boring.......2007-10-03
I've traveled to about 8 different foreign countries, and always used Lonely Planet. I thought I'd give this a try. It was dull and boring. I'm sticking with Lonely Planet.
Guide book is very useful.......2007-08-04
I have used Frommer's guides in the past and found them reliable. I knew nothing about what to expect in Cancun. The guide had useful general advice about travel in Mexico and currency issues, and it was very informative about cultural attractions. It was a bit light on the coverage of hotels.
Good Information.......2007-06-12
This guide was pretty good. I got it for the Cozumel information. Over half of the guide was for other areas of the Yukatan. The title clearly indicates that, but it would have been nice to see a Cozumel specific guide from Frommers that includes more of the resort/hotels in cozumel.
Another great Travel Book.......2007-05-11
If you know any of Frommer's work, you know what to expect from this book as well. These travel guides are always thorough and as up-to-date as possible with a published book. Don't hesitate to pick this one if you are planning to travel to these areas of Mexico.
Too Old.......2007-04-18
If you are looking for info on hotels and restaraunts - keep looking. This was the least useful of the three books I bought. It is way too out of date. It is useful for things that dont change like day trips and general travel info, but much of that was too generic.

Information not up to date.......2007-03-06
As the previous reviewer said, the book is written as if the devastating hurricane of 2005 never happened, even though it is copyright 2007. We bought it for our trip to Cancun but you cannot use it reliably for hotels, beaches, restaurants, scuba/snorkeling since many of these areas were destroyed.
It is still useful for excursions as these were not as hard hit. By the way, we also had Frommer's Portable Cancun copyright 2006 and it, too, was not updated.
Still helpful, but not a gold standard. Call ahead and look for online blogs/reviews that are more updated.
And quite frankly, shame on Fodor's for publishing something in 2007 that doesn't account for the altering events of 2005.
Maddeningly Out of Date Post Hurricane Wilma - Frommer's Was Much Better Informed!.......2007-03-02
It took a lot of chutzpah to publish this guide without even a cursory fact-checking on the state of Cancun post Hurricane Wilma. Some of the restaurants outlined in the book haven't been open since the hurricane and WON'T be reopening, which any hotel concierge could have told the editors. Furthermore, with beach, diving and snorkeling as key activities of this destination, not including well-researched updates on the main ones post Wilma was irresponsible. Frommer's had much more up-to-date information. (FYI, there's plenty to do in Cancun, and quite a healthy recovery post hurricane - Fodor's just doesn't know what).

Concise and excellent travel guide, helpful for my last trip to the Yucatan.Well done!!
Good maps, but lacks important details.......2006-02-21
This guide misses some of the most interesting places to stay and completely skips the best restaurants, I think. Also, I wanted to know how to get to the ferry for Isla Mujeres from Puerto Morelos. There is only transportation information from the tourist area in Cancun or the airport.
so so guide.......2005-09-26
Got a bit of everything... Not the details on common activities that are actually helpful in deciding trip. Overall, a good start, but will have to get something more detailed to supplement.

metric system.......2006-06-06
I am not sure the person who wrote the chapter on Isla Mujeres is familiar with the metric system. "1 km or 1.6 miles." The back of the book has a conversion chart showing that 1km = .62 miles. They make this conversion mistake all throughout this chapter.
As good as any of the guide books.......2004-06-10
I spent the last three weeks in the Yucatan (and I had a wonderful time!), and found this to be a reliable guide. The rating system is dependable, the maps helpful, and for the most part the info is up to date. I will say this, you might concidering more than one guide book as all of them seem to have some defficincies. This would be most important for the independent travler and the travler who is planning to get away from the major resorts. You might also consider buying good maps. One other thing, Pick up "A Tourist in the Yucatan" Fun thriller!
