5 out of 5 stars Easy, simple, no-fuss information for those who are going to Italy.......2007-07-24

This book is great for planning, because it's packed with useful information so you know what to expect, especially if this is your first trip to Italy. I'm used to giving travel planning seminars on Italy all the time, and this book is a staple!! I like to recommend it to students who are going on an exchange program, as well as adults going on a family trip. I wouldn't say it's something you want to actually take with you on your trip, because it's big and a bit heavy. You don't want to compromise valuable suitcase space, when you know Italy is known for shopping!!!

4 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2007-05-13

I love Italy broken down to 1, 2, 3 week visits, and by area and what to see. Easy to read and more informative than Frommer's. A must have guide for someone who is a first timer to Italy!

5 out of 5 stars italy for dummies -very helpful.......2006-11-02

We used "Italy for Dummies" for our recent trip to Italy. We had never been to Italy before and we were planning on touring without a group through Venice, Rome, Milan and Florence. "Italy for Dummies" gave us great ideas on what to see in limited periods of time.
This book gave us hints on the best tours, how to see each city in whatever amount of time we had alloted and what not to miss.
We did their recommended tours in most of the cities.

When we left our hotel room we would tear out the section pertintent to the city we were in and carry it with us all day consulting it as needed.

If you're planning on touring Italy on your own this book is a must! from the important train information to where to pick up a local tour it was invaluable!

3 out of 5 stars Out of date and miss informatin.......2004-04-24

The book needs to be updated. It has a lot of miss information on costs and only provides phone numbers, no email address, for contact information. Good for the basics but Fodors, Fommers and Rich Steves' Venice are better.

5 out of 5 stars Never leave home without it!!!.......2001-05-03

I am so happy that I had this book with me when I went abroad. My parents had been given a different tour book, but it was retired during the trip. Italy for Dummies was so simple to use. The maps were accurate and the hotel information priceless. Even if you've been before, this book is a godsend in a pinch. It helped me make great choices during a hectic time in Italy-"Holy Week" A must for any traveller.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Traveling and Tasting Italy.......2007-01-19

This book helps you select wisely amoung the countless wineries and labels of the delicious wine you will taste in Italy. The book makes it easy to understand which wine taste great in the separate regions, without having to know any of the stuck-up jargon wine experts blab to sound impressive. More importantly the book does not recommend the expensive wine to be best for your palate. You will find the bottles that taste like $50, but are less than $20.

4 out of 5 stars A very good beginning on the subject.......2004-06-04

This is a most appropriate way to begin the study of Italian wine - the theoretical part, that is. The book is concise yet clear and understandable, despite a substantial amount of new terminology. I use it also as a reference for choosing new Italian wines, when in a wine store. Must say though, that in these circumstances (in a store with people around me) the word DUMMIES, in big friendly letters on the book cover, is a disatvantage.

3 out of 5 stars TMI on Italian Wine.......2003-08-20

Although I loved this author team on past "Dummies" wine books, this one was a bit tedious. In the authors' defense, Italian wine is a complex and pervasive topic. The book covered every wine region and wine style in Italy and is not a book to curl up with, but rather one to utilize as a reference guide. It would be an essential piece of travel gear if one were going to Italy.

5 out of 5 stars A Modern View of Italian Wine.......2001-10-11

Italian wine was for many years seldom more than pretty good--and then something wonderful happened: the global economy. All of a sudden winemakers everywhere were competing for customers everywhere, and for most of them that meant they had to improve quality, and fast. Italian winemakers responded and successfully to the challenge. They now produce some of the most esteems top-of-the-line wines in the world as well as an increasing nmber of wines that are real bargains (that is, you get than you pay for). But too many wine writers have failed to keep up with this ar-reaching change, have failed to expand their horizons beyond France.

Not writers. Authors of "dummies" wine books since "Wine for Dummies" in 1995, they have closely followed Italy's quality revolution, and so can point you to a world of pleasure you might otherwise miss.

After saying that much I'm in danger of repeating what I wrote in my review of the authors'"FRENCH Wine for Dummies," published
simultaneously, so you should scamper right over to my review of that book for more details. Then you'll have the complete rundown on both.

One thing I should add: these books aren't really for dummies. I keep them at hand and I know several other pros who do too.

Cesare Casella, Italian chef extraordinaire, is out to prove that this food can be both simple to prepare and surprisingly healthy. Italian mothers and grandmothers wouldn't have it any other way! In Casella's previous culinary creation, Diary of a Tuscan Chef, we joined the author on a food pilgrimage to Tuscany. Now, in Italian Cooking for Dummies, the trek explores every region and its associated dishes. Casella and coauthor Jack Bishop embrace us as close friends with whom they have eaten pasta for years. One step at a time, the authors lovingly explain how to make Italian food at home, discussing ingredients and techniques. Scattered within each of the eight chapters are recipes for 29 pasta dishes, 7 risottos, 22 heavenly desserts--in fact, 150 delicious dishes altogether. In traditional For Dummies style, life is made easier by icons alerting you to timesaving tips or potentially disastrous situations--like leaving risotto unattended, which can lead to a big sticky vat of goo!

There is something here for every taste: meats, fish, pizzas, and vegetarian dishes, as well as desserts and salads. Pasta Wheels with Walnut Sauce makes a nutty alternative to pasta dishes made with tomato-based sauces. The Spinach Gnocchi are surprisingly simple to create and will be gobbled down in no time. Calzone with Mixed Vegetables is a healthy alternative to pepperoni pizza. Desserts are very well represented--here is traditional Creme Caramel, and a delightful Pink Grapefruit Granita.

