The recent boom in independent filmmaking has been both a boon and an added challenge for aspiring directors. While the chic status of festivals like Sundance makes it easier for a few hot new directors to find major distributors, other worthy films risk being lost amid a sudden flood of contenders. Chris Gore, editor of Film Threat magazine, has written the Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide to help the aspiring auteur rise above the tide. The book is chock-full of practical down-and-dirty advice. Every aspect of submitting to and attending film festivals is covered, from an exhaustive listing of festivals and their entry deadlines (the Turku, Finland, Lesbian and Gay Film Festival deadline is in July, so get cracking) to what to wear to the industry party you'll be crashing (big pants with big pockets, the better to stash giveaways and whip out business cards). You can even find a listing for the best bar in the Ukraine (Eric's in Kyiv) and a sidebar of handy tips that will keep you on your projectionist's good side.
Perhaps most helpful is Gore's inclusion of interviews with actual filmmakers who have experienced wildly varying degrees of success; the directors are remarkably candid and very generously try to help others avoid their own mistakes. Those who are still struggling not only illustrate the ongoing process of learning to play industry games, they show an artist's remarkable ability to keep the spirit alive. Filmmaker Joal Ryan memorably describes taking inspiration from the career of Pauly Shore: "The world tells him he's not funny; he says he is--and keeps working." Whether you want to be a filmmaker or just party like one, The Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide will help you operate like a true industry player. --Ali Davis

Customer Reviews:
This book is indispensable if you are an indie filmmaker.......2007-07-16
I am an independent filmmaker and run my own film festival in Utah, called The Gangrene Film Festival. I have striven to find a short list of film festivals that have good patronage and excellent exposure in which to enter my short films in. The truth is, the film festival scene is so saturated with fly-by-night film festivals that merely searching with Google only gives you a huge list of podunk festivals that aren't worth your while.
Chris Gore's book is an excellent resource to help weed through the white noise and get at the festivals that will truly find you exposure. He categorizes festivals into different groups, those with high-exposure, middle-of the road fests, and all the rest. He also categorizes festivals by genre, which I found particularly useful.
If you aim to send your films to the festivals, make sure you start with Chris Gore's book. It is absolutely comprehensive--the only festival guide you will ever need.
Thanks, Chris, and keep going man.
Hope this helps.

