Perfect for what I needed and wanted..........2006-04-22
I was given the opportunity to speak at a user group meeting in Dublin this upcoming June, and I decided I didn't want to be completely ignorant about the country. While it won't be a touring vacation, I'd still like to know a bit more about where I'll be visiting. To that end, I received a review copy of Ireland for Dummies by Liz Albertson. It's a fun and easy read, and at least I won't be a *completely* stupid American tourist now.

For what I was looking for, this book was perfect. I'm not moving over there, nor was I looking for an in-depth discussion and critical analysis of Irish history and culture. I needed something that would give me an overall understanding of the country and the different areas. For instance, not having spent much time going beyond the nightly news, I didn't understand the relationship between Northern Ireland and the rest of the country. At least now I have a basic feel for the forces at play. I was also fascinated by the colorful history of the island over the centuries. It's amazing to think there are buildings and institutions there that are approaching a thousand years of existence. Makes the history of the United States look rather insignificant. If I were going to be headed off on my own for a week or so, the travel and sightseeing information here would be incredibly useful. Not only is there good information about what to see (and what possibly to avoid), the author also gives suggested amounts of time you might want to allocate towards a site. If you're thinking you might like to spend half a day somewhere and she suggests an hour, you might want to give your plans a second thought. I also liked a feature of this book that I haven't seen in others... They include a page of Dummies Post-It flags that you can use to tag important (to you) pages for further reference as you're traveling. A simple thing, but it makes the book even more valuable to take along and use on your trip.
My wife would like to visit Ireland and England one day, but not on the whirlwind schedule that this speaking trip will entail. When we *do* head back over there (and I'm sure we will), this book will be an essential part of our planning...
Like Traveling With a Fun, Smart Friend.......2006-01-28
As a fairly frequent traveler to Ireland, I appreciate a lively, well-researched guide with a real "feel" (and love) for the country, and this is it! I love the style. The writing is breezy and fresh, chock-full of sharp observations and savvy tips. We're already using the guide to plan our next trip.
Great for a first-time visit to Ireland.......2005-03-23
If you can read only one book to decide what to see and do on your first trip to Ireland, "Ireland for Dummies" is an ideal choice.
I read carefully their descriptions of popular and off-the-beaten-path sights, and advice for first-time visitors to the Emerald Isle. This book earns high praise. I agree with the authors' priorities, and they cover the must-see places and must-do activities with style. Reading this book, I was ready to throw my passport and some clothes into a bag and head to Ireland again, myself.
In addition to raving about the sights that most American visitors will want to see, the general tone of the book is enthusiastic. The information is well arranged, including lists of sites that are close together so that you can make the most of your vacation in Ireland.
If you're traveling with children, this book will guide you to the most fun, must-see destinations for the entire family. Few guidebooks are this helpful and understanding of both children's and adults' interests.
At the back of "Ireland for Dummies," their guide to the "top ten" sights of Ireland and Northern Ireland is excellent. Their advice about shopping is another plus. Finally, their worksheets are a great idea, as you're planning your vacation. They'll help you avoid details that are easy to overlook, but might otherwise spoil a great vacation.
In addition, the maps in "Ireland for Dummies" are large and easy to read... and worth writing on and tearing out, to take with you on your trip. The glossaries are very good and provide quick reference for the most confusing terms when you travel.
This book is probably too bulky to pack in your suitcase, but--as I often recommend (and do myself)--tear out the sections that cover the areas that you plan to visit. Keep those handy on your trip for quick reference, and you'll have a grand vacation or holiday!

Not recommended.......2005-02-11
This book is so full of errors that they are too many to list here. It really is a very bad source on Ireland that anyone who has any knowledge on Ireland would spot how bad it is. This is unfortunatley the type of book that gets publicity but is actually quite uninformed. If you want genuine information on Ireland and Irish culture I recommend that you go elsewhere.
An excellent resource.......2002-10-30
If you want to plan a great trip with a minimum of hassle, this book won't steer you wrong. This is a great guide to use if you don't have the time or energy to sift through a dense 600-plus page book. We used it on a recent one-week trip to Ireland and thought the hotel & restaurant recommendations were great, and the sightseeing info was all very helpful and accurate. We also liked the worksheets that help you sketch out a budget and itineraries.
I don't think it's fair to compare this book to a Rough Guide, as other reviewers have -- it's like complaining that your pocket Webster's doesn't have as many words as the OED. If you're looking for a totally comprehensive tome that covers every little detail in every corner of the country this isn't the book for you, but you probably guessed that from the title. There is more than enough information here for a one or two week trip to see the highlights of Ireland (both the Republic and Northern Ireland). The lively, humorous tone the book takes is refreshing, and makes the book actually fun to read. There's lots of general travel information that's helpful and reassuring if you don't travel overseas frequently, and lots of resources for anyone who wants to hunt down Irish ancestors.

