GREAT BOOK!.......2007-09-26
WHAT CAN I SAY IT'S LONELY PLANET!, GREAT BOOK!, IT'S GOT EVERYTHING YOU NEED, VERY UP TO DATE.
Excellent book.......2007-06-12
I purchased this book to help me with my family trip. It was quite helpful when I don't know how to say certain
things. I was able to learn how to ask for directions during our driving trips to Tuscany town. I was able to purchase fresh grocery, order food.
I also learn some Italian from the CDs I purchased from Amazon.
I highly recommend this book. My children picked up some Italian, too.
Came in handy for all sorts of scenarios you'll enounter..........2007-04-10
I travelled alone in Italy for one week, and this little book was so helpful...referenced it again and again during my visit. It came in handy for practical situations travelers always encounter...directions, menu verbiage, and basic conversation with locals.
It also helped in more specific situations...for women traveling, this will help you formulate quick responses to the "ciao bellas" you'll receive. Bene!
Potty Mouth Phrases.......2007-03-09
I thought this would be a great way for my 10 year old and me to learn a few phrases before our trip to Italy. This would have been fine if I was 20 years younger and traveling with a bunch of free loving hippies. Using this book, I can use pick up someone up at a bar, ask for a condom, let everyone know I brought my own needle and call people derogatory names. Sure, I can learn to order spaghetti for dinner, but this is definitely not what I was expecting. In the future, I will have to read over a phrase book in person before purchasing.
Great Language.......2007-01-16
This little book is magic, is clear, easy to understand. It going to help us a lot in our trip.

extremely useful.......2007-10-03
I went to France not knowing any French except what I learned from songs, and somehow I didn't think knowing how to say "fish" and "will you go to bed with me?" would be good enough. This book was really great for a lot of different situations and was way more useful than my friend who claimed to know French from 3 years of high school. The pronunciations were particularly useful, although be careful if you get a "telecarte" as they might sell you minutes on a cell phone you don't have, not a telephone card.
French Booklet.......2007-07-03
Its OK, I didn't use it too much. Everyone speaks English. Would have been more helpful if I'd went into the more rural parts.
French: Lonely Planet Phrasebook.......2007-05-19
The book is very useful for traveling...as expected from a lonely planet speech book. However, it would be better with an audioguide to pronounce it correctly.
Useful in all situations.......2006-12-06
I got this book as a gift before going to Paris for a month and after taking one quarter of French at school. This book is so useful in very many situations! With my basic skills in pronunciation and grammar, this book carried me through at restaurants, metro stations, going out, etc. The two-way dictionary is also great because I had French people look up words they didn't know in English. There's also a funny romance section that I don't know if you would ever use, but it's a great read and my French friends love it as well. Overall I would recommend this phrasebook if you're going to France for a short trip and as long as you learn some basic pronunciation you should be fine!
Excellent Book to get around!!!!!.......2006-03-10
I was in Paris and with the phonetic pronunciation of phases the Parisians would understand us completely. I was so surprised!!! This book was very helpful and I would recommend it to anybody who needs to get around in France. I just bought the Italian version for my next trip!!!!

Helpful.......2007-01-12
Bought the book before a vacation in Madrid. It was very useful and well organized. When I needed to look up a phrase, I found the book very easy to use. It gave more information that I needed!
The best thing you can bring with you.......2006-01-21
I bought this book on a whim before traveling to Spain for a summer study abroad trip. It turned out to be one of the most important things I brought with me! Particularly helpful was the food dictionary, which was frequently passed around the table during lunch and dinner (it may save you from ordering baby squids! Unless you're into that sort of thing). It is really a time saver to be able to quickly look up a phrase such as " Do you sell stamps?" instead of studying your spanish dictionary for 20 minutes. I highly recommend that anyone traveling to Spain who is not fluent in spanish take this book with them!
Great.......2005-04-30
I'm studying spanish in college as a prospective major, and am traveling to spain in less than a month. This book has tons of sayings that are very useful. Most of them are everyday expresions that native english speakers would not say very colloquially. It's divided up into different sections for easy access to a certain aspect of conversation. It is aimed at European(Spain)spanish and includes a few pages on Basque, Catalan, and Galician sayings. Great for a quick reference.

Excellent phrasebook!.......2007-05-19
We are getting married in Greece next summer and this phrasebook has helped me remember so many of the Greek words & phrases that I will need to know. I already know how to speak & read Greek, but this is an excellent refresher. It is a small book that you can take with you everywhere. Definitely recommended.

