4 out of 5 stars Good info.......2007-07-04

Should have spent more time reading the book before the trip. Some helpful preparation tips. Had some great info and descriptions. The book is separated into geographic regions. If you are headed to a small town (as we were) it is more difficult to figure out which part of the book to refer to. Great for bigger cities and tourist destinations.

Another great book with up to date and pertinent travel information that I just recently used

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2005-02-28

This was one of the worst travel guides I have ever purchases. I though so much of this book I placed it where it belongs, in the trash can. If you want a real travel guide purchase DK eyewitness travel guides.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent information on summer activities re:opera.......1999-02-15

My daughter will be in Gratz,Austria for 6 weeks this summer at the AIMS School for opera. Since I will be visiting I decided to buy your guide to Austria. It has everything you could want to know and more. We lived in Europe for 3 years and it is exciting to go back. The "getting around" section is great as is the information on Music (Mozart etc). I was really excited about the summer music festival in Salzburg. I bought your book on Panama when I visited and it certainly made for a much easier and more interesting trip with your guide. The AIMS school is something your future readers may be interested in-it is a summer program for singers on the road to a career and they have programs on weekends throughout summer. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to seeing Austria.......2006-02-10

Excellent guide to seeing Austria from behind the wheel.
This review is for the 1st edition, 2004 printing.

Excellent guide to seeing Austria with a sports car or an RV. You will enjoy some great driving tours and routes through this historical region of Central Europe.

Frommers has recently come out with more "Best-Loved Driving Tours" series ... guides that are not very inexpensive, but are very well researched and quite comprehensive. One will have plenty of driving tours and routes to chose from, whether you like arts and museums, scenic roads and breathtaking views, urban towns and shopping, or just want to experience a regione's culture and life.

Unlike the other Frommer guides that are fatter and heavier, this little book gives you not too many specifics on lodging or eating. It is geared strictly for the person behind the wheel and her or his passengers.

I have had a great experience using this guide and will recommend it to anyone who can afford it. Also, you might want to check to see if your library carries it and check it out for the duration of your visit abroad.

When I backpacked 4 months through Europe I had a copy of the Lonely Planet for Europe (a thick and heavy book) because it covered more cities and esoteric towns, a ripped chapters of all the international youth hostals Europe of the countries I visited, and as primary guide for nominal cities and capitals I used Frommers (ripped the book and kept only chapters of countries planning to visit - so I can keep the weight down).

City of music, cafes, waltzes, parks, pastries, and baroque architecture, Vienna became a showplace city under the Hapsburgs- and unlike many European capitals, managed to retain its landmarks through two world wars. Frommer's offers detailed, complete coverage of all the highlights. Rely on us for indepth reviews of attractions and museums, the best accommodations for every taste and budget, the lowdown on the dining and cafe scene, a complete shopper's guide, the best of the performing arts, and more- including side trips to nearby Danube River towns and Lake Neusiedl resorts.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed Frommers Fan.......2007-09-18

We have a shelf of Frommer guides, US cities, Canada, Mexico, Europe & Asia. This was the first bomb. I found it totally useless and not up to the quality I expect from Frommer. Since it was the only guide to Vienna we had with us I feel my vacation was negatively impacted by it. After this experience I will not automatically purchase the Frommer.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book For Vienna.......2006-09-05

Just got back from a weekend drive to Vienna. There is a ton of usefull info in this book. I wish there was a fold out map covering all of Vienna though. (Our hotel gave us one for free). I can't speak for the Hotel recomendations but the restaurant picks were solid. For like 16 Euro you can get a 72hr public transit pass. This pass also gets you museum discounts and freebies at seletcted restaurants.

2 out of 5 stars Any other guide would be a better choice.......2005-06-19

Chose this guidebook over others as much to check out the Frommer's style as to get travel info. Normally I am a Lonely Planet guy, but since I was staying with friends didn't need a lot of in depth descriptions of logistics (lodging, travel etc.). Just looking for a description of some of the attractions.

