Customer Reviews:
Mountaineering Book for more than just Mountaineers.......2003-07-22
I bought this book to plan a week-long backpacking trip. It is very similar in concept to Secor's "High Sierra" guide for CA's Sierra Nevada: Adequate description of the trails and off-trail passes, and comprehensive information for climbers on about everything climbable. I am not a technical climber and cannot judge the book's usefulness as a real "climbing guide", but I like to take off-trail excursions, shortcuts, and scrambles. Together with the "Earthwalk" topos (which are excellent) this book was just the right thing for planning a backpacking trip with "side adventures". If you stay strictly on the trail, you might find a pure trail guide more useful, as trail descriptions only make up 10 or 20% of the text. Off-trail travel turned out to be easy in the Wind Rivers, though.
The book has a short and very interesting account of the history of Wind River exploration.
Awesome guide for the experienced mountaineer.......2002-08-08
This book outlines hundreds of different routes up all of the Wind's well-known peaks (as well as several not-so-well-know ones). He did a phenomenal job amassing all of this information. There is enough here for a short lifetime of awesome mountain trekking.
The information Kelsey gives is mean, lean, and straight to the point. Novices beware, this book makes no attempts to come down to anyone's level. It is written for those grounded in that arts of route-finding, technical climbing, and alpine survival. It is not a hiking book. If you are uncomfortable with this, either buy a more toned-down Wind River guide, or pick up a book to build your skills like "Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills" and start psyching yourself up for some world class backcountry.
A must for the Wind River hiker and mountaineer.......1998-06-07
Joe Kelsey has taken the old trail book of Finis Mitchell's and turned it into a Trail and Mountain Guide that leads you to every nook and crany, you would want to go.
Many years before Joe's book, I would hike the Winds with Mitchells book in hand as if I was following an old adventurers pencil notebook. Today, Joe Kelsey's "Wind River Hiking/Climbing Guide" is as necessary as the matches.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent trail book.......2007-10-09
This book covers only Grand Teton Nat'l Park, which is great beacuse most trail books throw GTNP in with Yellowstone trail books and those never seem to give the attention GTNP deserves. I have vacationed and hiked GTNP several times over the past ten years and purchased more than a few of these books looking for details on the longer hikes while being mindful of the abilities of my children (pre-teen and early teen). This book allows you to plan for both. The author provides elevation profiles for each hike as well as the usual distance and difficulty rating. Like most people, the ratings are always a bit hard to match with one's ability and stamina. The elevation profiles give you a real sense of what you're in for! In addition, each hike is described to you in detail: what you experience, what you'll see, what to watch for, how much time the hike will take, and offer some options for shorter or longer combined hikes. Excellent! If I had to recommend only one of the dozen or so that I have read about GTNP, this would definitely be the one!
Best all-around guide for hiking the Tetons.......2004-10-27
This guide lists 35 trails, organized by region. Unlike (say) the Yellowstone guide it does not sort the trails into short, medium, and long hikes. Like other Falcon guides, it provides maps of each trail and valuable information about elevations and steepness. Each listing include elevation diagrams that are very useful for letting you know what you are getting yourself into.
This is probably the best all-around guide to hiking the Grand Tetons. It's especially useful for finding good hikes while sitting at home. Bill Schneider writes well and does a good job describing the hikes so that you can decide which ones are best for you. Like other Falcon guides it has a chart listing best flat terrain day hike, best wildlife viewing, most strenuous, best scenery, and so on.
Pretty good overview of the Teons.......2004-09-07
This book gives a pretty good summary of the hiking trails in Grand Teton National Park. My one complaint would be regarding the trail for Granite Canyon/Rendevous mountains (Chapter 3). The elevation map showed the trail being flat at the end. You actually ascend a bit at the end. I wish I had known that before because I was pretty tired at the end. Other than that, I found the book accurate, and a a great guide to hiking in the area.
Hiking Grand Teton National Park.......2002-07-14
Having read this book and just spent a week using it in hiking in the Tetons, I found it generally useful and accurate. The maps and directions for finding trailheads are good, and the mileage counter provided gives a good indication of progress on the walks. I would make several recommendations for changes, however. First, I disagree with the level of difficulty ranking for some of the trails. For instance, the Amphitheater Lake trail is clearly more strenuous and difficult than the Holly Lake trail. Second, there should be numerical figure giving the actual elevation gain in addition to the useful elevation profile graph. Finally, the book did not include the excellent Hanging Canyon trail, which though unmaintained, is still a great climb. I found the book Day Hiking Grand Teton National Park by Tom Carter to be equally useful and much more packable based on its small size.

