve long term results.......2007-01-10

Don't buy this book if you're short sighted and want to get faster next month. Do buy this book if you're a student of the sport of cycling, and the associated physiology. Friel's Bible dedicates several chapters to offseason and base preparation, but Chapple builds on this and expands it to an entire book.

Sound, detailed and correct. This isn't a "cycling for dummies" type book where you open it to a given page, do some canned workout, and magically win your next Cat 4 race.

Start reading it after Thanksgiving, plan through the holidays, and execute.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Go elsewhere for your nutritional advice.......2007-07-22

As a doctor who specializes in nutrition, I bought this book in the hopes of having a good resource for my cycling patients. Unfortunately, this book is not evidence or research-based, and for the most part regurgitates tired, debunked dietary myths.

The problems are too numerous to enumerate here. But a couple of examples are the authors' recommendation of fast-food joints as a source of nutritious meals, and their argument that organic food sources be avoided because they lack the nutritional content of processed foods.

If you are looking for a source of sound sports/cycling nutrition advice, I highly recommend you look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars The Cyclist's Food Guide.......2007-03-31

The book is comprehensive, thorough and very readable. The information is applicable to every day activities - not strictly cycling. It's worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars You've got to get this book!.......2006-05-23

"The Cyclist's Food Guide" is alot easier to understand than our new food pyramid! I rode the MS Tour of Tanglewood Century last year and had a wonderful experience. True, this was not a timed event but I felt great before, during and after. Clark's knowledge helped me through that and I'm grateful.

4 out of 5 stars How to eat well to ride.......2005-10-10

"The Cyclist's Food Guide" presents sound nutrition advice, even for the recreational cyclist. In particular, I really appreciated the section on Eating for Cycling where my husband and I followed the guidance given about preparing for the Event Week. By maximising our muscle glycogen with appropriate nutrition and tapering our training program, we were able to enjoy thoroughly a century ride from Brisbane to the Gold Coast (Australia). So, if you are looking for a good nutrition text that targets cyclists from all walks of life then make sure you add "The Cyclist's Food Guide" to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, strong themes, rational advice.......2005-08-24

This book is a gem! The advice is completely practical, the themes are uniform and consistent, and the results speak for themselves. There isn't any miracle here, just excellent synthesis and communication of good information. No gimmicks. No tricks. And the fact that the themes are unified helps, because I found myself reading this sporadically, so the underlying unity helped a lot. I've done three centuries since getting this book. For two of them, I was able to stick with their advice. For the third, fate conspired against me, my nutritional plan evaporated, and I bonked. I'm convinced that I would have had a much better day if I'd been able to execute my nutritional plan on the bike. In addition, recovery has been faster, and I've trimmed a couple of pounds. Highly recommended if you're looking for fundamentally sound advice about how to make cycling work even better for you.

Neil Peart cycles his way through West Africa and brings us along with him, dysentery and all. The Masked Rider details his physical and spiritual journey, through photographs, journal entries, and tales of adventure. Peart's "masks" are the masks that we wear--culture, psychology, labels, expectations--and his book reveals how traveling in a very foreign land allows us to peer behind them.

Book Description

Dysentery, drunken soldiers, and corrupt officials provide the background for Neil Peart's physical and spiritual cycling journey through West Africa. The prolific drummer for the rock band Rush travels through African villages, both large and small, and relates his story through photographs, journal entries, and tales of adventure, while simultaneously addressing issues such as differences in culture, psychology, and labels. Literary and artistic sidekicks such as Aristotle, Dante, and Van Gogh join Peart and his cycling companions, reminding the reader that this is not just another travel book—it is a story of both external and introspective discovery and adventure.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great story about a great adventure.......2007-08-26

I am always interested in good real life adventures. This story is about Neil's perspective on his adventure through a remote part of Africa that most westerns would never have the courage to try. I am personally a person that has traveled most places of the world, including Africa, but exposing myself to the elements the way Neil and his other five cycling buddies did is something I wouldn't dream of doing..... or at least until I had read this book... which makes me now believe I have been missing an entire part of my traveling adventure.

Pick this book up! You will enjoy it! I enjoy Neil's honesty about his traveling companions and the people he interacts with during the trip. A great story about a great adventure.

