Book Description

From the best-selling author of A Vast Conspiracy and The Run of His Life comes Too Close to Call--the definitive story of the Bush-Gore presidential recount. A political and legal analyst of unparalleled journalistic skill, Jeffrey Toobin is the ideal writer to distill the events of the thirty-six anxiety-filled days that culminated in one of the most stunning Supreme Court decisions in history.

Packed with news-making disclosures and written with the drive of a legal thriller, Too Close to Call takes us inside James Baker's private jet, through the locked gates to Al Gore's mansion, behind the covered-up windows of Katherine Harris's office, and even into the secret conference room of the United States Supreme Court. As the scene shifts from Washington to Austin and into the remote corners of the enduringly strange Sunshine State, Toobin's book will transform what you thought you knew about the most extraordinary political drama in American history.

The Florida recount unfolded in a kaleidoscopic maze of bizarre concepts (chads, pregnant and otherwise), unfamiliar people in critically important positions (the Florida Supreme Court), and familiar people in surprising new places (the Miami relatives of Elián González, in a previously undisclosed role in this melodrama). With the rich characterization that is his trademark, Toobin portrays the prominent strategists who masterminded the campaigns--the Daleys and the Roves--and also the lesser-known but influential players who pulled the strings, as well as the judges and justices whose decisions determined the final outcome. Toobin gives both camps a treatment they have not yet received--remarkably evenhanded, nonpartisan, and entirely new.

The post-election period posed a challenge to even the most zealous news junkie: how to keep up with what was happening and sort out the important from the trivial. Jeffrey Toobin has now done this--and then some. With clarity, insight, humor, and a deep understanding of the law, he deconstructs the events, the players, and the often Byzantine intricacies of our judicial system. A remarkable account of one of the most significant periods in our country's history, Too Close to Call is endlessly surprising, frequently poignant, and wholly addictive.

2 out of 5 stars not a bad work of fiction.......2006-03-25

too bad that such an important subject was handled in such a biased way. even worse is that the facts were either only particaly used or twisted to fit the point mr. toobin was trying to make at the time. everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts. this book should classified as fiction and not non-fiction.

3 out of 5 stars A good read, if a bit biased.......2005-03-18

Jeff Toobin is a good writer - I enjoyed reading this book, just as I enjoyed his other book on the O.J. Simpson trial.

"Too Close To Call" is very Gore-centric, however, perhaps because Toobin himself is a Democrat and has made no secret of the fact that he thinks Al Gore should have won the 2000 election. But his bias doesn't distract too much from the interesting tidbits he provides about the campaigns, both before and after election day.

I do recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the historic 2000 election fight, but be aware that Toobin is far from an impartial commentator.

The liberal bias is made somewhat less annoying by the fact that Bush ran away with Florida in 2004, winning the state easily.

3 out of 5 stars One More Tired Election Book....Another Gore Whine..........2005-03-08

I've never cared for Jeffrey Toobin's commentary on CNN. (I did recommend - in place of this book - Jeff Greenfield's, "One Order of Crow"). His obvious bias detract from a man who is articulate and handsome enough to attract attention.

This is another 'the Republicans stole the election' tome - and a wasted one at that. I wish to make a few points to those who have argued (like Toobin's book) that the election was somehow 'stolen' or people were 'disenfranchised.'

1. Gore did not lose the election because he lost Florida; he lost it because he failed to carry his home state of Tennessee (Jeff Greenfield is one of the few to honestly point this out).

2. The butterfly ballot DID confuse people. However, it was approved by a DEMOCRAT named Theresa LePore and published in the papers the Sunday before the election. How this is the Republicans' fault is beyond my ability to comprehend.

3. Judge Sauls is a registered DEMOCRAT - and even Sauls saw the insanity in allowing selective recounts in only Democratic counties. Had Gore applied to a statewide recount as opposed to an obvious vote search recount, people would have taken it much better.

4. Katherine Harris was unquestionably in Bush's corner. But there is no evidence Harris did anything with the votes except certify them which was her job. That was even delayed by several days - so what's the problem?

5. The Supreme Court did NOT give Bush the election by a 5-4 count; they ruled SEVEN TO TWO that selective recounts violated the equal protection clause of the constitution. The 5-4 vote concerned the REMEDY NOT the violation of the law.