Don't leave home with out it!.......2004-05-05
Just back from two weeks in Cancun and I found this book to be indespensible! The Maps were very acurate and I found the resturant rating system to be reliable. I can't say much about hotel ratings as I stayed at the same place the entire time. I think it would be hard to find a better all around guide book. Also check out "A Tourist in the Yucatan" fun thriller
Flip through, compare and contrast, and it looks the best.......2004-03-15
So many guidebooks! If you're going to the area, how do you know which to get? I just spent an hour flipping through all of the Cancun/Cozumel/Yucatan books at a local bookstore, and this looks like the best all-around for our trip to Cozumel. So for all you shoppers out there: I haven't been on the trip yet, but for what its worth, an hour of browsing determined this book the winner.
Adequate for your Parents.......2003-07-04
This book is pretty much what you would expect from Frommers. A good book showing what to do, with a certain kind of audience in mind. I would have to say its not for the backpacker type or the budget traveler. But good if you are a don't get your feet wet kind of a person. ....

Very helpful.......2006-11-05
The book does a nice job with breaking out the various destinations and gives a lot of helpful hints. The book also has a lot of space on what not to eat, how to drive, how to get around and other helpful tips. There is so much information to cover, the book could stand to be a little longer.
OK.......2006-03-20
It has a lot about the big places, but nothing about those little places that you just have to find yourself.
The most up to date guide available!.......2005-10-12
After spending ten days in the Yucatan I found this guide to be the most helpful of the three guides I took with me. This is due to the fact that this is a very new publication (fresh off the press!). Lots of good info on what to do and see and where to eat. Made my trip even more memorable then it would have been anyway. The Yucatan is a great vacation adventure, which I highly recommend! I also check out "A Tourist in the Yucatan" great thriller that has become an underground Hit!
Book Description
Combining unique travel choices, outdoor adventures, and little-known locales into guides where vacations meet adventures, each title in the Hidden series also offers readers the comfort of detailed maps, internet information for each listing, author picks, suggested itineraries, and walking and driving tours. While Cancun has transformed from a small fishing village into multi-billion dollar tropical resorts -- and this book does recommend the best of them -- the true focus of this guide are the natural attractions, authentic historical sites, and outdoor activities of the Yucatan peninsula. Because so many of the Yucatan's attractions are obvious (Chitzen Itza's pyramids, the white-sand beaches), the less conspicuous can go unnoticed. For example, less than five percent of the visitors to Cancun make the short journey to the charming colonial capital of Merida. Hidden Cancun and the Yucatan always encourages readers to venture further, offering the descriptions and detailed information that will make them feel comfortable exploring lesser-visited areas. Details on 42 beaches, including 41 with swimming, 18 with snorkeling, 13 with windsurfing, 14 with beach hikes, and 12 with beach camping, are offered.

Library Book.......2005-09-01
The book was stamped by a local library. Condition was average. Delivery was fast.
Great guide book for the adventure minded traveler!.......2004-10-15
This book and "A Tourist in the Yucatan" (cool thriller set in the Yucatan) really made my recent Holiday in Mexico a complete success! I agree with the last reviewer, you don't need this guide book or any other if you don't plan on leaving Cancun, but if you want to see the real Yucatan this book is a great help. Good info on lodging, meals, the locals, the ruin sites. There is so much to do that you will want plane a second trip! I am going back next year!
Read this BEFORE you plan your trip-- not much help after........2004-09-16
The author has some good advice, lots of knowledge, his standards of cleanliness and quality are to be trusted, and seems to really like Mexico in general.
But listen,if you're going to Cancun to drink, lie in the sun, and never leave the grounds of your resort, then you don't need a guidebook, period. Cancun is like Orlando, FL. There is an Outback Steakhouse and a Burger King, for god's sake. The price you pay for this little slice of America is that once you're already in Cancun, it's an ordeal to get away from it. Just checking into a hotel seems like you've signed a contract in blood.