5 out of 5 stars A Masked Reader rates The Masked Rider.......2007-08-10

My purpose in picking up this book was simple. I recently renewed my lifelong love affair of that wonderfully efficient and simlplistic machine, the bike, and wanted a book to get some info on a good bike to buy and techie tips/advice from a 'name I can trust' (given that I'd read a few of Neil Peart's books and enjoyed the music of the band he plays for.)

What I found was an unassuming gem. To give a brief background, I found some of Peart's other books (Ghost Rider & Roadshow) 'tough' reads. That is to say, they were informative, and certainly engrossing, but they chronicalled arduous times and tasks. Ghost Rider was painful at a similarly bad time for me and no matter how much I enjoyed being the reader and riding 'shotgun' the experience did not alleviate my own pain vicariously. At the risk of sounding like a self help guru, I think everyone has to experience and learn to heal in their own way. Or as Forrest Gump said, "that's all I have to say about that ..."

Roadshow is a tough read as a Rush fan. It is one of those delightfully entertaining books that i want to read in a single day, but with that reading comes the price of knowing the other side of the velvet rope, and a casualty of that knowledge is the innocence of a lifelong fan. It is also an education that makes a true fan of a casual one, and an appreciative one at that. Perhaps it is not so much an appreciation, as it is an acknowledgement of all of the 'other stuff' that comes along with the exhibition of an art form. Aw heck, lets forget acknowledgement, and call it an acceptance. Peart discloses his intimate feelings as a visceral reaction to the most unnatural act of shuttling from one locale to another while trying to discern the handful of extremist worshippers amid the seas of respectful fans. The breakneck pace of the tour made this a hard read as a fan, who if he had it his way would invite the guys to 'his' little corner of the world, show the guys around 'his' hometown, and make sure they had a homecooked meal and sit on the porch and listen to crickets. Yeah right .. that would make an exciting book entry - huh! It was funny to see Peart caught up in the coatails of the whirlwind of a tour and scurring from one national park to another as a diversionary quest on the tour - sometimes only stopping long enough to get an admission stamp at the ranger's office and high tail it out. I felt bad for the guy, really! But the journey's the thing here. So in that light it was tiring as a reader, but a good kind of tired. I feel for ya, buddy!

So much for a short background, but that's history for you. There's always more behind you than you think. Or at least I'd like to think there's more ahead than behind. But unlike this review, life is short so let me get to the point, eh?

As I said a lifetime ago, I picked up Masked Rider with the intent to hopefully glean some equipment, riding and otherwise technical tips from a respected writer and musician. Sort of like going to your plumber to get tips on your car or something, but to me its about people, I trusted Peart as a writer. As it turns out there was little if any of what I had hoped for in the book, but on the bright side there was a whole lot of 'other stuff' that I really liked. Which brings us to the here and now.
Where are we? Oh yeah...

I loved this book. The 'mask' is a metaphor that Peart used to describe the roles or facades that we use to find our comfort zones, hide behind or avoid conflict. Those masks obfuscate, inveigle and deceive and often the wearer is the bearer of those consequences. Like the old twilight zone episode, the people become the masks and vice versa.

This book is really interesting in that the setting is a country of what one perceives to be differing norms, beliefs, customs, languages, infrastructure, commerce and countless other nuances that can make or break one's illusion of a good day. Of course, humility, patience, endurance amid diareah, thirst, conflict & corruption make for a good read especially from the comfort of home.

The traditional use of tribal masks among African cultures is certainly well documented in the western world, but here we find 5 North American travelers on the other side of the world wearing their own masks.

The beauty of the country , the people - especially the kids or the people saying welcome, or the old timer taking a nap in the woods
made me feel like the world is my home. Africa was always my dream destination as a kid. I will remember these images.

This book was a handbook on group dynamics, human behaviour, cultural sensitivity, communication, tolerance and compassion among others. The really interesting thing is that I am talking about the interractions of five North Americans among themselves - not with Africans. Peart delves into what makes people tick (including himself) and it is thoroughly enjoyable. It is also informative and offers practical lessons going forward. (People are all nuts!) Having been there, I found myself laughing out loud when Peart was still pissed off at the others and unable to sleep after discovering basic fundamental differences in beliefs and rationales during a conversation with the group. Still we try ....

Peart seems to make the observation as he makes his journey that, people - can't live with them and can't live without em. As I like to say
"Your damned if you do and damned if you don't - I'll be damned."
In other words, I'd rather be damned without regrets so If I am really waivering on a decision I'll usually err on the side of the affirmative and learn if nothing else. I am glad I read this book. <-(gratuitous affirmation)...