6. Why does nobody mention that Bush had NOTHING to do with the make-up of the Supreme Court? Gore had voted to confirm Scalia, Kennedy, and Souter, and his boss appointed Ginsburg and Breyer. Gore had also voted against Thomas. It seems that Gore had more personal involvement with the Court than Bush could have ever dreamed. Yes, Bush's father appointed two of them - but unless you wish to argue that Bush 41 knew his son would need the Supreme Court to be President years later, that is irrelevant.

Toobin's book was slightly entertaining, so I give it three stars. But Greenfield's takes you there in as unbiased a manner possible.

4 out of 5 stars Overgrown New Yorker Article, Lucid About The Election.......2004-06-01

Written by probably America's most well-known media legal analyst, Jeffrey Toobin takes on the Floridian debacle of 2000 in his short book "Too Close to Call."

What it lacks in legal heft it makes up with journalistic breeze, with Toobin writing in the same lucid tone that he takes in the New Yorker, describing set pieces between Bush and Gore staffers not quite equally, but close enough. Perhaps Toobin is biased in his conclusions that Gore was jobbed, and this is where he may have wanted to shed some light on his own political views, ahem -- Democrat -- and this would clearly have strengthened his case. But after all is said and done, the guy lays enough foundation to support his theory that the Republicans were too ruthless and Al Gore was too spineless.

"Too Close to Call" never describes evidence of out-and-out fraud, but presents the conclusion that it sure would have been nice if the great State of Florida would have taken the time and just truly recounted all the votes, and points out matter-of-factly that in this scenario, Gore most likely would have won. Whether or not you're a Democrat or Republican, the idea that democracy itself was circumvented in this case is extremely troubling, and that's the pitch-perfect note Toobin leaves the reader with.

Surpisingly from a "legal" analyst, this book lacks strong legal analysis, or any legal background at all. There's hardly any references to appropriate statutes, case background, etc., that would really be advantageous for the discerning academic reader who wants to read something more substantive than an overgrown New Yorker article.

But as a huge fan of the New Yorker, such an article draws no real complaints here.

5 out of 5 stars READ 'EM ALL AND LEARN HOW G.W. BUSH IS NOT REALLY OUR PRES........2004-03-25

Read all the election 2000 recount books and thus learn how G.W. Bush is not really our authentic president, rather an "illegal" or "alien" resident of the White House.

Toobin, as usual, is a great writer who tackles great subjects like the election 2000 re-count -- which the USSC on a five to four vote halted the re-count -- thus committing a non-violent coupe of the presidentcy and thus our country.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best of its kind.......2004-08-25

In the sales game, the road to closing is oftentimes difficult to navigate. The roadblocks that show themselves in the form of gatekeepers, decision-makers, self-sabotage, and more are plentiful. In Anthony Parinello's new book "Getting the Second Appointment," he sheds light on how to negotiate the sometimes vicious sales cycle from the initial cold call to the request for business.

In this book, Parinello (Selling to VITO) takes on the tremendous task of teaching salespeople how to sell in a relatively short amount of time, specifically after two phone calls. He schools salespeople on how to approach each key player in the sales hierarchy, including approvers, recommenders, influencers, and decision makers. The author infuses Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and applies it to the personality types of the top officers of any organization. Parinello even gives great advice on how to approach gatekeepers and use them as allies.

"Getting the Second Appointment" is part motivational book and part step-by-step instructional manual. Parinello uses practical examples that are especially useful for those people who are in phone sales. The book also offers online collateral for continued education after reading the book. This is by far, one of the best, groundbreaking, easy-to-follow books ever written on the topic of sales. It is a must read for any salesperson, from the novice to the top bell ringer.

5 out of 5 stars The techniques shared in this book have brought me success........2004-06-26

I have had this book for 2 months now and I am starting to see the return. The book has a tremendous amount of content and can be utilized as a guide for years to come. I sell in the IT industry and here is what I have accomplished with many of the techniques in this book.
I have reduced my pipeline by 40% with an increase in my sales of about 25% by having quality business and opportunities.
I have become more successful when I get in front of a C-level exec by talking "their" language and not getting sent down to their staff all the time.
I have used the squeeze technique in his book and it works like a dream.

I will admit, ADD gets in my way of reading. This book gets right to the point. How to get there and what to say when you do.

Based upon reading Tony's new book I have instructed my sales team to "either get a committment on the second appointment from your prospect or move on!" Tony's techniques in this book has already saved us time and significantly decreased our cost of sales! Why couldn't he have written this sooner!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Climbing Misadventures.......2006-07-08

I truly enjoyed this book - firstly, because it made me laugh out loud, and secondly, because it actually offers some wise words of advice for climbers. As I read these tales of climbing gone awry I could easily picture myself (younger and stupider version) and my erstwhile climbing buddies from college in many of the same precarious situations, mumbling to each other, "Well, this is another fine mess you've gotten us into."

