Concise, efficient.......2007-08-23
This guide gives all the right information, not too much and not too little, as well as good maps. I liked the maps this guide gives better than the "London A to Z" map, at least from a tourist's perspective.
Good but room for improvement.......2007-07-18
I normally have no complaints about Lonely Planet books - I've used them repeatedly. The London book is good with great maps, descriptions, directions, and updated admission costs and times, however, I found two things below my expectations: While the maps are good, this edition did not list supermarkets as most other Lonely Planet books do. (When touring on foot as I normally do, I like stopping in to a supermarket for a quick snack or drink - usually quicker and less expensive than going to a restaurant.) The other feature I found confusing is listing sights outside of London proper with no directions on how to get there. If I wanted sights outside of London, I'd had bought the Britain edition! If excursions outside the city are listed, it would help to see how to get there and an indication of how long it would take to get there, so one can plan an itinerary.
A big list of restaurant that are useless for a backpacker.......2007-05-18
. The information about the history of London was Ok.
. Ok with the walking tour
. All the highlights and backdoor are inside this guide
BUT...looking with a backpacker eyes..
. They should reduce the big restaurant list and make a better explanation of the highlights is the sight section.
Just for your information, I love Lonely Planet...this is a constructive recommendation that I give to all the city guides...
Another important thing, specially for what they call "A city guide"...they should give more information (map and path) of the buses. Yes...it is not Paris...in London it is easy to find a map for the buses...free of charge...BUT ...I am paying more that US$15 for a city guide, man...they should include.
So, I think, less restaurant and better transport and sight information.
Hit or Miss.......2007-03-23
I went to London for about 5 days. A lot of this book was out of date, such as ticket prices for admission to tourist attractions and opening times). Since this edition was published in January 2006, I would recommend a more recent guidebook.
The restaurant recommendations were more upscale than I was hoping for. A place described as Italian with mains costing 7-p pounds actually turned out to be a Mediterranean tapas place and ending up costing 40 pounds per person. I would agree with a previous review that the accomodations were a bit pricier than I was looking for and had better luck finding a place online. I gave it two stars because I did find a nice, traditional pub to hang out in that I went back to multiple nights.
Cross referencing attractions would have been nice - if you looked for a certain subject in the index, it could be spread across 3 different pages (ie. pg 11, 213, 77). I spent a lot of time during my trip with my nose in this book, and I had even flipped through it beforehand! (it took me 2 hours to decide on the inexpensive "Italian" restaurant).
The Walking Tours were ok, but I got the feeling I was missing a lot of things as I followed the maps in the book. I also got lost a lot, which may or may not could be attributed to the book (my travel companions are still laughing about it).
I was so unhappy with this book, I purposefully left it in my rented flat in London. Choose another guidebook.
Great guide to London, could use more budget info.......2006-12-06
I used this book for a five-day trip to London, my first time there. It was very helpful, contained just the right amount of information, and gave useful suggestions of what to do with my limited time. I was a little disappointed with the lack of budget accomodations included in the book (hence the four stars instead of five) but otherwise, all of the recommendations I followed were great.

Only good for central london. It is a small and basic map with a London guide (let's goes guide) binded in between. I guess it's good for tourists for the week, but not for me b/c i will be living outside central (just downtown) london.

One Of The Top Guides For London.......2005-12-19
There are many guides to London. From what I can see there are two good general guidebooks. These are the Eyewitness Travel (DK) guide which is the one that I personally prefer or Lonely Planet (the present book). These two books are both just around 500 pages and both are tremendous efforts. They are well balanced guides with lots of photos, maps, history, etc. Both are clearly 5 star guides.
I would rate both (and DK Eyewitness Travel and Lonely Planet) head and shoulders ahead of Frommers or similar books that are less well balanced, i.e.; fewer photos. Overall, the DK guide has better photos and visuals. In fact I am amazed every time I pick up and read that DK guide with the quality of the photos and technical detail. Those graphics make for a better souvenir so it gets the nod as the better book, but it is a close call.
The city has lots of fun things to see and do but time is usually limited and it is expensive - so these guides are good investments. This book is well balanced and like the DK guide it pulls a lot of things together such as history and culture, food, towns and lots of interesting information on London. The book brings it all to life with just magnificent photos and maps, including subway maps.
I have one suggestion, and that is to buy the guide before planning your trip. The guide has lots of information and tips on places to see.
Either case this is an excellent buy. 5 stars.
outdated.......2005-09-14
The lonely planet london had some good walking tours, but for the most part, terribly out-dated in terms of prices for museums/attractions and also many stores/restaurants/internet spots have since closed. The maps are decent.
Lonely in London........2005-01-09
I swear by the Lonely Planet travel guides, and this one is no exception. While planning my recent trip to London, I discovered two first-rate London guidebooks, this one, and Rick Steves' London 2005 (which I prefer of the two). The LP guide offers detailed maps in the back of the book, including a tube map. It also enabled me to find affordable hotel accomodations in the otherwise expensive Hyde Park area. LP's guide provides an excellent orientation of the city's culture, architecture, and history, and features several worthwhile walking tours through the Soho, South Bank, Fleet Street and central city areas of London. London is among the ultimate European travel destinations, and first-time visitors will need no more than this guide to explore the city's pubs, its fascinating streets and neighborhoods, and its many, great art museums.

