See The Real Africa.......2007-07-09
We have relied on this book on two trips to Kenya and Zanzibar. It provides great tips on places that are off the well-beaten tourist sites and provide the traveller with a taste of the real Africa. Some of our best dining experiences in Africa were at the small local resteraunts identified in the Lonely Planet guide that we never would have known about. If you just want to look at wild game from your safari van and hang out with other tourists at game lodges, you don't need this book. However, if you want to experience the real Africa and have a meaningful cultural experience that will change your life, but this book!
Useful for Kampala, Uganda.......2007-03-08
We traveled to Uganda and Tanzania. We got the guide for Tanzania, but couldn't find one for Uganda. It was pretty useful and I liked their suggestions for evening activities in Kampala. I thought the book could have used some pictures (don't recall there being any, except maps).
It's particularly nice to read on the long flights from the US to Africa as a build up to your trip. I usually believe in getting my information online, but it was very convenient to have this with us. Well researched and handy.
Used for traveling through Kenya during October 2006.......2006-11-03
Though we originally planned to travel through the entire East African region, we ended up travelling in Kenya only. Although Lonely Planet have a more detailed book for Kenya alone, we found this book informative enough to provide us with all the necessary information. Schedules and prices were pretty up to date except for park fees that have been recently updated in Kenya.
It was easy to find the needed information and having a separate section for Safaris was certainly helpful.
The mountaineering sections were a bit short (they have a special book for that), and more detailed information could have been helpful, especially in mount Kenya.
Other than that, it's probably the best option at the moment if you travel through the region, as this edition has been issued last June.

Lonely Planet Watching Wildlife: East Africa.......2005-09-06
I recently took a wonderful trip to Africa and went on several game drives. We saw so many new animals that I didn't know existed. Two of my friends, also on the trip, had your book. This book explained about the animals and had such great pictures that were such a help in distinguishing the animals. I liked the small area map that tells where the animal is found. The organization of the book is so helpful and easy to find what you are looking for. I have read it over and over again and used it as a reference for my presentations.
Lonely Planet Watching Wildlife: East Africa.......2004-02-06
Organized in 3 sections: habitats, parks, animals. The sections are well organized, easy to find what you want and easily cross-referenced. Helped us tremendously in planning where we wanted to go and what we wanted to see in East Africa. Wonderful pictures, too.

From Antarctica to Zimbabwe, if you're going there, chances are Lonely Planet has been there first. With a pithy and matter-of-fact writing style, these guides are guaranteed to calm the nerves of first-time world travelers, while still listing off-the-beaten-path finds sure to thrill even the most jaded globetrotters. Lonely Planet has been perfecting its guidebooks for nearly 30 years and as a result, has the experience and know-how similar to an older sibling's "been there" advice. The original backpacker's bible, the LP series has recently widened its reach. While still giving insights for the low-budget traveler, the books now list a wide range of accommodations and itineraries for those with less time than money.
Considered the Bible of East African travel, this LP guide offers useful critiques of places to eat and stay--from camping and cooking your own grub to offerings in high-end hotels; advises you on how to choose an organized safari or plan your own; provides national park essentials; offers details on Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya treks; and will get you interacting with the locals by way of its helpful Swahili language section. With useful background on the region's diverse people, cultures, and politics, the book also contains an excellent 32-page color wildlife guide with creatures ranging from bongos to baboons. --Kathryn True

