Copper overload is an insidious but increasingly common nutritional problem, says Ann Louise Gittleman, author of the bestselling Beyond Pritikin. She says that difficulty getting out of bed, midday slumps, mood swings, insomnia, and anxiety may be symptoms of a copper/zinc imbalance. She discovered this link after she encountered several patients in her nutritional practice--most of them women--who were not suffering from hypothyroidism, adrenal problems, or anemia (as she had suspected), but rather a mineral imbalance that was diagnosed after simple hair testing.

Vegetarian diets, low-fat diets, and taking multivitamins--all ostensibly healthy moves--can make you more susceptible to copper overload. So do less-healthy activities, including drinking alcohol and coffee, taking cortisone, and being constantly stressed. (These activities sap the body of zinc, says Gittleman, jeopardizing the delicate zinc/copper homeostasis in the body.) Home tap water may also be overloaded with copper, and women are susceptible to absorbing copper from intrauterine devices.

To remedy the overload, Gittleman outlines an easy plan for renewing health and increasing energy. She includes a questionnaire to help determine if copper overload may be a problem for you; gives resources for hair analysis in case your doctor doesn't have one; instructs on how to read a tissue-analysis report; and outlines a sensible diet plan, including menus to keep the zinc/copper balance in check.

Up to 80 percent of the general population complains about fatigue; Gittleman's book may very well offer a simple solution for thousands of people. --Erica Jorgensen

Book Description

"This may well be a seminal book--a courageous eye-opener that could fundamentally alter our approach to the treatment of chronic fatigue."
-- From the foreword by Michael Rosenbaum, M.D.

Answering the question on the minds of 75 percent of Americans, Why Am I Always So Tired?, leading nutritionist Ann Louise Gittleman shows us how we canbe more alert and active by eliminating excess copper in our diets and increasing our zinc intake. The time-tested formula points out which culprits steal energyfrom us--namely trendy, low-fat diets--that make otherwise healthy people feel drained.

This revolutionary book offers Gittleman's insights into how we can modify our diets and lifestyles to increase our energy and prevail over the chronic fatigue thatplagues us with symptoms such as: anxiety, insomnia, skin problems, frequentcolds, and roller-coaster emotions. Using her research and breakthroughfindings, Gittleman helps us eliminate these problems and access the energywe didn't know we had.

Now I know exactly what my health problems have been for over 20 years....copper! Very informative read and very interesting. Definately recommend this book for anyone to read.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, an answer to my problems!!!.......2003-03-31

After suffering for many years from acne, dry skin, hair falling out, anxiety disorders, occasional insomnia and hormonal problems like bad pms, I have finally found what the causes of all these problems were; Copper toxicity! After reading Gittleman's book, I had a hair mineral analysis done and my copper levels were 5 times the normal limit! I have been following the advice in this book for 3 months and I feel like a totally new person. A very overlooked problem that could be the cause of many health problems especially for women. Go buy the book!

5 out of 5 stars Combat CFS & Fibromyalgia--Read this book..........2002-09-15

To Melissa Diane Smith and Others....

This was an exceptional book! What you have written makes so much sense that anyone complaining of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia would be wise to buy this book and read it. I am a certified physician assistant and a candidate for the doctor of naturopathy degree for healthcare professionals and I have referred several people to this book, Syndrome X and Going Against the Grain.

I think that all three of these books feed on each other and would be quite helpful to anyone, not only people suffering from chronic diseases.

These books give options for self-improvement without the use of multiple medications. The American people of today need to take a closer look at their treatment plans and get back to basics and fundamentals of natural health.

The medications and foods we eat are our biggest problems and these three books address those problems and methods of correcting them that are essentially easy, but will take determinated and an adjustment of will power....