Customer Reviews:
Good Hiking guide for Families.......2006-06-28
We just got back from our trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. This and Frommer's Guide to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons were the books we took with us.
We found this book to be right on target with each of the hikes we took. We appricated the overviews and descriptions of each of the hikes.
Traveling with small children can be a challenge, but this book did a good job at helping us choose which hikes would be enjoyed by all of us. I like how they had a chart of which hikes are good for animal sightings, which for historical value and which for exceptional beauty.
I was a bit disappointed that it didn't cover more aspects of each of the parks and things to do. Though it mentioned such things as horseback riding or rafting, it didn't offer any insight into what would be seen on a rafting trip or riding in the grand canyon of Yellowstone vs. in Roosevelt Lodge (for example). It stuck basically to the hiking trails, which was fine, but the title of the book would be more accurately called, "Hiking With The Family in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons".
I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a good over-all hiking reference for the parks (you certainly don't need kids to appriciate it). It was easy to read, easily formated and easy to throw in a backpack.
Outdoor family guide better.......2006-06-13
I was using an "Outdoor Family Guide to Yellowstone National Park" and "Top Trails" and I found Outdoor Family Guide to be much more up to date. Several of the trail guides in "Top Trails" were outdated when I actually arrived at the park. After several days in and around the park, my family and I left "Top Trails" in the car and only used the "Outdoor Family Guide." The family guide also proved more inclusive for other outdoor activities besides just hiking. It's a great all around book!
"Top Trails" book is better.......2006-03-08
I purchased this book as well as Top Trails' "Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park" by Andrew Dean Nystrom, and was disappointed with "Family Guide" as compared with "Top Trails". As I am using these books to plan a family vacation, I am especially interested in finding child-friendly hikes. The "Top Trails" book provides a good summary of the hikes (mileage, difficulty, terrain, and activities) at the beginning of the book, an overview missing from "Family Guide".

Hiking August 17 - 22 - 2005.......2005-08-25
I just completed a six day haike in Soutghern Wind River area and I found the book Hiking Wyoming's Wind River Range very informative prior to making the hike. However, it could be more complete as to the various hikes and it needs some update in regard to the tails that i took. I will at a later date give my comments in more detail
Hiking Guide Review.......2005-07-22
This guide was a good introduction to a new hiking area for us. The trails were well described and easy to follow and the prose was useful in suggesting the prominent features of each hike.
Detailed trail descriptions, but poor maps, no index.......2003-06-26
This is a frustrating book to use although the meat of it---the trail descriptions and stats---is very detailed and well written. The lack of an index, or any way to use all the maps together, and the fact that the maps are very incomplete, make it very annoying to use. Add to this that there is an almost explicit LACK of information or routes for any of the peaks, and one wonders why one bought the book at all. There is no route to the top of Square Top Peak, nor over Dinwoody Pass, or up to Gannett. Even the non-technical peaks are omitted. There is also no "About the Author" section (although it says that there is one), and this is important when one is going to rely on him to guide you into the Wind River Range.
The most complete descriptions of Wind River trails.......2002-05-03
The most complete descriptions of Wind River trails are in this book. Each trail is characterized as to its length, difficulty, and traffic volume. An elevation profile for each trail is provided as well as brief descriptions of key points along the trail and their mileage points. There are detailed driving instructions to each trailhead. There is also a fairly lengthy narrative regarding the topography of each trail. Additionally, each trail is numbered and it is fairly easy to use the maps in the book to string trails together to design a multi-day backpacking trip. The book is 262 pages long and is one the Falcon guide series. Other features of the book include brief sections on the history, vegetation, wildlife, and geology of the Wind River Mountains. There is information about US Forest Service Wilderness Regulations, and since part of the Wind River Mountains are contained in the Wind River Indian Reservation, there is information about that, too. To round things out there is a backcountry checklist (what to take), information about hiking with children, and information on zero impact camping. Drawbacks include the lack of an index, the lack of a bibliography and little, if any, information about off-trail hiking.
If you plan to hike in the Wind Rivers on established trails and you don't mind the absence of an index, then this is book is excellent.
well written but poorly lay out. No index or cross reference.......1998-06-27
The author does a very good jop at trail discriptions and gives a good feel for the lay of the land. How ever the guide would benifit greatly with better maps, specifically a much more detailed overview map which shows the major peaks and their relationship to the trials dicussed. An index with the trials and peaks that is cross referenced would make it much easier to plan trips. The author should take a look at the AMC White Mt guide book, the bench mark for all guide books. This book did not met my expectations and I am looking into others.

