Pretty detailed book for planning a trip.......2007-05-13
I found this book very usefull planning my trip in San Francisco with it's suburbs, valleys and antional parks, Las Vegas and Grand Canyon national park. I found everything I needed: places to see, hotels, links on internet.

I bought the Let's Go Mexico last December and I really liked it. It contains a lot of tips, especially for backpackers. In Mexico everyone had a Loneley Planet, so I thought it must be really good. Despite my good experience with Let's Go, I bought the Lonely Planet for my trips in the USA. And I am really disappointed. The most useful things are the maps which are not the best. It doesn't contain any special tips. The description of the sights is very minimal and doesn't give much insights. On the other hand Let's Go gave me a really good introduction to Mexico, the culture and the people.
Maybe I buy the Let's Go just to compare them, would be interesting.

If you are going to travel to/across USA Lonely Planet USA is a suitable and practical guide, in spite of its size. The suggestions about hotels, restaurants, sightseeing, sports and routes include both traditional touristic places and alternatives points too. The "author's choices" are great and help you a lot to choose the best options for small budgets. It works as a trustful friend telling you about the best things to do in your next travel. More maps showing cities and roads would be very useful in the next editions.

The best USA Guide Book ever!.......2006-07-25
I'm surprised to read all the bad reviews the Lonely Planet US guide book gets at Amazon. My only explanation (after reading, using and enjoying this guide book for the last 2 years) is the tremendous lack of sense of humour americans have about themselves! The Book is FULL of valuable information the conscientious, adventureous traveller wishing to explore, experiment, and know, will certainly appreciate! Lonely Planet provides valuable tips for off the track interesting places, museums, restaurants, cafes, neigborhoods, as well as an infinite number of interesting anecdotes about the places their culture and history. Nationalistic americans who don't seem to find a single flaw in their behaviour will find it tedious or even hurtful, but I'm sure many americans can take a good laugh about themselves and appreciate the humour but specially the tips and fun this book provides. Lonely Planet can be blunt saying things, and every single of their guide books is this way, no matter if the country is European, South American, African, etc! Europeans are more used to laughing at their own idiosyncracies than americans are, and there lies the big difference of how you will take the book. Simply, enjoy it while you can; there is no better travelling guide book than lonely planet, guaranteed! Highly recommended!

We bought this book as a resource for a cross country trip. I browsed this book before purchasing, and the maps and national park info really sold me. I even looked up my area ( which is a tourist beach town ) to see what they had to say. I was not impressed, but I chalked that up to the fact that we live in a remote tourist area.
I have several major issues with this book, which are explained in the introduction ( If only I had read it before I bothered to pack this worthless book ).
The writers have not traveled to all of the towns, cities or regions in the book. You will find some actual travel advice for places they have visited. But even that is worthless, since they point you towards "trendy" spots that have long past gone out of favor.
The reference information is so dated that it is worthless. Prices and basic information is incorrect, and I have the revised edition. I would make advanced reservations based on advice in this book. Odds are they have never seen the place or even been to the town. ( they mention this fact in the introduction, I should have started at page one.).
The book lacks practical travel tips you really need in some regions of the US.

Don't be a lonely backpacker skip this book and talk to other backpackers instead as you travel. You will get much better and more accurate information from people who have just been there....
This book doesn't include everything it should and has been drastically thickened with a lot of [info] backpackers don't need to know and more importantly do not want to carry the weight of those pages around.
Who cares about restaurants, hotels and other places backpackers are unlikely to go. More supermarket listings would be more helpful and pointing out when what is listed is a 7 Eleven, Spar, Quix type place and not actually a supermarket would also be good as these places aren't budget friendly.
The information on the actual towns, cities and national parks listed is ever increasing which is good but the number of places is fast declining especially the limited Canadian ones it has (a lot more pages used to be devoted to Canada).
If it's just background information you want to plan your trip you may be better off getting a version from a few year ago. ..For an overview of the USA and Canada this should concentrate on having as many places as possible not just the main ones. The whole differentiation of backpackers from tourists is that we see places package tours don't go. Who is going to carry around 50 or so Lonely Planet books and for the money spent on the books you will spend more than your entire trip.
While this book is good to find the location of hostels that's about it. Prices of course go up the day after the book is published. ...you're better off to go by word of mouth from other backpackers to find quality hostels. ...
Buy this book if you know nothing about where you are going and read it on the train/bus before getting there but don't have it out when you arrive or you'll be hassled by homeless people and be a target for thieves. You should always look like you know exactly where you are going when you arrive somewhere, it's way safer that way.
VERY LITTLE IMPROVEMENT OVER THE LAST EDITION.......2002-12-21
As somebody who has a good knowledge of U.S. Geography (and History), I will not condemn this book too much. However, I will not rate it high. Its "updated information" is more or less superficial. Except for the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, there is no grounded addition or remarkable improvement over the last edition. I was disappointed to observe that most other updatable facts and figures remained unchanged. Anyone who already has the previous edition shouldn't consider buying this one. Donate the dough to charity; or do something else with it. 'September 11' is the only big deal here!