I found the guide difficult to use. Although I didn't need much in the way of logistical support, there was really very little. There were only about 4 maps in the whole book and they were spaced out all over the place. Virtually no information on specifics for those arriving overland. Worse, the descriptions of the attractions any sense of enthusiasm. Normally when I read a guidebook, I get the sense that sites are over-hyped, but this book almost made me want to skip the city altogether.

I have found Frommers on-line a good source of info and reviews but won't be buying another of their guidebooks in the future.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for all Vienna Travellers!.......2000-07-28

This book was so great for our Vienna trip! We were the most well-prepared travellers for this city, which cut out plenty of stress, and allowed us to really enjoy our Vienna experience!

Natalie Kruger and Marc Llewellyn are native Australians. They both live in Sydney, and they're both veteran travel writers. And this serves them well, for their goal is ambitious. It's no small task to provide detailed and accurate information on lodgings, restaurants, and activities throughout a continent that spans some 2,400 miles from Shark Bay to the Sunshine Coast, and 1,600 miles from Darwin to Kangaroo Island--a chunk of land roughly the size of all of western Europe or the contiguous 48 states of the U.S. To do so and aim for a budget of $50 a day is a feat comparable to crossing the outback by foot. Yet they do it, and they do it admirably well. They know where to stay and where to eat, where to snorkel and where to view wildlife, where to repose on a beach and where to experience Aboriginal culture. They explain Australian history, culture, food, and nightlife, and they describe what to expect from the big city versus the small town. In addition, Kruger and Llewellyn provide all sorts of tips for saving money and include more luxurious options as well. The result is an entertaining, knowledgeable, reliable guide--one that makes a lot accessible to many for not that much. --Stephanie Gold

5 out of 5 stars Practical, excellent guide - worth every penny.......2002-09-07

I actually bought 4 different guide books to plan my trip Down Under. I ditched 3 of them almost immediately because Frommer's format was easier to read and locating appropriate information quicker. The advice on suggested tours was especially accurate; the boxed information warrants a second (or third) look - Frommer's never steered us in the wrong direction. Take the price information with a grain of salt as seasoned travelers know that pricing can and will fluctuate.

Don't buy any other guides - relax and enjoy your trip. Aussies are the most laid-back, patient crowd on the planet. It's an amazing country!

5 out of 5 stars All You Could Want.......2001-05-11

Our group of six friends just returned from a two week trip to Australia. We did much planning ahead of time using this guide. It was so helpful that even our travel agent was impressed with the information we could give her about our plans to travel by plane, car, and train. Information about each of the cities we visited was right on the money. We stayed in some of the hotels recommended and ate at some of the restaurants. With the information we had ahead of time, our trip went very smoothly. Practically everytime anyone had a question regarding just about anything in the area we were visiting, I just grabbed the book and had the answer.

2 out of 5 stars Good concept but it didn't deliver.......2000-10-27

I went to Australia this summer (or their winter), and I took this book along with me. I read the book on the plane, and it seeemed helpful, but once I got there, I realized the book was lacking. First off - a lot of the places that were discussed in the book (specifically hotel rooms) were grossly misquoted on price. Secondly, the section on Melbourne (where I spent most of my time) I felt was inaccurate and the listing for hotels was extremely small. And the places listed were not very good places either in that they were either too small (and required MONTHS of advanced booking) or were too expensive for the average traveller. I found the Lonely Planet Guide to be much better and more helpful, giving the reader a more objective view of available hotels and eateries. I found a dozen or so inexpensive places to stay and eat that should have made the book. Even the Sydney section (where I also spent some time) was not very good, and the book was too Sydney-centric to be of much use to someone moving about the country. It's obvious that the writers of the book couldn't see beyond Sydney and New South Wales. Hopefully future additions will be more balanced.

My life partner and I found Frommer's Australia powerful...entralling...a ferociously well-paced entertainment! We found ourselves knee deep in quicksand and this book, I kid you not, saved our skins. I mean literally! But all in all we found it a smart, craftsman-like, viscerally compelling guide, eh.