Thank you to the writers for giving us such eye-opening books in an easy-to-read format.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2002-07-21

Love her! Copper overload will not be everyone's reason for fatigue, of course, but it's possibly true for many people. She explains why the copper/zinc becomes imbalanced and what to do about it. My hair analysis of 8 years ago showed this syndrome, but no one knew what it meant. In fact, it was not considered "abnormal" nor did it merit any red flag whatsoever. I'm feeling better since implementing Gittleman's advice. Easy to do on your own. Copper can be like a toxic heavy metal for some of us. I'm less anxious, noticeably more relaxed. This was great just in itself, even if the fatigue does not improve (but it has, slightly, too). If you think this could be you--Try it!

4 out of 5 stars Worth spending a few coppers on... (sorry, couldn't resist).......2000-11-16

In this book, Ms. Gittleman suggests that excess copper is a common cause of fatigue and other chronic health problems, especially among women. Many popular foods, such as tea, nuts, beans, avocados and whole wheat, are high in copper. Even if we don't consume excess amounts, other factors (including stress and the Pill) can cause it to build up in our tissues instead of being excreted.

It's true that the author doesn't have a lot of evidence from peer-reviewed medical journals. Still, the idea makes sense, and her profile of the typical person with excess copper, especially the "physically tired/mentally overactive" part, describes me quite well. It also describes a good friend of mine to a 'T'. (She even has the characteristic orangish hair color.) I can't say I'm a true believer, but I figure it can't hurt, so I might as well try it. The suggested eating plan seems healthy and simple enough, and the optional supplements - B6, C, zinc, manganese - aren't expensive or dangerous.

I agree with some other reviewers that this book is a bit light on content: it's less than 150 pages, with a fair number of anecdotes and some repetition. Also, the useful material is scattered all over the book; an index would be greatly appreciated. But if it works, it will be well worth the price.

Book Description

After knocking on the door for decades, Germany's Porsche finally stepped into the big time of international auto racing with its Type 917 in 1969. Its phenomenal air-cooled flat-12 engine powered the 917 to 15 wins in world sports-car championship races from 1969 to 1971, after which it was outlawed by a rules change. Included were two wins at Le Mans in 1970 and '71. First built in a series of 25 coupes that Volkswagen chief Ferdinand Piech called the biggest risk he's ever taken in business, the 917 was raced in both short- and long-tailed forms, pumping out 630 bhp by 1971. It went on to even greater glory in turbocharged roadster form in Can-Am racing as the 917/10, series champion in 1972. In '73 the incredible 1,000-horsepower 917/30 Porsche dominated the Can-Am series in the hands of Mark Donohue, who called it "the perfect racing car". The 917 stands proud in Porsche's history as the costly and daring machine that decisively ended the company's underdog status in international motor sport.

4 out of 5 stars Porsche 917: Zuffenhausen's Le Mans and Can-Am Champion.......2007-02-06

This is a nicely produced, 125 page book, which would be a nice addition to any 917 library. It is not long on written detail, but there is enough to tell the story of the car's history from the original 917 to the 917-30. It is all black and white except for the excellent picture on the cover. Most of the pictures are new to me. Good pictures of the flat 12 engine and other parts. The story, mostly in picture captions, covers the 917 from its original form, through the 917-K and 917-L to the spyders and eventually the Can-Am 917-10 and 917-30. A highly recommended book.

2 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing 917 history.......2007-01-20

Karl Ludvigsen's latest work isn't terribly impressive. After a mere three pages of text, are a hundred-twenty odd pages of photographs of 917s, some new, many familiar. And not one of them, save the cover is in color. Any reader interested in the Porsche 917 would be better advised to try Peter Morgan's book instead. It is full of color, specifications, text, race results, and driver impressions; in short, all that is lacking in Mr. Ludvigsen's.

