5 out of 5 stars When you need to know how to teach pitching..........2007-04-03

When my son turned 9, and was going into kid-pitch for the first time, he thought he wanted to be a pitcher. What did I know about pitching? Not much. Randy Voorhees...if you read this...thank you.

This book let me turn a scrawny kid into not just a pitcher, but a closer. The drills in the book are simple to follow, and backed by intelligent explanations of WHY they work. By breaking the pitching motion down into a series of simple, understandable steps, my son and I worked together to build a delivery that focused on accuracy and control, not brute power and speed.

By the middle of his second season in kid pitch, he knew if he got the nod in the 4th inning, that it was his job to hold the lead...and he never failed. By learning to have control and accuracy, my son never worried about his ability...he simply learned to focus on each pitch, one at a time. He learned that with only modest speed and good movement on his pitches, he could beat 85% of the hitters on strikes, 10% on contact ground balls and pop-ups, and 5% of the kids were going to make good contact NO MATTER WHAT...and that's what fielders are for.

Why so much about my kid? Well, there's no better testimonial about a book than the great results achieved by following the advice therein.

Randy Voorhees...my son and I thank you for two great years in kid pitch, and two "World Series" trophies on my son's wall as proof of your program.

Book Description

How does Nolan Ryan still do it?

At 43 years old, Nolan Ryan is a marvel. He is still blowing his fastballs by hitters at an age when most pitchers have long since retired -- or have learned to depend on guile instead of power. But the Ryan express keeps chugging on, getting more unhittable, not less.

Nolan Ryan's Pitcher's Bible tells us the secrets of Ryan's success. Drawing on Ryan's practical experience and Tom House's research expertise, it shows how the right combination of exercise and motivation can help a pitcher develop to his greatest potential.

Nolan Ryan's Pitcher's Bible includes:

* Nolan Ryan's complete fitness program for pitchers -- including weight training, aerobic exercise, and diet -- based on the latest scientific research and his 24 years of experience as a major leaguer.

* The most up-to-date methods for preventing arm injuries by establishing proper mechanics, a conditioning base, and throwing work loads.

* A timetable for keeping a pitcher in top shape year-round, including specific exercise intervals to meet the individual strength demands of each pitcher's throwing motion, maximum velocity, and maximum weekly number of pitches.

* An in-depth presentation of Ryan's pitching strategy -- how he prepares himself mentally for a game, an analysis of his pitch selection for different types of hitters, and how he applies his training regimen to improving his effectiveness on the mound.

Illustrated with black-and-white photos of Ryan in action, along with photos and line drawings of the recommended exercises, Nolan Ryan's Pitcher's Bible is the ultimate book on pitching, by the ultimate pitcher.

5 out of 5 stars Pitcher's Bible.......2007-06-02

This book is great...whether you're just starting to pitch or have been pitching for years, the information in this book is some of the most useful I've read.

3 out of 5 stars Geared for younger pitchers.......2007-03-01

This book isn't as "bad" as some of the other reviewers have suggested. Leave your expectations at the door: You're not going to be able to pitch like Nolan Ryan after thumbing through this book. It's not meant for upper-level pitchers. It's geared toward younger players - Little Leaguers and high schoolers. It's an easy read and it's very approachable (a good mix of pics and text). These are plusses in my book!

2 out of 5 stars Not much on pitching!!!!!.......2006-10-02

Well this was a severe disappointment. I was expecting some insight on his mechanics, going into grave detail... The information on pitching form was extremely generic and repetitive. There is absolutely no unique insight that you couldn't get from using an internet search engine. It all comes down to this: keep your weight back during the leg kick (don't move forward), and then have a controlled fall towards the plate. Thats about it. Chapter 1 was fluff about his career and Ryan's various coaches, chapter 2 was mostly fluff about mental attitude, and chapter 3 was the only instruction on how to properly throw the baseball.

The rest of the chapters were just an "introduction to weight lifting and stretching". Chapter after chapter of what weights to lift, and how to lift them. Don't get me wrong, it isn't bad weight training information... but there are far better weight training books out there and the excercises are not really unique to baseball or pitching. Generic normal excercises, like the ones you'd find in any weight training book (there are only so many ways you can lift a dumbell).

I was looking to the book for some deeper insight into mechanics, and maybe some more illustration of ryans form. I wanted to dissect his delivery, and see how his pitching style differed from my own. The book did not deliver.

To those other reviews that claim conditioning is the reason ryan was so successful... I'd say you are partially right. Conditioning is important. Its also very basic. I don't need a book telling me how to do squats or shoulder presses. The act of throwing the baseball, on the other hand, is extremely complicated. This is where you need the most information...

This is not an "ultimate guide" to anything. I wouldn't even reccomend this book to a novice since its so incredibly vague that the information probably wouldn't be clear to them. There are several superior *free* resources on the internet that can be found using your favorite search engine. Some come equipped with free videos and all.