- join in the sport & festivals from Athens to Belfast

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Quick Reference.......2006-07-15
An excellent quick reference for all your travel language necessities in Europe. And it's a handy little size too.
Minority languages.......2005-06-15
it is great to see the smaller langauges of Europe in this guide!!
WE DO EXIST REMEMBER!!
Irish, Scots Gaelic, Welsh, Basque and Catalan take their positions as European languages of note!
All BRITISH and SPANISH people should know some words in THEIR lesser used languages! Otherwise they are not really British/Spanish!!!
Even covers Welsh! .......2005-03-18
If you plan to travel all over Europe, this book may get you through and save the time and trouble of carrying a different phrasebook for each country. It is small, just slightly larger than the average palm and full of basic phrases.
It doesn't cover every language but DOES include Basque, Catalan, Welsh, Spanish, Turkish, Italian, Dutch, French, German and a wealth of others.
WHat I especially liked:
1. The tips on how to break the ice in each country and join in conversations
2.Menu decoders and suggestions for each country
3.Essential words to get you through transportation checkpoints and on your way
4. Some of the basic sports and festivals in each country.
5. Written FOR the traveler with a strong emphasis on the most essential situations when a phrasebook might be needed.
compact comprehensivephrasebook with pronunciation.......2002-07-12
This book has several advantages over other phrasebooks:
* Its got most of Europe (except Eastern) covered, including Irish!
* It is small - about the size of two decks of cards.
* It has the english phrase, the phrase in the translated language and then in blue how you actually pronounce the phrase. The pronunciations are spot on - the best thing about this book.
* It has phrases on absolutely everything - I even got to use my Greek phrase for "I would not like it extracted please" when I spoke to a greek student at the Oktoberfest who was studying dentistry. Everything's covered: getting on buses, going to the laundromat, getting directions, etc. About 20 pages on each language with everything that you will need to get by for a while.
* It's cheap and all in one book.
* A must have for anybody going to Europe who doesn't speak all their languages - I think that's everyone.
Very Useful but Missed out on Eastern Europe.......2001-12-14
This book is a useful guidebook to many languages of Europe, however some of the omissions are a bit strange; It includes Catalan and Basque but not Eastern European, or Scandinavian languages. It's convenience lies in being able to look up the same phrases for different languages.
I suspect it covers a lot of material from other Lonely Planet Phrasebooks, such as the Spanish one, just not as comprehensively.

Good reference.......2007-09-02
If you know no German, like me, it's a useful book for pronunciation and vocabulary. It also includes useful, simple sentences that can help you out in a pinch. It's not a textbook, so purchasers of it shouldn't expect detailed info. I bought it on impulse at LAX on my way to Munich and was glad I did.
Not helpful.......2007-04-21
I bought this book figuring that Lonely Planet would have a relatively savvy and useful language phrasebook. However, this is a fairly poor guide to speaking basic German - I took it with me on my first trip to Germany and found this book to be confusingly organized when I wanted to find correct phrases in a hurry. In fact, there were one or two instances where I believe it taught me incorrect contextual usage. Look elsewhere.
Limited use if you speak basic German.......2005-07-16
The lonely planet German phrase book is well designed for a pocket sized two-way dictionary, but in my past three trips to Germany, Luxembourg, and Switzerland, I only pulled out the book on a few occasions. In fact, I've made more use of the dictionary while in international chat-rooms and trying to type basic German phrases.
The book is divided into some nice subject areas: practical (which includes travel and shopping phrases), social, food, and safe travel (which is more of an emergency section). I've made the most use of the food and social sections. I think most people traveling to German speaking countries will want to invest in a German language CD and learn your basic travel and shopping phrases from an audio program. German is pretty easy to learn for a native English speaker. However, having an extensive food dictionary on hand is a good idea when you are trying to order something other than "bier" or "bratwurst". (Of course, you should still treat yourself to German beer and bratwurst -- it is amazing!)
However, I still found the book to be of limited use, for two reasons: (1) despite the color coded subject areas, when I've really needed vocabulary fast, hunting through the book is still awkward, and (2) many German speakers can understand some amount of English. While I do like this book, I've found that I've not really needed it (I had two years of German as a kid). I carried my book in my small book bag, but never in my pocket. However, if you do not speak basic German, I'd recommend buying a copy of this book.