    Book Description

Jane Haynes worked as an actress at the Royal Court Theatre. After she met R.D. Laing and read The Divided Self she gave up the theatre and became involved with Laing's work at Kinglsey Hall. She trained as a Jungian psychoanalyst. Haynes has moved away from the position of psychoanalyst to a psychotherapist who considers that it is the combination of dialogue - within an ethical therapeutic relationship - and a trained ear that are the essential ingredients of 'The Talking Cure'. The consulting room is a space where, to borrow from John Donne, 'souls negotiate'. A space in which secrets can be spoken and where they feel the first shock of light and air. The force for change that is unleashed in the consulting room is not a one-way process; the wise therapist changes too, and Jane Haynes shows how this happens. There is nothing formulaic about the dialogue she holds with her patients, and nothing doctrinaire.

    Book Description

A paperback reissue of the original hardbound version of the same title (original ISBN 0-7603-0508-0), this outstanding photo history chronicles the achievements of the Chaparral team, with a focus on the incredibly innovative cars developed primarily by Chaparral co-owner Jim Hall. This book covers Halls personal racing efforts and the success of other outstanding drivers he put in his cars, from the 1950s through the ultimate Can-Am monster, the Chaparral 2J sucker car, which was built for the 1970 season. Friedman was the ultimate insider and this book is filled with his I was there photography that takes readers onto the tracks, into the pits, and inside the Chaparral race shops. It is filled with anecdotes from Hall (who wrote the foreword) and many of his drivers, including Roger Penske, Phil Hill, Sam Posey, and others.

Being a child of the sixties and growing up as a fan of sports car racing during that era, this book truly brings the personal side of Jim Hall and his Chaparrals to the fore-front. Jim Freidman does an exceptional job in his writing as well as candid photography of the racing team during that glorious period. With quotes from Hap Sharp, Phil Hill, Roger Penske, as well as scores of other great drivers, the reader becomes a part of racing history we will never see again.
Thank you Jim Hall for sharing your memories!

I've read a lot of books on how to lose weight. This is the first one that deals with the underlying emotional issues and not just controling the food. As a health care professional, I highl recommend this book.

    5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2007-10-04

This book has had a life changing effect on me. I am so glad I bought it.

    5 out of 5 stars More than just a weight-loss book!.......2007-08-17

There are SO many books on this subject to choose from. If I had to choose just one, this would be it. It comes from a very loving place and offers some very real advice about why you are overweight and some real suggestions about what you can do about it. It goes deep at times, but once you realize that the outside is just a symptom, you can start focusing on what really matters and make changes that will last. The author suggests that you eat when you are hungry and stop when you're full, from -2 to 2 on a scale from -10 to 10 (so about every 2 or 3 hours). She encourages you to really pay attention to your body because it will let you know what it wants and needs. She asks you to commit to exercising at least 3 times a week for 5 minutes, and not eating or doing anything else to avoid your feelings. She wants her clients and readers to work with their bodies and no longer against them. It sounds simple, and it is, it's just that the whole subject has gotten so complicated we feel that there needs to be an elaborate answer. Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the book:
~"We have been trained not to waste food in the garbage, but to waste it on our bodies. Either way it is wasted. In one way, we just carry the waste with us."
~"Fat is merely tissue, stored potential energy."
****~If you believe that you will always be overweight, it will be very difficult to lose weight permanently. Beliefs and reality like to be reflective of each other. When reality starts to contradict a belief, a tension is created in our life and this tension makes us uncomfortable...At this point, we have two choices to reduce the tension: change the belief system or change the reality...to sabotage our reality and gain our weight back in order to be back in line with what we believe...It's not until we get hold of the belief and change it that we find any permanent weight-loss results."****
This would explain why most "diets" fail, because they are just treating the symptom and not the underlying problem.
This book is amazing and it was a total surprise, since I stumbled on it "accidentally." It works from the inside out, which is the best way to go about a permanent change. There are a lot of great exercises and suggestions. It was definitely worth my time and money, and I've already made a lot of the changes suggested in this book, and I feel more in control of my life and healthier already. A paradigm shift and a Fabulous book! =)

    5 out of 5 stars Very pleased.......2007-08-06

I almost cancelled my order for this book because I was very skeptical but I am so glad I received this book! I read over the entire book in a weekend and now re-reading it and doing the exercises. The exercises are an important part of the book. This is not just a book you should read but also need to work through the worksheets she includes. I've been overweight my entire life and for me this is the best book I've followed for losing weight. I do think this is a lot more than just about weight loss. By following the book will find greater joy in life. A lot of the info in the book can be used by everyone, not just those trying to lose weight. Highly recommend. Wish this book had been written 25 years ago!