Must Have For Any Filmmaker.......2007-03-12
This book is a much needed addition for any filmmaker. Not only does it list an extensive amount of festivals, it gives solid info about each festival that you usually don't find on the festival's website. Chris Gore also did a wonderful thing, he has top ten lists for categories such as; top ten underground fests, top ten digital media fests, etc. You don't want to blindly send out your film and pay the outragous festival fees if you know your film doesn't fit the vibe of the festival you are sending to. With this book you will avoid doing this. If you only get one book before sending your film out to festivals, get this one!
Good starting point...........2006-09-04
If you're planning to submit your film to a film festival, then this is a good book to get started on your research of which one to submit to and when. You can also get a sense of the perks, pros and cons of submitting to a selected group of prestigious festivals.
The first half of the book has lots of tips and interviews from filmmakers, producers and the like that can help you plan and execute a successful film festival strategy. Then you have a great categorization of over 1,000 film festivals that will allow you to find the one that's right for your specific type of film.
The 3rd edition has revised information, but as one might expect additions and changes happen very frequently in this business. So you can use what you find here as a starting point and keep updating your own database, as you see fit.
every independent filmmaker should own this book.......2006-03-15
every independent filmmaker should own this book. I found it very useful on locating the major festivals & the do's & don'ts with applying to festivals. Highly recommended.
Gore's Ultimate Guide.......2005-06-09
Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide
By Chris Gore
Review by Pi Ware
There are few books that truly deserve the term "Ultimate" in their title. The 3rd edition of Chris Gore's book, Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide, is one of those rare books. This is a must-read for every filmmaker. And it is a must-read not only before you apply to film festivals, but ideally, it's a must-read when you're conceiving the script. Because Gore's guide is not simply an extensive listing of festivals or a compilation of checklists of what to bring, but-first and foremost-Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide is an attempt to understand the entire marketplace of independent film. And it's an attempt to arm the filmmaker with all the knowledge, materials, courage and charm to succeed in that marketplace.
Gore packs this essential guide with interviews from successful filmmakers like Morgan Spurlock and Jared Hess, with Sundance director Geoff Gilmore, and with notorious film rep Jeff Dowd. But Gore also includes interviews from filmmakers whose films have not sold at Sundance, filmmakers who have self-distributed, and filmmakers whose films have out-and-out bombed. All of which serves to give you a very well-rounded and realistic perspective of the indie film world-a goal that few people in the media have ever attempted. In fact, most of what you read about indie filmmaking concentrates on the 1 in a 1000 success story and then distorts it into some kind of low-effort "overnight" success. Gore bursts that bubble. And tells you the truth.
Here's the basics of what Gore's book arms you with:
- in-depth analysis of the Top 10 film festivals, and why you should apply to these first
- tips from true experts on how to make a splash to maximize potential distribution offers
- how to create the all-important marketing materials such as a web site, poster, postcard, press kit, and trailer
- lists of mistakes filmmakers commit that screw up their films
- comprehensive listings of over 1,000 film festivals, including travel tips and contact information
Perhaps what I like the most about the book is that Gore reiterates the secret festival strategy that select filmmakers have devised after attending festivals around the world: be nice. This underestimated strategy is part of the long-term thinking that characterizes Gore's guide. He advocates other virtues that you'll find equally as important during your daunting struggle through the film world: patience and humility. "When you pick up the trades and read that this film or that film sold for a million bucks," he writes, "don't let it get you down when yours does not sell. The cold truth is that the entertainment business moves at a glacial pace. Things happen very, very slowly, so you must have patience. You may not close a distribution deal for you film, but you'll have made many new friends and useful contacts that will help you along on your eighteen month (or more!) journey in getting your work seen in front of appreciative festival audiences."
The book suffers in minor ways due to Gore's overly informal writing style and the advertisements peppered throughout as if it were a magazine (and yet the cover price is $21.95). It's funny to note, too, that the most detailed of the checklists is about successfully crashing a party. But these criticisms are petty. Gore's twenty year real-world experience shines through and empowers you to take advantage of the ultimate launching pad for nearly every indie film in the world: the film festival.

Comprehensive Survival Guide.......2007-02-07
Wow. I just got into this book (and Easy Breadmaking by the same author) and am amazed! These are not just cookbooks. The author takes the time to explain the facts, diagnosis, and treatment options for food allergies. She also includes a comprehensive nutrition section, all written in an easy to understand and very uplifting way. I am thankful that someone has taken their time and talents to write down what we need when challenged with multiple food allergies.
A true survival guide.......2007-01-31
All of Nickie Dumke's books are excellent. She is extremely dedicated to helping others through allergy trials and brings years of experience to the task. Although worth buying just for the helpful recipes, they are also just what the title says: survival guides. And that's how I have used them to help me during periods of very severe food allergies and chemical sensitivities. I thank God for providing such a fountain of help during such a trying time.
Help With Food Allergies Plus.......2007-01-20
This book really helped me when my food allergies were so bad that I didn't know what to eat. It introduced me to new foods which I could eat, gave easy recipes for cooking them, and provided medical insights that helped me improve my health. I highly recommend this book for everyone with food allergies, even if they are not as severe as mine.
Many success stories to help you preservere!.......2006-12-03
If you have food allergies and are serious about regaining your health, you must take time to read this book. It will provide the motivation and the tools (recipes, sources of foods, etc.) to be sucessful. Learning to rotate foods is not easy, but it is worth the effort. Be sure to read "A Personal Postscript" and "Three Generations of Allergies". These success stories will help you perservere in your journey.