Bottom line: this book was a waste of time

4 out of 5 stars Good Tips and Easy to implement.......2005-10-01

So far I has seen improvement from 3 of my players.
Book was simple to follow and so far I have been able to use it as a guide with my pitchers.
Next step is to see if the results last all season.

2 out of 5 stars No Meat.......2002-11-08

This book was casual to read, flip through, but did nor have any real information that would help a pitcher. It did have a big name in the title.

Book Description

Using 21st century information and technology, noted author, researcher, and former MLB pitcher and coach Tom House answers the question "What is a good pitching delivery?" In this amazing resource, House and co-author Paul Reddick address conventional wisdom and misinformation of pitching, present the "five absolutes" of pitching a baseball, and present detailed deliveries (including extraordinary photographic analysis) of the 25 best pitchers of the recent past, present, and future. House and Reddick also show how the five absolutes work for each pitcher—despite their stylistic differences. Over 125 photographs and illustrations.

With Tom Houses'instructions, you can't miss teaching youngsters the proper way of pitching a baseball.

5 out of 5 stars CONCENTRATED PITCHING MECHANICS INFORMATION.......2005-10-06

Tom House has managed to condense the essentials of a good pitching delivery into a highly readable book. We use it for pitcher instruction because a picture is indeed worth a thousand words. The discussions dealing with conventional wisdom are also very, very interesting and will definitely light up any cocktail party in which baseball fans are present. This book is highly recommended when used in conjunction with other teaching materials such as Dick Mills DVDs et al.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on pitching mechanics ever.......2003-05-11

If you were only to invest in only one book on pitching mechanics this would have to be it. It is a perfect balance of hi-tech computer based biomechanical research and utter simplicity. Rather than blind you with science, you get visual illustrations of what you need to do to achieve perfect mechanics. Each carefully chosen picture is worth a thousand words.

I have no higher praise of this book, which balances complexity with simplicity, and explodes countless pitching mechanic myths perpetuated like old wive's tales by countless generations of coaches.

I thought I had seen and heard it all when it comes to coaching ideas on pitching mechanics (including biomechanics-research based stuff from both America and Japan) but this book was simply a revelation in the way it condensed extraordinarily complex biomechanical concepts into little take-home nutshells of wisdom.

This one is a MUST!!!

Is pitching an art or a science? Judging by all of the technical manuals on the subject, pitching seems to be an exact science. Lee Mazzone, pitching coach for the Atlanta Braves, disagrees: "Why turn something as basic as throwing a baseball into a science project?" Successful pitching isn't easy, but it is simple. The secret? Pitch every day--but regulate your intensity.

In this slender but informative volume, Mazzone describes throwing programs, pitching strategies, and conditioning for pitchers from Little Leaguers up through high school. Over 60 photographs of Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, and other Braves illustrate pitching motion and various grips, while a special section on fielding for pitchers describes drills to keep hurlers in top form for bunts, covering first base, and setting up double plays. Though some of the conditioning and pitching drills seem impractical for the youngest players, coaches and older hurlers will find much useful information here. --M. Stein

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars pitch...a lot.......2002-10-15

Pitch a lot is the message of this book. OK, Leo has made his point, but if you accept that there's not much else this book has to offer. I was hoping for a bit more insight and didn't get it here.

4 out of 5 stars A common sense approach.......2002-10-02

Don't let the refreshing lack of complexity fool you. This book provides sound, common sense advice in easy to understand language. Many books on pitching advocate a "cloning approach" to a pitcher's delivery. Other books on pitching drills are confusing and overly technical. As Leo puts it, "Why turn throwing a baseball into a science project?" I got away from attempting to perfect my son's wind-up and delivery after reading this book. As long as the delivery is sound, I really don't think it matters exactly where you break your hands, how far away from the body the hands are when they break, exactly where the glove hand is when this is happening, etc, etc. If you find that other books are confusing you, how confused do you think your youngster is? Give Leo's approach a try.

5 out of 5 stars A good introduction to pitching skills and throwing programs.......2000-06-22

Reasons to buy this book include: a) its emphasis on THROWING b) the simple presentation of proper technique c) throwing schedules and pitcher checkpoints d) the emphasis on supervision of the pitchers while they throw

This book is not so much about techniques as it is about a developing a philosophy concerning the training and conditioning of pitchers. As Mazzone points out, all the technique in the world is of no use if the pitcher can't go to the post when he is scheduled to. This book is not all inclusive concerning pitching, but how many books are? There is valuable information in this book, and coaches everywhere who are interested in getting the most from the arms on their staff should take the time to read it.

1 out of 5 stars A Pitching Balk! - Not a Book!.......2000-05-29

I bought this book with a leap faith, believing that since it had been authored by one of the most capable, recognizable pitching coaches for the most pre-emininent pitching staffs in all of baseball, it couldn't help but be great. t's full of "Glavine does this, "What Maddux as he..." and "Smoltz is great when he...". The book is of little use for coaches of little league teams who wish to impart valuable information to their players or correct pitching flaws. Maybe coaching the Braves pitchers is the easiest job in baseball because you don't have to tell those players anything at all. Personally, as a coach, I've read quite a few books on the subject and view a number of videos. For step by step, clear instruction, I've found, essentially without exception the best to be ones produced by coaches of little league, high school or college instructors. This book is not for you if you're looking to be helpful to kids with pitching problems and questions. By buying on a leap of faith, I violated one of literature's oldest axioms; you can't tell a book by looking at the cover.

