5 out of 5 stars Take the trip!.......2007-09-22

Everything you would like to know about Route 66. This book and it's author served as the main source of infromation & inspiration for the Disney/Pixar classic animated movie "Cars". A must have for the motoring history buff.

5 out of 5 stars Route 66.......2007-08-09

As we get older we appreciate memories from our youth more and more. I can remember riding in my parents car on trips along Route 66. This book is full of memories and interesting information about this historic road. We plan to take the Lincoln Highway from California to New York and come home on Route 66. We bought this book as our travel guide home and plan to visit many of the places listed in its pages. We also bought The Lincoln Highway: Coast to Coast for our guide book east. Both books are a must for the adventure we are planning; a cross country trip in our 1941 Oldsmobile street rod.

My Ex & I traveled on 66 in the mid to late 80's. Met a lot of the Roadies, took a ton of 66 Pix(mostly ruins at the time). Went
"from Chicago to L.A." 2 full times & actually MET Michael & Suz when we were in OK. In fact, we are on page 41 of the Original book! We began a trend as, when we stopped at a 66 biz, we had the owners autograph the book! We LOVE Ramona/Angel/Bob Waldmire & are sad at the loss of Jerry Richard, Juan D. Bobby T. & other lost legends. It was a fun time in my life & I have many great memories & Road Stories.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent front to back historical coverage of Rt. 66........2007-03-12

This is a great book for just kicking back and taking a virtual ride on Rt. 66. I, myself, have never been down the road as I am an East Coaster and never yet made the western trek to California. However, I always dreamed of doing such in a RV and now I know for sure what road to take.

While I have heard of Rt. 66 before, I (never prior to reading this book) knew much about the road. What got me started on Rt. 66. was the fairly recent Disney movie "Cars" (of which I highly recommend seeing). The movie touched upon what Rt. 66 means to America and it's past and also the effects of the Interstate system and I-40 on Rt. 66.

The author of the book, Michael Wallis, has a cameo in "Cars" as the voice of the police car. So it was quite obvious to me that if Mr. Wallis' knowledge is good enough for Disney...Well, this made my decision very clear on what Rt. 66 book to purchase.

Wallis's knowledge of the road is fantastic and expansive. He takes you from the road's beginnings both literally and historically. You go through each state and further to each town along the route, explaining in detail how the roads beginnings were to how they are today. After reaching California, Wallis then has a dedicated chapter on how a recent movement is presently undergoing to restore Rt. 66. highlighting those business's that remain and new and old attractions to visit.

As other reviews pointed out, this book does create a very vivid image in one's mind that does allow you to virtually go down Rt. 66. It is a great 'primer' for those who want to brush up on thier Rt.66 history and also gives you a good idea of places to visit once you plan a trip on the historic road.

Created in sections by state, you can either choose to go through the book front to back as I have or choose to reach each state in more detail. Everything is here.

The only gripe I would have with the book is that while it is an excellent historical document on Rt. 66, I was hoping that key places would be easier to find and laid out more like a reference book. This way I could easily look up attractions in each state and see how they were and how they are now. I am assuming I would get this wish by buying Russ Olsen's "Route 66: Then and Now" book.

As for traveling, I know I would want a quick reference. If you are traveling Route 66, using this book as a reference will have you fumbling through pages. So this book is best read BEFORE one takes on the trip. For the road trip itself I was recommended "Route 66 Adventure Handbook" by Drew Knowles and also the "EZ66 guide for travlers" by Jerry McClanahan. (I have still yet to read these). From what I gathered by other reviewers these two books supplemented with Wallis's book would give anyone everything they would need to know about Rt. 66.

So bottom line, for overall history and just about everything you need to know about Rt 66. while taking a virtual tour of the road, well, this is it. This is where this book shines. A fantastic book best read from cover to cover.

However for a quick reference to take on an actual Rt. 66 road trip, that is where this book falls short. There are probably better sources for that task.

Overall a great buy for the price and it would make a great addition to anyone's American history library and it would also make a great coffee table book (especially if they made a hardcover edition).