Easy, simple, no-fuss information for those who are going to Italy.......2007-07-24
This book is great for planning, because it's packed with useful information so you know what to expect, especially if this is your first trip to Italy. I'm used to giving travel planning seminars on Italy all the time, and this book is a staple!! I like to recommend it to students who are going on an exchange program, as well as adults going on a family trip. I wouldn't say it's something you want to actually take with you on your trip, because it's big and a bit heavy. You don't want to compromise valuable suitcase space, when you know Italy is known for shopping!!!
Very Informative.......2007-05-13
I love Italy broken down to 1, 2, 3 week visits, and by area and what to see. Easy to read and more informative than Frommer's. A must have guide for someone who is a first timer to Italy!
italy for dummies -very helpful.......2006-11-02
We used "Italy for Dummies" for our recent trip to Italy. We had never been to Italy before and we were planning on touring without a group through Venice, Rome, Milan and Florence. "Italy for Dummies" gave us great ideas on what to see in limited periods of time.
This book gave us hints on the best tours, how to see each city in whatever amount of time we had alloted and what not to miss.
We did their recommended tours in most of the cities.
When we left our hotel room we would tear out the section pertintent to the city we were in and carry it with us all day consulting it as needed.
If you're planning on touring Italy on your own this book is a must! from the important train information to where to pick up a local tour it was invaluable!
Out of date and miss informatin.......2004-04-24
The book needs to be updated. It has a lot of miss information on costs and only provides phone numbers, no email address, for contact information. Good for the basics but Fodors, Fommers and Rich Steves' Venice are better.
Never leave home without it!!!.......2001-05-03
I am so happy that I had this book with me when I went abroad. My parents had been given a different tour book, but it was retired during the trip. Italy for Dummies was so simple to use. The maps were accurate and the hotel information priceless. Even if you've been before, this book is a godsend in a pinch. It helped me make great choices during a hectic time in Italy-"Holy Week" A must for any traveller.

London for Dummies.......2007-09-05
Borrowed this from the library and found we couldn't leave home without it, had to buy it! Everything we needed to know to get ready for our stay over the pond. Taking the source with us.
London For Dummies.......2007-08-23
I used this book every day when I was in London. The maps were very helpful.
Worth the purchase.......2007-01-11
I read this book before we left for London and took it with me. Since we were only going to be there from Dec 26 through Jan 1 we wanted to see as much as possible. The maps were a great help in laying out a logical route for each day. Each place we wanted to see had a description, price, hours, and especially the tube stop in the book. We travelled everywhere by tube (London Underground) so there was no guesswork. Buy a day Travelcard for Zone 1 and 2 and you are set. We never found any mistakes in the book. You must see the fireworks from the London Eye on New Year's Eve. We were on the Waterloo Bridge and it was spectacular.
Great travel Book.......2004-01-31
This book is wonderful. My husband and I took this book with us on our trip to London in the fall and it helped us out tremendously. The recommendations for hotels were great as was the information for all the sights to see. It has great information as to the hours and prices of different attractions. I highly recommend this book.
Didn't want anyone to see the title, but..........2003-09-01
...it was VERY helpful. I bought 7 books on travel to England, but the ones I took with me on the trip were London for Dummies and Middleditch's London Mapguide.
The reason: "Dummies" is stuffed with practical nuts-&-bolts information. Not just suggestions of palaces & pubs, but tips on etiquette, taxes, and emergencies, and phone numbers & addresses on nearly every page. Having never been abroad on my own before, I wanted a reference with me that contained all the essential how-to information I needed-- especially on one panic-stricken morning when my credit card wouldn't work! You can believe I was hugging "Dummies" when I found my company's service number in the appendix.
When traveling, you don't want to carry unnecessary weight. Dummies gives you more practical information per oz. than the other books I examined.