Customer Reviews:
innacurate. outdated, and misleading.......2007-08-13
Our first "easy" day hike was supposed to be a 3.5 mile round trip hike to Fairy Falls. Following the trail head and directions in this book, my young daughters and I ended up on an eight plus mile adventure. Fortunately we had plenty of water, but it could have been disastrous. We showed the book to a couple of rangers who said the directions were flat-out wrong. The maps were small, smudged, and unreadable.
Good guide for short but fun hikes.......2007-01-13
My family and I used several of the hikes in this book on our trip to Yellowstone this summer. We are not an "active" family so the "easy" part of the day hikes were very appealing. The author outlines some very fun hikes and short trails that lead to truly breathtaking scenery. It was a great asset in planning our trip as well as a handy trail guide once we were at the park. The hikes are rated by difficulty level and length and are divided by sections of the park for easy planning and reference.
THIS BOOK IS DANGEROUS.......2002-08-22
CAUTION! The maps in this book are terrible! You can almost read them in some areas but many spots are too dark gray to be legible.
The maps look like a bad black and white photo copy of a good color coded National Geographic map. The book's maps loose information because of the colored background in the original map.
We went on a trail walk (to fairy falls in Yellowstone) using only this book. We walked for about 1 hour then came to a junction in the trail which we couldn't figure out. As we were looking at the book another family came along and showed us they had the same book. We both were lost!
After a while using another map they had we came to the conclusion that were were about 5 miles from were we wanted to be. So we laughed and started heading back to the car.
On our way back we ran into another family using this same book heading for the same place. Obviously it was not just one's person's interpretation of the book.
I'm disappointed that we wasted about 2 1/2 hours but more importantly, it could have been dangerous had any of these families continued on their path using this book!
Compact thorough guide.......2001-08-06
This book was small enough to fit in a day-pack, but contained a lot of useful hiking information. It ranked the hikes on difficulty as well as letting you know how gratifying they were. It was nice to know what to expect along the way, and what to look forward to.
Great Info and Easy to use.......2000-07-07
This is the perfect book if you are new to Yellowstone and looking for a guide on what hikes to take the family on. Accurate reviews of the hikes with good directions and maps.
A must have.
I personally have over 125 days in the park and I found the book very helpfull in planning family hikes.

A must-have guide for hiking trips in the Grand Tetons.......1999-09-18
Small and light (great for backpackers) cheap (great for everyone) and best of all, it gives what the title says. A great day-hiking guide for the park, offering some of the lore and background history of the Tetons, information concerning the park's geology, biotic communities, native wildlife and weather conditions. You'll never find a book on the subject that gives you more (or even close to as much) for such a low price. Can't be beat--a must for anyone planning a trip to the Grand Tetons.

Great book!!.......2006-08-05
I bought this book as a last minute item before our trip to the Grand Tetons. We traveled with our 7 and 10 year old children. We had the best family vacation and I contribute much of that to this guide. Each day we explored a new place and we were never disappointed. On our last full day in Wyoming, we found String Lake and it was breathtaking. After that find, none of us wanted to go back home. The author's description of every trail turned out to be true. We loved it. We didn't get through half of the trails we wanted to see so next year we will return with this trusty book in hand and continue to explore this beautiful part of our country. If you want to hike with your kids, this book is worth the money!
An on the money, great family planner.......1998-08-01
This book was the most well used and helpful of the several that we took along on our Teton vacation. It was absolutely exact in everything from its trail descriptions, to which forks to take for what results, to whether or not insects would bother us on a particular hike. We used it daily to plan our upcoming adventures. I appreciate having a hiking book geared toward young families, and this one surely enabled us to enjoy many great and unforgetable hiking experiences with our 3 children. I love the off the beaten path and hidden places that the author so expertly describes. Many times we felt that we were the only people in the park.

Good begining reference.......2001-05-07
Good hiking reference if you're new to the BH and hiking in general. I've found the ratings to be more for beginners or folks without a lot of hiking skill (ie. a moderate trail listed as strenuous). Good to get you oriented to the area.