Thank you.

PS. The book didn't have any gear tips, but it was good to read at night on the early days of getting back into riding (with sore legs). Lots of empathy. Now I ride whenever I get the chance and I remember that Peart described one of the best things about cycling is that is done at "people speed".

5 out of 5 stars A ride with Neil.......2007-06-12

What a rush! Ok...sorry for the pun. Mr. Peart surprised me with his eloquent writing style and description of his journey. I could almost taste the grit and feel every bump he encountered along the way. Mr. Peart was able to convey adroitly the incredible poverty these people in Cameroon live with on a daily basis. I liked his insight into the young people there when he said something to the effect of how they wanted things 'given' to them rather than to 'earn them'. His expereinces with local govenrment officials and soldiers were quite interesting. He seemed to handle it all with a good sense of humor and an appropriate amount of respect for the customs and values of the country he was a guest of. It is refreshing to read a book by a well known musician without them tooting their own horn regarding their profession or politics. Mr. Peart comes across as some one you could sit down and have a nice cold one with and never know what he did for a living.

4 out of 5 stars Honest and Lucid.......2007-03-24

I came upon Neil Peart's writing after watching a video my drummer had lent me ("A Work In Progress"). I had been so impressed with Neil's clarity, vision, and humility in the video, that I looked him up on the web to see what else I might find. On his web site I found some essays that he has written and was further impressed with his writing style. It was honest, open, intelligent, and conversational. I also noticed that he has written four books, three of them featuring bicycling or motorcycling. As a bicyclist, motorcyclist, musician, and writer myself, I had to dig in. I began with his first book, and was not disappointed.

I loved the style AND content of this book (not an everyday occurrence for me). Neil uses the writer's "show, don't tell" adage well, painting a picture of his bike tour that helps you to feel the heat, taste the dust, hear the blaring late-night music, and smell the sweat and sewage. In the midst of this, he relates his observations and thoughts clearly and honestly -- he doesn't sugar-coat his prose, rather he reveals what he experiences in all its warted glory.

There are two things I might change with this book to make it near-perfect: 1. More photos. There is much discussion in the book of the perils of photo-taking in Cameroon, and the fact that Neil was willing to take risks for the sake of some of these photos adds a sort of value to them for the reader. 2. I felt the book ended abruptly. I would love to have had more of a summary of his thoughts after the ride, a sort of Campbellian return of the hero and teaching of the lessons learned.

Perhaps a good implicit summary of my opinion on the book is the fact that I am already reading his next book, plan to read his others, and hope that he keeps on writing.

5 out of 5 stars Worth a second read.......2006-08-07

I first read The Masked Rider on the plane that took me to South Korea, where I was going to live, working as a university professor. Neil's book warned me about Eastern-style toilets, locals staring, and children shouting -- though instead of "white man" it was "American".

Now, after re-reading it 8 years later, I find that The Masked Rider is just as fun the second time around. Neil is starkly honest in his observations -- about his fellow riders, his experience with the locals (and their prejudices and politics), and himself. His descriptions wander from day-to-day grind to vivid scenic descriptions that create a picture in the mind's eye. His style is conversational, and his "voice" as a writer comes through loud and clear.

I highly recommend this book to those who have wandered the world and enjoy getting another's take on travels, or those who are interested in taking a glimpse into West Africa... seasoned with philosophical musings of the Professor.

5 out of 5 stars Different than the Rest.......2007-09-23

This book is so much better than other diet books! I think this is because the author gears it towards helping the reader/dieter understand the real reasons behind why we gain weight and lose energy as we get older. As a middle-aged woman, I immediately saw the sense in everything Dr. Malkov explained, and have begun to implement it. Also, he is a very clear writer: in a very few pages he explains the reasons why I'm always gaining back the weight I work so hard to lose. He also does a great job of explaining the connections between refined carbs and weight gain. He gives information I haven't read anywhere before about how the muscles are affected by Atkins' style diets, and why the carb cycle method is more friendly to the body, and will not age the body like the low-carb diets do. I really recommend this book to anyone who is trying to diet and stay healthy at the same time. It's a great source of knowledge and motivation to live a more healthy lifestyle, and it gives a lot of practical advice about how to stay healthy, once you reach your goals. I'm extremely glad I read it and recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Easy reading and practical.......2007-08-15

In this book Dr. Malkov explain us in an easy way what we should do to have a healthier life by the process called "carb cycling diet". He explains it based in two principles: the anabolism, the process by which your body builds mascle, and catabolism, the process of burning fat. Different foods function for different purposes in your body, and controlling the food intake with knowledge of these two principles makes it easier for everyone who wishes to lose weith without giving up their favorite foods. He also gives many recipes for foods and easy hints for doing exercises even when you're completely out of time to do so. I recommend this book to everyone who would like to lose weigth and have a healthier life exploiting the foods in the best way.