So enjoy life and eat like the Italians do; Italian Cooking for Dummies shows you how. --Naomi Gesinger

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome reference!.......2007-07-27

This is a very informative and easy to follow reference for cooking Italian foods. I love the explanations for cheese types, wines, espresso, herbs and etc. This really helps me to understand what products to buy and how to buy them. The information on reading the labels olive oil was eye opening. I have tried a couple of the recipes and they are yummy and simple. I am hooked on the Asparagus with Parmesan and egg! It sounded rather weird but I tried it and absolutely love it, especially when I am in a hurry and hungry. I am so glad I have this cook book as a resource.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars surprisingly good.......2006-04-29

I looked forward to getting this book because I wanted to know more about Leonardo--the man. I had read the book, The Da Vinci Code, and that piqued my interest about him. But Dan Brown's book didn't explore the depth of Leonardo's contributions beyond his art. Da Vinci for Dummies was perfect for me because it explored a wide range of his interests such as dissecting human bodies and designing his flying machines. As is typical of the dummies series, the table of contents is very helpful if you want to jump around between chapters to focus on specific aspects of his life. There is also great effort to describe the times during which he lived and what/who were his influences. At first glance, you may consider these dummies books frivolous. But I found this book to be a useful, comprehensive, and fascinating biography of an amazing man.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2005-04-26

For those of you who don't know Leonardo's fascinating story, this book is for you! It reads like a novel, weaving the intricacies of Leonardo's life together in a well-written, suspenseful and integrated novel. A definite read for art aficionados, scientists and humanists alike.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Researched, Easy to Read and FUNNY !!.......2005-04-06

It's rare that a writer/editor has the depth of knowledge and confidence in her research to venture to have a little bit of fun with a historical/scientific figure of Leonardo's significance. Fortunately for readers, Jessica Teisch completely pulls it off. She writes this extremely easy to read and entertaining volume as if Leonardo was the next door neighbor she grew up with - In fact, at times, I was so entertained that it escaped my realization that I was actually picking up dozens of facts (i.e.; Leonardo was a lefty, a conplete non-conformist and that he actually didnt enjoy performing his exquisite anatomic dissections). All in all, this is a beautifully researched book that doesnt just educate you about Leonardo, but actually takes you all the way back to the Greeks and gives you a lovely tour up through the Rennaisance to boot. Where was this book when I was trying to impress historians and artists alike? Never mind - it's here now.

5 out of 5 stars Finally - A Book on Da Vinci that I Can and Want to Read.......2005-04-01

I've always wondered who Leonardo Da Vinci really was. Sure, I slept though most of my Renaissance and Art History classes - but when the subject would turn to Da Vinci, I would always perk up. Did he really invent all of those wacky things? Was he the founder of modern medicine and anatomy? Was he a heretic? Was he the really the consummate Renaissance man? Now, after recently reading the Da Vinci Code - many of those old curiosities have resurfaced.

Da Vinci for Dummies tackles the complex subject of Da Vinci in the time-honored fashion I've come to expect from the Dummies series. If only this book had been around when I was studying Da Vinci in high school! It is written with a deep sense of respect, if not admiration, for its subject. As with other books in this series, Da Vinci for Dummies is both very fun and extremely easy to read, and it is organized in a format that makes finding answers to specific questions a breeze without having to search through the entire book. But, don't be deceived by its outward appearance and ease of use. I found this book to be as scholarly researched as it is easy to read. So, I would highly recommend it to anyone who is studying Da Vinci or preparing a report on the subject. (Shhhh - don't tell your teachers I said this!) However - I would also recommend it to anyone who has the slightest interest in this curious and profoundly important individual. If you've read the Da Vinci code, as I have, and wanted to know more - consider this book a quick and easy, yet surprisingly scholarly refresher, in the subject!

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide to Leonardo.......2005-03-31

This is a fascinating work for those of you who want an overview of Leondardo, but don't have a desire to read an esoteric biography. My favorite part involved a discussion of Leondardo's flying machines. Who knew? I had no idea that he invented the precursor to the helicopter. A must for those who are fascinated by Leondardo!

I found this book to be incomplete and in need of decent editing. I found at least 3 major recipe mistakes 1.Roman style toasts calls for 7 slices of bread cut into 28 1/2 by 2 inch pieces 2.In the recipe for meatloaf after browning the meat, you are to add wine and broth to the browning pan but there is no instruction as to what to do with the broth. 3.The braised beef talks about a roast but lists the meat ingredient as 3 lbs of beef stew meat, cut into 2 inch cubes. But what really bothered me is the lack of vegetable recipes - this is not Italian cooking!

      Product Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on tailors dummies, lay figures, automatons, and animated displays used for shop window dressing in Italy face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying tailors dummies, lay figures, automatons, and animated displays used for shop window dressing to Italy? How important is Italy compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of tailors dummies, lay figures, automatons, and animated displays used for shop window dressing vary from one country of origin to another in Italy? On the supply side, Italy also exports tailors dummies, lay figures, automatons, and animated displays used for shop window dressing. Which countries receive the most exports from Italy? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for tailors dummies, lay figures, automatons, and animated displays used for shop window dressing in Italy. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for tailors dummies, lay figures, automatons, and animated displays used for shop window dressing for those countries serving Italy via exports, or supplying from Italy via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Italy fits into the world market for imported and exported tailors dummies, lay figures, automatons, and animated displays used for shop window dressing. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Italy in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Italy is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Italy compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.