I just wanted to point out that most of these poor reviews are based on the first edition. The new one is obviously more up to date and is more polished than the last edition.

This is the Best Backpacking Guide for Alaska!.......2000-02-02
3 mos. in Alaska and I used this book extensively! I plotted numerous trips from multi-day trips to long "all day" hikes with the aid of this book. I did about a 3rd of the trails in this book (maybe more) and the trail descriptions are accurate. Additional information regarding lodging was extremely useful....... If you are planning a backpacking trip in Alaska, buy this book! It would have been difficult finding backpacking information without it.

Jim Dufresne does a great job in outlining excellent hikes to take throughout Alaska. We used this book in a number of areas. He gives the backpacker's view of things, not the typical tourist's. Mr. Dufresne also wrote a great book on Glacier Bay. The only guidebook we used to kayak the area. We would have never done that area had we not come acrossed his book in Michigan where he is from.

Downright incomplete.......2007-06-03
I am a major, lifelong supporter of Lonely Planet from the first core Asia books. I have till date not filed a review of a book online, but felt compelled to highlight some major deficiencies in this product and make a recommendation to look elsewhere for information on the American Southwest. Of late, I have begun branching away from Lonely Planet for more detailed information, but still rely on it for useful phone numbers, maps and other logistical information. For a three week camping trip in the Southwest with a few splurges along the way, I wanted to rely heavily on just such a book.
In the Southwest book, much of this information was not present (for example, 'Many campgrounds are available in local state parks' is one of the entries, but no phone numbers, maps nor details given. Not only were options for lodging half-heartedly described, often food options and maps were entirely missing or erroneously described.
The cities are a bit better described, but that isn't offering much of an excuse for an area and geography that is utterly unlike any on earth.
It is not surprising that this particular book is so short on useful information given its small size, but I found it egregious that LP would compromise so heavily on its core responsibility - providing useful, practical information that saves time and enhances the travel experience.
I highly recommend flipping through another guidebook in your local bookstore or experimenting with one of the other brands before relying on the Lonely Planet in this case. I plan to do so for the near future.
The leader in books on the American Southwest.. A must-purchase!.......2007-04-05
I recently made a road trip across the American Southwest and purchased both the Lonely Planet 4th Edition (December 2005) and the Rough Guide 4th Edition (October 2006) as my guides for the week-long adventure. Lonely Planet emerges as the clear winner when the two are compared side by side. It is less than half the thickness of the Rough Guide book, yet has more coverage per town or natural site. I commend Lonely Planet for using such a thin but readable font and thin, high-quality paper to make this guidebook have such a small footprint.
The Lonely Planet guide is divided into tabbed chapters by state (the guide covers Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Las Vegas, and Southwestern Colorado). Maps cover both regions and downtown areas of the major cities and towns in the Southwest. For each city, restaurants, hotels, attractions, and essentials like internet access, post offices, bookstores, and medical facilities are listed. The sidebars contain information from a historical or side note perspective--these are perfect for reading aloud during the inevitable driving time for any Southwest adventure.
If you are planning to spend a long time in the Grand Canyon or other attraction area, I recommend purchasing an additional supplemental guidebook. As a road warrior, I appreciated that this book has all the essentials, but leaves week-long trips to Las Vegas or the Grand Canyon to other guidebooks.

This guide has tons of info for food, lodging, shopping, services, attractions, and activities. Margin "tabs" make it easy to thumb to a specific area. My only complaint is the greyscale maps are unreadable because of tiny fonts and low contrast.There is bleed thru from backside of pages also causing contrast problems and readability. Overall though, it is a good, packable guidebook.

It's considerably difficult to make sense of so much land in one book, so this guide ends up with brief entries and succinct recommendations. It's useful for suggestions on where to eat and sleep, and places to visit by car. If you want to do a more "adventure" trip, such as to the national parks, you might be better served by more specialized books out there for specific areas.

I compared this guide with Mobile's and Frommer's when I visited a book store and I ended up buying this one even though it was the most expensive. It appeared to me that it contained more useful and condensed info compared to the Mobile guide. That one used big fonts and a lot of gaps in the text so it filled up pages with not much. The Frommer's one was more bulky and felt that I couldn't spot some useful info quickly. It's interesting to notice that the previous version of lonely platet's southwest had very good ratings compared to this one. I haven't seen that edition. I hope this new one maintained some of its quality.

