Great Book!.......2005-04-22
This book is another great in the series of A Baffled Parent's Guide. These books are thorough and complete - a coach's bible, especially a new coach. The book covers everything from basics of the game to working with the children and dealing with the parents. I highly recommend books from this series.
good book for beginning coaches.......2002-06-23
I have yet to coach a girls' softball team, but I am really interested in doing it. This book has some great advice on how to handle beginner players and their parents. The thing about this book that I found great was that it told you some characteristics to look for when selecting a pitcher, something that I would not have had a clue about doing. Highly recommended.
Excellent for beginner or experienced coach.......2002-05-11
This is an AMAZING book! Even if you have never coached, played, or even heard of softball, it helps you out. It breaks every aspect of the game down and puts it in simple terms so you can explain it to your team. It gives you practice advice and schedules as well as drills you can use for team members to improve, or establish, softball skills. It also gives you advice on how to become the best coach, dealing with gender issues and how to handle difficult parents. This book is a MUST for EVERY coach!
Excellent Coaching Book for New Coaches.......2001-04-28
I am not a parent but nonetheless, this book is excellent! This book gets right down to the heart of coaching. It tells you step by step how to teach someone how to throw, catch, pitch, hit and play every position. It also tells you what type of girl would be good for positions of pitchers and catchers which is important since most girls at this age have no experience in many positions. The drills have diagrams and there is glossary in the back to help with the terminology. There are not that many good softball coaching books (believe me I've looked), so grab this one!

Soccer drills found here.......2007-09-24
My wife bought this for her youth boys soccer team and found it to be very helpful in setting up drills to keep the boys busy and learning. She played soccer through highschool and still found the pages to be full of helpful ideas.
Worth the price.
Excellent coaching primer for all levels of youth soccer.......2007-09-12
I received a copy of this book as part of a U6/U8 coaching clinic that I attended last fall. The instructor had a lot of praise for the text, and incorporated a lot of the coaching philosophy and the drills into his presentation.
The book is full of good, common-sense coaching advice that's particularly useful for the novice coach, although I think that even seasoned coaches will find some great ideas here.
I've used quite a few of the activities in my practices, and they really do work quite well. The backbone of each and every one of these drills is that they get ALL of your kids involved in practicing. There is nothing here that puts your athletes in enthusiasm-sapping and attention-deficit producing lines. Every drill is carefully designed to keep your kids moving and learning at all times.
The text is clear and well-written and the pictures and illustrations do a good job of supporting the activities. Overall, it's very well-done. I've been coaching for 6 seasons now, and I really wish that I had discovered this book sooner.
Highly recommened, especially for new youth soccer coaches.
Wonderful even for seasoned coaches.......2007-09-06
I've been coaching for at least five years now and this book has some really fantastic drills in it. My under 11 team was cracking up while working hard and that is the best thing to see. This is an especially great book for working with children even younger. I'm enjoying all the drills.
Just Get It.......2007-09-05
I have been coaching youth soccer for about 5 years now after having played from age 4-18. This book truly helped my practices become more fun, developmental and organized for the kids. I love the section that has pre-set practices for different skill sets.
Couldn't be better!.......2007-08-13
I've been coaching my sons team for 2 years now. Under 8, Under 10 and getting ready to begin our 2nd Under 10 season. This book is essential to my success as a coach! Wonderful drills and skill builders that are broken down by skill type and age group. Great directions and diagrams. My favorite part of the book is the way it teaches you how to make a soccer practice plan for each practice. You can pick and choose the drills and games you like in order to customize your practices the way you see fit. This is a great book for any soccer coach. Learn to maximize each and every minute of practice while your players have a blast and actually learn something too!
Book Description
Former Sports Illustrated senior writer Tim Crothers took a year off to write a book; that year became a five-year odyssey chronicling one of the most successful coaches in the history of sports.
The Man Watching reveals, for the first time, the story of the man, Anson Dorrance, who built the University of North Carolina soccer program that Sports Illustrated hailed in 2003 as "The Greatest College Sports Dynasty Ever." Dorrance, in 2004, was named one of the top 25 coaches of the past 25 years by an expert panel at ESPN.