Just what I needed.......2007-07-24
This is exactly what I needed before I leave for Europe for the semester. Great book. Excellent quality.
Touring Europe? Great Guide!.......2007-03-01
My husband and I went on a tour of Europe, so most of the work was done for us. This book was a great supplement and had great tips for things to avoid on the tour. It was a quick reference and narrowed down sites to see, so we could make the most of the little time we had in each country. It doesn't seem like it would be enough, though, as your sole guide on Europe, if you're not on a tour.
Title covers it all.......2004-09-04
Europe for Dummies is a perfect book for a first or second time traveler to Europe. In March I went on a trip to four countries in Europe and took three different travel guides with me. Europe for Dummies was used much more than the other two that I had brought, and with justified reasons. A previous reviewer said it was too vague, and although I agree with them in some aspects, Europe for Dummies saved us more time and even money in some cases than I ever expected any of the books to. The descriptions are short and full of information, which is what I want when I am traveling. Detailed maps and directions also hellp make Europe for Dummies a great travel guide. Whether or not you would be buying this book to take with you, or to read it before you go on a trip to Europe, Europe for Dummies is a great source of information to prepare and inform you for the many awesome and surreal sights Europe has to offer. Definitely recomended.
Not the Greatest Travel Guide.......2003-03-01
I tried out this book and found it to be very vague. It tells some of the different types of travel but doesn't give you any specifics. It honestly isn't much help if you are actually planning to go to europe. It also mentions too few different ways that you can stay such as backpacking and such throughout all the different countries. It gave very little info on anything. Then at the end to take up space they rate and give short descriptions of damn near every restaurant in europe. Just to fill up space since this book was just about useless! If I were you I'd skip over this book and find another one that fits your needs the best.
Europe for Dummies.......2001-01-09
This book was very helpful when studying up on Europe. The manner in which it is writing is very entertaining and easy to understand.

Paris For Dummies.......2007-08-23
I just got back from Paris and I used this book everyday. It was very helpful
I Wish I had this book in 1996!.......2007-07-11
I went to Paris, France in 1996. It was a dream come true. I didn't have a guide book of the city and I think this book would have been quite useful if I had to choose about books for Paris, France. One of the American writers, Janet Flanner also known as Genet, wrote from Paris' Hotel Continental for decades. Now that I have this book, I pick it up to look and read about a location, a restaurant, an attraction, etc. What troubled me the most about my trip to Paris was the panhandlers, the homeless children, and the beggars during the hot summertime. I suggest that Paris is not the place to be during a heatwave. Most attractions and Parisian hotels don't have air-conditioning. Maybe that's changed since my last visit. Oh, I yearn to go back again and this book makes me want to go more than ever.
Take It To Paris.......2007-05-19
Excellent, well-written, with a great deal of practical, currrent information , a treasure to take with you to Paris
Keeping up the "Dummies" excellence....!.......2006-12-25
My wife and I (very unitiated to Paris) returned from a beautiful trip there last November -- a large part of that due to this book. Ms. Pientka really tries hard to let you get the well known and not so well known of the city and explains the pros/cons to areas so incredibly well. Other books might have more specifics about attractions, but they won't be as comrpehensive as this one. We loved her restaurant choices (even as Vegeterians she had some places for us!). The book was the basis for our trip and we felt we hit everything we wanted (included an out of the way flea market -- my wife loves going to them here and was excited to learn that one happens on the weekends in Paris). The only cons were that it would have been nice to have metro stops (and lines) listed next to each entry and her hotel list could have been more comprehensive. We booked a hotel on our own (not in her book) and loved it. Whether you are going to be in the City of Lights for a 2-3 days or a month, you will love this book.
Worth it.......2004-05-11
A great all round guide, took the guesswork out of most aspects of the trip. If you take time to read and digest this book, this may be the only reference guide you will ever need (plus a decent map like the Streetwise) -- especially if you are going for the first time. We went to two of the restaurants mentioned in this book and they were both top notch, with excellent food and service (in English) and low prices -- a definite rarity in Paris. That alone paid for the book twice over. Also, the walking guides and tips were very useful in planning our days.
In fact, the only advice in this book that I'd disagree with would be "Tips for dressing" -- I wore ratty jeans with black sneakers all through, even to the decent restaurants, and found to my surprise that so did everyone else. In fact it makes you fit in better with local young and the hip :-)