One of The Best If Not THE best Out There.......2006-11-02
This book by Justin Goldberg is one of the best books on the independent music and the music industry out there. This book is head and shoulders above the competition. What makes this book so great is that is broken down into chapters of important aspects of the industry and most importantly each chapter contains numerous interviews from industry executives about their thoughts and experiences on the subject. Only aperson as well connected as Goldberg could have gathered and harnessed this much knowledge in one book. Just when you think this book can't get any better it has a CD Rom included with it. The CD ROM is a database of music contacts that is unparalleled. Any contact you need in the music industry is on that CD Rom. The CD ROM itself is worth $15.00. To me it was like buying the database and getting the book for free. If you can just afford to buy one book on this subject, this should be the one!
A good reference guide.......2006-07-03
I recommend this book by Justin to gain greater insights in the Music business or any business. It was a great buy along with a couple of manuals I purchased from Musicbrains.net entitled the Indie label Kit on Amazon.
Good information.......2006-05-20
Why is it that the music industry is called the businessman's hell? Well read this book and you might find out, it contains the history of the independent record label and also lots of examples of people that made it big using minimal resources. It will teach you about the dangers evolved in fighting big companies and the "how to"'s of the business. A good book with easy structure and an accessible language that truly deserves to be called "the handbook for hell"
Handbook a must have when entering the gates of the industry.......2006-05-15
If you have flipped through countless how to books, looking for guidance on your path as a musician the treck ends here! with all the important facts outlined and easy to see this book not only delivers the information like "UPS" it also explains the terible truths about the music business which all artists need to know to make it on there own. for more information on this topic i suggest the well written book by ty cohen "Music Business & Entertainment Law Contracts for Indie Recording Artist, Labels, Songwriters, Composers, Producers, Managers and All Others in the Record Industry. Preprinted Binder" it has plenty of usefull information for the indie recording artist!
Unbelievable!.......2005-06-22
What's so unbelievable? Well, two things. First it's unbelievable how anyone could describe this book as "All in all, an extremely unsatisfying book. If there was a "no star" rating I would have chosen it." The second thing that is unbelievable is how great of a read this book truly is. This is a down to earth, easy to read, easy to relate to guide to the music industry, which is EXACTLY what it claims to be! Goldberg's style is very conversational, tapping into the many years of experience that he and others in the music industry bring to the table to give those of us who aren't "insiders" a very real look into this hard to break into scene. There's nothing technical, boring, or elitist about this book, it really is the "ultimate" survival guide. And I had absolutely no problem understanding the MANY references made in the book to the attached cdrom and how to access that information. I guess some people just don't pay attention to what they're reading!

Shill reviews.......2006-08-31
These reviews appear to be all shill reviews except for maybe one. They're mostly from Florida, probably where the author lives, and they're all within a month or so of each other. Disappointing.
Finally Financial Help.........2005-09-12
This is a real nuts and bolts look at your financial situation. If you have a little or alot, it doesn't matter. It gives you the tools to look at where you are and then gives you real informatin about credit cards and how to use them and car loans and how they work, mortgages and more. I am recommending this one to all my children. If they taught this stuff in high school the world would be a much better place.
Winning the Cash Flow War is a Winner.......2005-02-16
This is a needed topic for every household to address. Fred Rewey captures the issues and solutions for personal financial needs and goals in a very practical and effective way. If someone doesn't have financial plans to win the cash flow war this book will give them the groundwork to get on the road to financial stability and if someone is already disciplined they are probably not practicing everything and can learn some new applications from this book. Everyone is in a cash flow war, this gives people the battle plan to win the war.
This book stands out in a crowed field...........2005-02-08
WOW, what a pleasant surprise! The most common sense book on the subject of personal finance I have ever read! More insight than I expected on the subject. I especially like the section on credit cards debt. Should be required reading in schools.
A User-friendly Tool to Win Your Own Financial War.......2005-02-01
The concept of a battle with your finances is an excellent theme; there are so many of us down in the trenches trying to get through this stuff on a daily basis. And although I am in a better position in my life personally than in my younger years, I still have a ways to go to actually win my own war. But Fred's book gives me hope that I can make that happen.
I love the layout of the book, Fred's great sense of humor, and all the special icons (Allies, Enemies, Action Items) and callouts that point to bits of important information, making the whole book easy to digest as well as super helpful.
I am recommending this book to other family members and friends who I know would benefit from the great "ammo" provided within these pages.

