A practical primer.......2003-04-10
For those who are interested in the management of organizational knowledge and intangible assets, 'Valuing intangible assets'should prove to be highly practical. There are many knowledge management frameworks out there that assist business executive to manage their intangible assets (such as Sveiby's intangible asset monitor), the practical usage of these frameworks would be greatly enhanced by incorporating the valuation aspect of intangible assets. Reilly has provided a comprehensive illustration of both the 'scientific' & 'artistic' aspects of valuating intangible assets. 'Valuing Intangible Assets' is easy to read & loaded with useful examples, it is a rare one in the market.
Recommend Purchase!.......2002-08-13
A larger portion of the value of a company nowadays comes from Intangibles (brands, patents, workforce & related contracts, durable customers etc.). This holds true in several industry sectors. Measurement of intangibles is a fascinating subject, but until this book was published, there was no single body of knowledge available to guide the general reader, or a Valuation professional. You had to work in one of the reputed valuation firms to be exposed to the techniques. This book is by far the best practitioner-oriented Intangibles Valuation book I have come across. It is very comprehensive in terms of the topics it covers, and does a wonderful job of covering almost all intangibles of interest. Each chapter is written by a relevant expert, and this invariably leads to variations in quality and some lack of consistency. However, for the most part, it is very well written, and definitely worth the price it sells for.
Great Reference Book.......2001-12-31
A great book for anyone or performs valuations of intangible assets or wants to learn how. I believe that this book will become to intangible valuation what Pratt's book is to business valuation.
A complete manual of intangible valuation methods.......2000-08-28
The authors rely on their extensive professional experiences in this field to provide a comprehensive description of the three valuation methods for intangible assets--cost, market, and income methods. Easy to read, this book explains the nuances of each method in more detail than similar books available in the market. It reads more like an accessible textbook than a vague primer on the subject. It also contains many insightful and valuable case examples of how the methods are applied to different real life cases. As an MBA student, I have benefitted greatly from this book and will probably use it as a reference in the future.
I hope future editions will include option pricing valuation methods.

The O'Reilly Factor isn't just the name of Bill O'Reilly's popular talk show on the Fox News Channel anymore--it's also the title of his book, which, appropriately enough, actually reads like a TV show. The narrative rarely proceeds for more than a few paragraphs before a bold-faced "This Just In" or "Bulletin" pops up on the page and breaks the stream of thought--sort of like a commercial interruption. This provides an ideal forum for O'Reilly to sound off on any number of topics with lots of verve but not too much depth. There are breezy chapters here on money, media, religion, race, and sex, among others. O'Reilly dislikes many things, and he isn't shy about sharing his opinions: "SUVs should be immediately outlawed," he rants. Here's O'Reilly on President Clinton: "What a ridiculous waste!" Attorney General Janet Reno is a "ridiculous, incompetent woman" and President Clinton's "primary 'enabler.'"
This is not a subtle book, and its bombastic approach would be even more grating if it weren't for several flashes of self-deprecation, such as when the author shares a negative piece of viewer mail, or when he writes, "In case you haven't noticed, I'm a cocky bastard." Sometimes O'Reilly's put-downs are creative and funny: "If God has a sense of humor, as I believe he does, [Al Sharpton and David Duke] will be sharing a sauna in the netherworld. With one thermostat." And he's good at illustrating his points with outrageous details. In criticizing the bloated federal budget, for instance, he points to these shockers: $230,000 for a study of housefly sex habits, $27,000 for an analysis of why prisoners want to escape, and $100,000 to find out why Americans don't like beets. (To which he replies: "Houseflies mate when no one is looking. Prisoners don't like prison. Beets don't taste good.") O'Reilly is often considered something of a conservative, but he can also play the blue-collar populist: "The rich want us to believe that anyone can make the quantum leap from bowling league to country club by just working a little harder. That's supposed to keep us motivated and quiet." Fans of his TV show will probably appreciate this cantankerous book. --John J. Miller