4 out of 5 stars Funny errors. As long as they're not your's........2003-08-02

If you like climbing and comedy, you'll like this book. Approximately 70 short stories of climbs that almost ended badly. You can learn from this book. But some of the lessons are very elementary. Like the climber climbing big wall Yosemite with a new girl he had just met who had never climbed. Might want to pick your partner a little better. And another quick tip, you might want to stay away from the drugs and alcohol while climbing.

Each story ends with a quick analysis of what should have been done to stay out of the situation. Some of this is helpful. But generally it can be summed up in a sentence: Don't do dumb things while climbing. Unless, of course, you want to entertain readers.

5 out of 5 stars Laugh Through Your Own Personal Apocalypse.......2002-12-20

John Long is really telling us cautionary tales. But if anyone can make you laugh, snort, and giggle at the thought of some poor sod hanging by a fingernail to a crumbling mountain ledge, John Long is that man. Also cartoonist Tami Knight has an equally irreverent sense of humor.

However, if you are not laughing too hard, you will notice Long's Commentary and Prevention notes on each tale are precise, well written and helpful. The big moral throughout is you can never ever be too careful when rock climbing. Also, never assume anything.

I think this is a particularly good book for young people who have an interest in rock climbing. A solemn, dry book would never do the trick. It is difficult to grab this group's attention, particularly since the hormones are raging, and they are certain of their immortality. But they adore gallows humor, and just perhaps a few of these safety measures will stick in their minds and hearts.

John Long has a knack of coming on like your new best friend. Similar to Stephen King, you feel like he is telling his stories just for you and no one else. So settle in and enjoy the read!

4 out of 5 stars More Classic Largo writing.......2002-01-16

Climbing accidents and near accidents told in the classic "Largo" style. Each situation is colorfully written with lots of humor. Long then technically evaluates what caused the problem, and describes how to prevent such situations from happening. Keep 'em coming John!

Just hope you're not one of the people in his stories!

4 out of 5 stars A hilarious compilation of bonehead moves.......2001-08-22

A truly great book. I laughed so hard my sides hurt as I read "Nellies Night Out" and "Helluva Time on Mt. Dutzi." Long comically recounts classic stupid mistakes all climbers have made at one time or another but still provides a down to earth commentary so that we all might never be on the receiving end of these same mistakes.

Book Description

Throughout history, many speeches and documents were prepared for events that might have happened, but never did. Almost History includes more than eighty selections, many supported by photos of the actual documents, and each is introduced with the story of how they came to be and where they fit in history.

Download Description

Almost History is a fascinating collection of speeches, memos, and other archival material that reveals how our government would have handled historic moments that never came to be: JFK's prepared address justifying his bombing of Cuba during the 1962 missile crisis; Abraham Lincoln's plans for post-Civil War Reconstruction; the authorization for the use of American nuclear weapons in the Vietnam War; the FBI's memo on deporting John Lennon, and much more. The book is not based on supposition; the text is illustrated with actual documents which offer a focus and insight into alternative history that is truly unique. These events were close to reality, but twists of fate and sudden changes stopped them from becoming our destiny.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better..........2005-03-19

There were a lot of things in this book that were interesting (Churchill's near-death by taxicab), unusual (Losing the Astronauts) and virtually unknown (The American Revolution Truce Plan) but the book failed to reach out and touch more profound and strange episodes in U.S. history. What about the Confederate Constitution? Aaron Burr's plans in the Northwest Territory? Reconstruction proposals that would have remade the South into entirely new states? The Olympic Plan for the invasion of Japan?

Perhaps it is nit-picking as to what was picked for the book and what was not but when you have to include a chapter on urban legends you're probably not hitting all the key points.

3 out of 5 stars Readable, but not that fun.......2002-03-02

Almost History is based on a great premise, and I opened it expecting to smile a lot. A book like this should give its reader a sense of how spontaneous and alive history really is; I expected to realize that a bunch of seemingly inevitable events weren't really so ponderous, that the world of the past is fresh -- full of fallible people making the best choices they could.

The book didn't quite do that for me. It's readable, it includes a few gems, but it's just not that engaging. I didn't smile that often.