You're going to LOVE BRITAIN! .......2004-09-23
I've spent a year in England and have made >30 visits all together.
Here are my reviews of the best guides....to meet you r exact needs.....I hope these are helpful and that you have a great visit! I always gauge the quality of my visit by how much I remember a year later......this review is designed to help you get the guide that will be sure YOU remember your trip many years into the future. Travel Safe and enjoy yourself to the max!
Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.
MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for pubs, hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the underground and the double decker buses. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the city centre. When you get to be an old London hand, remember that the classic Londoners guide will always be an A to Z (zed) map and guide. If you want to go a bit beyond the central core of the city (perhaps to Windsor, Hampton, or further away) you really need the proper AtoZ to be able to find exact routes and streets.
Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!
Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.
Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.
Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)
Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide
Perfect for student traveling.......2004-09-17
I would recommend this book to any student or individual who is traveling to London and cannot afford to live in the most expensive sections of London that Frommer's offers. I loved this book. I took it everywhere I went in London and never got losted. I had this book more often than I had my passport. I even got Jack Black's autograph in this book when he came for his movie premiere. If you are going to London, you must pick up this book first. It is the only thing you will need. There are maps inside and everything you will need to live and commute in London. This was my first Lonely Planet and would recommend it to anyone interested in really travelling London. If you are going that way, tell everyone hello for me in the Museum Tavern, which is where Karl Marx took his study breaks during the writing of the Communist Manifesto.

Customer Reviews:
Easy to use, all you need for a short stay.......2006-04-18
London can overwhelm, but this small book makes it manageable for first-time visitors as well as London junkies. There's an overview, sorting the commonly-visited tourist sites by type (sights, activities, kids' activities), as well as shopping, eating, and entertainment listings that provide enough information for a few days' visit. I even found a few gems listed that, in the course of many years visiting London, I had not known about--the Geffrye Museum is a good example. The maps are not as good as the A to Z or Benson's maps, but they work pretty well, and there's a handy Underground map in the front. A bus map of central London might have been helpful, though I'm not sure how they'd cram it in. You'll need something heavier (thus harder to tote around as you explore) for background reading, but this is portable and useful. I own this book and always get it as a gift for friends going to London for the first time. Enjoy!
Decent travel guide.......2005-11-02
If you're planning your first trip to London, then you'll want a travel book with more detailed information than this one. If you've been to London before and just need a crutch to fall back on accompanied by some good maps then this book may be for you. It's a small guide and will easily fit in a jeans back pocket or jacket pocket. The maps in the front and back covers are pretty good. It gives a page or two to all the major must-see places in London and is a easy read. Most likely though, you will want to check out the Rick Steves' guides which are updated every year.

Save your Money.......2004-07-15
We bought this map because of the wonderful map they had for Paris. This map was terrible. It did not have many of the smaller streets. Do yourself a favor, by a "Time Out" guidebook for London. Their map was excellent; as it should be Time Out is headquartered there.
Not Worth It!.......2004-02-18
Having been to London twice and still not seeing it all, I bought this map after losing my trusted map. It is sturdy and easy to handle, but very confusing and not in any georaphical order. I would hate to be a lost tourist in London for the first time relying on this unreliable map.
Concise and Very Useful.......2004-01-15
This is an excellent map of London. Evidently some of the tube information is a bit out of date, but aside from that minor quibble, it is a very sturdy and utilitarian map. I like that it is an accordion fold laminated card format, as it is eminently durable and near waterproof. It would be very difficult to damage.
It is particularly good to gain a 'lay of the land', particularly in the planning stages of a trip. It is quite easy to visualize where you will want to stay, visit, walk and ride. I like that it has a nice 'London walking tour' outlined, and has all prominent landmarks and points of interest clearly labeled. There is also an excellent and complete index, map of West End theatres, an inset map of inner London, and an underground map.
Overall, for initial trip and route planning as well as navigating London's sights, this is an excellent map at a bargain price!
Must Have.......2003-11-21
Just got back from London. I thought the map was excellent. It's very durable and fits in your pocket. All sights are laid out and it also includes a tube map. I also was in Paris and had that Lonely Planet map too. Both were indispensible.
Older map but still pretty good.......2003-03-27
The map is a fantastic map for your first time in London. The only gripes are that the map is 4 years old, and doesn't reflect London's new area code, nor does it have updated Tube maps. The solution is to just grab an updated Tube map from any Underground station. Not a big deal, but still a major gripe.
But Lonely Planet maps are fantastic - they include walking tours and every major point of interest is covered.

How many stars, please........2002-03-02
While somewhat useful as a general guide to London restaurants and prices, this directory would serve the visitor better with some subjective ratings of the usual one to five star variety. Most tourists want to know where the good grub is at a good price. Aside from a couple of references, this book doesn't really tell you.