"A lot of people love Bill O'Reilly, you see. Then again, a lot of people would like to punch Bill O'Reilly in the nose. The joke's on them, though. Bill O'Reilly, this brash New York guy with a brash show and a brash book, is becoming a huge media star."
NEW YORK OBSERVER
"He is a complicated man, at once belligerent and self-effacing, ambitious and determined to remain humble. He can be a loudmouth but also companionable. He is Everyman on a barstool, mad as hell, but with a wink."
NEWSWEEK
"This book bristles with assumptions, assessments, and attitudes that will either have you bobbing your head in agreement or shaking it in disbelief. No wonder O'Reilly's ratings are rising the way the stocks once did."
FORBES
"Personal anecdote meets political discourse in [The O'Reilly Factor] where O'Reilly is in a pure, heartfelt state. He's softhearted and enraged in equal measures. He's hard-driven and bemused by where his drive got him. He's the male sphinx as TV blabbermouth."

My grandmother read this book out loud to me and we really enjoyed itI had a glass of warm milk and her cookies and I want her to read it again to me.I want to be just like Bill someday. This book is fun and never boring too.
Surprisely good for a conservative analysis........2007-08-07
OK, so O'Reilly would not label himself a conservative. However, most people have lumped him into that category. I am not sure that in itself is correct. O'Reilly seems intelligent and moderate in many things a conservative would not be. For example, on gay pride, he states that he has nothing against being gay, but don't show your displeasure in goofy marches. Any sex should be kept in the bedroom. This shows the common sense of Bill O'Reilly as opposed the goofy opinions of some conservative commentators. Bill O'Reilly makes intelligent summations in this book that are hard to argue against.
This is an intelligent read for the politically minded. Although, I think O'Reilly has a big ego, his opinions are wise and bear the test of time.
Someone's Opinion. Good or Bad, Treat it as Such........2007-06-04
"Bill O'reilly's personal view of many things affecting our society" pretty much sums this up. The topics range from raising a child to the media as it affects our society. Much of what he writes are his personal views and opinions.
Whether you believe them or not this book is good to read just to become familiar with someone's opinion who regularly reports on the topics written about. Whatever your opinion of him (good or bad) reading a book like this has it's merits either way. If you believe the opinions, you have another reference. If you don't believe the opinions, you have a contrasting viewpoint for your arguments.
What you should NOT do is buy this book hoping to form an opinion for yourself just from his opinions and suddenly agree or disagree what he says without checking into it.
---*** THE BOTTOM LINE ***---
This book is someone's opinion. Treat it as such.
That being said, it is worthwhile to read and would be ideal to borrow, but worth purchasing as well.

Book Description
"A wonderfully unique resource for women who are continually searching for new insights in the area of woman-affirming faith and worship."
--Reverend Sharon Vandegrift
United Methodist Chaplain
Drexel University
Childhood religious images of judgment, punishment, unworthiness, and shame, of male saviors, messiahs, and Higher Powers, pursue all women into adulthood. Many women realize they must leave behind these traditional concepts and images for a more authentic spirituality. Yet they find, to their dismay, that the male symbols of God are deeply rooted in their psyches and difficult to transform.
In this book, the poignant personal memories of women of all ages and lifestyles are interwoven with the collective story of women buried in the Hebrew Scriptures and the Christian Bible. Together, these women explore the lost glory of Eve, Lilith, and Mary. They teach us to plumb the depths of our relationships with our mothers, our bodies, and ourselves; our sexuality and vulnerability; and our journey into old age. Each chapter offers a rich tapestry of poetry, ritual, story, and meditation, a splendid invitation to join a circle of women in search of woman-affirming spirituality.
"Patricia Lynn Reilly guides her readers towards solutions. . . .This book is an excellent map filled to overflowing with provocative exercises and concrete suggestions."