The Bible!.......2005-11-08
I think this book has to referred to as The Bible by anyone who has been to East Africa. Great for helping you get around the area. If you are working there like I was it is great for helping you figure out weekend excursions. Assume that the prices aren't exaclty right, especially since you can pretty much negotiate a price for anything anywhere down there. Don't worry about taking other books just get this one and you are set. Have fun in East Africa!
Great advice! And very accurate.......2005-02-25
I just did a trip to Kenya and Tanzania (Fall '04), and this book was invaluable! Everything was described in great detail - where to go, how much to pay, what route to take - which is great information when a mob of 20 taxi drivers is trying to wisk you in every direction!
This is definitely the book to have for this part of the world!
Happy Travels!
Great guidebook for a regional trip!.......2005-01-25
I recently spent 3 months traveling and working in East Africa, and found the LP guide to be a great help. I selected the regional guide because I would be traveling in several countries, and I banked on the fact that it would give enough detail on each one. Even though it clearly doesn't give as much detail as the individual country guidebooks, it definitely gave enough to send me in the right direction, always with accurate maps, phone numbers, prices, etc. in hand. One word of caution, the Rwanda and Burundi chapters are tiny. They give you a good start, but if you're seriously thinking of going to either of these countries, you need much more than this guide can offer.
I did appreciate that the authors were honest about the fact that there are many different possible itineraries in the region, and they try to help you choose one for yourself rather than feeding a list of "must-sees" to you. In addition, the chapters on safaris are quite honest when they advise travelers to investigate things for themselves; the only way to select a low- or medium-budget safari is to do some legwork yourself.
All in all, a great book! A must-have for any independent traveler to East Africa!
This is the only guide to have in East Africa.......2001-05-15
I am a solo female traveler who has just spent three months in East Africa. Every traveler I met had this guide. I agree that it is the 'bible' of east africa. Travelling to this area you don't have much of a choice of travel guides and this gives good information on all the little villages, how to get around, how to survive a matatu.... all the visa infomation, cultural information.... everything you need to have an awesome trip.
I also recommend getting the Trekking East Africa guide if you plan on doing any trekking. It goes more in depth then just the East Africa guide and if you find yourself on a mountain you will want a detailed map, which the East Africa guide lacks.
An absolute necessity for travellers to east Africa.......2001-03-04
There are many places in the world you can travel to without a Lonly Planet. East Africa is not part of that. East Africa is no doubt one of the most beautiful parts of the world but travelling and getting around here is not easy at all and has many "dangers" one should be aware of.
There are many ways to do it. You can go on an all organised expensive safari in Kenya or Tanzania. Even then I would think you would like to see some of the places outside the parks like Nairobi or Arusha.
The best way to do it is to travel by yourself. I have done it a couple of times now and find that all the organization by travel agents does not make up for the flexibility you have when you do it yourself. I have been in bad weather conditions necessitating an immediate change of plans. I have been so overwhelmed by the beauty of the Serengeti that I decided on the spot to stay longer. I have been so disgusted by some hotels I prebooked that I decided instantly to look for another one.
This book gives excellent and absolutely necessary guidance to do so. The getting around sections are good and up to date and, believe me, without it you will not find your way out of, e.g.Arusha on a bus to Nairobi. Local assistance is difficult to find.
Booking hotels in countries like Tanzania is not like we are used in the rest of the world. In most of the parks you have one or two lodges and if they are full you are outside; not a nice pprospect when you are right in the middle of the animals. The pricing information is fair and, again, you have to do some planning given the huge differences in prices between hotels. If you plan to stay in the Rhino lodge in the Ngorogoro Crater and the only open one is the Sopa, it will set you back at least an additional $100.
All the "facts for visitors" in particular the medical sections are good and should be read carefully. They can keep you from very annoying situations.
The safari sections are good and provide an abundance of companies you can organise your own tours with. They can be checked out in advance. The best way to do it however, if you have time, is to spend a few days in Nairobi or Arusha and compare the offers of the various companies and talk to the owners to see what they provide. You will be amazed how good and cheap these local operators are. A further advantage is that they go off the beaten track, so that you are not having a situation where eleven Volkswagen busses are in a circle around a sleeping lion.
For those reallly into it, try out camping in the Serengeti or Arusha. You will find yourself one with nature and, allthough there are no fences and you should keep a good fire going, relatively safe.
For those less adventurous and on a more tight schedule, the Guide still contains such a wealth of information and little sections on 'nice to knows' that it is well worth the investment.
If I would be allowed to advise I would prefer the Tanzanian side to the Kenyan side for going on safari. It is definitely more beautiful ond not half as busy.
Finally, I will never forget the images I took away from this part of the world. Cheeta's running through the grasslands in chase of prey. Lion mothers tending their cubs, the vast herds of wildebeest, the zebra's, giraffes peeping curiously through the leaves at your car and the wonderful sunsets sitting at a campfire and reflecting and the beauty of creation.
I hope you will enjoy your trip.