5 out of 5 stars Great information and tips for all ages.......1999-09-01

Teaches you the different grips, the proper way to the the different pitches, different exercizes, when and how to rest, and much much more all in only 112 pages with pictures on most of them

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars for the older pitcher.......2007-05-15

This is a good supplemental handbook for the pitching coach who works with older, high-school and college pitchers. It has good drills and theory for younger pitchers, but the scheduling/daily menus toward the back are a little much for a little-leaguer.

5 out of 5 stars The Smart Way to Train.......2006-04-04

To really appreciate the programs outlined in this book, you must be committed to them, as they can become quite time consuming. It makes the most sense for pitchers already competing at some level, so they can complement their pitching with the exercise routine, which will allow them to last longer and perform better. The in depth workouts really allow the player to appreciate all of the important factors that influence pitching ability. Altogether, the exercises promote good mechanics, isolate important muscles, and allow the pitcher to think about the pitching motion while working out. By dedicating oneself to such a nuanced program, a pitcher can gain not only physically but also mentally, as this book promotes smart pitching.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Healthy Arms and Extreme Velocity.......1999-10-09

The book profiles workouts and exercises for players ages 13 and beyond. The book goes into extreme detail on muscle regeneration verse pitching and workouts between pitching dates. This is a must if you want to stay healthy and get the most out of your body.

Coaching Pitchers is a complete coach's guide to pitching for youth, junior high, high school, and college baseball. Written by a nationally recognized collegiate coach who has coached three teams to NCAA playoffs and who has sent 37 pitchers on to play professionally, this book covers the mechanical, physical, and mental aspects of pitching. Coaching psychology and strategy are also discussed in detail to help you produce successful pitchers and prepare them for successful careers.

In this second edition, Joe "Spanky" McFarland builds upon the principles presented in his first edition. He includes an all-new organization, 240 accurately detailed illustrations, and substantially expanded and updated chapters on

    • fitness training;
    • proper mechanics--footwork, hip rotation, stride, arm motion;
    • appropriate pitches for each age level;
    • strategy; and
    • defensive responsibilities.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Include this in your pitching library.......2004-07-08

McFarland has created a single source reference for aspiring pitchers. Much of what is in the book is part and parcel of years of baseball acumen. There is game situation, training, defensive, and mechanical advice in this book. At the very end there is motivational tips for getting the most from your pitchers. This book would have benefited from clear pictures of the motions of the pitchers and of the throwing motions on the various pitches. The drawings are vague enough to invite too many interpretations and the complex motion of pitching is difficult to describe verbally. I do not agree with the prior reviewer that House has totally eclipsed the valuable information found here.

I especially valued the advice about pitch selection based on a hitter's weaknesses. McFarland describes more than 20 batting habits that can be exploited by the pitcher. Additionally he diagrams where the pitcher should locate defensively on throws from the outfield or after pick off throws. All very helpful for the young pitcher.

5 out of 5 stars Fundamentaly sound pitching instruction!.......2000-06-09

Coaching Pitchers is well written, easy to read and understand, and provides a wealth of how to teach your pitchers the proper fundamentals of pitching. This book is well worth the price and needs to be read by EVERY youth coach. The techniques, drills and suggestions are well documented with illustrations and diagrams. If you only buy one book this year, get this one!

    4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2000-04-02

Nicely layed out and a great guide for developing young pitchers from 8 year-olds through high school.

5 out of 5 stars As good a book on pitching as there is.......1999-02-21

This is as good an introduction to the art of pitching as there is. Simple but not simplistic with excellent illustrations. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars The most ingenious book ever devised for coaches/pitchers........1999-01-10

Spanky MacFarland has devised an excellent book for secondary level coaches and players. While this book emphasizes techniques and drills directed more toward older players (teenagers or older), it also provides the most mechanically sound, descriptive, and understandable information I have yet to see for this subject. Excellent sketches show proper techniques and motions to eliminate the ambiguity of text-only documentation. I advise any upper-level coach or player to purchase this book.

        Product Description

Baseball has long been considered a game of individual skills with much less emphasis on teamwork than other team oriented sports such as football and basketball. However, there are many occasions in baseball when teamwork is necessary, but no teamwork is more important or carries more impact than that of the pitcher and catcher. This team must function as a cohesive unit in order to experience total team success. This book has been developed to provide an insight into pitching and catching for players wanting to master the positions and for coaches who want to become better teachers of the positions. It is particularly designed for those players and coaches who do not have a strong background in the art of pitching and catching but have the desire to understand appropriate pitching and catching skills. The photographs provide excellent images of what is being described in the chapters.