A Must Read .......2005-07-03
for women recovering from the abuses of the church and relationships. It really touched my heart as a woman from a traditional religous path with devastating results. This book is very empowering and does a great job of handing the responsibility back to women for thier lives and thier spiritual growth. The author understand the hows and whys of this loss. This book has helped me understand myself more and more. It gets to the root of the issue which is where real change can begin. I will be purchasing this one for the public library hoping that a younger woman will read it. It is a life changing book. After this one read The Dance of The Disident Daughter by Sue Monk Kidd. I stand taller and hold my head up higher than I have ever done in my life. Blessings.
inspiring.......2000-01-19
I recommend this book to women of all religions that have questions and problems with religious dogma. The writer uses a lot of examples of abused women but, I think she is just expressing her own experiences and that is what makes this book so real. I actually had tears in my eyes when I read one prayer in this book, and I was on a public bus! I will read this book again and again for spiritual comfort. I think this book has something important to say for women - no matter how cynical they may be about organized religions!
Beautiful cover and intriguing title............1999-11-11
First, I found out this book is being reprinted in November of 1999 and will be available in bookstores late November. Its a good book. I liked it and learned more about how I could embrace God and heal the deep religious wounds of my childhood. Thanks, Patricia, for taking the time to write this compelling and challenging book. I always thought that if there was a God, he/she would have to be bigger than the limited and unembracable god I learned about in catholic school. This book dosen't put down religion, it challenges each of us to see that a God crafted by men is a limited God. And to search for God and spirituality that will truly heal us.
Just the title gave me an option!.......1999-11-04
I really enjoyed this book and even gave it to our community library. The author does a great job of outlining the problems using stories from people in her groups, and then she shows how to put that behind you and find a God who you can really relate to. It was so refreshing to to read a well written book by an educated and knowledgable women on this subject. I went on to read all of her books and heard her speak. Every book continues to develop this theme of embracing a larger view of god and ourselves.
Disappointing and sexist.......1999-05-18
What Reilly says in 350 pages could have easily been condensed into a chapter or two. This book dwells on abuses suffered by some women, and is quite biased in implying that female children are the only ones who suffer neglect, abuse, and disappointment at the hands of their parents or other influential adults. I found most of the subject matter depressing (and redundant). I believe feminists should acknowledge what has occured in women's lives in the past, but also must note the present and look toward the future, striving to support the women they supposedly want to inspire, instead of asking them to relive past trauma on a regular basis in the name of feminism!

"
The bestselling author of
The O'Reilly Factor,
The No Spin Zone, and
Who's Looking Out for You? talks straight to kids this time. He is as demanding, direct, and wry as ever -- but he's also more revealing too, sharing candid snapshots of his own childhood throughout.
Bill O'Reilly, a former schoolteacher, now an award-winning broadcast news journalist, husband, and father of two, joins forces with an experienced educator to bring you, America's youth, a code of ethics by which to live. In this latest book, Bill takes to task bullies, cheaters, advertisers who target you irresponsibly, and parents who fight for their children to win undeserved honors instead of earning them on their own merit.
He lays bare the unvarnished truths about sex, money, smoking, drugs, alcohol, and friends. What he has to say about these issues may very well surprise you. He offers coping devices for those enduring a divorce, struggling with teacher, parent, or sibling relationships, and planning their futures. He also shares wisdom on such subjects as death, politics, and God.
Whether you take the tests he's provided, take the advice he doles out, or just take a cue from the personal stories he shares, you're bound to make smarter choices in your life, and that's all Bill asks for.