Great Book!.......2005-08-16
Even though this book was published in 1996, the information is very up to date and very helpful. It provides a realistic look at grad school.
Very Useful for Those Contemplating and Pursuing Grad Study.......2002-04-16
The Spanish have a colorful saying, `Antes de te cases, mira lo que haces', which literally means- before getting married, look at what you are doing. Figuratively speaking, this expression is a Latin version of our own cautionary admonition- look before you leap.
Ms. Mitchell's The Ultimate Graduate School Survival Guide offers thoughtful advice to those motivated students interested in critically evaluating the decision to pursue and attain an advanced degree. The book is excellent and extremely valuable because it forces the prospective grad student to focus on the most important things before, during and after taking the grad school plunge. The book elaborates on the right way and the wrong way to approach prospective schools, choose which school to attend, play the graduate school game, and navigate the treacherous, shark-infested waters of academe. It also offers useful, practical advice on grant and proposal writing, publications, and time management. Additionally, the author has included a bibliography full of useful books to help grad students achieve their degree goals.
Many students do not realize that by deciding to attend graduate school, they often lose control over their own fate, as your advisers dictate both your course of study and the possible career choices in academe and the professional workplace- long after you have left the ivory tower. Although I balk at the book's wholehearted endorsement of conformity to the prevailing regime and using sycophancy at every opportunity in the face of tyrannical faculty, this book provides the real deal, the inside story on the realities of graduate training. The book covers everything important, and tries to provide helpful hints and suggestions geared to successful navigation of the capricious politics in the ivory tower. Additionally, the author manages to cover even the more objectionable topics, such as romantic liaisons between students and faculty, the theft of student ideas and research by faculty, the fickle favoritism for some students over others by faculty, and the thorny politics of inclusion.
However, there are a couple of noticeable caveats in the book. First, the author neglected to add that a student, in deciding which school to attend, should consider the cost of living in and around the school environment, and the difficulty of attaining minimum lifestyle requirements. Even when a student receives generous financial aid, it may not be enough to cover the cost of living. If the aid given is not in line with the cost of living in the particular environment, the student will be forced to depend on loans for some or most of his or her living expenses. Moreover, many campus environments face housing shortages, and as can be expected, rents are bid upward when housing is scarce. Not only is the cost of living exorbitant in many environments, housing for students tends to be scarce and costly. If working professionals living in these areas are paying five hundred to one thousand dollars for the privilege of sleeping in someone's attic (or in more than a few cases, a closet), one can imagine the difficulty students would face.
Moreover, in recent years, given the generally dismal economic outlook, many students increasingly look upon graduate school as a safe harbor from both social and economic turmoil. One should bear in mind that one may give up much more than one gains in attending graduate school, as the cost of graduate study, whether paid for by loans or by fellowships, and the income foregone by not working, quickly mount. Also, these costs worsen the longer it takes to complete the degree. Therefore, given the hidden, though very real costs of a graduate education, I suggest one consider working part or full-time (for pay), preferably in a field related to one's studies while pursuing the graduate degree, or having one's place of work foot the bill for graduate study. Otherwise, one just might be better off substituting practical, on the job experience for advanced education, as many graduate programs are not geared to providing students with marketable skills.
Second, one should make certain that whatever body of knowledge one acquires, this knowledge should be transferable to other endeavors, or at least something that one can build upon. Too many students have pursued graduate degrees, in the process learning obscure concepts, methodologies and techniques, only to learn after completing their studies that their knowledge is either impractical or obsolete (or in many cases both)- a situation which not only makes them ill-prepared for the realities of the workforce, but also forces them to play catch-up and spend valuable time and money picking up other skills. Being in such a situation is never pretty- especially when one has a family to support. Therefore, it behooves the prospective student to consider the expected payoff from an investment in advanced education very critically.
This book, along with RL Peters' Getting What You Came For and PJ Feibelman's A PhD Is Not Enough, should be required reading for all graduate students.
Helped a great deal.......2000-07-24
I got this book when I was a senior in college and thinking about grad school. I didn't know what to expect and the book offered a great overview. I really liked the quotes from other grad students, too. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who's trying to make a decision about grad school and wants the inside track.
The Ultimate Grad School Survival Guide.......2000-07-15
To my knowledge, there is no other book of its kind. It is easy reading and practical! If you are even considering going to grad school, this book is a must. Find out if you have what it takes to get in and complete grad school by reading this book.
Too basic for its audience.......1999-12-08
Despite its pleasant tone and occasional bits of helpful information, this book is far too basic to be of much use to anyone. It tries to cover an incredible amount of territory -- Finding the Right University (Ch. 1) all the way to Your Thesis/Dissertation (Ch. 8) and Getting a Job (Ch. 10) -- in barely 200 pages. Simple is not better in this case. Anyone above a college sophomore should read Robert Peters' "Getting What You Came For" instead.