A Fascinating Journey Inside the Life of the Man Who Watched.......2007-09-27
I've been a college coach my entire life working with male and female athletes at the Division One level. Over a 30 year career I've read many many books on leadership, motivation, management and relationship building. Walk into any book store- there's thousands of them.
This book stands apart in my mind as one of the best simply because it takes you inside the UNC program that Dorrance built and shares his thoughts, observations, beliefs and practices. What is so powerful about the man and the story is the simple things he values most and how he reinforces them over and over within his teams daily regimen.
If you coach college sports at any level, this is a valuable read. If you coach female athletes at any level, especially high school or collegiate, this is a must read.
No two people ever think alike and Anson's style is unique to him. But the lessons that any leader can take from this book will be well worth the time spent. There are certain universal truths that all coaches have to come to grips with if they hope to be successful. It's clear from the beginning to the end of this read, that Anson's ability to grasp these truths and consistently weave them into his daily life lessons to his players is what sets him and the UNC program apart. His style may not appeal to everyone, his approach may not be your cup of tea, but it's hard to read this well written book and not come away with a sense of admiration for way he molds his athletes into champions.
This book is well worth reading and for anyone in the coaching profession, it will force you to re-evaluate how you approach your mission.
Would recommend it more for a player than a coach.......2007-07-05
As a previous review noted the first half of the book, which dwells on the coaches life, is much more of a "biography" than the second half.
The second half is more of a description of the "feel" of the UNC program, which based on the writing, seems authentic.
The programs description doesn't really add much to the biography unless you have an opinion about the UNC program.
The rituals and idiosyncracies of the program are no more interesting or poignant than any other D1 successful sports program.
I believe this book, through its many quotes and reprinted letters, gives a sense of what the emotions of college soccer are like for the athletes. As a coach of male and female soccer players, I would recommend it for female players who wonder what college soccer is like. Of course, any fan of the UNC girls program would find this an inspiring read since it holds true to the title and praises the program at length.
Parts are excellent; skim the over-the-top parts.......2007-04-26
The biography of Coach Anson Dorrance of UNC should appeal to soccer fans and coaches. As a general biography, I wouldn't recommend it, because the focus is clearly on soccer and not much else outside of the game, the Tar Heels, and Dorrance's personal life and family. The bigger view of the context in the greater world is mostly limited to some general trends, such as the rise of women's sports from virtually nothing to their much stronger state today.
The historical background was easily the most interesting part, and the first half of the book is much stronger than the second. Coach Dorrance's background as a child of the world and an aggressive, competitive youth was surprisingly engaging. Even better was the origin of women's varsity soccer at UNC and elsewhere as women's soccer germinated to a critical mass within American colleges. Similarly, the creation of the women's national team with early stars such as Michelle Akers and its evolution into a dominant power with and without Coach Dorrance was also very informative. Tim Crothers has added a valuable historical record by capturing these stories with factual reporting and extensive interviews.
Coach Dorrance is of course famous for the exceptional success of the program at UNC, and the Heels even won the next national championship after the book was published. The author draws out Dorrance's coaching philosophy, recruiting style, motivational approaches, and other aspects of his personality and performance. The various "aha!" moments where Dorrance learned to appreciate and exploit the differences between men and women have been fodder for stories and lectures for many years, and they make for excellent material and opportunities to compare with our own observations and attitudes.
What got a little tiresome was the volume of material on how competitive Dorrance is and how great Carolina is and how special Carolina is, almost as if other teams don't have their own special bonds among teammates or play with intense effort and dedication. I ended up skimming a bunch of that as too much rah-rah and of little additional value. Fortunately, Crothers added a chapter on Dorrance's "dark side", such as his arrogance. Some juicy, bitchy stories can make up for an excess on the praise side.
Crothers naturally had to cover the lawsuit. Based on the tone of the book, I surmise that the author has put the whole situation in a relatively positive view. Debbie Keller isn't exactly presented as sweetness and light. However, on the contrary side, the author reviews Dorrance's admitted mistakes, his agreement to training, his change in approach, and some remarks by people who were at least neutral on the whole matter. I'm not sure what to think, and the reader can still gather a lot from the biography if the lawsuit is secondary to one's interest in the book.
Be a Better Leader.......2007-04-12
Gain inspiration for leadership in this well-written autobiography. Find your own style and develop yourself personally while you become a better leader.
The Man Watching: A Biography of Anson Dorrance.......2007-03-29
If you coach or play any sport, want to improve your leadership capability, or just enjoy a well written biography, The "Man Watching" is an inspirational must read. The "dynasty" in women's soccer at UNC did not happen by accident and, other than the way Anson got the job, the architect, contrary to the title, was not "unlikely". Tim Crothers, in a very entertaining style, aptly dissects Anson's personality, coaching style, and leadership theories, using words from Anson's former players, colleagues, friends, enemies, opposing coaches and from Anson himself. The book almost reads like a mystery novel as you wonder how the women's soccer program at UNC could consistently attract and produce world class athletes, winning game after game, year after year, with different players, a small budget, and the primary constant being Anson Dorrance and his staff. Having coached soccer for about 17 years, the feat seems impossible until you read the book and the mystery is slowly unraveled.