    4 out of 5 stars A happy surprise.......2007-07-04

I have to admit I was skeptical, but this book does a great job of explaining eating in a healthy way. Forget trying to remember the proper portion size, because the way Castillo does it is way more simple and more attuned to your body. I go back to this book when I find myself starting to overeat or craving unhealthy food. It was definately worth the purchase!

This book is one of those "must-haves" for dyed-in-the-wool racing fans. I will always love the Can-Am series, and this book brings it to life, in vivid detail (nearly 40 years later).

5 out of 5 stars My Kind of Book!.......2000-09-09

Besides the hundreds of wonderful photographs, Pete Lyons has put together a delightful, insiteful, and informative collection of history, anecdotes, interviews, and technical details. Mr. Lyons has made a great contribution to the history of motorsport by commiting to print these interviews with the giants of the sport. His reporting is very up close and personal and imparts a rich human element to those heady days of thunder.

I give five stars for content, but only about three stars for publishing quality. Certainly this edition is clear enough and the photographs are of sufficient resolution to provide detailed study, but I personally would pay $100 for a premium edition printed on high quality stock with high quality inks.

Now if we could persuade Mr. Lyons to turn his keen eye towards the Grand Touring Prototype era of the late 80s-early 90s...

      4 out of 5 stars Men & Machines.......1999-12-22

This book is the perfect complement to Mr. Lyon's first book on the Can Am series.

Rather than a race by race account, the book presents a quick season overview, a review of the machines of that year and then takes a focus on one or two personalities whose impact affected that year most strongly. Most of the material is new and it is fascinating. The material on Jim Hall and Peter Bryant alone make this book a must read for anyone who saw these cars race or wished that they had.

If you're only going to buy one book, buy Can Am. If you want a broader view of the series, the men and the machines, then Can Am Photo History is the book. Together, they're an awesome set.

As I spent many summers at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course watching these cars, the memories and insights into these awesome cars are irreplaceable.

4 out of 5 stars That rare sequel that's better than the original!.......1999-12-18

First of all, I have to say that I loved Pete's first book on this subject,"Can-Am". When I heard he was doing a second book, I was a bit skeptical. Was he simply milking the topic for a few more bucks? How could he top the original? Well, he did it! With its in-depth and very enlightening interview format (there's even an interview with Denny Hulme, done shortly before his death) and its wealth of superb all-new photographs, this book is a Can-Am lovers dream! Lyons captures the look and feel of the old, "real" Can-Am as we remember it, and as those who lived it remember it. My sole complaint: Too short! Tack another 100 pages onto the next one, Pete!

5 out of 5 stars The definitive treatise on a magic time in American racing!.......1999-12-17

Taken together, this book and Pete's "Can-Am", put a human face on this unique time in American morotsports. The cars were unlimited, the men larger than life. Pete's easy flowing writing style punctuated by previously unpublished photos and interviews allow those of us who were there to return, and the newbies to grasp the flavor of what they missed.

The book fulfills the personal dream of one Can-Am enthusiast: to stroll through the pits of that golden era, camera and tape-recorder in hand, chatting with the greats and not-so-greats, with the knowledge of how it all turns out, and a historical appreciation of what surrounds me...

The photos are breathtaking, and the interviews enlightening. Take this snippet from John Surtees, on his dice with Hall at Riverside in '66: "...the Lola worked well [on the straights], we were running minimum flap and things on it. So the race had that pattern: he'd out-squirt me coming throught the hairpin on the long straight, I'd get right in the slipstream, he'd drag me along, and then I'd have to try to out-brake him again. Oh, that was a good race." Or, this one from Jim Hall: "One of the beauties of being a race car builder in the time that I did it was the fact that it could be a one-man show. I could have ideas and produce them and go try them, and find out whether they were any good or not. I got to actually feel the car was better, and it went faster. That's one of the nice things about racing, that you get instant feedback." For those of us who were there, Pete has a gift for turning history into literature, heroes into persons, then into now. Thanks Pete!