Balanced and Useful.......2006-08-21
This was a complete and very readable guidebook! It contained lots of good tips - some known and others less obvious - which made adjustment to college that much easier for my daughter. It is a much better and more useful book than many of the others out there.
The Best.......2005-12-01
Of all the college survival books I have read this is the best! It is the most in-depth, and it is a must-have for any incoming college freshman. It contains many helpful chapters like how to take a test, how to take good notes, how to study well, the professor hierarchy, getting along with your roomie, and time management skills. It was my favorite, and it might become yours as well.
Darn good reading.......2001-08-21
Yes indeed, this book is great for that incoming freshman who has no clue of what to do. It has good insight on college life and deals with subjects like sex and alcohol. The book is a great gift for that student who is going away to college. I couldn't put it down.
I hope this helps Peace:o>
A Great Guide.......1999-10-12
Plenty of useful tips for any college student. If you like this book, you'll love "Major in Success", by Patrick Combs. It will change your college experience.
New name, same great book.......1999-03-16
I had searched for some time to find College 101 (the university primer which guided me through my liberal arts career in the mid-1980s), but no one seemed to carry it anymore, or so I thought. I was excited to see that Worthington and Farrar are back (they never went away) with the Ultimate College Survival Guide--a renamed, high-speed edition of the unique genre Professor Farrar mastered (invented?) almost two decades ago. Worthington has turned out another slick edition. I believe this is the same gal who teamed with Dr. Pat Walsh (Johns Hopkins Hospital), making his technical expertese discernible to the masses in their best-selling book on the prostate. As she did there, Worthington has managed to condense the four year college experience into a cogent and humourous read--an improbable twofer. What was that guy from New York reading? Maybe he ought to be "report" carded.

More practical in most extreme situations and environments.......2005-06-17
Many diagrams and step-by-step instructions for what to do in different situations. This book is probably more useful for the more adventurous type folks, frequent outdoor campers and hikers. About 1/10 of the information in the book can be used for everyday emergencies, like how to carry someone safely over your shoulder. The rest of the book covers things like how to make a raft, making ropes for capturing small animals, and making arrows are fun to read but only useful if you purposely put yourself in that kind of environment. Basically this book targets the die-hards of jungle exploration, mountain climbing, and cross-country camping. Might be useful if you have this book on the plane when it crashes, that's assuming that you're close to land and able to swim to it, because most pilots will do their best to land in water.