Customer Reviews:
This is a great book.......2007-10-07
I was hesitant to buy this book cause of all the bad reviews, but i did anyway; and im glad i did. Im 19 and this book gave me a lot of inspiration and wisdom. The book is smart but it appeals directly to kids my age (and younger too.) He talks about a lot of issues that most kids feel like they cant bring up to their parents, such as drugs, sex, alchohal that kindove thing. But anyway im really happy i ignored those negative comments, and you should too if your thinking of buying the book. I notice that a lot of the ppl giving the bad reviews are doing it because they dont like Bill, because the book i read was one of the best books on the subject of teen issues. So buy this book for your kids, i promise you wont regret it!
T.D.
You can't judge a book..........2007-10-05
...by the reviews of a lot of people who have *never read it*. Like many of O'Reilly's harshest critics these "reviewers" base their analysis on third-hand opinions culled from the propaganda found on extreme left-wing websites; without looking at all to the source material. If you're the type who bases his/her understanding of current events on slogans from bumper stickers shilled at the campus bookstore then this book isn't for you.
Kids have a rough time of it, especially in school settings. It's great to see a public figure with experience in the classroom reaching out to kids with solid common-sense advice to help them navigate reality.
it's good to know Bill O'reilly cares.......2007-10-02
I loved this book and I brought it to school and reviewed it for my class.
Thanks Bill for the A+ I got and for remembering kids and this book for us.
Keep This Man Away From Kids!!!!.......2007-09-28
This man may have the most popular news show in America but that is because he appeals to simple war mongering Americans. He does his upmost to undermine the standards of the American press. Don't buy this book and if you see him near any school yards, call the police immediately!!
A LIFE PRESERVER FOR OUR KIDS........2007-06-26
BILL O'REILLY FACTOR FOR KIDS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OUT FOR KIDS TODAY. HE GIVES PRACTICAL ADVICE THAT KIDS CAN UNDERSTAND IN THIS WORLD OF UNCERTIANTY, WHEN EVERYTHING HAS TO BE PC, AND THOSE WHO ARE IN HIGHER LEARNING SOMETIMES DOES NOT HAVE THEIR BEST INTEREST AT HEART. GIVE THIS BOOK TO ALL YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN, IT CAN HELP THEM SURVIVE.

Book Description
The goal of computational cognitive neuroscience is to understand how the brain embodies the mind by using biologically based computational models comprising networks of neuronlike units. This text, based on a course taught by Randall O'Reilly and Yuko Munakata over the past several years, provides an in-depth introduction to the main ideas in the field. The neural units in the simulations use equations based directly on the ion channels that govern the behavior of real neurons, and the neural networks incorporate anatomical and physiological properties of the neocortex. Thus the text provides the student with knowledge of the basic biology of the brain as well as the computational skills needed to simulate large-scale cognitive phenomena.
The text consists of two parts. The first part covers basic neural computation mechanisms: individual neurons, neural networks, and learning mechanisms. The second part covers large-scale brain area organization and cognitive phenomena: perception and attention, memory, language, and higher-level cognition. The second part is relatively self-contained and can be used separately for mechanistically oriented cognitive neuroscience courses. Integrated throughout the text are more than forty different simulation models, many of them full-scale research-grade models, with friendly interfaces and accompanying exercises. The simulation software (PDP++, available for all major platforms) and simulations can be downloaded free of charge from the Web. Exercise solutions are available, and the text includes full information on the software.

Great for Grads/Professional--confusing and convoluted for undergrad.......2006-11-17
I am currently taking a honors psych class which utilizes this textbook as a lab handout (we solve the exercises closing out each chapter). I find this book very hard to read due to the language and the explanations the authors use to explain certain topics. The book reads more like a guide for those already familiar with the subject matter, and the questions closing out each chapter are even harder to understand than the chapter text itself. If the authors wish the book to be of any help to undergrads who are not already familiar with the topic they should take a step back and revise the text so that it is understandable for all. NOTE TO UA STUDENTS THINKING OF TAKING THE CLASS WHICH UTILIZES THIS BOOK

Best introduction to neural network models of cognitive processes.......2006-03-23
"Computational Explorations in Cognitive Neuroscience" provides a very readable overview of state-of-the-art neural network models for human cognition with an emphasis on both biological plausibility and experimental (psychological/cognitive) evidence.
A new paradigm.......2000-09-27
In this book, research themes, which include perception, memory, language as well as high-level cognition, are explained in terms of computation. Their theory is based on brain science, computer science, and psychology. Though the authors speculate about the functions of each part of the brain and the relation among them to some extent, the authors propose a new paradigm to existing sciences. Their integrative approach and method are very simulative, and I've got a lot of hints from this book. But I don't need the usageof particular software, PDP++ in such a theoretical book. The authors explain and demonstrate their models and theories using PDP++ at the end of each chapter. If you want to study how to use PDP++ as well as their theories, this book will be extremely good one.