Book Description

On a hot summer day in 1932, Andy Connors, who owns a garage that serves Route 66, finds himself in major trouble: He's been bitten by a rabid skunk. Fortunately, Yates, a man whose life Andy had once saved, is stopping by for gas and immediately takes control of the situation. After driving Andy to Oklahoma City for treatments, he returns to manage the garage while Andy recovers. Yates is also there to help Andy's two daughters and Leona, the woman who tends them-and who is the town scandal because she's not married to Andy. Drawn to this tough and tender woman, Yates is soon defending her against the local residents and her brother, who's intent on punishing Leona for disgracing him. Caught in the turmoil of gossip and threats, Yates and Leona will find their love tested at every turn-especially when her brother is murdered.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not a keeper........2004-11-02

Garlock writes incredibly engaging books and has the ability to bring to life multiple characters (10-20), which is usually not as well done by most authors. Her villains are always evil and an amazingly accurate portrayal of how you would imagine people like that would behave. It also always amazes me that I read with interest just plain old daily chores and happenings. I do have to say that this story is not one of my favorites by her only because of the relationship development between the two main characters. It reads like an adolescent attraction. "He called me honey, does he mean it? Oh of coarse not, stop dreaming..." yada, yada, yada till the last chapter where they finally get together. I prefer it when the leading character's relationship develops more quickly, maybe get together toward the middle and allow us to see how well they get on together. Then work together to "defeat the villains." With this story everything progresses so slowly, it's still very interesting, but it's mostly daily chores, small exchanges between the characters, interesting moments with the route 66 travelers here and there, and of coarse the confrontations with her "Holy roller" brother. If you've got the extra time this is a very well written, engaging novel, but not something that I'm glad that I spent my time on with so many other treasure's that await on my book shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Depression revisited.......2004-10-19

I was too young to understand the Depression and its cause, but this book was a very good reenactment of how it might have been and how the poor put up with life. It was an innocent time too because most of the people helped each other even tho they had nothing themselves. The year is 1932. The story simple and interesting. The romance was sweet. Nothing hot, just a nice book with a real bad guy thrown in for everyone to hate. This was my first Dorothy Garlock read and I just might look for others.

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Tribute to Those Who Lived During the Depression.......2003-08-09

"I still don't know why you're doing this, Yates."
"It's payback time, Andy."

These quotes from MOTHER ROAD, which appear near the end of the first chapter, sum up the motivation behind future action taken by its protagonist, known simply as Yates. Much of Dorothy Garlock's book deals with question marks about his past. But Yates admits his reason for staying in Sayre, Oklahoma during the depression era: to help Andy Connors's family. Andy has been bitten by a rabid skunk and must undergo treatment in Oklahoma City for four to six weeks.

Leona Dawson, Andy's sister-in-law, cares for his two young daughters after the death of their mother, her sister. She refuses to marry Andy to stop tongues wagging in the rural community. There is mutual "like" between the two but not the type of love found in a marriage. Leona comes with baggage from her past in the form of an extreme fundamentalist Christian brother, Virgil. He is the epitome of an evil antagonist and depends on Sheriff's Deputy Wayne Ham to back him up in his quest to remove the two little girls from Leona's care at Andy's.

Andy's garage and gas station is the center of action in MOTHER ROAD. Its location is on the famous Route 66 central highway across the southwest to California. Garlock gives an accurate picture of life in the dustbowl days of Oklahoma. She imparts a sense of danger when evildoers work to shatter peace and quiet in a small town, changing when the new highway segment opens. Bootleggers and highwaymen threaten serenity, but MOTHER ROAD's most serious trouble comes from town and family bigotry.

Leona and Yates begin their acquaintance with misconceptions. To him, she is a plain girl, brimming with spit and vinegar. She's tough when confronted and gentle with Andy's girls. For her, Yates is a mysterious stranger who has invaded their lives and is her object of contention. Much of her fear is rooted in her distrust. Garlock uses a volume of words to illustrate Leona's feelings. At times, the fear factor and insecurity overshadow the romance.

Virgil's self-righteous personality looms as a constant threat to the family. His own wife and children are objects of his brutality. When diphtheria strikes his son, Virgil sees it as God's will. A subplot unfolds when his anger affects the entire community. Yates comes to terms with denials stemming from his background before the story's end. Major characters confront their demons and accept changes in their lives.