Excellent, to-the-point advice.......2004-04-16
Don't be put off by the name or techie provenance of the Dummies' guides... this is a great book for tips and overviews. Lots of practical and accessible advice. A good companion to the richly illustrated DK guides.
The only book you need to plan a vacation in Spain.......2002-06-25
This was a great travel book. I chose all of my hotels and restaurants from Spain for Dummies. My family of five went to Spain for 10 days. We went to Seville, San Sabastian, Bilboa (day trip) and Barcelona after reading about each region in this book. Each city gave us a very different flavor of what Spain has to offer. The family friendly icons made it easy to find the items that were most appropiate for us. We followed the recommendations on which small, family run hotels and inns to stay in. They were perfect because they were kid friendly, yet right in the heart of the cities. The restaurants that the Spain for Dummies recommended were excellent (I can't say the same for the hotel conceirge's recommendations). The entertainment sections were also fantastic to guide us to the best bull fight arenas, to great flamenco dancer performances, and to horse shows. Our vacation was a complete success. Now I look for Dummies books for all my travel plans (unfortunately there are not many for Asia yet).

Only a quick intro, and not much help for those who want more.......2007-10-11
I found this book to be a positive introduction to British history. It's challenging to move fast enough to cover such a wide topic while also giving enough detail to make it interesting. This book focuses more on the kings and queens than on the culture of England. What was most striking to me was how thin the bonds of empire can be within the British Isles and how central religion was to defining the nature of Britain. I wanted a little bit more detail on British imperialism. I felt that the last hundred pages or so were rushed. Also, I was annoyed by a lot of parenthetical asides (go back to my first sentence to see the challenge of writing this history, stuff like that). My biggest criticism of this book is that there is no bibliography. Now that I've gotten a quick intro to British history, I'd like to have something in the "Part of 10s" that the Dummies series offers that offers some further reading. I've taken a Complete Idiot's on the History of the Roman Empire, and I'm pleased that there's a bibliography in that book in case I want to read other works on the Romans aimed at a popular audience.
This is a decent book if you're looking to get a quick primer in British history, but I'm sure that there is better stuff out there. Gotta give this 2.5 stars.
Wonderfully entertaining- and you learn something too!.......2007-05-23
I wanted to read a general history of Britain, and that is just what I got. The book takes you from the very beginnings to present day and is a great overview of Britain's history. I really enjoyed reading it. It wasn't dry and boring, but very entertaining while giving you important info. I highly recommend it. In fact, I am ordering US History for Dummies and hope that it is just as good.
Best history book .......2007-05-16
If I had of had this book when in high school, I would have liked history. (History was not my favorite class in those days.)

Informative yet humorous.......2006-11-04
What a wonderful survey course in British History! The author is an authority and provides just the right amount of information for a book "for the rest of us". I was interested in this history because I'm doing genealogy, and my ancestors came over with William the Conqueror and then the Scottish ones were among the Protestants who went and settled in Ulster. I wanted the historical background for this and I got it -- with a lot of humor along the way! This has got to be the first *history* book I've ever read that caused me to laugh out loud while reading!
I highly recommend this to anyone interested in an overview of British history from pre-historic times to the present.
Book Description
A fun, informative guide to Europe’s past and present.
The history of Europe is rich, complex, vibrant, and at times violent; it has influenced many countries throughout the world and has itself been influenced by many countries. In the light-hearted European History For Dummies, historian Sean Lang explores the countries, conflicts, people, institutions, disasters, and triumphs that have helped shape modern-day Europe, packing in tons of facts alongside the fun. Chapters range from "Celts without Kilts" and "What a Way to Run a Republic!" to "I Capture Quite a Few Castles," "Reformation Ruckus," and "The War to End All Wars."
Sean Lang, the author of British History For Dummies (0-7645-7021-8), is also a history lecturer, examiner, and writer.

Making History Interesting!.......2007-05-20
I took AP European History. I used this "for dummies" book in order to prepare myself for the exam. It was one of the few books that I could read without falling asleep. If I would have had this book before I took the class to give myself an idea of where the class was going, I would have saved myself a lot of pain, trouble, and headache.
The most important aspect of this book are the interesting side stories about certain individuals. They make history more personable and sometimes funny.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in a *broad* overview of European History or for someone who is sick of the conventional history books.