Superb!.......2007-06-04
I'm so glad I stuck with Lonely Planet (LP) for my 4 day trip to Colorado where we covered everything from Rockies to Colo. Springs, Denver, Boulder and also did rafting and hiking.
This book is great and lists everything that you need. Accomodations, maps, rafting companies, tourist traps, restaurants, etc. Very nice, exactly what you would expect from LP. Although I haven't tried other states yet, I'm looking forward to making a trip to Yellowstone soon ...

Cons: In case you are new to the lonely planet style of writing, let me warn you that if you are looking for a book which is heavily edited and proofread, then you will be disappointed. This lonely planet book is written in a style which is reminiscent of the old LP books - it seems more like a brain dump of everything the writers encountered. They then tried to put most of the things under appropriate headings and did a fair job. This is what I expect from a 'pack and go' book like LP so it works for me. YMMV.
A Norsemans Journey to Rocky Mountains.......2000-02-08
I had the opportunity last year to visit the Rockie mountains. Mainly Colorado and a fast trek throught or should I say to Montana. Having bought Lonely Planets books on both Australia and South Africa earlier (trips that didn't come to fruition, yet) and also having enjoyed some of the tv programs from the same people I thought this would be the best bet for my trip. And it sure was. Now most of my stay in this erea was in Denver so maybe I could have just bought a book on Denver, but as much as I enjoy travel books they tend to be a bit expencive and this offered more value to me. An the books offers more than adequate information on Denver and it's immideate surroundings. Later on the book gave me what information I needed during my brief stay in Montana. The book also informed well about the strain of arriving in the Mile High City (Denver) when you are a lowland dweller, so it didn't come as a shock. Good thing that ! I'm going back to this region of the US, you can count on that and this book will come along on the next trip as well.

Printed in China? for a book about a MAJOR US Landmark?.......2006-07-21
I was disapointed to see a book about a US NATIONAL LANDMARK printed in China. This fact is not mentioned in the amazon.com description.
This book was not produced by an "insider" - that is, by someone who lives/lived in the area or traveled US 66 frequently. Instead, it's an international group. Now I suppose that makes it easier with which to plan a trip given that I too, am an outsider (from the US 66 area of the United States). But please, let's print something so near and dear to many hearts of many Americans, right here in the United States. Please.
Also, the color maps: Convenient, very tiny (I purchased a larger, hand-drawn map series together with this book). However, on these maps, it's very difficult to discern between the "original" US 66 route and the "alternate" or "updated" route, as they're in the same (purple) color. The original have more of a haze, and the revised, a more "crisp" color border around the roadway on the map. Perhaps a more contrasting color scheme could have been used.

This book is all but useless, really advise not to waste your money...It will not help you as you drive down the road...it has a few places to stop and see and that's about it!! Get a good guide like the Route 66 Adventure Handbook and the EZ66 Guide for travelers......see you on the road!!
Essential for a Route 66 Road Trip.......2004-09-12
If you're heading out on a tour of the Mother Road, take this with you. Along with listings for sites you won't find in some other guides, this book also has addresses and phone numbers so you can contact hotels, etc., in advance.
When I was setting up my agenda for a Route 66 tour, this is the only place I found a reference to "Elmer's Place." Check it out when you're on the road...

Full of ideas and covers all the good stuff.
This is not a city resturant guide, however. Someone else gave this book 3 stars because it only told them about the highlights of what makes the Pacific Northwest special, and didn't name the 5-star resturants. I am a 4th-generation Seattle-ite and fancy resturants are not my scene. Go anywhere, eat wild salmon and a latte, then go do some more walks or boat trips or something like that!
Excellent Guidebook for an Expansive Trip.......2005-07-28
I literally just got back from my trip which spanned from Berekely, CA- Vancouver, BC and we used this book throughout the whole trip. The hotel and restaurant recommendations are excellent and for every price range. We did a lot of last minute changes of plans and the book was able to help us with those hotel reservations. It also contains great maps and excellent background history of the area. If you are traveling through the Pacific Northwest I highly recommend this book.
Good guide for sightseeing, but NOT for hotels, restaurants.......2004-10-11
While this book provides fairly accurate guidance regarding natural features and campgrounds, don't use it a reliable guide to travel necessities that are market driven like hotels, restaurants, admission costs, etc. Each time we used the book to choose a hotel, we were surprised and sadly disappointed in either the quality, the cost, or both. The same for recommended restaurants. Admission costs were generally 20% higher than listed. No big deal, but again, for a current publication it fell short in accuracy. It's as if an earlier printing was simply published as current without checking on the accuracy of the contents.
Use it as a guide, but not as a reference. I'm sure there are other sources of more accurate information for travelers.
Beautiful North Oregon Coast.......2004-03-28
This is a really good book for exploring the Pacific Northwest and we had a fantastic trip using it. The only place it left out that we think it should include is the heavenly ZEN GARDEN Bed and Breakfast on the Oregon coast in Manzanita.
The rooms are beautiful, it is almost on the quiet, dreamy, seven mile beach, nearly in the forest of the Nehalem Bay State Park, and the breakfast is Huge and DELICIOUS.
Excellent planning guide with lots of background info!.......2001-08-15
We used several guides in planning a recent trip to south and central Oregon, with a stop at Mt. St. Helens on the way home, and this one was by far the most informative! Before we went to a particular destination, I would tell my family, "First you have to listen to this!" Then I would read Lonely Planet's description and historical/geological background of the site we were about to visit. I think we all enjoyed our trip much more because of this "anticipatory set."
Highly recommended, not only for first-time visitors to a region, but for natives to learn more about the beauty and history right in their own backyard.