MOTHER ROAD is a colorful personalization of a highway and the people who work and play along its byways. Garlock captures the work ethic and spirit of Americans during the Depression years with understanding. MOTHER ROAD is a novel of tribute to the common men and women of that era.

I love all of Dorothy Garlock's books and I enjoyed this one also but I felt something was left out especially at the end. I will be waiting for the next book.

4 out of 5 stars exciting historical novel.......2003-06-16

In 1932 at Andy's garage near Sayre, Oklahoma on Route 66, a rabid skunk bites station owner Andy Connors. Yates, a person visiting the area, kills the animal, burns it, and buries the ashes. Next he takes Andy to the nearest hospital in Oklahoma City where the injured person will reside for six weeks receiving shots. Andy pleads with Yates to watch over his beloved Leona and his two preadolescent children. Yates explains to Andy that he owes him for saving his life when he was a youngster and will gladly do so.

Leona and the children worry about Andy and are uncomfortable with Yates staying with them. He feels he can handle anything except his attraction to Leona, who he believes, is Andy's wife. When he finds out she is not, but looked upon as a woman living in scandal, he defends her to the townsfolk who ostracized her. As Andy heals, Yates and Leona fall in love and he knows she is too good a person to be anyone's kept woman.

This tale is an exciting historical novel that fans of the Depression era stories like The Grapes of Wrath will want to read. The characters including passersby bring to life living or traveling in the 1930s on the MOTHER ROAD as Route 66 was called. The romance adds depth to the period enabling the audience to gain insight into the morality of the townsfolk. Though a murder mystery adds suspense and is used as an impetus to the romance, the story line is at its strongest when Dorothy Garlock opens a panoramic view of a bygone America.

1 out of 5 stars Minimal information.......2006-01-11

This map is disappointing. It's a great idea to have it laminated and the size you can stow in a glove compartment, but it is sorely lacking in information. While the illustrations are enjoyable, I keep looking at all the space that could have held more information. Even though I could easily pack this map, it's staying home when I travel down route 66.

3 out of 5 stars Route 66.......2005-08-10

The map is OK. I thought coming from the AAA that the road map would be more precise showing realignments etc. If you're looking for good places to eat or tourist traps or places of interest this map is adequate.

5 out of 5 stars A great companion for an essentail piece of Americana.......2002-05-10

First off - this is not a calendar. It's a laminated, folding map guide. Very compact and great for travel. My girlfriend and I took to the open road last year for the 75th anniversary and having this as our "tour guide" made for an incredible trip. The map is broken into six sections, one for each geographical region of the route. It showcases lesser-known haunts and pieces of popular culture you just wont want to pass up. And with AAA producing it, you know its accurate and informative.

    Book Description

Next year will mark the 75th anniversary of America's most legendary highway, Route 66. This 2,400-mile stretch of interstate runs across eight states and straight through the American psyche. John Steinbeck, Woody Guthrie, and carloads of nuclear families from the 1920s to the 1960s threaded their way through the heartland, and the unique restaurants that blossomed along Route 66 are justly celebrated. There are other successful road guides, but Marian Clark's The Route 66 Cookbook is the only culinary guide to what Steinbeck dubbed "The Mother Road." It includes over 250 delicious, time-tested recipes from places like the U Drop Inn, the Covered Wagon Trading Post, the Pig Hip, and the Bungalow Inn. It is also a nostalgic recreation of the Route 66 of the past, with stories from the waitresses and cooks who poured the coffee and baked the pie. With 105 b&w illustrations--as well as a new 16-page color section--this is a gem of Americana, and a treasury of comforting dishes from a time when the flavors along the road changed as dramatically as the landscape and accents as you sped across the heartland.

Where else can you learn how they made those cinnamon rolls, chicken-fried steak, greasy hamburgers, chili and chocolate pie? This book is history! And there real jewels, too -- roast duck, chicken and shrimp curry -- that are delicious and easy. This is a useful, real cookbook full of wonderful road stories. A wonderful book!

The book has a great new introduction with additional stories and recipes. Makes for memorable reading about cafes, diners and other eateries that were once on the road and others that are on 66 today. Recipes work!

5 out of 5 stars A great trip down memory lane with all the trimmings.......2001-11-27

I originally bought the first edition of this fantastic book and had to buy the deluxe update as well. This book is truly fantastic. I spent a good part of last summer driving from Los Angeles to Missouri on old route 66 and this book was a welcome friend along the way (how many people plan trips with cookbooks in hand, I have no idea).