A good place to start learning about adventure racing!.......2007-09-18
"Adventure Racing, The Ultimate Guide" By Barry Siff & Liz Caldwell
Barry Siff and Liz Caldwell, both experienced adventure racers with resumes that include 11th place finish in the Eco-Challenge in 2000, 9th place finish in the Raid Gauloises in 2000 decided to put together their collective experience and write a book to help introduce and educate people about adventure racing. The book was very good, educational and informative especially if you are interested in getting into adventure racing.
The Good: Great source of information for beginners and experienced racers alike. Good color photo's in the center. The section that detailed the gear list was very interesting. There isn't too much to elaborate on. If you are interested in adventure racing this is a good place to start.
The Bad: I wish they would have spent a little bit more time on shorter races.
Overall: This book is a good place to start for people interested in adventure racing. Pick it up and give it a try.
Adventure Racing--General Thoughts on Three Guides.......2004-10-28
I bought three books as I prepared for my first race (a sprint, which my team won thanks to the good advice found in all three of the guides discussed below): Don Mann and Kara Schaad's Complete Guide to Adventure Racing, Ian Adamson's Runner's World Guide to Adventure Racing, and Barry Siff and and Liz Caldwell's Adventure Racing: The Ultimate Guide. Of these, I found the Complete Guide good to start with, Adamson's book a standard guide to go back to again and again, and Siff and Caldwell's an ongoing delight.
The layout of Mann and Schaad's work is good for those just starting--lots of sidebars, whitespace, and basics. Adamson has professional prestige and his book is filled with the opinions/wisdom of someone with hardwon wisdom. I sensed though that as a high profile professional adventure racer, he is obligated to sponsors. His gear recommendations, which I gobbled up at first, began to seem more like celebrity endorsements by the end and I began to wish there was a more objective equipment guide. I have no doubt that Adamson's equipment recommendations are excellent; I would have liked to have gotten a better sense of comparison, though, to help me better understand why a Paladin harness was the recommendation rather than an Alpine Bod-- ie. what are the little things I am really looking for when I go out and buy gear for a discipline I don't yet do?
On Siff and Caldwell, I think the text portrays fingertip wisdom as good as Adamson's and the color photo section is great. Having read all three a couple of times through, I find myself picking up Siff and Caldwell and browsing it more than the others.
Mann and Schaad are on the bottom of the pile. I think that has something to do with the layout--which hints of Idiot's guides. I've certainly not worn out their advise but the layout has gone stale.
Recommendations: If you are completely new to the sport, and to more than one discipline, get the Complete Guide and read it first. Once you are hooked, you have to have the other two.
One area that these books don't purport to cover well is land navigation. A great book for learning those skills is Burns, et. al. Wilderness Navigation. I have taught from it several times in college level classes and it is a better fit for adventure racing than for what I have been using it (fundamental map reading and compass navigation).
Excellent Guide Book.......2002-05-21
This book has been an invaluable guide and should be considered mandatory reading for both racers and crew.
I've competed in one 24 hour adventure race, crewed for another and am preparing for my 2nd 24 hour race which is a couple of weeks away. The practical advice and suggestions that Barry and Liz present are excellent and have prepared me for what to expect in nearly every facet of my races. I particularly like their section about team dynamics and the importance of racing with people you like.
Adventure racing is not a sport to be taken lightly given the length and duration of races as well as the multiple disciplines involved. Research and education are crucial and this book is an excellent start for all of us budding adventure racers.

This was my first Adveture Racing book. I really enjoyed it. I learned some very useful information. My hi-lighter was used quite a bit. The pictures are spectacular! They will be hanging on my bedroom wall soon.

Wish I could buy a copy for every family's home.......2007-03-02
This book is definitely going on my keeper shelf! Mr. Faidley provides very important information in an easy-to-digest format on how to deal with a variety of weather-related hazards and types of storms. I was dismayed to learn how many things I was taught as a child were exactly the WRONG thing to do in a storm. This guide has the potential to save many lives.