One night I had tears on my pillow from laughter.
The next night I had tears on my pillow from the inspirational story.
It's likely that many of my friends will get this book for Christmas or their birthday. Just a great book!
A Must Read for Sports Fans!.......2007-08-08
I have read Rick Reilly on and off in SI for years. I am not a regular subscriber, so my readings of his work have not been consistent. I was getting ready to take a trip and wanted something that would be fun to read. I saw the 5 star reviews (on Amazon) of Rick's book but I was somewhat skeptical about getting it. As a University of Tennessee alumni and fan I had been upset when he had written an article slamming Pat Summit (legendary UT women's basketball coach) about "running up the score" on one of the Lady Vols opponents. Despite all this I decided to take a chance. I needed a good read on my vacation, and I knew he was a good writer, and I needed have a laugh or two while flying, or more often than not, sitting in the airport during another delay.
This book is far more than I expected. This book is very funny, but many of his articles are very touching, and he exposes the best and the worst in the people involved in sports. Sports are the venue, but it is his insight into the people that make the stories so compelling.
As a big fan of the late Jim Murray's writing, I never believed there would ever be another sports writer that good, but I think Rick is getting to that level. A great read, a must read, for any sports fan, period! Every bit a 5 star rating and more.
Good one.......2007-08-03
When my husband's Sports Illustrated comes, I open it up to the last page and read what Rick Reilly has to say. I really like his column and the fact that he went onto the Oprah Show to try to defend his gender...I know, I know, it is a losing battle if you saw the episode, you know what I mean. The column is usually is the only thing I read in the magazine. So when my husband mentioned Rick had this new book out I had to get it for him...if for nothing else to see him actually reading a book instead of Sporting News or Sports Illustrated.
Excellent book. Rick Reilly is extremely gifted........2007-07-30
My husband gets sports illustrated every week, and every week I flip to the back and read the life of Reilly. What a great writer he is. I enjoyed this book very much.
100 Best of Rick Reilly.......2007-07-18
I have both of Rick Reilly's books, and loved this one as much as the first. Very touching. mia rose

Powerful stories of the essence of Thailand.......2007-08-20
The powerful stories and insights from these Traveler' Tales writers captures the essence of this beautiful country. To go to Thailand without the benefit of using this book would be a mistake. While writing my soon to be released memoir: A Broad Abroad in Thailand: An Expat's Misadventures in The Land of Smiles, I referred to the book many times for spellings of exotic foods and places. As I paged through it, I was again moved by the poetic prose of the writers, and found myself reading on and on.
In my book, my last chapter says it all: "I have smelled the sensuous aromas, eaten the exotic food and continue to be awestruck by the ever-evolving weather cycles of this incredible country. I have prayed in Buddhist temples. I have seen boisterous bar girls as they cavorted with the farangs, and watched as they knelt in prayer at the temple. I have witnessed young monks praying in the temples for hours and have observed them laughing and watching TV as playful as young boys in the park.
Lord Buddha most assuredly blessed this beautiful and peaceful country. I believe that the uncomplaining Buddhist tolerance shapes both the lives of the people and the society of Thailand, and cannot help but touch the lives of foreigners who go there seeking asylum for their soul from a spiritually deaf world.
Thailand shares her beauty and many blessings with all foreigners, without prejudice, and calls them back in her own sensuous way. I will miss her crowded cities, dirty, polluted capital, peaceful people who accept all things in life, and her love of laughter and music.
I am eternally grateful that I was blessed to experience it.
Dodie Cross, author of "A Broad Abroad: An Expat's Misadventures in the Land of Smiles"
Capturing the Essence of Thailand.......2007-01-11
This was my first experience with the Travelers' Tales books, but it certainly will not be my last. The stories vary from two to eight pages, and while they differ mightily from one another, each captures the essence of one part of the Thai culture. The stories are educational, entertaining, and some are really funny. A great book!
Outstanding book for every traveler.......2006-11-09
The most outstanding book for traveler I've ever read. Really helped me to keep my eyes open during my trip to Thailand and kept me from being an "ugly American" there.
This book captures Thailand's soul............2006-06-26
As someone who has recently "discovered" the magic and charms of Thailand, like many who've come away from first visits the huge variety of sights, sounds, tastes and "life" leave us perplexed yet so eager to learn much more about this wonderful culture! "Travellers' Tales Thailand: True Stories" answers many of our questions in such a fun way through interesting, even fascinating stories about real people and real places in Thailand.
And there's more, much more, for the book weaves throughout helpful tips, places to visit, experiences to try, helpful Thai words, etc. And the last chapter "What You Need To Know - The Next Step" is a mini-guidebook in itself, a helpful read before going. This book will be with me on all my future visits to this delightful land.