Which is why the author advocates AVOIDING Cancun, renting a car, and checking out the area AROUND Cancun. For this purpose, the book is excellent. Also, it's the kind of book you should read cover to cover before you ever buy a plane ticket or plan your trip. Like i mentioned above, trying to escape Cancun once you've figured out that it sucks is really difficult.
Book Description
Winner, "Best Travel Book," North American Travel Journalists Assoc.
This award-winning guidebook covers many places not even mentioned in competing guides. Take to the mountain trails, swim in hidden cenotes, watch the sun rise on a beach near the ancient Maya port of Pola (where the authors celebrated the dawn of the new millennium). Visit Bohemian Playa del Carmen, or history-rich Cozumel, where the Spanish first set foot on the North American continent.
Customer Reviews:
Almost 5 Stars (I give it a 4.8).......2007-02-11
This is a great guide we have been using now for the last two editions. We have looked at other guides, and so far this one is the most comprehensive for folks who want an unbiased guide to travel and learn the local flavor, locations, and habits of the people of Cancun and the Yucatan. If you are an "all-inclusive" type traveler who stays in one of those mega-resorts, this guide may enable you to see what you are missing by not venturing out on your own outside of the "packaged" trips controlled by the mega-resorts. If it had more information on local shopping areas like Mercado 28, Mercado 23, etc. and more local street restaurants, I would have rated it a 5.
Not so great.......2006-03-29
Might be a great book, but for my purposes (travel from Cancun to Tulum) it really didn't cut it. (1) None of the maps are to scale. Not a big deal, but in some instances towns don't appear to be placed in the correct geographic locations (e.g., shows Playa de Carmen located inland), and in the text the authors sometimes neglect to mention how far the town is from benchmarks (e.g., other towns, kilometer markers). As a result, you will have no idea if you are getting close or still have 20 km to go. In unfamiliar terrain this is somewhat of a big deal ("did we pass it?"). (2) Many of the prices listed in the book are WAY off. Not sure how this could be unless the locals have recently figured out they can charge a lot more. (3) Some of the recommended "budget" or "moderately-priced" hotels were faily sketchy. Personally, I wouldn't recommend a hotel that didn't come with a toilet seat on the toilet, or that provided only one dingy, ripped towell for the shower. Maybe that suits budget travelers, but at $60/night I doubt it.
great comprehensive book of the region.......2006-01-14
We visited the Yucatan area for ~8 days and used this book extensively throughout our trip. This is an excellent guide if you like to do things different than the mainstream. Not surprisingly we got tired of Cancun itself very quickly, with it's Vegas-like atmosphere, crowds and prices. This book was the only reference we needed to visit the surrounding region and provided a great overview of the 'real' Yucatan.
However, the coverage of hotels and restaurants is not comprehensive. The authors only describe the places that where they have actually eaten/stayed, with a lot of personal opinions rather than objective views. Also, they seem to be fixated on bakeries, which was kind of odd.
Overall a great book, but I would suggest to get a complementary guide for the purpose of food/lodging.
Helped make our Cancun vacation great!.......2005-08-19
I spent a week in Cancun last year and this was the only guidebook I took with me. The best part about this book is that it highlights some more out of the way sites and things to see and do. I also appreciated the section on car rental since we did end up renting one to see some of the aforementioned out of the way sites (Tulum and Aktun Chen - which, if you are planning a trip to the Yucatan, are must-see sites).
The dining recommendations were spot on. We ate at several of the reviewed restaurants and were very happy. When I didn't follow their recommendations, I was a bit disappointed (they were right and I didn't listen).
If you want a Mexican vacation where you sun yourself on a beach and want some upscale dining and hotel recommendations, this book might not be for you. However, if you want to stay busy every day with exciting things to do and interesting sites to see, this book will surely help you on your adventure.