5 out of 5 stars Suddenly, it all makes sense!.......2006-08-31

I bought this book a few months ago and it has been a tremendous help. I really do have more energy (no more 3pm caffeine/sugar cravings!) and look and feel better. Finally, I have learned the best way to consume carbs. Over the summer I have gained new, lean muscle and dropped fat. Everyone says I look great - people have really noticed. I also found the program very easy to follow and simple to understand. I read another user review that said it was complicated. It's not. Even my mother (who has never followed a diet in her life!) has been able to figure it out and she is also looking and feeling much better. It's perfect for people who are new to dieting (like my mom!)or just need to get better results after years of dieting and exercising (like me!)Great Book!

5 out of 5 stars Great diet!!.......2006-04-06

This diet is an amazing blend of science and practical advice. I lost fat in areas where it was hanging all my life. None of the diets I tried before were able to do this for me. I tried WW, Atkins, South Beach, Body for Life but fat on my thighs never went away until I started this diet. And the amazing part is that I am eating sweets( I have a big sweet tooth!). The recipes with whey protein are quite interesting. They don't taste great but they are okay for carb restricted days. I do not feel hungry for a long time after eating them. I feel healthier and happier with my body. This diet is my light at the end of the tunnel. Many Thanks to Dr. Malkov !!!!

1 out of 5 stars Incomprehensible.......2006-02-05

This progam is so complicated it is nearly impossible to understand. The author is a physician and exercise physiologist, and the book is written in technical lingo, making it extremely difficult to understand. The instructions frequently seem incomplete. For example, there are some good sounding recipes in Chapter 6, in which the author notes that he has included more Level C recipes than Level A recipes since they can be eaten during any phase of the diet. However nowhere on the recipe pages is it noted which recipes belong to which phase, and the reader is left to look over the carb content of the recipes and try to decipher which level they apply to.

Calling for six small meals a day, as well as keeping track of calorie consumption, you will need to devote large amounts of time spent in the kitchen cooking and packing the food you will need to carry with you so you can eat something every couple hours to maintain steady blood glucose levels. This is another one of those diet books with menu plans that call for things like "a slice of pizza", that always make me wonder what the dieter is meant to do with the rest of the pizza?

In my opinion, this book could have benefitted from more mindful editing. The information presented in it is potentially useful for a good many individuals, if only we could understand it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Better than "Lance Armstrong Performance Program".......2007-01-04

Chris Carmichael did a better job in this book than "Lance Armstrong Performance Program". I think that "The Ultimate Ride" has more details, and does not use the "maximum heart rate" padron of training, but "lactate threshold", as found in Joe Friel's "The Cyclist Training Bible".
However, its much easier to create an anual program with "The Cyclist Training Bible", since the "The Ultimate Ride" is a little bit haphazard in this issue.
The best book of bike training still is "The Cyclist Training Bible"; "The Ultimate Ride" is the second best.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2006-07-13

Chris Carmichael has shared the knowledge he gained through his life of coaching great cyclists. His presentation makes the whole training process smarter and easier to move on. The build up and all the necessary work is all right there and there are even alternatives.

As a person who studies and writes about motivation and discipline, I found this book a strong influence. Even on the very hard rides, knowing that it works and it works because... makes the whole thing really go smooth.

Thanks Chris, keep them coming.

5 out of 5 stars Great book if you want to be Stronger and Faster on the bike.......2006-03-07

Some people have said this book is too general but if you read it and re-read the relevant sections about your workout focus it's pretty clear what you need to do. Not only does he give a sample workout routine for all of the different training periods but he explains why they're designed the way they are, so you can make your workout YOURS.