From the standpoint of the trip it was great to be able to find some of the same restaurants that my parents ate at 30+ years ago. The book is also full of menus, pictures and stories - and it's the stories that set the book apart. The stories about the restaurants and people along the way made the entire trip seem like visiting old friends.

The recipes are also second to none. I've tried over two dozen of the recipes and none have disapointed me so far. All of them are simple, tasty and relatively simple to make. You can't go wrong by using these recipes.

Finally, I love the changes from Chicago to Los Angeles in terms of the regional recipes offered. I've long been a fan of American regional cooking and this book, while not a "regional cookbook", shows a flair for the subtle changes in restaurant fare as you travel the mother road.

5 out of 5 stars The Route 66 Cookbook, Anniversary Edition.......2001-03-13

Every Route 66 traveler has memories - this book delighted me with stories of places I have stopped, dishes from the 50s, and great memories from waitresses, owners, customers, and home-town folks who talked about Route 66 eateries that are gone as well as food stops still open today. The recipes are reminiscent of the 50s although some come from the whole 66 era. Every time I drive the road there are changes. The author points this out and some of the people she interviewed are now deceased - but I'm glad their memories were saved - bet they were glad to reminisce. I found the book a delight! Glad Clark is a fellow Oklahoman.

    3 out of 5 stars To me, a disappointment........2001-01-03

I began this book reading it as though it were a novel--devouring every word. I have driven Route 66 some, have several books about it, and enjoy the lore and history. And I love reading about food of all kinds, as well as cooking. Marian Clark has certainly done a lot of research and included many interesting anecdotes, but I sometimes had the impression that some could have been fleshed out a little more, to advantage. A number of interesting-sounding people and places got only a sentence or two. By the half-way mark in the book, I was convinced that travelers had better be prepared to subsist on chili, pie, salad dressings, and barbecue sauces, if this is a representative cross section of what's available along the Mother Road. Recipes for these seem to make up close to half of the offerings. And by then I was merely scanning the pages.

Michael Wallis's introduction is touching and lyrically written, and a sheer pleasure to read. I'd like to have seen recipes for more of the gustatory delights that he recalls so vividly, but alas, nary an omelette, nor a single biscuit and gravy. 'WAY more than enough gooey desserts for the overweight, glucose-intolerant traveler, though.

The color photos that fill sixteen pages of this Deluxe 75th Anniversary Edition seem to be only of snapshot quality, pretty amateurish, and in my opinion the book deserves better. Some are obviously reproductions of old photos, and can't be helped. The others, though...

So, am I sorry I bought this book? Am I glad to have it in my library? No, and yes. But I'm still disappointed. There are better books on Route 66 out there, and better books on comfort food, though perhaps none that present the two together as this one does. But I have a feeling I'll be referring to those other works more often in the future than I do this one.

4 out of 5 stars Good romance set during the Depression.......2005-05-10

For some time now I have seen Dorothy Garlock's romance books with pretty covers of American scenes at the library and bookstores. But for some reason I didn't pick any of them up until I recently saw the audiotape. While I began by listening to the audio, I did finish by reading over half the book and enjoyed both experiences.

Route 66 is a rather new highway which winds around the country and the year is 1935. The United States is gripped by the Depression and thousands from Oklahoma and other cities effected by the Dust Bowl are on the road seeking a better life in California. But for one woman pregnant and a widow, Route 66 takes her back to her home near Santa Fe, New Mexico and the motor court her father owned. Now Mary Lee's father is gone and her mother an alcoholic has allowed gentlemen callers to rent cabins and takes the rent money and buys liquor instead of fixing up the cabins. But Mary Lee realizes this may be the only way she can earn some money and take care of her child who will be born in a few months. Complicating her life are her mothers friends and her deceased husband's father who wants to raise the child.

Although this was a rather predictable romance, it did intrigue me and while the ending was obvious it was a good journey till I reached the last page. Dorothy Garlock is well known for writing Americana romances and slices of American life, primarily during the 30's and 40's. This was a good read with endearing characters and I do look forward to reading more books by her in the future.