Partly this is just a collection of marginalia. Sure, it makes you raise your eyebrows to see Nixon thinking about a speech in case the astronauts die on the moon. When you consider it, though, any president probably would have prepared for the worst there. Whether he wrote the speech or not doesn't really get to the heart of the event -- it doesn't affect whether events happened. The book also includes the speech J.F.K. would have given on the day he was killed. That speech didn't affect whether he was shot. We can maybe hint at ways his future policies might have gone based on its text, but you know, that's hardly a lynchpin on which history turned one way or the other. (It was a fairly platitudinous speech about foreign policy through strength, by the way.)

In some cases the chosen tidbits don't really even fit the premise. For example, Teddy Roosevelt's speech after he was shot during a campaign appearance is included. That IS history, it happened. There's an excerpt about the use of Navajo language by the U.S. marines in World War II. That's interesting, but how does it fit this book? The marines DID that.

I guess what I'm saying is that this is a pleasant little browse, but it didn't hang together well enough to really grab me and get me staying up late.

If you want a book that's lively and fun and that really airs out your sense of American History, two fantastic titles by James Loewen will do the job: "Lies My Teacher Told Me" and "Lies Across America." Loewen's basic approach is to contrast the bland, textbook history we all learned with real, live, primary sources about the same events. "Teacher" examines a bunch of high school history textbooks, and "Lies Across America" looks at those historical markers your Dad always stopped at. Loewen's books both made me smile and laugh out loud. I felt like reading them out loud to other people, you know? Almost History, even in its better moments, just isn't quite in their league.

4 out of 5 stars A mixed bag of "what-ifs".......2002-02-01

One of the great games of history is the what-ifs: What if Lee had won at Gettysburg? What if Burgoyne had won at Saratoga? What if the New York City traffic accident that seriously injured Winston Churchill had killed him?

This book is a documentation of myriad such what-ifs. As such, it's a good but mixed bag. The best items are genuinely poignant or thought-provoking. These include the speech that William Safire wrote for Richard Nixon in case the Apollo 11 astronauts were stranded on the moon, notes that Eisenhower wrote to himself in case the Normandy Invasion was a failure, and Ulysses S. Grant declining Lincoln's invitation to join him at Ford's Theater.

Less interesting ones tend to be sidelights, items that aren't all that interesting in themselves: Nixon's application to the FBI, an FBI memorandum on deporting John Lennon, and the speech Kennedy would have given in Dallas if he hadn't been shot.

A few are already famous items: Einstein's letter to President Roosevelt recommending the undertaking of research into the atomic bomb and Eleanor Roosevelt's letter resigning from the DAR after it refused to allow Marian Anderson to perform at Constitution Hall.

Overall, though, it's an entertaining and thought-provoking collection, with the best section ("failed predictions") saved for last, in which the New York Times chides Robert Goddard for thinking that rockets can work in a vacuum, Scientific American (in 1909) believes the automobile is fully developed, and Popular Mechanics looks forward to the day when computers might weigh only a ton or so.

Lots of fun stuff: interesting reading and probably another good bathroom book since the sections are short.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2001-09-10

This book takes several key events (lunar landing) or people (John Lennon) in history and gives an unknown fact about what almost happened. Mr. Bruns backs up his writing with documentation which makes it all the more interesting. He also does not get bogged down in consequences if the almost event did happen.

For example, he writes about John Lennon and the consideration of deporting him. He provides the documentation to back this up and does not get stuck in the trap of trying to explain what would have happened if John Lennon really had been deported. The assumption is the reader is intellegent enough to thing through many of the consequences of this. He also provides a snapshot of what is happening at this time in history that places this consideration in perspective rather than leaving it as an isolated event.

I enjoyed this book a lot.

      Book Description

Journalist and baseball historian Mike Robbins tells the gripping stories of dozens of players who came this close to baseball immortality. Their stories are dramatic, sometimes moving, even blackly funny—and they’re virtually unknown, even to die-hard fans. Robbins offers gripping accounts of the games, series, seasons, and careers that fell excruciatingly short—from forgotten near-heroes of the postseason such as Hal Smith and Chuck Hiller to players such as Harlond Clift (a great player trapped on a terrible club) and Jose Cruz Senior (a power hitter in a stadium that favored pitchers) who missed out because they spent their careers with the wrong team, in the wrong park, or in the wrong era. Robbins also tells the stories of players who missed their chance to join the all-time greats because of injury, illness, or other interruptions—the likes of Smokey Joe Wood (injured thumb) and Eiji Sawamura (killed in World War II). Baseball fans will come away with exhilarating and sometimes heartbreaking stories, as well as a list of names, a treasury of surprising numbers—and a deeper sense of the men who have played the game.