La Ruta de Conord: the essential 2ndary guide book.......2005-08-18
With such an extensive selection of travel guides for the "horn" of Mexico, including Quintana Roo (East-Caribbean), Yucatan (North-interior), and Campeche (West-Gulf of Mexico), the selection for THE travel guide to these regions is not obvious. Lonely Planet, Moon, Fodors, Frommers, and Eyewitness are just a few of the more widely known and popular. Conord's Adventure Guide Series "The Yucatan, Cancun & Cozumel" opened a doorway I would have missed had I relied upon these other venerable guides. Bruce and June Conord leave the main roads and La Cuota behind to explore the regions surrounding Cancun, Valladolid & Chichen Itza, Merida, the Maya, Church, and Convent routes (La Rutas Maya, Iglesia, y Convento) and many other fascinating locales.
A quick glance at this Adventure Series guide reveals a plethora of adventure and culture awaiting any traveler willing to get off the main tourist road/La Cuota and experience El Mexico tipico, the real Mexico. Whether you wish to know of the magnificent cenotes (sinkholes) hidden just off the highways awaiting you with their cool blue waters, or the quaint little thatch-roofed restaurants visited by ex-pats and locals, Spanish colonial Haciendas built to amaze and pamper travelers, ancient villages nestled in the Puuc hills near Uxmal, this guide is the key to these unseen treasures you simply will not find in many of the guides listed above. Yes, Lonely Planet or the Moon Guide can point you in the right direction for a nifty little hostel overlooking the main plaza in Merida (as do the Conords), but they lack some of the insight and author's tips that can come only from personal relationships with many owners/proprietors and locals who live in the area. The Conords offer not just the obvious choice of where to stay or eat; by providing insider tips and offering both the good and bad, they provide a perspective that seems to be spoken from the locals themselves.
Guides such as Fodors and Frommers excel in rating and testing hotels, restaurants, and shopping. In truth, the Adventure Series Guide can not compete with such thoroughness. Yet much is left out by these other popular guides that Conords shine so brightly in documenting and elaborating upon. Author's notes, historical backgrounds, quotations, and contact information abound in the Adventure Series Guide. Fodors offers only its few top choices for bungalows and hotels along the popular Boca Paila Road near Tulum. The Conords review almost every establishment in either direction of the road near the Tulum crossroads. Lacking its own rating system, Adventure Series Guide works well in conjunction with these other narrow yet precise travel guides.
The authors' strength lies not in sheer quantity, but by giving enough choices and explaining how things truly function and are accessed in each area. Other guides can be limiting in the offerings of only the "safe" bets. Safe does not always equate to adventure and "an experience" that many of us want in a vacation. With over 400 pages of easy to read descriptions, suggestions, Maya history & vocabulary, witty anecdotes, and ample coverage of Cancun, Playa D.C., Isla Mujeres, and Cozumel in addition to off-the-beaten-path, a traveler who takes this guide to the horn of Mexico is sure to find their own unique adventure.

Customer Reviews:
Very beautiful and helpful.......2006-02-12
This book has disucssions and beautiful color illustrations of not just birds, but frogs, snakes, fish, mammals and even some plants. There are discussions of different ecosystmes and what one might expect to encounter in each of them. There are notes on local bird lore. I took this on a guided boat tour run by one of the local people. It was extremely helpful to have the names of the birds in English AND Spanish, as the other people in the boat spoke only Spanish and the guide used mostly Spanish. The book is written from the standpoint of the Eco-Tourist. The author discusses some of the important conservation efforts in progress to preserve these beautiful and unique ecosystems.
Of course the book is not exhaustive, but fortunate is the traveller who sees all the species discussed here. In addition the book is actually quite readable and while in Yucatan, this was the guide that I frequently picked to review what I had seen or what I might be seeing on my next excursion. There are many different habitats in this part of Mexico, each with its own inhabitants. The book contains a wealth of information presented in an entertaining manner. I checked in several local bookstores, and could find nothing comperable, in English or Spanish. Although it may not satisfy the ardent birder, the book helps one feel at home when he is encountering so many new species.