Coaching advise from athletic coaches.......2007-06-27
A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

Helpful.......2006-11-12
I bought this for my daughter who volunteered to be Soccer Coach for the first time. I say she wanted to do it but perhaps was more stong armed into doing it. She found it helpful.
coaching soccer-a baffled parents guide.......2006-11-03
The book gave very helpful information. I have never coached anything and it gave helpful insight into giving the best experience I can into my son's 4 yr old soccer team.
Great Book!.......2006-08-12
I'm a second year coach with very limited playing experience. I played soccer during elementary school but it was essentially mob ball. This book has helped a great deal. It gives great suggestions for organizing practices and the drills, ahem I mean games, are great. The problem, analysis, solution section is also very helpful.
Wonderful! Highly Recommended!.......2005-11-24
This book helped organize my practices and provided ideas for drills that kept my U8 Boys team interested the entire season. I received numerous compliments from parents that their kids enjoyed the variety of "games" (i.e. drills) we played in practice. My team went 11-2 this past season and all my players chose to return for the spring season over baseball and other sports. I honestly feel this book improved my coaching style and played a large part in the success of our team.
extremely helpful.......2005-09-07
I am coaching my daughter's U-8 AYSO soccer team this season and was in desperate need of an easy overview of rules as well as age and skill appropriate drills for practices. This book was very helpful and I am using it as a resource.
Book Description
In this long overdue book, Critchell addresses the issue of stretching and warm up practices for soccer. The main focus of the book is to discourage the use of static stretching and instead offer a variety of dynamic exercises which more closely resemble the movements made in the game, giving the players the preparation they need either pre-game or pre-practice.
Customer Reviews:
Good Stuff!.......2006-06-21
A super book for coaches who want to incorporate dynamic warm-ups/stretching into their teams training sessions and pre-game routine. Explanations are solid and easy to understand. As a coach of thirteen years I even found some terrific new warm-up exercises and games to use with my teams. Highly recommended especially for those who still believe that static stretching is still O.K. and anyone else who wants to leaern about proper warming up.
Outstanding.......2005-02-18
Really an outstanding book. It made me as a coach review how I approached warm-ups. I had always had the team go through traditional warm-ups; running the width of the field a couple of times, stretch and then small games of keep-away. Now, after reading this book that will all change. Dynamic stretching, varying the warm-up games etc... it is all covered in this book very well. Highly recommended for all coaches.

good book.......2007-01-11
A very good book. Could use some more illustrations and it would be a 5 star book. Still highly recommended.
Good drills, light on pictures/graphics.......2005-11-14
The list of drills are comprehensive, meets the needs of every position, and are well organized. The graphics are poor, and there are no support pictures. If this book is updated with better graphics, I would highly recommend.
Good comprehensive book........2005-08-12
I liked this book very much. For anybody that wants a solid knowledge of how to coach any position, this book is a must have. I found the drills to be very well drawn and easy to understand. I would definitely recommend this book.
Must have for ALL coaches.......2004-05-22
This drill book is one of the best out there!
A must have for ALL coaches at any level.
It covers all the fundamentals and more.
Great for first coaches or review for experienced!
All positions covered. Worth re-reading over and over.
Not Much to Talk About.......2002-06-26
It is hard to review something you paid for yet never received. I am sure the book will be very useful if I ever receive it. I oredered it on May 9th and today is June 25th. Thank educational_book_brokers for being so prompt in sending me the book I wanted, ordered, paid for, and never received. Also thank you not responding to the two previous e-mails. Yes sir, I now have a great testimony about buying books on the web.
Book Description
Aimed primarily at intermediate and advanced coaches, this book examines the principle formations used in modern soccer and the need to fully understand them all of one is to adapt to game situations using counter-active tactics. The author discusses such offensive topics as support, width, penetration, mobility and improvisation. Defensively, Chapters include: Three Man Defense, Four Man Defense, One Forward System, Two Forward System, and Three Forward System. Well organized and clearly written, this is an outstanding coaching book.