Purchased for a British ex-patriot returning to the UK.......2007-05-07
Very amusing, particularly to Brits. Purchased as a gag gift for a British ex-pat returning home to the UK for a trip.
Best Britspeak Guide.......2006-11-03
I love this book! I'm a big Britcom fan and can now get a lot more laughs out of my favorite shows.
incredibly helpful little book-fascinating too.......2006-08-06
This little book, which crams an enormous amount of information, both practical and interesting, should be in every Amnerican's pocket before they leave for the UK. I learned more from it than from several larger books put together. It even explains cricket, that baffling sport! I thoroughly enjoyed reading every page, and while I wasn't going to travel to Wales or Scotland to practice those versions of Gaelic, it is contained within should you wish to. A most superior book, and entertainingly written besides. Enjoy!
Phrasebook for Britain.......2004-12-06
Lonely Planet's "British Phrasebook" is a great introduction to the British way of life and speaking for foreigners. Whether you are an American going to visit the British Isles, or a person studying English as a foreign language this can be a good guide and reading supplement. Traditionally to Lonely Planet phrasebooks, this one gives you a short and easy-read introduction to the origin and modern state of English. Then follow the sections dealing with British English and regional languages.
The section on British English is, again traditionally, an introduction to the language through British culture, institutions, traditions and way of life. Some chapters open with humorous sketches by S. Hughes that will make you laugh out loud. You will learn how to greet people, how to talk over the phone, how to find your way in the world of slang and cockney (not being a thorough textbook or dictionary of these), how to brace yourself with the features of British pronunciation (not being a course on phonetics), how to tell a British word or expression from an American (not being a British-American dictionary), how to address the Queen or peers (without making you bored with the detailed description of the aristocratic history). But most of the contents are not even the lists of typically British words and expressions. It is an interesting, sometimes funny, sometimes witty, often highly informative yet brief description of British culture (music, sports, food, drink, housing, etc.) and institutions (political, educational, etc.), as well as of ways of travelling, spending your free time and free money. If you need to know the names of high-street shops or intend to watch a report from some cricket match, think of driving a car or going on a train journey, want to read a paper and know what's meant and what's not - "British Phrasebook" is one way of helping you survive in Britain.
The regional section tells you about regional accents and dialects of English with some examples. It also deals with Scottish Gaelic and Welsh. Here (in the last two chapters) there is a true phrasebook letting you say a lot of useful things in the native tongues of Scotland and Wales. Practical transcription enables you to pronounce sometimes quirky letter-combinations of these Celtic languages.
Written in a simple language and entertaining manner, while being very informative "British Phrasebook" is nearly a must-have on your next trip to the Isles and will certainly be your good companion, which will easily fit in a pocket.
Great icebreaker when you're in the UK.......2003-11-11
This book is great. It's tiny, easily hidden, extremely funny, and you can make British people laugh with it. Really! Even Brits find it fun to read... "Oh, so THAT'S what they mean on those American programs on the telly. I was wondering."
I read this little book before setting out to Scotland for a year. What a great thing to do! I was more prepared than many of the people I was traveling with to deal with the idiosyncracies of Brit-speak. I especially love the foreign language section in the back... you don't really need it, since everyone speaks English, but it's fun to whip out something in Gaelic and see how many people understand (answer: not many).
I highly recommend this book, if only for its entertainment value. You won't regret it! I'm even able to watch the BBC now!

A good way to brush up on Hungarian.......2005-07-05
I took one term of Hungarian in college, and I've been to Hungary a few times (but only for a few days each time). So I tried getting this book to relearn some of the language before going back to Hungary this year. It helped me do just that, and I was able to converse with plenty of non-English speaking Hungarians. This is a well-written book.
But how much will this book help you if you don't know Hungarian at all? I'm not so sure. To communicate in a language, I think you really need to hear it spoken and painstakingly learn a bunch of vocabulary words (I like using flashcards to do this). I think it will be more of a help to those who already know something about the language, or at least have access to someone who can help them practice it.
I'm glad I got this book. I recommend it.
Excellent New Hungarian Phrasebook!.......2005-04-03
Well, I am a native speaker of Hungarian myself, so I was quite curious to see this book.
For the most part, I found it very good.
The main part of the book, the phrases are quite good and natural - it really shows that they had native speakers check it.
The phrases cover all sorts of issues from shopping to visiting a doctor or even dating and having sex!
The boxed texts on culture are also quite good and often amusing.
It has only 12 pages on grammar, but that's quite spot on.
It does include a box on present tense verb conjugation (taking vowel harmony into account!), and has even devoted a whole page to conjugating four common, but irregular verbs (come, go, eat, drink). Another box conjugates "to be" and yet another shows the suffixes for possessions. I guess it's quite OK for the space.
The 2000 word dictionary at the back is quite comprehensive.
A weaker point is the "phonetical transliteration" system used - Hungarian is written fully phonetically in its original form (thankfully also presented here), but the phonetical transliteration provided here for English-speakers may result in blank looks in many cases - you could always choose to ignore it.
The intro contains useful facts about the history and roots of the language, though the map showing where Hungarian is supposedly spoken might raise some eyebrows in neighbouring countries! ;-)
The layout is attractive, with color illustrations.
I even like the cover (different from what is shown on Amazon)- certainly better than a kitshy horseman or traditionally clad dancer could have been! ;-)
Overall: RECOMMENDED.
If you are planning to spend any time away from the major cities and tourist areas, you will find it VERY useful!