5 out of 5 stars Great present for baseball fans!.......2005-04-14

My father is a huge baseball fan. I gave him this book for his birthday and he loved it. Many players he remembered, but lots of stories he'd never heard before and really enjoyed - he's been repeating them to us for weeks! I highly recommend this for the sports fan in your life.

5 out of 5 stars Great baseball book.......2004-06-30

Best baseball book I've read in years. Full of fascinating stories about baseball's "not-quite" immortals that you won't find in other publications. Great read for the avid or casual baseball fan. Stories are both tragic & humorous. Author's incredible baseball knowlege is matched only by his outstanding sense of humor.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-10-31

I enjoyed it because it shows you don't have to be the best looking, or most popular, or do things like everyone else to be a champion. Lyssa dresses differently, has a totally different training style, and has the ugliest horse ever. But she still is the best rider of everyone. I think our society needs to learn this. We put good looks and popularity as the most important things for a person to have in our world. These aren't the most important things. We need to look at the skills and the person inside to determine who's best. We need to be like Christina and learn to respect other ways.

5 out of 5 stars An awsome, funny and fantastic book!!!!!.......2002-05-02

This book was awsome! My mom and I read these books together all the time. It is a good book for all ages because it is easy to understand and there are not many hard words. These books inspire me to try new things when I am riding my horse. This book is about two teenagers who are in love, and they are big horseback riders. Cristina races horses and Parker does cross-country. When Parker was at an event with his horse Foxglove, he met a strang girl named Lyssa. She was riding a big gray horse, and she just went over a 3'6" oxer, a huge double jump. She was nice to Parker but when everybody at his farm started using her weird methods, he became very cross with her. Will Parker ever be friends with Lyssa? I think the author wants you to learn that everybody is different and that just because you have a different way of riding your horse that does not mean you can't be friends. I think the kind of reader that would enjoy this book is someone that love horses and enjoys reading about horses. I think this is a very good book to choose to read, because it is full of life, funny and never boring. Cristana is the girlfriend of Parker, and owner of Star (her horse.) and daughter of the famous jockey Ashley. Parker, is the boyfriend of Cristana, a great cross-country rider, owner of Foxglove (his horse.) Lyssa is an awsome cross-country rider, and owner of Blue (her horse.) This author has written all of the books in the seires, and trust me, there are a lot of books. I think that this book is different from other books because it is written in all the character's perspectives which shows everyone's point of veiw. It is not only a horse book it is also about the lives of teenagers and the problems they go threw. This author is very creative especially her great opening lines!!!!

        5 out of 5 stars Rider & Reader ..........2002-04-01

Yes the best!!! I love the fact that its a break from racing don't get me wrong racings cool but eventings great!! even if you canfind a bunch of other seris on eventing ive already read them all and besides Joannas the best this is my all time fav book ( along with all the ones were chris is eventing and #50 team player-very sad but well writen book-) so anyways the only problem i had with this book is that chris still hasen't come to her senses about eventing. hasen't anyone but me noticed how gurumpy and snobby chris has become sence she stoped eventing?
and star dosen't seem like a very good horse shes always having problems sterling was way better!!!! i miss her so much i read the horse of her dreams all the time! thats the best book its when every thing made seince. well enough for now!!!Bye!!!!

        3 out of 5 stars OK.......2001-12-24

This book was okay, I guess. I can understand where Parker was coming from but I think he kinda acted like a jerk. Also, why does Parker get books written with him as the main character. Mike and Tor never did! I love Parker, but I didn't like this book that much. Number 1, it was about eventing again and Number 2, it was mainly about how Parker was acting like a major snob like his parents when we know he's not!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME THIS BOOK ROCKS!!!!!!.......2001-09-30

I love this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I like Lyssa, she seems to really be gentle and loving to all horses. I espescially liked it when she petted Foxy and Parker was getting all worked up about how Lyssa managed to pet her. The dressage left me scratching my head though. Dressage is about the beauty and harmony between horse and rider. ( do not question me on that cause I take dressage lessons and my horse is a talented dressage horse.) How did Lyssa win? I mean, she had harmony, but Blue was UGLY!!!!!! Foxy is a fine thoroughbred horse. Sure, she messed up a little, but again, BLUE IS UGLY!!!!!