Rick Reilly, the mainstay of Sports Illustrated's back page, is a writer with a facile short game, but, as The Life of Reilly makes clear, he was born to go long. As entertaining, clever, witty, and, at times, irate as his rants and raves at the end of each week's issue can be, it's the sheer talent and bravura he displays in the features he's penned for the magazine that best exhibit why he's considered one of the finest sportswriters of our time. If his columns have a way of constantly poking you in the ribs, the longer pieces can sometimes take your breath away.
While The Life of Reilly covers the bases of all major and most other sports, Reilly's writing about golf is especially stellar, and three pieces alone--his chronicle of a round of golf with President Clinton, his account of O.J. Simpson's trials on public golf courses, and his reportage, on deadline, of Jack Nicklaus's sixth victory at Augusta--are worth the volume's greens fee. As beautifully as Reilly can paint the big picture, these pieces display his uncanny eye for detail, his skills as a reporter, and his inventiveness as a writer. On Nicklaus's improbable Masters title at age 46: "Maybe Nicklaus had drawn up a contract with Lucifer for one last major, for that slippery 20th that had eluded him since 1980, for a sixth green blazer. In exchange, Nicklaus would do pro-ams in Hades for the rest of his days. What else could explain it?" What else, indeed.
Reilly provides short postscripts to most of the pieces--some are just pithy, while others open windows onto the writer's craft. They're a nice touch, but then, Reilly's work, in general, is full of them. --Jeff Silverman

Hillarious.......2007-01-10
Rick Reilly has a unique gift for communicating his humorous tales. Thumbs up.
The reason I subscribe to SI........2004-04-14
Every Thursday I check the mailbox when I get home, see my Sports Illustrated, and go straight for the back page so I can read Mr. Reilly's column. There is a reason he has been named Sportswriter of the Year so many times, he is simply the best. Reilly writes about the humorous, the sad, and the ironic of sports. I laughed at why he hates the Yankees so much, and almost bawled when reading about the Columbine teacher who gave his life for his students. I do some writing myself and even in my dreams I am not half as good as Mr. Reilly is, and never will be. If you are a fan of good, solid writing, pick this book up and read it over and over again.
The funniest writer I have read in a long time........2003-11-06
There are serious columns in the book. The humorous ones are what made me read the book again. The chapter on the Olympics is the funniest thing I have ever read. Anyone who thinks Reilly is boring has no sense of humor.
This one's a keeper..........2003-08-26
I had the privilege of being interviewed several times by Rick when I was a high school track athlete and he was a young flip-flop wearing sports writer for the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper in Boulder, Colorado earning his stripes covering high school sports. Even way back then it was obvious that he enjoyed sports writing and it came as little surprise to see him eventually end up as SI's most notable writer. This collection of some of his best (but not all of his best) SI columns is a gem. Not all are "laugh out loud" humorous, but many are (a testament to his versatility as a writer). His postscript comments are also entertaining. After a thorough reading, this book is a keeper. I can't wait for Volume 2.
Reilly is the King.......2002-09-06
Nobody writes about sport like Reilly. This is a great collection of his Sports Illustrated pieces. If you are a fan of sports journalism, this is a must read for you.