Dorothy knows how to keep a reader on her seat. I have read all of her books and I love how she sets the people, plots and era's. She makes you feel like you are there in the time. I love how she brings in people from her other books into the current book. It is good to know what happend to them. The ending of this book was a real surprise. It sure made everything that happend to Jake make since. My only regret is that the 3 books ended. I hope they will start to put Dorothy's books on CD's/MP's so we can listen over and over. I can not wait for the next series.

5 out of 5 stars Ms. Garlock Does It Again!.......2004-07-18

I have been an advid fan of Dorothy Garlock for years, and she never fails to take me back to a time when people come together as a community bringing out the best in almost everyone. There are those shady characters that brings us into the reality of yesterday and today, but they never overshadow the love her heroine and hero have for one another.

Song of the Road brings together Mary Lee Clawson, a pregnant widow, and Jake Ramero, a wrongly accused ex-convict. and a host of other lovable and shady characters to bring you a story of a love that was unknowingly started years ago.

I know once you read this book, you will have no choice than to seek out more of Ms. Garlock's books. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars A good book.......2004-06-07

It has been years since I read romance fiction. I came across Dorothy Garlocks 3 novels that take place along route 66in the depression era. I think they are wonderful books. I just finished the 3rd one"Song of the Road" and could hardly put it down. Now I am buying more of Ms.Garlocks books and hope they are all as good as this one.

5 out of 5 stars poignant angst laden romance.......2004-05-26

In 1935, two months after her husband's death, a poor pregnant Mary Lee Clawson rides the bus on Route 66 to Cross Roads, New Mexico where her late father owned the Cross Roads Motor Court. When she finally arrives at the motor court she sees her alcoholic mother having a jolly good time with people that are mooching off her. Mary Lee is delighted to discover that her father left her the business with the provision that she looks after her mother.

Two cabins are rented to people she would like to get rid of especially Frank Pierce who her mother says paid her for one year's rent; Mary Lee has no way to disprove it. The other long term renter is Jake Romero, an ex-con who was in prison for two years for cattle rustling. He came back to town to clear his name. He falls in love with her but he doesn't think she could ever love an ex-con. She loves Jake but doesn't think he would ever want to father another man's child. A dire situation makes them realize what is in the other's heart.

SONG OF THE ROAD is a poignant angst laden romance. Hearts will go out to the heroine who has to worry about operating the business, paying off the mortgage, caring for her mother and worrying if her father-in-law will try to take custody of her unborn. Someone wants Jake and Mary Lee dead so they can gain the property, but though danger lurks this lead couple has doubts about the desires of their beloved other. Dorothy Garlock has written a memorable and serious book that will grab and keep reader interested.

5 out of 5 stars A visual celebration of the 'mother road' and its momentos.......2004-08-11

Route 66 is one of the most famous American thoroughfares in American history, receiving mention in books, articles, and affectionate reflection across the country, but none are as visually pleasing as Bob Moore's Route 66, a visual celebration of the 'mother road' and its momentos. Color photos trace the route, its colorful roadside attractions and ads, and impart past and present culture.

        Book Description

It started in the heartland and originally ended in Los Angeles (not, contrary to myth, at the ocean). It carried truckers crossing the country, Okies fleeing the Dust Bowl, vacationers seeking the sun. It was America’s Main Street, the Mother Road, the Will Rogers Highway, and, at its dangerous curves, Bloody 66. Get your kicks on Route 66 with this wonderfully illustrated tribute to the best-loved highway in this car-loving nation. Michael Witzel shares his expertise and wealth of personal, archive, collector, and contributing photographer images in these pages, offering a nostalgic tour of the charms and oddities of this road through American cultural history.

Starting in Chicago and running to Santa Monica, this book highlights the sights along the highway with historic and current photos in then-and-now pairings, and includes Route 66 postcards, road signs, trinkets, maps, brochures, and advertisements. Here we see Route 66 as it was in its heyday and as it is now, the neon glamour of yesterday versus the ghost towns of today. Witzel and his wife, Gyvel Young-Witzel, recount the highway’s history, its role in popular culture, and its demise, as well as the individual stories of famous sights. Several profiles of those with close ties to the Mother Road, including the woman who played Ruthie Joad in the The Grapes of Wrath film, are included.