A great book for people who want to know what should be on their lifelong "to hike" list. I have found the maps to be very accurate, and the overall selection of hikes to be excellent.
This book shouldn't be used alone - for many of the hikes, there are numerous variations that can be figured out with a more detailed, area specific guidebook, and a map, of course.

The Best Hikes in the USA.......2002-12-07
This book is quite unique in terms of hiking selections and a valuable book for anyone who wants to experience some of the best of what the U.S. has to offer in terms of hiking and backpacking.
One of the most unique aspects is that it focuses on a handful of the best hikes in the most scenic locations in the U.S., not just the best hikes in every state. Let's face it, the scenery in every state is not created equal! You would have to read 40 books and thousands of pages to try and figure out which hikes are the most most spectacular, the hikes most worth the effort that hiking and backpacking can demand. This is the only book I have come across that has done this for you and done a good job at selecting the some of the very best hikes.
Another unique aspect is the hiking maps, which I found very easy to read with out knowing anything about maps. I am sure that topographic maps are more detailed and required for wilderness survival, but these mini trail maps are user friendly and easy to understand without having mapping knowledge.
There are certainly many other great hikes in these and other locations, so I am hoping for a sequel. And also another edition that will follow the same format entitled "Hiking Our Planet!! Can I pre-order before it is written?
Too much space, not enough time.......2002-06-27
This tries, although admirably, to cram a lot of country into one book.
Incomplete and impractical for the domestic traveler.......2001-09-13
As a fairly avid hiker, I found little to no value in this book whatsoever. On a positive note, it did provide minute details on what to expect on the trails, as well as important safety precautions for individual parks both with regard to weather conditions and wildlife. Nonetheless, its shortcomings outnumbered its merits.
First, the book is geared almost exclusively towards the foreign traveler. It spends the first section of the book covering issues of concern to those unfamiliar with customs and practices of the United States. This was not the major difficulty I had with the book, however. The hikes and travel routes suggested all expected the reader to enter the park/trail from one side, hike through, and exit from another side of the park. In some parks there are shuttles provided to and from sections of the park (i.e. Zion), but in my experience that is the exception rather than the rule. Many of the hikes spanned twenty or more miles in a single direction and unless you had a car waiting on the other side of the park, they present a huge logistical difficulty for most people driving to their destinations.
I was very disappointed to find no round-trip backcountry hikes in this book and wound up returning it several days after purchasing it because it was useless to me. Serious hikers are better off consulting ranger stations at the individual parks to get detailed information on hikes. Rangers can advise you on what types of hikes are best for you based on your skill level and how long you want to be in the woods or on the trails. Though I can see how an international traveler might find some of the information valuable, this book was disappointing and impractical for my purposes. The useful information it provided can easily be found in a multitude of other sources.

I have bought many hiking books that tell all about the suggested hikes. After reviewing this book, I felt that it was more than a guide to trails, it goes beyond the normal. It is a compact book that can be carried in your pack that includes a lot of resourceful information. It includes facts, flora & fauna, health & safety, and transportation from various locations. It also includes topo maps of each region (small scale), information of each hike from start to finish. This book also tells you whether you need a permit to hike or not.For those that would like to know about surrounding towns or places to stay or eat, it's all included. Each description of the various hikes were very descriptive to the point of making me feel as if I was already on the trail, ie. seeps where tadpoles reside and fresh mint grows in abundance. There is also a section that includes long-distance trails. For a book in it's first edition, I was well pleased. So much information in one book. Great job!

A Handy Little Reference Manual.......1998-05-19
This guide is a quick reference for lots of interesting places to dive in Texas. It provides a nice table at the beginning of each entry giving depth, visibility, water conditions, ease of entry, nearest place to get tanks refilled and suggested dive ability.
Color pictures, both in and out of the water, are provided for practically every dive site listed.
On the strength of this guide, I'll be buying guides from the same publisher to other dive destinations.