Holistic overview of the basics.......2007-08-08
Great book for covering all the major issues of attacking and defending. If you want to know where your defenders or forwards should position to maximize their position, this is a great book. There are many simple basic diagrams that are uncluttered, showing just the players involved in the play and this is a plus for sharing information with your players!
The book does not cover any drills for achieving these desired results, but I consider it a must read for the coach considering the 4-4-2, 4-3-3, or 3-5-2 formations.
Buy with confidence, this book will refresh your positioning and playing coaching skills as well as providing a way to copy handouts for your players from the many diagrams this book provides!
Formation Strategies.......2000-07-02
As stated on the back cover, this book is "aimed primarily at intermediate and advanced coaches" and "examines the principle formations used in modern soccer..." It states these formations clearly (along with diagrams) and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each. It is a great resource for the coach who is looking to develop the appropriate offensive and defensive systems. The book does not cover other issues such as team management or practice drills. Look elsewhere for that.

David Beckham skills.......2007-05-08
It is a nice book. But I was more expecting a chance on his expertise on running drills for kids to get better. It is more of a fan book. Sort of an autobiography.

Soccer continues to grow in popularity in the United States, with another huge surge thanks to the U.S. Women's Team winning the World Cup in 1999. But players can only be as good as their coaches, and coaches are always looking for help. Soccer: How to Play the Game contains detailed information on necessary skills, from basics like dribbling the ball and throw-ins to advanced skills like sliding tackles and goalkeeping. Each is presented separately, with photographs and drawings of a player executing the skill, advice on how to perform it and when to use it, and most common mistakes. Over 100 practice games, coded for different player ages and levels of instruction, are also outlined to help players develop their technique. Throughout the book, the authors stress the need to create a positive environment in practice and encourage creativity as well as technical correctness. Most importantly, the authors understand that kids are not just small adults--and they back up their understanding with advice on how to help kids fall in love with "the beautiful game." Coaching Book.......2007-05-13
GREAT book. I love it. Very helpful, even during the middle of practice, I can run over and look up something the team needs to work on.
A good book!.......2004-05-08
How to play soccer is a good book. It teaches most of basic techniques separately, like dribling, heading goalkeeping. But it does not teaches exercises to achieve strength, speed and agility. It is good for coaches who want to train their team to better football. It may not be as good for players who are learning individually.
WATCH OUT!.......2003-01-23
There are many errors of technique taught here (for example, goalie hand positions). Not a good book.
It's nice but..........2003-01-03
If you're looking for a coaching book, this is very good, but there are better. For instance - any title by Joe Luxbacher.
Could be a good deal better.......2001-11-02
A tip of the hat to the coaches and officials who tried to put into one volume a basic overview of the game, its rules, tactics, and suggested drills. This large-format paperback, on heavy stock with very clear reproduction, is a quality product. However-- it doesn't work very well. The organization of the material is clumsy and the chosen method of presenting diagrams and figures was conceived by an art director with immortality in mind, and maybe he will be plaing chess with Beethoven in heaven but here on earth I can't bloody stand looking at the frozen plasticized figurines used to illustrate basic soccer technique and positions. Apparently the current thinking in book design is to dispense with headlines and subheads, so as to cause readers to wander aimlessly through the pages looking for "Rule 7" or "How to play center mid". I have had the book six months, read it cover to cover, and subsequently consulted it two dozen times and I am here to say, alas, it achieves approximately 44 percent of its potential, which is far short of enough. Yet what is the alternative? The goal: a primer for Norteamericano parents who never played soccer and want to help teach their kids, walk the walk, talk the talk, and --look out--someday be able to fullfil the role of linesman without having bananas thrown at them. If there is a better book out there, somebody please list it in a review. Meantime, this one is not a disaster, but don;t get your hopes up.