Only good for drivers.......2000-05-21
We returned this very thin volume almost immediately. It is essentially a road atlas for Egypt, and doesn't give any other information at all. If we'd been planning to drive out in the desert, this would have been great to have. We weren't.
so out of date it is dangerous.......2000-03-22
I have been traveling around Egypt by 4WD, along the Nile valley and also in the Eastern and the Western Deserts. I took this book and found it useless -- worse than useless, in fact, because it is so inaccurate and out of date that it is dangerous to rely on. I recommend instead a good map such as that by Freytag + Berndt.
Egypt travel Atlas - Lonely Planet Series.......2000-03-17
This atlas is way out of date (i.e., 1996) and not for the serious drive-yourself traveler. Be aware that most road identification signs are in Arabic, with only the major routes identified in English. I suggest using an up-to-date map, such as the Bartholomew World travel Map series - obtainable in bookstores located in Egypt.
A very helpful guide for traveling with your own/rented car.......2000-01-21
We explored whole Egypt using this atlas. We also had some dedicated road maps (Shell, Michelin, Halwag) but this one was the most usefull. The only problem is that it is not really up to date (1996) so that it does not include all the new roads (especially some desert roads). It also should include gas stations, which travellers with car might very usefull (again, especially in the desert oases).
Excellent and we wich to advertise i this book.......1999-07-12

Very good book - it saved my neck in Egypt!.......2007-05-24
I am so glad I bought and digested Lonely Planet Egypt before setting foot in Egypt recently. While the book is very good about places to see and things to do, it also has excellent information of what to watch out for. I can't stress enough some of the points made in the book about being vigilant, counting your change, respecting the religion, and not being swindled left and right. The book makes a point of how to deal with taxi drivers, hotel staff, tipping, and even shopping insights. Obviously the book paints a pretty positive picture of Egypt, but few people come back with positive attitudes about Egypt when they return, but no other book tells you point blank what to expect when you get there and how best to enjoy the sights and sounds of Cairo and the rest of the country. I can safely say that if I had not bought Lonely Planet Egypt, I may have even had much worse things happen to me there, so I really credit this book for saving my neck since Egypt is not the safest destination for American tourists nowadays - be sure to read the US State Department info before departing. Buy the book and be sure to think on your feet while you are there - those are the two most important things to have on hand in Egypt.
Thorough & helpful - another LP winner.......2007-03-09
As always, from health to history, from the Nile to the necropolis, Lonely Planet does it again--assaulting you with helpful information you need before traveling. I did not check to see if there was a "Footprints" guide (which I highly recommend for South America and Peru over the LP guides) for Egypt. But I have been very satisfied with LP's work with Egypt.
A must-have for any Egypt trip.......2007-01-05
My friends and I took both the Rough Guide and Lonely Planet on a recent two-week trip to Egypt. RG had better maps, but it was the LP we repeatedly turned to for reference on dining, shopping and sightseeing. Some prices were slightly inaccurate, but the guide was extremely accessible and easy to understand. The descriptions of museums, temples and tombs were concise while offering enough information for us to grasp what it was we were seeing.
We would especially recommend LP for younger adults who are traveling on a budget but can afford the occasional splurge.
A "must-have".......2006-09-09
The collaborative effort of travel experts Virginia Maxwell, Mary Fitzpatrick, Siona Jenkins, and Anthony Sattin, Egypt is now in its newly updated and expanded eighth edition as the author-researched, traveler-tested guide from Lonely Planet to experiencing the wonder of the Land of the Pharaohs, whether on a business or pleasure trip. Black-and-white and color maps and photographs illustrate this information-packed guide to key locations in Cairo, the Nile Valley, the Western Desert, the Suez Canal, the Red Sea Coast, and much more. History, hours and admission costs of landmarks, a handful of useful words, and a crash-course in adapting to unfamiliarities of Egyptian culture are among the many useful features that make the 8th edition of Egypt a "must-have".