Book Description
Vanquishing once and for all the tired biblical theory of woman as the cause of man's fall from grace, Imagine a Woman in Love with Herself empowers women to move from self-loathing to self-love, from self-criticism to self-celebration. It dismantles the question "What's wrong with me?" by exploring its historical, theological, and personal origins. Patricia Lynn Reilly explores 20 self-affirming qualities that encourage women to be the authors of their own lives and to cultivate knowledge and love of themselves. Each section is filled with reflections and meditations that ask readers to reclaim their inner resources and reconnect with the essential truth about themselves.

Struck a chord.......2007-06-14
This book really got to my core as I read it! Its not a long read and it was almost disappointing to complete it so quickly but I knew I would end up re-reading the book many times. It is a beautiful novel that often left me teary or grinning. Thank you for such a wonderful piece!
every woman NEEDS this book!.......2007-05-11
a beautiful combination of poetry, story telling, personal insight, sharing and comraderie amongst women. every woman on earth should read this, cherish it and share it!
Not what I expected.......2006-12-31
Honestly, I don't even know why this book was written. While reading it I thought this sounds so odd....we should be heading towards equality and the whole part of "out of balance" is rediculous...eating ice cream and spending time with your mom and fantasizing about sex...ummm last time i checked that kept a lot of ppl i know away from medication and a lot of stress. I did not like this book at all and thought it to be a complete farse....seriously children dont masterbate when they are little....yeah they are sexually aroused but they dont go exploring there bodies and think the way Reilly is describing...its too profound and the world girl-child sounds too robotic...creepy almost like the movie Donnie Darko.
Review .......2005-08-16
I am enjoying this book, although I am reading it at a slow pace. The chapters are divided by sections of the poems and there are meditations in each chapter-which I find helpful.
Awful, Just Awful.......2004-11-27
I really wanted to like this book. I have been schooled in the wisdom of "original blessing" as a corrective for the concept of original sin, and well, I'm a woman. So I thought this book would be right up my alley. Reilly goes overboard, however, in rejecting _any_ attempts at self-discernment as negative. There is such a thing as self-assessment that is accepting, positive, and life-affirming, without necessarily approving of everything that we accept about ourselves.
In the end, by overlooking the necessary distinction between "acceptance" and "approval," the book limits the possibilities for growth that it can nurture. And that's a shame. It is, ultimately, patronizing to believe that women are too fragile to handle self-critique. We can be our own best critics, but this book won't help.
Conclusion: stand by with the insulin shots while reading this one.

Fighting off a pack of starving wolves, wrestling alligators in the swamp, romping with bear cubs, drawing off the venom of a giant rattlesnake bite with the heart of a fresh-killed deer--it's all in a day's work for the Baxter family of the Florida scrublands. But young Jody Baxter is not content with these electrifying escapades, or even with the cozy comfort of home with Pa and Ma. He wants a pet, a friend with whom he can share his quiet cogitations and his corn pone. Jody gets his pet, a frisky fawn he calls Flag, but that's not all. With Flag comes a year of life lessons, frolicking times, and achingly hard decisions. This powerful book is as compelling now as when it was written over 60 years ago. Read simply as a naturalist study of the Florida interior, it fascinates and entices. Add the heart-stopping adventure and heart-wrenching human elements, and this is a classic well worth its Pulitzer Prize. Earthy dialect and homespun wisdom season the story, giving it a unique and unforgettable flavor, and N.C. Wyeth's warm, soft illustrations capture an era of rough subsistence and sweet survival. (Ages 12 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
No novel better epitomizes the love between a child and a pet than The Yearling. Young Jody adopts an orphaned fawn he calls Flag and makes it a part of his family and his best friend. But life in the Florida backwoods is harsh, and so, as his family fights off wolves, bears, and even alligators, and faces failure in their tenuous subsistence farming, Jody must finally part with his dear animal friend. There has been a film and even a musical based on this moving story, a fine work of great American literature.