Inaccurate and misleading.......2003-06-07
I can appreciate the author's intent - to create a more comprehensive guide to the wildlife of a region that is sorely lacking in accesible information. It is a pioneering effort, and I am grateful that such guides are being attempted. But after reviewing the bird plates I became quite upset - this guide will lead to many misidentifications due to innacurate portrayals and information, as well as omissions. While I can understand the impossibility of covering all the living species in a large and diverse region, it would be nice if the ones chosen were depicted accurately, and reference was made to similar species occuring within other parts of the covered range. For just one example, plate 45 shows four species of Motmot as being the ame size and shape, when the Tody Motmot is HALF the size (and a very different shape) of the others. While this is indicated (in small print), anyone relying on the pictures could easily become confused. Beletsky list Howell's excellent "Guide to the Birds of Mexico and Northern Central America" in his references, but he clearly should have been paying more attention! As to omissions, if an abbreviated list is desired in the interest of keeping this book accesible for the more casual enthusiast, it would have been far better to at least focus on the species most likely to be encountered. While some rarely seen species are included, many quite visible and common birds are left out! And how could Beletsky leave out the Boat-billed Heron? Not only is this species an icon amongst Mexican birds, but it is a favorite species for boat tour operators on both coasts to find for visitors! After seeing what the bird plates are like, how could I ever feel positive about identifying other wildlife using this book?
On the positive side, I will reiterate that I am glad that such books are being written. There is often no information available (in practical form) on tropical reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, etc. But I hope guides like this will get a whole lot better! Skimping on information for portability is not the answer. Accuracy should be far more important. In Beletsky's favor are the habitat photos, and coverage of ecotourism and conservation issues.
Excellent!.......2000-04-08
Simply, a terrific wildlife guide and the best of its kind for Mexico. Chapters provided detailed information (with photos!) of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals found in southern Mexico. Recommeneded for any serious student of biology or dedicated eco traveler.

A good second book.......2000-07-11
A friend and I travelled in Yucatan last year with this book and the Lonely Planet "Ruta Maya" guide. LP was better for the basic information and town maps but the Adventure Guide had waaaaay more detail on little places that turned out to be a real treat. We would never have gone swimming in the Cenote at Motul with LP, or had about the best meal of our whole stay at the palapa restaurant above -- the town isn't even on the map in LP. No one book can do everything for you, but this one combined with another, such as LP or Rough Guides Mexico, will really help you get around. I'm looking forward to their new edition.
Great all around tour book about Yucatan.......2000-01-09
This is a great all around tour book of the Yucatan but I would not call it an adventure book. It has the usual tour information of the Fodor's and Frommer's style with only a few actual "adventures" mentioned. The biggest flaw to this book is that sites and museums opening/closing times as well as prices are sometimes omitted or out-of-date. However, the helpful hints, humor, and narative qualities do make an enjoyable read and worth buying if you plan to visit the area. Not many pictures are included and they are all black & white.
Very Useful--And a Good Read!.......1999-07-17
I have taken several trips to the Yucatan, and I found this book to be accurate, up-to-date and an all-around good read! I must say, however, that, although it provides quite a bit of information on "adventure travel," it is more of an all-around guidebook (the authors make it clear that they want to provide information for those travelers who may be making their first visit and for whom just being in the Yucatan is an adventure).
Terrific.......1999-03-03
(From Planeta magazine): Highly-recommended guidebook to this fascinating corner of Mexico, which the authors describe as a land mass resembling "a big hitch-hiking thumb." Their interest and hard work has paid off. It's loaded with hotel and transportation info, great maps and interesting art work.
A very useful and enjoyable book, well worth it!.......1999-01-22
We were nervous about our first time traveling in the Yucatan but having this book was like having a real live guide in the backseat pointing us to all the best places to stay and eat, and not the glitzy tourists traps either. We saved ourselves lots of time and money and got to see places and things that few other tourists find. Plus the funny quotes scattered throughout made it fun to read as well. Kudos all around for a great guidebook.