GTO is the car that started it all. Prior to 1964, performance cars were full-size hardtops and sedans with the largest-displacement engines available. While other manufacturers were concentrating on their full-size lines, Pontiac saw the potential for dropping a big block engine into an intermediate frame and marketing it at a budget price.

Capturing the history of the A-body Pontiac, with emphasis on the GTO, this comprehensive reference includes the features that car enthusiasts are searching for. It includes all-new optional equipment installation rates, advertising slogans, expanded technical specifications, and collector-market values updated to 2003 for Tempest, Tempest Custom, LeMans (through 1981), Sprint, GTO, Luxury LeMans, LeMans Sport, LeMans GT, and GT-37, as well as dream, show, and racing cars.

        Book Description

In poetry and prose, seven members of a Virginia-based breast cancer support group express their feelings as they face diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Their voices are unusually powerful and reflect their backgrounds in education, the arts and journalism. The book demonstrates the healing power of words and is being praised by survivors, their families and friends as the first source for expression and confirmation of their own experiences.

5 out of 5 stars A courageous, honest look at the breast cancer experience.......2001-08-28

This writer's group of breast cancer survivors explores the darkness and the light of dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, the most common cancer in American women. The prose, poetry, and vignettes offered in this wonderful collection are presented with power and an honesty that sometimes takes your breath away. For example, one entry is on thoughts of suicide -- something even we breast cancer survivors rarely confess to each other. The writer talks starkly about being surprised to find herself planning (just in case) an act that she had always found dispicable, and speaking with tremndous candor and bravery about her thoughts and reasons for even looking at the issue. Some of the entries are also just plain funny, with the kind of irony that serious illness or disaster sometimes engenders. I'll always keep a vivid image of the account of one of the writer's brothers shopping for Astroglide for her when it was unavailable in her part of the country -- and he did this shopping in full clerical gear and collar! As a two-time breast cancer survivor (so far), I've used this book to focus my own thinking and to help offer peer-to-peer support to other women facing the challenges of the disease and the changes it brings to their lives. I've shared it with my husband to help him understand even more fully the range of effects and emotions caused by breast cancer. I've read whole chapters of it aloud as a member of a therapy group for women with advanced breast cancer. The book has helped us as we explore issues arising from dealing with a less-than-favorable long-term prognosis and the existential questions that arise from being in that situation. If you have or have had breast cancer and have ever wondered, "Does anyone else feel this way, or am I just crazy??" buy this and read it! Believe me, you are not alone! If you have not had the disease, but perhaps are a friend or relative of someone with breast cancer, and if you want to know the emotional experience of having breast cancer, this is the book for you. Can You Come Here Where I Am? is an invaluble resource and also a comfort in showing the common threads of experiencing the diagnosis, treatment and aftermath of breast cancer.

5 out of 5 stars Personal, poignant reponses to diagnosis, treatment........1998-09-25

A wonderful, uplifting, funny and enchanting look at the lives of seven women struggling and living through the rigors of diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer. As every woman's nightmare became reality for these women, they chose to pour out their disbelief, anger, frustration and their determination in intensely personal vignettes about life, loss, priorities and survival.

I began this book expecting to be depressed, but found myself laughing as well as crying at vagaries of the medical profession, the common ways we all deceive ourselves, and the ultimate hopefulness of spirit. This is not another book about how to deal with diagnosis, nor is it the narrative of a miracle. It is the lyrical (and sometimes in-your-face) story of the ordinary and extraordinary events that punctuate all our lives.

A wonderful book for anyone touched by breast cancer - survivor, family member or friend - and I suppose that includes all of us.