Part of growing up.......2007-06-27
I read this book as a young person while still in school. Now, while picking some books for a 10 year old nephew who is becoming an avid reader, I read it again. It is a beautiful book but it made me cry at 74 as well as when I first read it at about 14. I now live close to the Rawlings home in Cross Creek and have a keener apreciation of the setting but the writing itself is what makes the book. Of course the story represents another era and a poor southern family but the characterizations are well drawn and universal. Fodderwing and his family are people that every young person should meet.
Just as the opening words, to my mind, of "Mr. Roberts" transcend good writing and are superb, so the final few sentences of "The Yearling" speak to me in universal terms about youth and "where has it all gone?"
the yearling.......2007-02-22
received my books in excellent condition as described and in a reasonable amount of time
The Yearling.......2007-01-10
The Yearling is one of the most emotionally provocative classics I have ever had the fortune to come across. Being a 12 year old myself, I empathize greatly with our young hero, Jody Baxter, who resides in a dense florida scrub, leading an agrarian lifestyle with his father and mother. Coming of age in the savage, untamed heart of late ninteenth century Florida is not an easy task, and Jody will need to mature swiftly if he wants to survive in the wild enviorment that is his own. Luckily, many things aid him, mostly indirectly, such as his pet fawn, that he cares for with such a passion, that in the end, a very difficult and demanding choice is required of him.
Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings writes this splendid tale with an honest and unwavering hand, thankfully not romanticizing the protaganist, as can be seen with novels of a lesser quality. Our heroe's flaws and redeeming qualities are portrayed in a realistic fashion, as Rawlings shifts between comedy and tragedy with the deft skill of a very gifted writer. This delightful story is bereft of all unconvincing melodrama that often plagues such novels, and tells this innocent boys experiences with vivid imagery. No matter how impassive the reader might be, Rawlings eventually delves into our minds, hearts, and memories.
A bonding read aloud novel for parents and children.......2006-11-17
My 10 year old son and I read this aloud to each other. We were so moved by the story and it opened up many discussions about life. It is written beautifully! I lost myself in Rawlings poetic literature. Some of the people who reviewed the book, calling it boring, missed the experience altogether!!!!!
I hope by reading novels like this one, my son will think about the simple things in life differently. This novel teaches humans to have a conscience. I loved it.
I Feel Sorry for the So-Called "Kids" and Teens of the 1 Star.......2006-10-10
I originally wasn't planning to write another review for amazon.com, but the movie of "The Yearling" was on TV last night. Remembering how it touched me, especially the sorrowful end, I decided to take a look at the reviews posted here.
Most were brilliant, right to the point, and then I saw "kid's review" and a few others that found the book boring.
Sorry, children, that in an age of Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan, not to mention strumpets like Britney and Jessica Simpson you don't have the chance to come of age. Or to appreciate a classic, moving read. Yes, we're an image and media-driven society, and the negative effect of it all falls on these kids who not only hate a classic, but can't even write why they hate it in a meaningful review.
This the price we are paying when our kids can't feel struggle, pity, or hurt.
"The Yearling" was a very realistic tale of the life of a poor American family struggling to make ends meet in late 19th Century Florida, and of a boy who like many today, doesn't understand that there is bitter besides the sweet in life - especially when it comes to the loss of a beloved pet. I can only wish that some of the sorry weirdos who have recently murdered schoolchildren or another weirdo denizen of Florida had read this book, or the Twain and Jack London classics when they were children. They might have learned something good and moral beyond the twisted thoughts that they came of age with.
This book, along with the aforementioned Twain and London classics, "Uncle Tom's Cabin", and Bill Bennett's "Book of Virtues" should belong on the bookshelf of any and all American mid-and upper-elementary school age children.
I teach 6th grade and I would not hesitate in recommending this book or any of the classics that I grew up reading to my students.