Good introduction, but not enough on the trekking peaks.......2003-02-13
I found this book a good introduction to anyone expecting to go trekking in East Africa. It goes over, in substantial detail, all the factors you may face (medicine, visas, hotels, transportation, tours, trails, etc.). However, there is very little on the trekking peaks, which I thought would be the most interesting portion of the book. For example, on Mt Kilimanjaro there are only maybe 5-6 pages, with only an overview description of the routes. If you are looking for overall trekking in East Africa, this is good book, but if you are looking for info on the trekking peaks, there are other, more specific guides, that may be more helpful.
Essential luggage items: meds, visas and Lonely Planet.......1999-01-20
I used this book to plan and complete a Kilimanjaro climb, a Tanzanian safari (Serengeti, Olduvai Gorge, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara) and a trip up the coast of Kenya. The book was more than helpful; it was essential to the success of the trip. Helpful information is complete, accurate and relevant: exactly what you will find in the Lonely Planet Trekking guide. The helpful information -- routes, housing, food, currency, gear, etc. -- are tools to keep you safe, healthy, prepared and even comfortable. The essential information is much more: it gives you a feel for where you are going and what's important about being there. Descriptions of languages, religions, customs, history, geography, geology, climate, etc., gave me a deeper awareness of the countries I was navigating through. This book is strong on both counts. Here's an example: The vocabulary lists were really helpful in opening conversations with staff, villagers and border officials. However, the book's essential advice was to just try your best at speaking Swahili, and the people you meet will respond very warmly to your having made the effort. The results were heartwarming, and they opened the doors to other discoveries I could not have made otherwise. The book itself is a valuable commodity. On Kilimanjaro I leafed through the chapters for maps and plant descriptions. The book so fascinated my guide that I gave him my copy as a parting present (though I couldn't part with it on the climb since it was the only map & route description we had!) Note that the Lonely Planet Trekking books do not promise to be field guides for the areas they describe: bring another volume(s) to help identify the flora and fauna you encounter.

The material is comprehensive, however, the index does not list many items so it is difficult to find what one is looking for.
When there are 2 names for one place it would be nice to give the page number and the other name rather than just give the name & then one must go to the other place in the index to get the page numbe.

Not recommended.......2003-03-03
This book gives the basics on where to stay, where to eat and how to get from point A to point B. The background information on the ancient sites is sparse. For better archeological info (out of a guide book) I'd recommend Mathew Teller's "Jordan-The Rough Guide" over this book. It provides more info on Petra and other ancient sites in Jordan, and focuses all its energies on Jordan alone.
Damien Simonis is one of the authors of this LP edition, and I love his other books, so I don't think the reason this book isn't a good choice has to do with the authors... it is simply because it is a small book dedicating itself to two countries... In fact, the Jordan chapter in this book is simply excerpts from the more thorough LP guide, "Jordan". So if you're going to Jordan and Syria, I'd recommend getting LP Jordan and LP Syria separately... Remember, the whole point of a guide book is simply to help you get the most out of your trip and time... it doesn't mean you can't wander off and find things on your own once your there!! Only a fool would think that way!
for the ignorant traveler who wants to remain ignorant.......2000-03-25
Yeah, the guide is full of practical information -- the book is after all for people who are afraid of getting lost or discovering anything for themselves -- but when it comes to informing you accurately and knowledgably on archeology, culture and history, it is a real let down. For the cheapest burger in town, buy this guide; but if you want something intelligent and informed, buy a better guidebook.
Full of useful information.......2000-03-06
Some of the world's earliest civilizations thrived in what are now Jordan and Syria, and it is therefore not surprising that hundreds of historical and archaeological sites are to be found in the region. This book offers in-depth coverage of the main sites along with clearly written practical information on everything else travelers need to know about to help them make the most of their visit: historical, cultural, and political notes, a helpful language section, a detailed glossary, maps, photos, and accommodation and restaurant listings. Be sure to read the book before you go, and bring it along with you.
An ideal complement to the above guidebook is Sonia Uvezian's fascinating and highly informative "Recipes and Remembrances from an Eastern Mediterranean Kitchen: A Culinary Journey through Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan." This landmark volume should be required reading for anyone who plans to travel to the region or who is simply interested in its history, cooking, and culture.
Tells it like it is.......1998-02-05
In general the Lonely Planet series is by far the best travel quide set that I have ever used. You can discover out of the way places or you can go to the places where everyone goes. For those people who truly want to have an adventure and experience the culture of the people and the country, Lonely Planet is the way to go!