Pros:
1) Very clear explanation of each workout and its benefits
2) Emphasis is put on the diet and a reasonably good explanation about eating toward a good recovery.
3) The sample plans are based on 5 or 6 day per week workout regiments so there's some flexibility when it comes to the real work cyclist trying to fit it in his/her weekly schedule.
3) Carmichael is good motivational writer

Cons:
1) Carmichael says "recent studies" a lot but never actually references them. It raises a question on how valid the studies really are.
2) Carmichael emphasizes power as a means of measuring effort. He gives heart rate criteria as well, but he flat out states that power is a better measure of performance. This means you either need an expensive power tap or a trainer with the power data at a given speed or range of speeds.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to learn how to train and ride faster.......2006-02-21

This is a great book for someone looking to improve their performance on a bike. It's different from other cycling training books in that it really shows you how you can get better, not only through workouts, but also through improving the way you ride. I really liked the parts about ways to save energy in pacelines and when climbing hills, what to eat and drink and when, and how to set up your bike so it fits and is comfortable. It's refreshing to see someone who's interested in teaching people how to train, as well as how training works together with nutrition and hydration, recovery and mental preparation to get "100% Ready". I have book shelves full of cycling training books, including Friel's and Juekendroop's, and Burke's, yet I really feel like Carmichael's offers a fresh perspective on training and preparation in cycling. It's easy to read, and speaks to me as a guy who's really into cycling and wants to get better, but isn't going to race the Tour de France anytime soon.

3 out of 5 stars Good but Friel is MUCH better.......2005-10-17

I wish that I had read D. Snell's review before buying. After reading The Ultimate Ride, I learned about the The Cyclist's Training Bible by Joe Friel from my local bike club. I agree wholeheartedly with D. Snell's comments. The Ultimate Ride is good, but it is Friel-Lite and lacks a lot of details found in Friel that are helpful in putting together your own periodization training plan.

5 out of 5 stars A Serious Book for Serious Athletes-No Kidding.......2007-04-29

This is the first book a serious athlete should read on endurance and multisport training. It provides a great foundation for everything you will need to know to develop your own effective training program. The writing team of Sleamaker and Browning work well together. Sleamaker gives you the theory and the facts, and Browning puts them into practice.

4 out of 5 stars Okay read.......2007-04-21

It has a lot of good ideas on how to create a training schedule. This isn't the main book I use but I do revert to some of the ideas on occasion.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful .......2005-11-18

I use this book in order to build my training schedule and I enjoy any minute. The book explains the different components of the periodic training method and presents a practical way to develope a yearly log for different types of endurance events (road races up to the marathon distance, triathlons and duathlons up to ironman/ powerman distances, cross-country race, cross-country skiing). I use this books for over a year now, and I find it very helpul.

The fifth star is missing because I find that the books is lacking a more comprehansive view for the periodization within the training week.

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2003-06-25

This is a good book for people who have never done a sport at a high level, because it will show you how to do a good training and give you ideas for exercises, it is also for people who plan to do some sport for a special event (for example, training for a 1 week or more mountain hiking)

I would not really recommend this book to people who already do high level taining and who allready are in a training program, because they probably allready know most of the exercises and ideas of this book (or at least something equivalent)

4 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for a successful training program.......2003-06-13

I bought this book on the recommendations of Amazon customers and I must admit that I wasn't disapointed. Sometimes you don't know what you're going to get when everyone gives a book 5 stars. Sometimes it's hard to get an unbiased review.
I was pleased with the book and what others have said is true. I recommend this book to endurance athletes looking for reasons and explanations on why to train a certain way and what it will do for your body in the long run.
However, I am a competetive rower and there were few topics that took rowing into account. Most of the training is geared towards running/cycling/triathetes and not specific to rowing as much as I was hoping. Also, there is way too little emphasis on resistance training. Most of the book is about setting up a mathmatical training plan and says to devote time sparingly to strength training. I'm not an expert on other sports, but I do know that power through strength training is vital for a strong pull on those oars. I suggest devoting more time in the SERIOUS formula to weight training in the gym than the book suggests, especially in the early training weeks.

As for the rest of the book, it's great, but it takes a *LOT* of paperwork. Fortunately my wife is handy with MS Excel and plotted all the charts for me with forulas that makes it all easy. However, without her I know that I would be daunted and discouraged at the task of making all the charts and calculations by hand. In a future updated edition (I hope that they make one) the book should come with a CDROM loaded with all the charts and formulas, or at least a web site link for downloading them. In the 21st century it's good practice to have online content and I hope to see it with this great text book.
